Chambers The book includes two children's stories - fairy tales about young princesses, one who wants to marry the king's musician, the other about a princess who wants a very special birthday gift from her father the king. In "The Musician and the King," Albert and Sarah were in love and wanted to be married. Albert asked the king for the princess's hand in marriage. The king wasn't opposed to the idea, but he required Albert to pass three tests first. For a musician, the tests were very daunting, but Albert was determined to pass them - and he had friends who could help! In "Alicia and the Unicorn," Princess Alicia's birthday was approaching, and she wanted a new crown fit for a queen. With her father the king denying her a queen's crown, Alicia's second choice was a unicorn, a fabled animal that was thought to only exist in fairy tales. They're two enjoyable illustrated stories that are ideal for bedtime reading to young ladies in your family. Each story has enough suspense to hold children's attention while the stories are read to them, and the "lived happily ever after" endings are quite satisfying.

By Kellen My children are truly excited about the series of books written by Francois Bissonnette called Stories for children. This book is the ninth in the series. The cover has a picture of a unicorn and my little Sonia insisted in getting it for her. She relished the other books so much that I will probably ending up having to get them all. As a mother I must admit the joy of reading these stories for them. Danny, my other child is old enough to read. I let him read for himself and his sister, this makes good practice. The stories herein are original and remind me of tales my grandma used to read for us when I was a child. One story is about the love of princes Sarah and Albert the musician. To add value to this story it teaches us a lesson about perseverance and overcoming obstacles. It was truly an original story. Another part of the book is a story about Alicia, a little princess who loves pink. Sonia made me read that story three times. My girl loves pink and unicorns. I don’t know any girls who don’t. I must admit this story is adorable. It was about a princess her dad and the kindness of a unicorn.

But it was not until 1998, a few years after the birth of his two daughters, that the author published his first book of Zirons. And lucky for all that he has embraced a new direction. These little stories involve imagination, realism, surrealism, and magic and are bound to be favorites of children throughout the world. But now François visits that time-honored land of fairy tales in this Book 9 of his Stories for Children. In this book the fantasies are accompanied by richly colored photographs of models in costumes to match the story - a new and welcome addition to the quality of the book.François believes these two stories in this volume are best suited for children age 6 through 12: they also are so picturesque and fun to read that adults will also enjoy them. ‘The Musician and the Princess’ tells of Albert, the king’s musician and Sarah, the king’s princess daughter Sarah. They are in love and wish to marry. The king likes Albert and does not prevent the feelings the couple has, but though money is not a factor, the king is afraid that Albert, being simply a musician cannot provide the protection his daughter needs. After Albert reassures the king that he would give his life for Sarah, the king puts him to three tests – a fight with a knight (Albert suggest the fight be at night) in the forest – and Albert engages the help of his friend the grizzly bear and wins. The second test is in archery and again Albert suggest the test be a night and this time Albert is aided with an owl who flies his arrow to its target. The third test is a horse race with one of the king’s squires. Albert meets with the horses and his friends tell him which one is fastest – and of course Albert passed the test and he and Sarah are married and live happily ever after. Sometimes your best friends are in nature! In ‘Alicia and the Unicorn’ Alicia is a princess in The Rickward Kingdom and her father is king Richard. Alicia is about to celebrate her 7th birthday at a big party. When asked what she wants for her birthday she first asks for a crown, but the eking says her mother is the queen and should wear the crown, so Alicia wishes for a – Unicorn! Her father had always told her of a unicorn in the distant forest, but the king puts his daughter’s wishes off, refusing to do fetch the unicorn. So Alicia, brave as she is, ventures into the forest, encounters a wolf who introduces her to the unicorn. But the unicorn can’t be Alicia’s present because he must stay in the forest as the spirit of the forest, but he reassures Alicia that they can always be friends – and that is enough for any little girl – to have a unicorn as a friend.Fun tales with beautiful photographs brings this charming little book to life! Grady Harp, August 15

The pictures are adorable, as well, and will hold the attention of the little ones in your 'reading group'!The first one is titled 'Roco and Binky' and it features a golden dog (Roco) and a brown rabbit (Binky). Roco likes to wander when his owners are out and the two share quite an adventure together... There are some 'big' words to explain to your children such as 'transformed', 'working dogs' and 'powerful'. In this story all is well that ends well and the two animals learn two lessons. The first about teamwork and the second is not to go too far away from home. The second one is titled 'The Lamb and the Dog'. A little lamb named Fluffy is too adventurous and she wanders away from the rest of the lambs. She meets some animals along the way including Nutter the Squirrel, Squeakers the Mouse, Ears the Rabbit and finally a WOLF! Fluffy also learns a valuable lesson about not going off by yourself. And, she learns that the sheepdog is an ally and not an enemy@.Most highly recommended for both the adorable pictures and the lessons to be learned.

