Narnia...the land beyond the wardrobe door, a secret place frozen in eternal winter, a magical country waiting to be set free.

Lucy is the first to find the secret of the wardrobe in the professor's mysterious old house. At first her brothers and sister don't believe her when she tells of her visit to the land of Narnia. But soon Edmund, then Peter and Susan step through the wardrobe themselves. In Narnia they find a country buried under the evil enchantment of the White Witch. When they meet the Lion Aslan, they realize they've been called to a great adventure and bravely join the battle to free Narnia from the Witch's sinister spell.

This was the first book written in The Chronicles of Narnia. It now stands as the second book in the series, preceded by The Magician's Nephew.

This is a hardcover with dustjacket and includes one color illustration of Aslan playing with Susan and Lucy. The first few pages are different but the story printing on each page coincides with the first edition. The reason I gave it only 3 stars is there are several pages in the story where the ink must have been running short on the printer because some of the words are difficult to make out. Also, the book boards are covered with paper not cloth and the pages are glued not sewn. The Chronicles of Narnia have such a huge following. I think I speak for all book fans of this series in saying I wish a publisher would get it right. Print the Chronicles of Narnia as they were originally published including cloth boards and sewn pages. A little quality in this product would be a huge seller.

Lewis and is therefor not the actual text. It is a well written summary of the story, which can be read aloud in one sitting to young children without losing their interest. The book introduces them to the classic tale in a way that is appropriate for them. The text goes very well with the illustrations, which are gorgeous. It is written in a way that keeps the children wanting to turn the pages to see what happens to the characters. While it's true that the message of the story is diluted, it would be easy for an adult familiar with the novel to add little bits of age appropriate explanation here and there so the children get more of the intended message if they wish to do so. I really like this book, and have used it with my preschool class (children of ages 3 1/5 to 4) and with kindergarteners (ages 5-6). At first I thought it was a little risky because the text is much longer than most picture books we use with the younger ones, and some of the children have really short attention spans. But I also felt the story was good enough and the illustrations interesting enough to keep their attention. I was right. The children listened intently and wanted to know everything about the story. It was beautiful to see how even children as young as 3 were enjoying the tale by C.S. Lewis in a circle time setting at school. I recommend this book to parents and teachers who love Narnia and want to introduce it to young children who are not quite ready to read the original text.

But I have to ask: When did the publisher resequence them? I can see that they are now in chronological order, but I find the original sequence more logical and compelling as a story. The original was 1. Lion, 2. Caspian, 3. Dawn Treader, 4. Silver Chair, 5. Horse/Boy, 6. Magician's Nephew, and 7. Last Battle. This puts the creation of Narnia within the context of the storyline. I can remember the epiphany of The Magician's Nephew the first time I read it in grade school. I felt like I was uncovering hidden secrets. I don't think it would stand alone as well. So, if you're planning to introduce these to your kids (and I hope you do!) consider the original sequence - I think you and your children will enjoy it more.

The answer gives us a wonderful insight into his character. I loved seeing things from his perspective and the glimpse of his life-long relationship with Aleta. I knew he was nothing at all like his father but after reading this, one of the things I'm looking forward to most in the series is Caden taking his throne. Is he book boyfriend material? Oh, yes!If you haven't read Threats of Sky and Sea, you won't be able to appreciate Defining Justice so don't start here. If you have, your anticipation of Riot later this month is about to go up a new notches.

The Orphan Army (The Nightsiders), by Jonathan Maberry

From School Library Journal Gr 5–8—Milo Silk is not a hero. This mantra of Milo's, repeated throughout much of this series opener, couldn't be further from the truth. In a slightly futuristic world, where ruthless insectlike monsters are exterminating humans and the Earth itself, Milo discovers secrets that change the tides of war in a serious way. The Nightsiders are a group of mystical beasts leading the fight to defend Earth and its inhabitants from the maleficent Bugs, led by the fantastic Evangelyne Winter. This story is told with all of the skill that Maberry brought to his "Rot & Ruin" series (S. & S.). Readers will instantly take to Milo, as well as Evangelyne and the other Nightsiders. The story flows well, and though it ends with a cliff-hanger, it is satisfying. Underlying themes center on conservation and bravery. VERDICT A must-have for fans of Maberry's previous books and middle grade sci-fi.—Chad Lane, Easton Elementary, Wye Mills, MD

