By Alicia 4 STARSTHE DEATH CODE was a fantastic sequel that kept me invested and on my toes the entire book. I LOVED this sequel as it takes us beyond the barrier and into the unknown. There was a lot going on in this novel, lots of secrets, trust issues, loyalty uncertainties, shocking reveals and revelations that were utterly heart wrenching and epically thrilling! I just couldn't get enough of it all, and then when it was over, I was SCREAMING for book three!!Cummings really steps up her game in this sequel. Everything is more intense, more thrilling, more heart wrenching, and more shocking then the first time around. And I loved that about this book! Not many second installments that I've read surpassed its predecessor, but THE DEATH CODE did and some!!I listened to book one and two on audio, and the narrator Caitlin Davies, one of my all time favorites narrators really gives this sequel it's well deserved voice. And Josh Hurley, the other narrator in THE DEATH CODE is almost as good as Davies, but not quite on her level just yet. But nevertheless, they make a great team together and bring this dark world to life, with just the right voice and superb acting to have the reader falling in love with book two all over again. One downside to this book is my strong dislike for the main character Zephyr! And when you hate the main character, it makes it hard to get immersed into the story and really enjoy it. But luckily their was two main characters with dual POV's. And I LOVED Meadow to death, so it was easy to fall into the story regardless of my hate for Zephyr!Like in book one, Zephyr drove me insane for numerous reasons, but I was happy that Cummings did mange to make him a tad less annoying, though not by much! I never liked him from the first time I read his POV in book one, and book two was not any better. I don't really know why I dislike him so much, but he just drives me crazy and makes me cringe whenever it's time to read his POV. Since trying to kill himself in book one, he seemed weak and unstable. And his puppy dog love for a girl he just met made me dislike him even more.THE PLOT~ MEADOW ~Captured, tortured, alone, and betrayed, Meadow Woodson has lost it all in the name of survival. But she's not giving up, and she's determined not to let the Initiative win. No matter the obstacles, no matter the hardships, no matter the pain, she will endure it all to free her family, and she will make the Initiative pay once and for all, even if she has to die for it...Weeks after being captured by the Initiative, Meadow endures daily torture sessions trying to breaker her into submission, and give up the whereabouts of her mother the trader, and Zephyr, AKA Patient Zero and the boy she's come to love. And also info about the rebellion, and who's behind it and where it's being housed. But Meadow is not giving in, no matter how much pain they inflict on her, and that only makes her torture sessions that much more painful. Until she finally gains the upper hand and escapes Initiative custody, determined to find and free her family from the worst place a human can possibly be, The Ridge, a place even more insane and deadly then within her own perimeter area. But that won't stop Meadow, and she's prepared to keep going until she either finds them ALL, or it kills her first...~ ZEPHYR ~Separated, controlled, vengeful, and determined, Zephyr has one goal in mind, find Lark Woodson, the mother of the girl he loves, and the woman who has controlled him since his creation. His plan is simple:Find Lark Woodson and either trade her for Meadow, or, if all else fails, kill her and finally get his revenge, and set the patients on a war path of blood and destruction on the same people who have turned them all into unknowing monsters. Lark Woodson ruined his life, she is the creator of all the evil and joy in his world. She has molded him into a complacent animal, controlled him to unknowingly kill for The Murder Complex. But she also created the only girl he's ever loved, Meadow. Lark has hurt enough people, and now it's time to even the score. But as much as he wants Lark dead, he wants Meadow even more, and he's prepared to do the unthinkable to get her out the Initiative, alive. But fate is finally on their side when Meadow is able to escape her captivity from the Initiative. But their reunion is cut short when Meadow reveals her plan that could prove to be even more deadlier then staying with the Initiative. If Zephyr wants to stay with the girl he loves, then he will have to follow her into the unknown, and straight into the worst hell imaginable, The Ridge, where humans are being housed like lab rats and die faster then they blink. It comes down to this:If he wants to be with Meadow, the girl he loves, then he must give up everything he's been fighting for, his FREEDOM...THE DEATH CODE was an epic blast full of action and adventure, pain and death, love and hate, but also betrayal and forgiveness. I loved that Cummings has grown in her writing, and that her plots only get more thicker and more intense with each book, and that the characters go throw this flip flop in development. And I like that they are definitely flawed, but also fiercely developed with an awesome set of character traits that makes them more fleshed out and realistic. I am so excited for the conclusion, and can't wait to see what Cummings comes up with next!!!Overall, THE DEATH CODE was more thrilling and addicting then I ever anticipated it would be. I enjoyed this sequel even more then book one, and if Cummings keeps stepping up her game like this, then book three is going to blow me out of the water!! And though I did have my qualms about Zephyr, the plot was driven and fast paced enough that I didn't have much time to dwell on my hate for Zephyr. If you enjoy dark dystopian worlds, with thrilling plot twist, and shocking revelations, and a fairly good cast characters (Excluding Zephyr), then THE DEATH CODE is one EPIC sequel you DON'T want to miss!!