Excellent book for small children who love cute animals, wonderful pictures By Kellen I read this book to my two children, Danny and Sonia on my kindle cloud. We got the book because my children love animals and the pictures in the front cover were so cute that Sonia insisted to see more. The first story in the book was about Roco and Binky; it was adorable. It is a story of friendship between a rabbit and a dog. My children loved the story. The aspect of the book we liked the most is the charming pictures that come just about every page. This book also covers another story, which my Danny got really excited about because it was an unrelated adventure with new characters. This book is for little kids. I honestly believe any small child under the age of seven would really appreciate this book. Every story in the book has something positive to teach, it is safe for children to read.

The first story involves a tale of friendship between a dog and a rabbit. The second story goes into lessons learned from a lamb's point of view after a day of adventure. Both are very easy to go through, although my only desire would be that there are more pictures to help illustrate the stories better for the younger ones who need more visual stimulation. Still, what a great find!

The attackers violently and systematically murder everyone aboard. Only Frances, her friend Libby, and two others manage to escape. To protect Frances from the attackers, Libby's father proposes she adopt Libby's identity. Two others have survived the disaster, Senator Wells and his son Grey. At first, Frances is ecstatic; she and Grey fell in love with each other on the cruise. It comes as a shock when she learns they are not telling the truth about the cause of the disaster. Frances suspects Senator Wells may have been behind the attack, and her bitterness at the loss of her family, friend, and identity causes her to plot revenge. After four years, she is finally ready to put her plan into motion. Can she suppress her feelings and enact her vengeance on Grey and his family? Is she able to reconcile herself with the loss of who she was as Frances Mace with who she is now: some caricature of Libby O'Martin? Review “There’s a Gone Girl quality to [Daughter of Deep Silence] . . . Frances’/Libby’s careful research, plotting, and design…are reminiscent of Amy Dunne’s craftiness. 8 of 9 people found the following review helpful. An EPIC revenge story you DON'T want to miss... By Alicia 4.5 STARSDAUGHTER OF DEEP SILENCE was the most fascinating, most original, most thrilling, and most intriguing book I have read in a very long time! I've read so many great book this year, but DAUGHTER OF DEEP SILENCE was so different then any of them that it made it stand out from the crowd, and made me see it in a different point view. The concept of DAUGHTER OF DEEP SILENCE was fascinating, and the more I read, the more I wondered how I would feel and what I would do if I was put in the same situation as Frances. And every angle I looked at it, their was no good outcome! And I could fiercely understand why Frances dedicated her life for revenge. And the way she devised her viscus plan was not only devious and conniving, but also down right brilliant and fabulous. And though some may not find the justice in the vengeance and revenge that Frances dished out, but I surly did. I guess that's why I connected with this book the way I did. Like Libby AKA Frances said:"There's no better feeling than the deliciousness of a well-crafted plan executed perfectly."I think that says it perfectly...Carrie Ryan is absolutely brilliant!! This is my first revenge story, and though the whole vowing vengeance on someone is not a plot that I particularly love, but not one I hate either. But something about DAUGHTER OF DEEP SILENCE drew me in and had me desperately craving it's vindictive adventure. Although I still don't think revenge stories will become one of my favorite genres, but if their as fierce, plot driven, and skillfully written as Ryan's, then I would jump at the chance for another good revenge story like this!I loved the world-building of the DAUGHTER OF DEEP SILENCE! It intrigued me from the minute I read the synopsis. And I'm not just talking about the revenge perspective of it either. I'm talking about the whole idea about a ship of people being murdered and it twisted to be a natural disaster. And the aspect of falling in love on a dazzling ship, and then having it all ripped away by a vicious event that changed their lives forever. And I LOVED the idea of a Titanic-like novel, but with the revenge twist!!But I have to admit, as much as I loved this book I still found certain parts to be a little absurd, and over the top. I can't say what these issues were without spoiling it for you, and trust me, you don't want me to do that. But their wasn't too many of those parts, but the ones that were made me want to scream at Frances/Libby and say "Girl, what the heck are you doing????"THE PLOT:~ FOUR YEARS AGO ~Frances Mace just wanted to enjoy a luxury's cruise with her family. Just wanted to reap the perks of young love found adrift a beautiful ship. To cherish the bounds of newly formed friendship discovered in the beauties of the ocean sea. To feel alive as she spreads her wings and sails the oceans vast body. Feeling the soft caress of water spraying up and flying in the air like the promise of true freedom. All of those wondrous glories were found and lost the night the Persephone bleed red. When the joyous yacht that brought her to life, quickly drained it all away, taking her sanity with it. The night god turned his back on the Persephone and the 327 souls aboard. Because before the night is through, only 4 souls will remain. But before the week is out, only 3 living souls would be left to tell the tale of the night the Persephone was attacked, leaving the walls painted in crimson and screams echoing in the vast waters, replaying the horrors of the night the world ended on the Persephone. And that is the night all became silent in Frances's heart, and she became the Daughter Of Deep Silence...