Review “Hold on tight to this book because Jonathan Maberry’s Nightsiders: The Orphan Army will take you on a breathtaking sci-fi adventure that’s loaded with mystery, mayhem and imagination. There’s a surprise on every page and full throttle action from beginning to end. Best of all, this first volume is only the beginning!” (D.J. MacHale, New York Times bestselling author of Pendragon and The SYLO Chronicles)"Fast, frightful, and fantastic--a faery story like no other." (Dan Abnett, writer of the Guardians of the Galaxy comic for Marvel)"Maberry's prowess in fiction as well as comic books is evident in his well-crafted story, which balances over-the-top battle scenes with the quiet moments between characters that give substance to what could be a heartless thriller. This first book in an explosive new series is the perfect mix of science fiction and magic." (Kirkus, starred review)"This story is told with all of the skill that Maberry brought to his “Rot & Ruin” series...A must-have for fans of Maberry’s previous books and middle grade sci-fi." (School Library Journal)"Maberry skillfully blends postapocalyptic warfare with supernatural adventure, presenting memorable characters and a tense narrative...a strong start to what looks to be a highly entertaining story line." (Publishers Weekly)"In this fast-paced, compelling blend of old-school sci-fi, magic, environmental themes, and hero’s quest, Maberry introduces an everyday, likable protagonist who develops courage, confidence, and skills in a good-versus-evil battle...this Nightsiders series launcher will draw fantasy and sci-fi fans, who’ll anticipate the sequel." (Booklist)"The secret to becoming a hero is hidden between the pages of this unforgettable adventure.” (Kami Garcia, #1 New York Times bestselling co-author of Beautiful Creatures)"A sequel can’t come too soon for readers who will be eager to see what this unlikely team can accomplish." (BCCB)“It’s one thing to battle an invading army of high tech aliens, but it’s something quite different to do so in the swamps of Louisiana where the extraterrestrial bugs are not the strangest things in the woods. A tale of friendship, trust, and heroism, The Orphan Army is an electrifying thriller that builds to a climax as gripping as it is thoughtful and satisfying.” (A.J. Hartley, New York Times bestselling author of Darwen Arkwright and Steeplejack.)“Jonathan Maberry is a magician, a writer of great talent and versatility. From spooky fun to cinematic action to heartfelt character, he can do it all, and he does it with a sense of joy and enthusiasm that few writers can match!” (Christopher Golden, New York Times bestselling author of Snowblind and The Cemetery Girl)“The Nightsiders is heart-pounding action and a well-paced thriller from one of the masters of sci-fi and fantasy!” (Melissa De La Cruz, #1 bestselling author of The Isle of the Lost: A Descendants Novel)“You could use a lot of adjectives to describe Jonathan Maberry’s The Orphan Army. ‘Exciting,’ ‘surprising,’ ‘funny,’ ‘touching,’and ‘creepy’ all come to mind. But only one word sums up this barrier-breaking, multi-faceted book in its entirety: ‘fantastic.’” (Steve Hockensmith, author of Nick and Tesla’s High-Voltage Danger Lab and Pride and Prejudice and Zombies: Dawn of the Dreadfuls)“Jonathan Maberry is one of those rare writers who shows that he is comfortable in just about any genre, cranking out pulse pounding tales of Horror, Science Fiction, Action and Adventure. The Nightsiders will terrify, thrill and delight with the frantic turn of every page.” (Thomas E. Sniegoski, New York Times Bestselling author of The Fallen series and Bone: Stupid, Stupid Rat Tails)“Nightsiders is a thrilling mashup of sci-fi, adventure, and supernatural fantasy with a heart. In The Orphan Army, the action-packed first chapter of the saga, Maberry introduces us to a twilight world of magic and mayhem where nothing less than the survival of mankind is at stake and the most powerful weapon against a nightmare is a dream. Maberry is a master.” (Tonya Hurley, New York Times bestselling author of the ghostgirl series and The Blessed trilogy.)“Nightsiders is a smart, action-packed adventure, perfect for anyone who has ever wanted to fight alongside magical monsters against alien invaders. And really, who hasn't wanted to do that? I've never read anything like it, but I want more!” (Kendare Blake, author of Anna Dressed in Blood)"Jonathan Maberry is a master of fast, scary, and awesome. The Orphan Army will submerge you in its world, and you won't want to come up for air." (Adam Gidwitz, bestselling author of the Tale Dark and Grimm series and The Empire Strikes Back: So You Want To Be A Jedi?)“The Orphan Army makes me wish I was a kid again, settling down with this book and being taken off on a wild adventure.” (Charlie Higson, bestselling author of The Enemy Series and The Young Bond Series)“Move over, Percy Jackson. Using breakneck pacing and relentless action sequences, Jonathan Maberry has crafted a captivating and heady mix of science fiction and fantasy as eleven-year-old Milo fights the Bugs, aliens bent on exterminating humanity, and also discovers that magic and the supernatural still exist. Short chapters alternating with longer, exquisitely choreographed fight scenes will keep reluctant readers turning the pages. More mature middle-graders will appreciate quieter character moments that lend depth, richness, and real emotion to this story. Older teens and adults will appreciate references to sci-fi staples, from E.T. to Falling Skies. With nods to literary greats--Joseph Conrad and Tolkien get their due--nearly every reader will find something to enjoy here. The Orphan Army is dark, deft, and daring . . . I loved it.” (Ilsa J. Bick, best-selling author of The Ashes Trilogy and The Dark Passages Trilogy)“From the opening lines The Orphan Army grabs you and doesn’t let you go! Once again, Jonathan Maberry has created a stunning world of real people in extraordinary circumstances.” (Neal Shusterman, New York Times best-selling author of the Unwind Dystology)“The Nightsiders is an earthshaking adventure brimming with non-stop action and crawling with creepy insectoid villains. It’s impossible not to root for Milo Silk and his mysterious allies, a new generation of mythic creatures from the earth’s misty past, as they battle the voracious swarm. There’s plenty of magic, too: shape-shifting and illusions, sure, but also the powerful spells cast by friendship, bravery, and heroism.” (Michael Northrop, New York Times bestselling author of the Tombquest series)