2 of 3 people found the following review helpful. OH MY STARS!!!! 4.5 STARS! By LibraryCutie I really enjoyed this book, I had no idea what would come for this book, what would happen, or who would die. I didn't even read the synopsis, I just knew I had to have it since The Murder Complex was sooo good!As you might know from The Murder Complex, Meadow is the key to ending TMC, her psycho mother made sure her precious invention would live. Zephyr is known as Patient Zero because he is, or was, a patient of The Murder Complex, the first patient actually. He's stronger than the rest. That's why its no surprise he beat the system. He triggered the reverse, one thing to check off the list. This is still told in Meadow and Zephyr's POV, all chapters are super short and this is sooo fast paced, I LOVE IT!I feared the worst for this book, because the name didn't sound good.. The Death Code.. It reminded me a lot of The Maze Runner, except a more brutal version. Much. More. Brutal."I leap, and in my head, I tell myself I'm fighting a Leech. It's all a blur, the twist of body against body, punches to the jaw, the throat. The crack of bones and the burst of blood. The slice of my blade against my enemy's desperate, sweating skin."Something I found heartwarming was when they finally found Peri, and she reunites with her Father. The man who pushed Meadow in the ocean with weights tied to her feet and told her to swim up. The man who stabbed her in the shoulder while in the water and told her to keep swimming. The man who made her steal a book from the library and find her own way home safely. He held Peri in his arms like an infant and cried a bloody tear, a literal bloody tear, with a smile. His baby girl is safe and he couldn't be happier. He's made sure Koi and Meadow can survive so they can protect Peri, so that he didn't have to teach her the brutal ways of surviving, so she can stay out of the darkness. This is a beautiful scene. His reunion with Meadow was more sad than heart-warming, it tugged at my heart as my vision got blurry.I love how Lindsay has portrayed her characters. Even though the majority of the world is full of killing monsters, they still have light in their hearts. They still have something to make them smile. Something to keep going.Oh, how I so want to just spill the secret Meadow keeps for over half the book.. I can't. I saw it coming, It was a theory of mine once the started... switching, and wow! That ending, BRILLIANT!I applaud you Lindsay Cummings, You've created a blood-filled, action packed, horror story that I think everyone should read. I am still gagging at the part with meadow and the "eyes".. blehhk!P.S. I listened to the Audible AudioBook for 35% of the book, and the narrators are amazing, and it helped me get into the book when I was tired or sleepy.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. I'm sure some will love this story By me The world was still confusing for me, and Willow was completely unrealistic. The writing just didn't pull me in and I found myself skimming through. I'm sure some will love this story, it just wasn't for me.

This much-anticipated follow-up to Jonathan Auxier’s exceptional debut, Peter Nimble and His Fantastic Eyes, is a Victorian ghost story with shades of Washington Irving and Henry James. More than just a spooky tale, it’s also a moral fable about human greed and the power of storytelling. The Night Gardener follows two abandoned Irish siblings who travel to work as servants at a creepy, crumbling English manor house. But the house and its family are not quite what they seem. Soon the children are confronted by a mysterious spectre and an ancient curse that threatens their very lives. With Auxier’s exquisite command of language, The Night Gardener is a mesmerizing read and a classic in the making.Praise for The Night GardenerSTARRED REVIEWS "Lots of creepiness, memorable characters, a worthy message, Auxier’s atmospheric drawings and touches of humor amid the horror make this cautionary tale one readers will not soon forget." --Kirkus Reviews, starred review "Storytelling and the secret desires of the heart wind together in this atmospheric novel that doubles as a ghost tale." --School Library Journal, starred review "Auxier achieves an ideal mix of adventure and horror, offering all of it in elegant, atmospheric language that forces the reader to slow down a bit and revel in both the high-quality plot and the storytelling itself." --Bulletin of the Center for Children’s Books "All proper scary stories require a spooky, menacing atmosphere, and Auxier (Peter Nimble and His Fantastic Eyes) delivers the goods with his precise descriptions of the gothic setting and teasing hints of mystery and suspense." --The Horn Book MagazineSummer 2014 Kids' Indie Next List