~ PRESENT TIME ~There has only been one word that has kept Frances Mace going since that blood-soaked night four years ago when her world ended, REVENGE... One penetrating thought that has fueled her heart to carry on, RETRIBUTION.... One outcome that thrives in the back of her mind, TRUTH... One way to get it all... DECEPTION....After the agonizing seven days adrift in the ocean sea, Frances was finally rescued and pulled aboard Libby's father ship to the horrifying extent of her situation, and the devastating truth that she is absolutely and utterly alone. But somehow in the midst of all the death and destruction three survivors were left standing. But two of the three survivors are lying about that fateful night on the Persephone that ended the world she once knew. And Frances Mace knows with absolute certainty, that she was never suppose to make it off that yacht. And if she wants to live long enough to tell her tale, then she must remain silent, at least for now...She's been bidding her time four years, lying low and remaining silent as the sea. Building her plan and researching everything possible about every pawn on her game board. Because the game is now ready to be played, the pieces are all lined up, every last detail played out in her mind, every angle mapped out to turn around in her benefit. And now it's finally time, time to put it all in motion and end this once and for all. It's time to make Senator Wells and his son and love of her life pay. Because Libby is going home, and all the unknowing pawns are going to come crashing down around her, and all will finally be revealed for the rest of the world to see...Overall, the DAUGHTER OF DEEP SILENCE was more then I anticipated and so much more then I ever dreamed it could be. I loved everything about this book, the characters, the atmosphere, the world-building, the plot, the revenge aspect, I LOVED IT ALL!! And though I did find certain situations a little much, and not as realistic as I would of liked. But I'm assuming you'll find that in any good revenge story as the author has to push the boundaries of what a person is capable of under the pressure of betrayal. But nevertheless, even with its minor flaws, the DAUGHTER OF DEEP SILENCE was still epic in more ways then one, and I am so happy I decided to give it its fair shot! Ryan has definitely just made my new list of favorite authors for 2015.NOTE: I received a physical ARC from Putnam Juvenile (Penguin) for reviewing purposes! Frances is one of the few survivors of the destruction of the Persephone; more importantly, she’s the only survivor who’s willing to face the truth of what happened. The two other survivors, a Senator and his son, claim a rogue wave destroyed the ship, but Frances knows everyone on board was murdered at gunpoint. After rescue, she takes on the identity of Libby O’Martin, a girl she met on the ship. Frances is determined to get revenge for the murders of her parents and the life she lost.Fast forward four years. Frances has seamlessly become Libby, and now she’s out to destroy the Senator and his son for covering up the truth about the Persephone. The only snag in her plan? The Senator’s son - Grey - is her first love. They also met on the ship, and somehow fell in love in a few days. When she sees him again, Frances is torn between her revenge and loving Grey.I found DAUGHTER OF DEEP SILENCE skewed too far in the unbelievable romance direction for me to enjoy the book at all. I wanted to put the book aside by page 8, after I read, “It didn’t matter that I’d known him barely a week, it had been long enough to fall for him with an intensity I’d never experienced before (p. 8).” Okay, I get that they’re both fourteen at the time, and swept away by each other, but when Frances encounters him years later? When she’s putting her revenge plans underway? She’s pretty much in love with him all over again, and the Frances part of her that’s hiding inside the Libby disguise wants to throw all caution to the wind and be loved again. To top that off, I’m not sure why Frances liked Grey at first -- maybe because he was the first boy that showed her attention? I don’t know. You can’t just tell me that they fell in love in a few days and it’s a “relationship” that overcomes her desire to get revenge for the murder of her parents and hundreds of other people.DAUGHTER OF DEEP SILENCE requires a *lot* of suspension of disbelief: that Libby and Frances looked enough alike for Frances to assume Libby’s identity; that Frances and Grey fell in love at first sight; that Frances can carry out such a complicated revenge plot without any real experience; etc., etc. I also found the author’s writing style to be somewhat stilted, with lots of telling that didn’t add to the suspense for me. The pace was super slow, and I skimmed a lot of the book because I just wasn’t interested in what was going on. The only reason I kept reading? I wanted to find out why everyone on the Persephone was murdered. But even that wasn’t too interesting. I wish I’d gone with my instincts and put DAUGHTER OF DEEP SILENCE down after the first few chapters.

The cover made it almost look like a fantasy to me, but the blurb made it relatively obvious that it wasn't. I'm not much for suspense, and I didn't know if this book would venture too far into that territory for me to love it. Still, I was definitely intrigued ...Well, it turns out, I loved this book!!The book starts out with Frances being rescued after being adrift at sea for over a week. She and her friend Libby escaped their cruise shop when all of its inhabitants were brutally murdered, but unfortunately, Libby wasn't able to last long enough to be rescued. When Libby's father finds out what happened and that the murders are being covered up, he comes up with a plan - have Frances pretend to be Libby so that he can protect her. Frances is now an orphan with seemingly nothing in life to go back to, so she agrees. But she spends the next four years plotting how she can discover the secrets of why everyone on the ship was murdered and expose the truth. What I loved:Shipwreck!Okay, I was pretty much fascinated by this book from the get-go. Ryan did a fabulous job with the mystery, giving you more and more details of what happened on the ship the night it was attacked and what happened to Libby and Frances as the book went on. I savored each piece of information as it was unfurled! Plus, it's a shipwreck - those are just inherently interesting, as far as I'm concerned.Inner turmoil.Yes, there was suspense and mystery to this book, but I would actually say that it was mostly about Frances's struggle to come to terms with everything that had happened to her. The tragedy of watching her parents (and others) being killed and watching her best friend die followed her throughout her life, and she simply could not let these things go. The attack haunted her and her quest for revenge took over her life. Then there was the identity crisis - Frances had to learn to be Libby, and in many ways, she lost herself in the process. She buried herself when Libby's body was buried with her name. She lost her friends and her family and her very sense of self. And she never felt like she could truly make connections with people under her assumed identity. The only thing that kept her going was the idea of getting revenge, even on the boy who she had once been in love with.Grey and Shepherd. Both Grey (the boy who Frances was in love with on the ship, who was now participating in the cover-up) and Shepherd (the boy that Libby was in love with when she died) played major roles in this book and I kind of loved both of them. I was glad that there was no love triangle, though - while Shepherd did have some confused feelings for Frances because he thought she was Libby, nothing ever came of it. In the end, Shepherd ended up being a true friend - someone who was willing to tell it to Frances like it was and helped her come to terms with who she was and who she truly wanted to be. Grey was haunted by the night on the ship as well, so it was hard not to sympathize with him, but it was also incredibly hard not to be suspicious of him. That made for some great suspense in the romance department! The ending. The ending was pretty open-ended, which I don't always love. But in this case, I was okay with it because I thought that we got enough closure to feel hopeful about where things might end up going and we're left with the idea that, no matter what happens, Frances is going to be okay. She's conquered most of her demons and is ready to move on.Neutral:Love at fourteen. The only thing that held be back from absolute adoration of this book was the idea that Frances and Grey fell in love on a one week cruise when they were fourteen and it was supposed to be this deep connection that somehow lasted four years of separation - even if neither Grey or Frances totally understood or believed that. Oh, and Libby and Shepherd were also deeply in love at fourteen (and Shepherd had ALSO held onto that love for four years, never losing the hope that they might somehow end up together still). I do believe in young love (my husband was only fifteen when we started dating!), but not when it develops in a week! So, why isn't this a complete negative? (You know my feelings about insta-love, so you're probably wondering how this didn't completely ruin the book for me.) A couple of reasons: First of all, I had to give Ryan a little bit of a pass because the love at fourteen was pretty much necessary for the plot to work. Frances had to have been young enough at the time of the shipwreck that it was believable that her facial features were still changing a bit as she grew and four years had to pass for that same reason - it was imperative to the story that people could believe that Frances was actually Libby. Also, the circumstances under which both young couples fell in "love" were pretty extreme - Frances and Grey had this huge (for them) first love experience and then immediately went through a completely traumatic shipwreck and lost each other. It's reasonable to think they would still have a lot of unresolved feelings about each other. Libby and Shepherd grew up together (almost as brother and sister, which I found a little bit ewww, but I gave Ryan a pass on this as well), so they had A LOT of history, even at the young age of fourteen. And again, being torn apart by tragic circumstances (but not being able to completely separate from each other) makes it more believable that Shepherd might have still been harboring feelings for Libby as well. So, while I did occasionally roll my eyes at the mentions of these characters' deep love at the age of fourteen, I was able to look past it.Daughter of Deep Silence is a grippingly suspenseful read with a strong focus on character development. The book explores what shapes identity and how we can sometimes lose ourselves along the way. I don't know why I haven't read Ryan before, but I will definitely be reading more of her in the future! I give it 4.5/5 stars.***Disclosure: I received this book from the publisher in exchange for an honest review. No other compensation was given and all opinions are my own.***