The Night Gardener, by Jonathan Auxier

From School Library Journal Gr 4–6—Storytelling and the secret desires of the heart wind together in this atmospheric novel that doubles as a ghost tale. Irish immigrants to England, Molly and Kip make their way to the Windsor house in search of employment. The great house stands in the shadow of a menacing tree, which locals speak of only in fearful whispers. Despite her young age and the warnings of a local storyteller, Molly uses the power of her own words to secure work, but soon realizes that all is not right in the house. Constance, Bertrand, Penny, and Alistair Windsor each struggle with personal demons, and strange footprints appear at night. A malevolent spirit, the Night Gardener, haunts the estate, dooming its inhabitants with foul dreams while the tree grants wishes to entrap the recipients. Molly and Kip must face their own dark secrets to release the Gardener's hold and end his evil enchantments. Auxier gives readers a spooky story with depth and dimension. Molly's whimsical tales illustrate life's essential lessons even as they entertain. As the characters face the unhealthy pull of the tree's allurements, they grow and change, revealing unexpected personality traits. Storytelling as a force to cope with life's challenges is subtly expressed and adds complexity to the fast-paced plot. Readers of Mary Downing Hahn or Peg Kehret's ghost novels will connect with the supernatural elements and the independent child protagonists of Auxier's tale of things that go bump in the night.—Caitlin Augusta, Stratford Library Association, CT

From Booklist Auxier’s second novel is part morality play, part ghost story, and all enthralling. Molly and Kip are Irish orphans seeking employment in England after their parents die in a shipwreck. Brave, quick-thinking Molly is solicitous of her younger disabled brother, and she feels guilty because she has managed to hide the truth about their parents’ death from him, spinning yarns about their travels and promising they will all be together soon. Molly finds them work as servants in a distinctly creepy, isolated country manor where a huge tree growing into the house is casting a spell over the inhabitants, among other mysterious goings-on. Auxier, like Molly, is a born storyteller, and he weaves a tale that will keep readers glued to the page. The outcomes may be expected, but the journeys are riveting, while the predictability conjures the comfort and satisfaction of a classic fairy tale. Grades 6-9. --Debbie Carton

Gripping, Spooky, and Terrific By TeacherReader Molly and Kip are barely surviving when they are offered a job as servants at the supremely creepy, derelict Windsor estate. The people living there are pale, with sunken dark eyes. And the house is visited each evening by a mysterious "night man" who tends a strange tree. Soon Molly and Kip find themselves enmeshed in an ancient curse that threatens the lives of everyone at the Windsor estate. This book is terrific! The creepiness builds steadily until the unbelievably dark seems totally plausible. That's one reason why I typically avoid scary stories - they seem so fake that it's hard for me to buy in to them. In this case, however, Auxier has crafted a tale that is wholly believable. He does it by starting with mundane and carefully adding the creepy, ghost elements.Be warned, though, this book is not for the faint of heart. The idea of a creepy man walking around your house at night, standing over your bed, is sure to give some readers nightmares. Not to mention the collection of violent deaths and the super-creepy-soul-stealing tree.Wonderfully written, beautifully paced, and populated by a cast of richly interesting characters, The Night Gardener kept me totally glued to the page.

A Brilliantly Haunting Story By Mike Lewis Every now and again when we get really lucky, we encounter a story that reminds us why there’s nothing in the world that compares to finishing a really good book. For a reading teacher it’s an essential reminder that we must do more than deliver skills to kids. We need our students to experience what it’s like to lose themselves in a story. It is with the utmost reverence that I express how Jonathan Auxier’s forthcoming title, The Night Gardener has captured the very essence of a good story’s power. It’s a tale so etherial, it made the world around me feel two dimensional in comparison.Plenty of great books keep you entertained from the first page to the last. For me, the mark of an exceptional book is how much I remember about it weeks, months, even years after I’ve finished. It’s been six months and I can still feel the story. I can picture Constance’s ring falling off of her finger and the need to put the book down for a moment so I could take in how the action of a ring hitting the floor could evoke such terror. The deep pride I felt for Molly, who could take an ordinary button, what little she has to her possession, and transformed it into a sense of security for her brother. And Kip, who’s cheery, confident, and courageous demeanor preserved Molly’s true north. It’s not just the world, and characters, and tone of the book that still resonates. With its suspenseful spookiness, vivid world, endearing characters, and expert pacing, my hunch is that this is a book that will inspire the same feelings for many, many kids.I’m thankful for The Night Gardener. It’s a story that helps us see the person that we are and the person we want to become more clear. It’s a story that uniquely conveys to middle grade readers that good and evil within the human condition is not dichotomous. But most importantly It’s a story that enthralls and entertains. So if you’ve read the book already, go out and pick up a copies for the readers in your life. I fully believe there’s no better way to engender the respect and adoration of a child than to hand them an engrossing story and The Night Gardener fits the bill. By getting this book into the hands of as many readers as possible, we can all do our part this week to tell bookstores and publishers that we want more stories like The Night Gardener in the world.