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. This is a fascinating look at animals and how they are able to eat their foods ... By Deb Is there such a thing as a critter that doesn't have a mouth? Almost everyone one would think that's not a possibility, but it is. The adult luna moth has such a short lifespan it doesn't need one. They "only live for about a week" so snacking on leaves is no longer necessary. Naturally the majority of animals do have mouths, but some have teeth while others such as the common snapping turtle "use the sharp edges of their jaws to eat both plants and animals."Birds of course don't have teeth, but rather use their beaks to access their food supplies. A grosbeak uses his beak to eat seeds, but red-shouldered hawks "have strong, curved beaks to tear the flesh of the animals they eat." If you've taken a close look at photographs of birds in this and other books, you've probably noticed each one is different. They have adapted to the type of food it eats. Why would an egret need such a long pointed beak? Perhaps that's something to think about as you study animal adaptation.Obviously birds don't have teeth, but what about a frog? Yes, they "have a row of very small teeth along the edge of their upper jaws and on the roof of their mouths." Unlike the common snapping turtle, a frog needs those teeth to hold onto their prey before swallowing them. In this book you'll get to check out many different types of animals and learn how they eat their food as well as get a close look at their teeth, if they have any. What kind of teeth do you up have to eat your food? You'll find out when you check out this book! This is a fascinating look at animals and how they are able to eat their foods. There are a lot of interesting facts and photographs that will keep even the most reluctant reader interested in the animal kingdom. Mary Holland's award-winning photographs make the book a standout one in her nature series books for children. The pages are filled with full color photographs, including insets of animal skulls, and fascinating facts that be of high interest to young animal lovers. In the back of the book there are four pages of activities as well as free complementary activities on the publisher's website.Accelerated Reader: 4.5Flesch-Kinncaid: 4.9Lexile: 920LFountas and Pinnell: NThis book courtesy of the publisher.