The premise is intriguing, and the character of the Night Gardener himself is pleasingly creepy. But try as I might, I had a hard time suspending my disbelief. Part of the reason is the dialogue. The two main characters are meant to be Irish, but the author seems to have only a generalized idea of what that sounds like. Their speech veers from Irish to Scottish to Yorkshire, with lots of very modern-sounding American thrown in. (The story is set in the Famine of the 1840s.) In general, Auxier would have done better to suggest the dialect more subtly.Molly and Kip seemed to me like lesser versions of Lizzie Rose and Parsifal in Laura Amy Schlitz's wonderful *Splendors and Glooms*. To anyone looking for a brilliant and creepy historical adventure for young readers, I'd recommend Schiltz's novel without reservation.

This 40-page book is in rhyme and geared towards young kids. Great writing... wonderful, big illustrations on every page… perfect for reading to your pre-schooler, especially if you have pets. Only problem is that your kids are going to want you to read it to them again and again… but that's a good thing!

Children's imaginative minds, through the book's illustrations that catch one's attention and interest will generate the 'WHY' questions from them, which in turn, will make the book a very good tool for learning and enhancement of children's knowledge.

"The best way to coax a cat out of a tree is with much patience and perseverance." - Michael A. Weiss

Schizoid personality disorder is a challenging set of personality traits that leaves a person isolated and lonely, despite a strong longing that some schizoids have to belong and fit in with others. OCPD (Obsessive Compulsive Personality Disorder) is a pervasive personality with traits of rigidity, inflexibility, agitation, and stubbornness. Traits from one disorder often cross over into the other disorder, and many people with OCPD also have underlying schizoid tendencies.

In this audiobook, I hope to help you discover more information about schizoid personality disorder, its causes, and where you (or your friend) fall on the broad schizoid spectrum. We'll discuss different reasons that a person might have become schizoid and/or OCPD, including differences in the brain, head injury causes, and the different types of parenting in infancy that might have caused the disorder. We'll also discuss how a child with a more sensitive temperament is often the one who is more prone to becoming schizoid early in their development, and how this serves to protect them and cope with the things in their world which are strange and often scary to them.

When producing this audiobook, I consulted with my husband, who has experienced a majority of the schizoid traits for most of his life. He compensated for his schizoid traits and social ineptness by implementing many obsessive compulsive personality traits that make up his OCPD tendencies and his strict routines that he uses to calm and center himself.

0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. Good, but not truly about SPD. By Josh Were the title changed, the book would be quite great. But as-is, the title is largely misleading if not flat-out inaccurate. The descriptions herein are, by and large, not about SPD. The book is, in fact, much more accurately described as a book about Schizotypal Personality Disorder (STPD), which differs from SPD in very fundamental ways. The use of 'social anxiety' and 'fear' every other page is a good example of this misunderstanding. Schizoids, in general, don't prefer to be alone due to social anxiety, fear of failure to interact with others, fear of awkwardness, etc etc. They are simply *apathetic* about relationships, quite literally unable to see the value in them that a normal person does. A schizoid might simply say "I would be making more of my life were I doing X right now rather than chit-chatting with someone" -- that is to say, SPD is an issue of the brain's internal valuation of activities. SPD is mostly about apathy -- lack of desire to interact, be part of things, 'go with the flow,' often coupled with an acute inability to experience strong emotion. It is not about failure to interact due to fear.It may seem like semantics to some, but there's really a difference here, especially to someone who has SPD and is looking for help. As an SPD, much of this information is not helpful, and, in fact, quite agitating when it is describing STPD tendencies. After a while, it really started to grate on me how much the emphasis was on neglect, social inability, fear, ...none of which are part of me or the 'typical' SPD -- we're generally fully-capable of engaging in social activities and conversation without fear (in fact, the SPD's classic apathy concerning how others view them makes such a fear contradictory in the first place). The difference is that we don't want to, because we see no value in it. And that part is what I'm interested in, but did not get from this book. As an SPD, it would help me tremendously to understand why I don't value relationships, because -- and this part of the book is very much true -- humans are wired to require social interaction, and even in the absence of any desire to interact, negative effects still accumulate without social interaction.Again, the book was well-done, but needs a change of title. If the information I have provided is disputed, please refer to the DSM-V. The diagnostic criteria of SPD start on page 653, and for STPD, on page 655. You will find that SPD, as described by the latest DSM, is not congruent with the author's definition. To be fair, neither is STPD. But certainly, I feel that it is of utmost importance in any book describing SPD, that it be made clear that the individual is not suffering from anxiety or loneliness, but is genuinely more content without (many) relationships or social interactions. It has taken me quite some time to explain this to others, who, being normal people, don't believe it's possible to not want social interaction and think that beneath the apathetic exterior is a lonely puppy crying "I just want to be lovedddd." That's a cute image...but it's not what you'll find inside an SPD. Only apathy and the desire to go off and read more books on maths and science :)All the best to you and your husband. I still give 4 stars for the effort that I know you guys put into this and I'm sure it will end up helping many people regardless of naming (just not me, sadly!)

0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. you are awesome as always By Connie Brown Dorma, it is always a delightful pleasure to read your books. But I wondered how you were going to end the series. Well Girl, you are awesome as always! You really rounded it off and you left no stones un-turned. Claire was her sweet and giving self, as always. And Ray, (What A Man!) was Ray. In other word, he was the lover of all things that was Claire. I like the way you dealt with all the Family and Friends situations. Especially the situation between Claire and her sister's annoying fireman boyfriend. Yep, Ray nipped that in the bud, in the most Ray-like fashion. And the part where Petey had a momentary lapse of sanity at the funeral/wedding in regards to the ex-wife, really cracked me up. Now that was side-splitting funny! The Club fight scene was another part of the book that I liked. Girl, I felt like I was in the Club with Ray, cheering him on. As a matter of fact, the whole Family and Friends situations were all on point. Now for the ending. I really hate to see the ending of this series because I enjoyed the books so very much. But even I know all good things must come to an end. And Dorma, you really did a great job! I was very pleased with how you handled this last book. Even the parts of Ray's situation had a sense of triumphancy.Dorma, thank you once again for sharing your writing talent with us. And please know that these books will always hold a very special place on MY book shelf.

A bitter civil war from a world of magic has spilled over into the small California town of San Luis Obispo. In a desperate act, a warrior from the world of Ruach gives soul armors—the ultimate weapons of his world—to four high school students. This sounds like the exact opposite of how Vero would like to spend her senior year. Poor and new to the area, she finds surviving in her new surroundings hard enough without stepping into the middle of a war of wizards. Unfortunately, two soldiers from the other world know what she looks like and want her dead. In the small town of San Luis Obispo, it’s only a matter of time before they find her. She might have to fight, whether she wants to or not.

The Rift (Volume 1), by J.T. Stoll

About the Author J.T. Stoll wrote his first fantasy story when he was five. The prose was… brilliant. The accompanying stick figure illustrations… breathtaking. The lack of complex vocabulary underlies the deeper human condition. It was terrible. His mother refuses to destroy the only copy because it has “sentimental value.” He has always loved fantastical stories of all kinds: fantasy novels, 16-bit RPGs, superhero movies, whatever. If reading helps to escape the real world, why not go somewhere fun? J.T. lives in San Luis Obispo County, California in a classy bachelor pad. He enjoys rock climbing, software development, and cooking amazing food.

Seems like there is a lot more coming judging by the ending, and I am looking forward to it. Stoll does a great job developing a set of characters, an interesting plot, and a new "universe" while hooking you to want more. I will definitely grab the next book in this series when it comes out.It should be mentioned that this is more of a novella than a novel, so it is perfect if you are looking for a weekend read but don't want a huge commitment.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. A Refreshingly Fun YA With Suspense and Engaging Characters By Morrigu This book is one of the most realistic and fun teenage fantasy books I've read recently. You see a lot of teen fantasies these days that really glorify the main heroes and heroines in a very unrealistic way, making them very fantasy-like themselves and unrealistic. The Rift puts normal, ordinary-day teens in a supernatural situation. This provides the reader a lot of entertainment! We get a lot of laughs from seeing these ordinary teens learn to deal with crazy, fantastical events and people bombarding their world. We also see how these ordinary teens become inordinary and heroic from the journey in this story. That is MUCH more satisfying than other books' wooden, glorified teen heroes. The Rift acts as a prequel which is full of suspense and rushes you into action, and leaves you hanging at the end of a breathtaking cliff. It promises that when you fall off that cliff, info the sequels to this book, it will be an awesome ride! I really look forward to reading more of Stoll's work. His writing and his characters have a lot of promise. I also want to say I love the fantasy elements in this book. Stoll makes original magic and describes in a way that isn't too overly-laden with unnecessary description (like many other fantasy authors).Hurrah for a new, breakout YA fantasy author! Check this out - you won't regret it!