Educational Book about Animal's Teeth By Conny Title: Animal MouthsAuthor/Photographer: Mary HollandPublisher: Arbordale PublishingISBN: 978-1-62855-5615“Most humans eat plants and animals, which makes us omnivores. Like the opossum, we have many different kinds of teeth. How many kinds can you find when you open your mouth and look in the mirror?” Mary Holland asks in her children’s book, Animal Mouths.Second in the Animal Anatomy and Adaptation series, this thirty-two unnumbered page paperback with a thick folding jacket cover targets children ages four to eight years old who enjoy educational information about nature. With no scary scenes except the concern some young ones may have regarding capturing and eating other animals and insects, only one picture shows an insect in a bird’s mouth. The book may be best read out loud by adults to beginner readers due to some complicated wording. In this artistically photographed collection, what is inside the animals’ mouths is the focal point. Beginning with a moth, one learns as a caterpillar it has mouthparts but does not as an adult. Living for about a week, it does not eat so does not need to chew. While turtles have no teeth but strong jaws, birds use their beaks to grab and devour their prey. Frogs have small teeth on their upper jaws while snakes have sharp teeth that regrow if they are broken. Butterflies have proboscises; robber flies have piercing-sucking mouthparts. Herbivore animals have flat teeth with incisors, and carnivores’ teeth include canines. Omnivores have many different combinations of teeth. By understanding the differences between the animals and the many kinds of teeth, one can readily identify them in nature. The last four pages have more educational tools of learning activities for creative minds that involve other uses for mouths, a mammal teeth matching game, a bird beak puzzle of what they eat, and a glossary of teeth names. What makes this book fun is not only the impressive photographs and explanation of teeth, but also the informational data at the end for older readers. Any child will enjoy viewing the animals and insects from their skull formations to the up-close pictures that show the differences between species.Award-winning children’s book author, Holland is also a naturalist, nature photographer, and columnist living in Vermont with her dog. Having worked as a naturalist at New York’s Museum of the Hudson Highlands and the Massachusetts Audubon Society, she has written several children’s books.Rating: 4.5 of 5Thanks to Arbordale Publishing and Bookpleasures for furnishing this complimentary book in exchange for a review of the reader’s honest opinion.

By Literary Classics Book Reviews Every once in a while we come across a book which catches us off guard, captivating us with its content. Animal Mouths is one such book. Who knew there were so many interesting factoids about the mouths of animals? For instance, the Luna moth lives only for a week, and therefore does not need a mouth. Because snakes can open their mouths wider than their bodies, they are able to eat very large prey.Animal Mouths is full of fascinating details and facts and every page is filled with vivid close-up photographs to illustrate the points represented within the book. This book is excellent as a teaching tool and is highly recommended for classroom and school libraries. Children who are intrigued by wildlife will love this book which is sure to educate and enthrall young readers.

17 of 17 people found the following review helpful. Day-dreamy guilty pleasure read By Ellie P. (This review is a synopsis of the 3 book series, but doesn't contain major spoilers.)First of all — how beautiful are these covers? Honestly, they are breathtaking. In Illéa’s caste system, America Singer is a 5. That means that she, and her family, must find a career in the arts (regardless of the demand for their craft). America is lucky enough to have a beautiful singing voice and she loves to play instruments, so she doesn’t seem to mind too much. Illéa is a newly formed country set in the future consisting of North America and Latin America. The country is ruled by King Clarkson and Queen Amberly. They have a single heir, Maxon, and he has finally come of age. Unlike princesses, who are married off into other royal families, princes get to participate in the “Selection.” (Think The Bachelor, but with citizens of Illéa.)America doesn’t want to sign up because she has a secret love — Aspen. But the Selection will pay her poor family for participating, and Aspen insists that she try to have a chance at a better life. Marrying Aspen would downgrade her to a 6, only two steps away from homelessness and poverty. On the other hand, marrying Prince Maxon would make her a One, the highest caste in Illéa. When America is chosen to participate out of thousands of eligible young women, her family is ecstatic — the complete opposite of her feelings.America enters the glamorous, regal life of the royal family, and must compete with 34 other daughters of Illéa for the heart of Prince Maxon. At first, she isn’t interested. Why would she want some stuck-up prince when she has someone waiting for her at home? But Maxon isn’t what he seems, and it changes America’s plans…The first three books, The Selection, The Elite, and The One, embody the entirety of Prince Maxon’s Selection (the Elite are the top six, the One is the one he chooses). The books are filled with butterfly-in-stomach romance, catty girlfights, love triangles, and surprisingly some political strife. America grows with each book, becoming more and more of what Illéa needs in a Princess — but will she be the One Prince Maxon chooses?I purchased this in a beautiful 3-book box set that included a bonus from the novellas that Kiera Cass wrote from different characters’ points of view. I read these three books in record time — they were day-dreamy guilty pleasure reads, and I found myself continuously lost in world of Illéa.

I was wrapped into it from the first page. The main character, America, shows gumption and isn't your typical heroine who falls in love with a typical Prince. There weren't too many twists and turns in this book, but it was a great read if you are looking for something that isn't too time-consuming or anything you need to digest and ponder. It's a light read! The storyline is predictable, but it's YA. It's decent and it's good. Plus, it's really wholesome. You don't have to worry about anything in here to negatively influence a young girl.Great book!