Very short, satisfying as a first volume but I'm looking forward to reading the final book in the series. There are some interesting fantasy elements on which I am left wanting expansion, and a fair number of questions left unanswered, so it doesn't quite work as a stand-alone, but it's not trying to be :) Worth the read, but don't expect it to feel complete.Stoll deals with some intense themes in a raw and honest and yet delicate way, but then there are also plenty of moments that had me laughing aloud. The characters are fun and relatable, and the relationships between them feel authentic: their perspectives give the story a unique angle that keeps the plot from being too cliche. Definitely a page turner.

"Gripping and heart-wrenching." True Calling, Book 1, is free to download from this site. Ariana Skyee has been the center of Zane Anders’ world for years. They got together as a couple ten months ago, so Zane finally has the girl of his dreams. Life should be peachy. But it isn’t. Haunted by a shared secret that threatens to destroy their relationship and claim their sanity, Zane is on a one-man mission to prevent Ari from falling apart. Then Commander Skyee drops the biggest bombshell of all and everything Zane has taken for granted about the future is shattered overnight. Always and Forever: That’s what Zane has promised Ari. Keeping that promise is about to become the hardest thing he will ever do. WILL I ENJOY THIS BOOK? True Calling is an enthralling young adult science fiction fantasy romance series that has earned rave reviews from readers who enjoyed popular series like The Hunger Games, Divergent, Matched, The Selection, The 100, 1984, and it’s even been favorably compared to the movie Elysium. Set between two vastly different worlds (utopian vs. dystopian) and told from two different perspectives, this series will appeal to readers who enjoy any of the following genres: Teen and Young Adult, Science Fiction (soft), Dystopian, Romance, Fantasy, Paranormal or Supernatural, Urban Fantasy. PRAISE FOR LIGHT OF A THOUSAND STARS: "Emotional and bittersweet, exactly what I hoped for and more." Lola's Reviews "Gripping and heart-wrenching." Crazy Beautiful "Love this novella. We find out why people moved to Planet Novo, the reason is explosive...." Goodreads Reviewer "I knew I would have my heart torn out. Light of a Thousand Stars is in a word, brilliant." Tome Tender "Through it all, I was crying inside, especially knowing what's in store for these two." Patricia Hamill. PureTextuality NOTE FROM THE AUTHOR: This novella is narrated solely from Zane Anders' point of view, and it depicts the events leading up to Ari's move to Planet Novo. This is NOT a follow on from where Beyond Reach, the second novel in the series, left off. This relays events prior to True Calling, the first novel, however, I recommend reading it after Beyond Reach and before Destiny Rising to maximize reading enjoyment. This series is written in US English. I recommend reading it in the following order: True Calling Lovestruck Beyond Reach Light of a Thousand Stars Destiny Rising Full Series bundle also available.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Heartbreaking. Short, but not too short. By Trish (I read too much!) This is a short story in the True Calling series told from Zane’s perspective. This is dubbed 2.5, but it is set before True Calling takes place, just before Ariana and her family move to Novo. Those who have read True Calling or Beyond Reach will already have some idea of Zane and Ariana’s backstory and a pretty solid handle on how much he loves her, but Light of a Thousand Stars really brings it home.I must say that through it all, I was crying inside, especially knowing what’s in store for these two. Still, it’s a beautiful love story, a tragedy in the making, but beautiful. One of my favorite things about the series so far, and this short story is no exception, is how well the author wrenches emotion out of every word. Subtle, never forced.Another thing I liked about this story is how it transitions, starting off as a sweet little romance and gradually morphing into the makings of a gripping dystopian. We see it all going down from Zane’s perspective, particularly the personal impact. More and more questions are introduced, and answers to questions remaining from Beyond Reach are hinted at, tantalizingly, but never answered. This isn’t just a book I couldn’t put down (finished in about two days), but a series I cannot put down. All I can say is wow!All that being said, I still don’t buy the scientific plausibility of the near-Earth planet, Novo, but it works for a YA dystopian. So overall, I loved it. It may be short, but it isn’t too short, and it’s just as emotionally charged as the others in the series, though not as action packed. I think the story was written to whet everyone’s appetite for the third book, and it has done just that for me.I received an ARC of this book from the author in return for an honest review.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. It was nice to see Zane when he was younger and how ... By A. Hodges It was nice to see Zane when he was younger and how it all began. You could feel his emotions throughout the whole story.I had a slightly harder time reading this story than all the rest of them from the series, but that is because I think I have fully accepted that I am Team Cal. So to see Ariana with Zame in this story was weird. Though I know they were together before she went to Novo, it was still hard to read it when I know who I want her to be with. That doesn't mean I didn't enjoy the story. I loved it! Siobhan is one of those authors that I think I will read anything she writes. She has such a wonderful flow to all that she does.Zane is such a sweetheart and has good morals. He does all that he can for Ariana. It is so dang sweet. He goes out of his way to do anything she asks of him.Ariana is still her stubborn self in this book. She has had something happen to her that has made her that way. We get small little hints as we go along but we never really know what it truly is. I think this has traveled with her even after her mind was wiped. She feels weary of others still even though I don't think she really knows why.You are left with a cliffhanger of what happens to Ariana. I was hoping that we would find out at the end of the book, but I think it is going to be brought up in book 3 now. That is okay with me. I can't wait to get my hands on the final book in the series and see how it all ends. This book gives you a good glimpse at the before and then the other books cover the after. It is definitely a big difference. You can see how things progressed rapidly and how things turned out. This is the definition of the calm before the storm. It was a nice treat to see them as kids and the free spirits that they had. They change so much, but you still see their personalities just as brightly in this story as the rest of the story. They stay true to themselves, even if the world forces them to grow up a little faster than expected.I loved this book and I can't wait to get the last one! I hope if you haven't read this series yet, you go out and get them all right now! You won't be sorry.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. A wonderfully intriguing addition to the True Calling Trilogy By Amazon Customer A message to all lovers of a great YA story: you must read Light of a Thousand Stars! A short novella following Zane and Ariana’s love story before she left for Novo, it’s a small extra to the brilliant world of the True Calling books. The author’s writing flows as well as ever, making Light of a Thousand Stars unbeatably un-put-down-able.The characters invoke huge empathy within the reader, and their actions and behaviour in this novella helps to further justify their later actions and behaviour (i.e. in True Calling, Beyond Reach and presumably the third book in the trilogy). I found that the intense emotions between Ariana and Zane changed my thoughts on their relationship and the current love triangle, producing complications for book 3.The plot has you on the edge of your seat, with a rather large secret that is concealed from the reader. Fast-paced tension and action with romance is a great combination of genres in any book or film, and the author delivered this on every level. The superb description and imagery created an extraordinarily real universe that I would love to live in. The True Calling trilogy is the next top YA dystopian series, and to get the most out this world, read Light of a Thousand Stars to enlighten yourself about the wonders of both behind why the move to Novo occurred and the story of Ariana and Zane.

All three stories in the esteemed Promises Series together in one book! Promises Hurt (Book #1) I wasn't planning on falling for Ethan Jamison, hell I wasn't planning on our paths ever crossing. He’s the most popular guy at school and a complete player. Me; I’m the perpetual good girl, trying to carry out one last request. But when you make a promise, how far do you go to see it through? ~ Blair It’s a running joke that I’m a terrible liar, if only people knew the truth. My whole life has been spent making excuses and deflecting questions. I was pretty good at it until Blair Thomas entered my world. She saw through the mask that everyone is so willing to accept. She makes me want to tell her all my secrets, but can she promise to keep them? ~ Ethan Forgotten Promises (Book #2) Saying “I Promise” is the easiest thing to do, its just two tiny words. No one warned me of the weight they hold, that they not only have the power to make something, to give hope, or show devotion. They can destroy everything, cause so much hurt, ruin lives. Every promise holds a toll, if I had known what mine would cost me, I would have walked away. Now I have to pay the price, watch the consequences of my actions unfold. Witnessing someone I love crumble after breaking my oath isn’t the hardest thing I’ve endured, it's being forgotten by the one person that I could never forget. Empty Promises (Book #3) What would you do if you knew when you were going to die? Would you will death to come and claim you quickly? Or would you pray for more time? It wasn’t until I knew that I was about to die, that I decided to really live. And it wasn’t until I gave up on love, that I finally found it. Just not in any of the places that I’d been searching. Sometimes you don’t get the fairytale happily ever after, but if you’re lucky, you get so much more. You get a perfect beginning that you can keep hold of until the end. ~ Emily

You made me feel everything for these characters. You had me hyperventilating from the minute I read the prologue. I kept repeating to myself…. It can’t be, it better not be…. With tears in my eyes I really wasn’t sure I wanted to read on….. But thank God I kept reading. What a remarkable, heart pounding, emotional and intense rollercoaster it was.My tears were many, my heart was hurting. This is a beautiful, powerful, heart wrenchingly real story which had me sobbing for a miracle. It made my heart ache and my eyes hurt from the tears I couldn’t keep at bay.