'Being autistic, to me, means a lot of different things, but one of the best things is that I can be so happy, so enraptured about things no one else understands and so wrapped up in my own joy that, not only does it not matter that no one else shares it, but it can become contagious. This is the part about autism that I can never explain. This is the part I never want to lose.'

Julia Bascom's depiction of the joy of autistic obsessions tells a story about autism that is very rarely told. It tells of a world beyond impairments and medical histories, where the multiples of seven can open a floodgate of untranslatable joy, where riding a train can make everything feel perfectly sized and full of light, and where flapping your hands just so amplifies everything you feel.

The Obsessive Joy of Autism will resonate powerfully with other autistic people, and encourage those who have a person with autism in their lives to look out for that joy, to chase it, to get obsessed.

The author has autism and expresses Joy differently than non-autistic people. Intriguing and interesting, even to someone who's been on the autism journey for many years.

3 of 3 people found the following review helpful. lovely By Kristin This is a beautiful art interpretation of Julia Bascom's original blog post. I wish that I had known my son and I were on the spectrum when he was small, because this is a great book to read to a child and discuss. Even without a child to read to, though, this book is affirming and loving to read, and would make a great gift for an autistic loved one; if it were, perhaps, in every elementary classroom and library, maybe we would see more acceptance and less fear of differing neurotypes.

3 of 5 people found the following review helpful. Overpriced! By M.L. Norton Not what I expected. The book consists of only a few pages with lots of drawings but not much text.

The warm, tingly feeling that had been smack in the middle of Alvin Fernald's stomach ever since Miss Peppersmith had closed and neatly lined up her books that Friday afternoon, had grown bigger as he and Shoie walked home from school. Now, here, in his hand, was the reason why! Alvin's sixth sense tells him that the crumpled note holds a secret message in spy code, which is about to catapult the two seventh grade secret agents plus Alvin's younger sister Daphne, the Pest, into the intricacies of authentic code detection and the dangers of a newly stirred-up 100-year-old mystery. Even Alvin's Magnificent Brain is nearly put on overload before the bang-up solution to the code and the mystery carry the three agents to an ending that is satisfying to all...well, to almost all. This classic tale from 1963 includes Alvin's own notes on cryptography in an appendix at the back.

We both shared a fascination with codes and ciphers and spent time challenging each other, etc. This book grew out of that fascination. This is my favorite of my Dad's many children's books and remains a "good read" today. The field of cryptography has changed greatly with the advent of computers, but kids still enjoy protecting their secrets and trying to "crack" those of their friends. Although I may be a bit biased, I give this my highest rating! -- Dave Hicks

I think of it often and it has even had a positive influence on my career. I am delighted to see that it is still in print. This book is an excellent choice for inquisitive young people.

Tom Sawyer meets 007 By A Customer "Alvin's Secret Code" twines a good introduction to cryptography with a Civil War mystery and is thoroughly enjoyable throughout. When Alvin and his friend Shoie discover an encoded message, they think they're on the trail of an international spy ring in their small town (the copyright date on the book is 1963). WIth the help of Mr. Link, a former spy who is now an invalid, they are able to decode the message, and Link teaches them about a number of different codes. Alvin's and Shoie's characters are engaging, their adventures exciting, and, best of all from my point of view, the book has an appendix with a number of cryptological methods and messages for children to play with. These are wonderful brain-stretchers, and they have good practical applications even for children who don't particularly love numbers.

Such a loving and warm book By Ann Chavez These quoted thoughts are great and I really enjoyed reading them, especially the ones from Buddha, they are warm on a special way. Also, the exercises are very interesting. It seems that everything depends upon your thoughts and what you think and keep in mind, you follow that and open yourself. In this case the opposite side will recognize this.

3 of 3 people found the following review helpful. From the author of GOODNIGHT MOON By Cherise Kachelmuss This is a mix between a picture book and I Spy book. Each page features a simple sentence like "Find Little Bo Beep's lost sheep." or "Find the dish that ran away with the spoon." The pictures are beautifully illustrated and it is a perfect book to read at bedtime. My 4 year old looks forward to reading this book each night and has yet to tire of finding the same things. I started asking her to find other things from the pages and she is happy. This would make a great picture book for any child, especially fans of GOODNIGHT MOON as its the same author.I received this book to review in exchange for sharing my honest opinion.