Katie's reasons why it's better to be Melody: -She's a boy magnet. I'm more like a boy repellent.-Her parents never make her do any chores. Meanwhile, I get stuck babysitting almost every day. -Melody's parents are still married. Mine are, too . . . to other people.

Why Melody thinks Katie has the ideal life:-Her house is fun and lively. My house is empty and lonely. -They have family dinners practically every single night. My dad almost never comes home. -Everyone always talks about how pretty I am, like that's the most important thing, like that's all I am . . .

Twelve-year-old Katie is insanely jealous of her best friend, Melody. Turns out Melody is jealous of Katie, too. When they both wish for the exact same thing at the exact same time, to redo summer as each other, their wishes come true. Katie is Melody and Melody is Katie and neither one has the experience she expected. In this be-careful-what-you-wish-for tale, two best friends learn that the grass is not always greener on the other side.

If I Were You, by Leslie Margolis

From School Library Journal Gr 5–7—Best friends and soon-to-be seventh graders Katie and Melody each think the other has the ideal life. Katie envies Melody's perfect parents, gorgeous boyfriend, and beautiful body, while Melody longs for a more close-knit family and a figure that won't solicit unwanted attention from strangers. In the spirit of Mary Rodgers's Freaky Friday (HarperCollins, 1972), Katie and Melody find themselves in one another's bodies after a well-timed wish on the last day of summer. Predictably, as the summer resets and each girl lives the other's life, she begins to realize that the grass may not be quite so green on the other side. Once this realization is achieved, Margolis brings the story to a quick, tidy resolution. Katie and Melody are sympathetic characters, and tween readers will relate to the envy that twines its way through their friendship. The chapters alternate between the two girls, and while their points of view and family lives are in stark contrast, their narrative voices are less distinct. This book doesn't have much to add to the body-switch formula, but readers looking for a summertime read with boys and best friends will enjoy it. VERDICT An additional purchase for many collections.—Lauren Strohecker, McKinley Elementary School, Abington School District, PA

SMH By Momof2inNY Granted, my 10-year old enjoyed the read.. but when she told me that on page 3 one of the girls saw her bestie (age 12!) in a hot tub kissing a boy (her "future boyfriend" as the story was told), I was not happy. Disappointed that a Scholastic book for tweens would give the thumbs up to 12-year olds that this is appropriate, or normal behavior for young girls their age. For this reason, I can not recommend the book for the 9-13 age group. Its a shame, too, as the theme, "grass is not always greener" is one that I felt would have been beneficial.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Great book with a walking in the other person's shoes message By Ly G It is an updated freaky Friday but with friends instead of family members. The 'walk in someone else's shoes' story is usually a good theme.I quite liked that it was a friend switching instead of a family switching. It was nice to see the change of what you think someone else's life is like in a dynamic of home life and parent's expectations and how maybe being the cute girl with the guy isn't really as awesome/important as you think it might be.Maybe it is more of a parent trap/freaky Friday mix. Since its girls the same age changing lives parent trap style, but they have to change bodies freaky Friday style. Either way. This one is done pretty well and is a good read for tweens who can use a reminder that everyone has their own individual struggles.

I just started the book 2 days sago and I was up at midnight last night reading it. I couldn't stop This is the best book I have ever read in all of my 10 years. This book is great for 9-14 year old girls. There is Drama,Comedy, adventure and thrill. I have a 11th grade reading level and this book was perfect for me.I liked it because it also had to do with the beach and surfing, and I am a total beach bum. XoXo

By carissa backherms I bought this book for my kindle, but I plan on getting a hard copy to keep for my daughter and I. Its pages are filled with beautiful images and words, sentiments to a daughter from her mother. As a mother myself, I found myself laughing aloud and getting teary-eyed. I even read some to my own daughter. This is a lovely book that I'll read again, and I highly recommend it. Splendid job, Mary Lee!Carissa Ann Lynch

Each flower is so vivid and colorful. This would make a lovely gift on a special birthday, like a 21st, to a daughter from her mother. You read the book in landscape orientation so the images are displayed at their best. My favorite page is "You are adventurous".