Amazing book for the Middle School Set By Xina143 Jonathan Maberry is one of my favorite authors (his Pine Deep trilogy and Joe Ledger series are must reads as far as I am concerned!). In fact, my oldest son (21) is a fan of his, as is my 16 year old (he also writes Young Adult novels-Rot and Ruin Series), so when I saw this new series aimed at the Middle school set I jumped at the chance to introduce my 11 year old to such a fun and engaging writer.I will admit when the book came my 11 year old was a bit concerned at the size of the book-it clocks in at almost 400 pages-a daunting task for an active 11 year old, but he was game after he read the description of the book:Milo Silk has a hard time separating his dreams from reality, and this is why he keeps them locked away in his dream journal. He prays that his dreams never come true, but sadly they often do-like his father disappearing years ago. Recently, the Witch of the World has invaded his dreams and keeps telling him he is going to be a hero and save the world. Milo is scared until he discovers the Nightsiders-magical shadow creatures waging their own war on the Bugs that have invaded earth. My Son's take on this fantastical new book:"It was awesome! I love adventure books and it was just like you're in a game because of the big bugs and the other monsters. It was cool that it was dreams and reality with the witch of the world. So, good job and cant wait for part 2!"That's immensely high praise from an active young boy who'd rather be out playing basketball. The biggest clue that this was a winner for him was the fact that he didn't fight me when I told him it was time to do his daily reading. (He is supposed to read for at least 20 minutes a day, per his school requirement)I think Mr. Maberry has another fan in our house!

Looking forward to book two By ocmd My nine-year-old granddaughter is a big fan of long epic tales of fantasy, paranormal creatures, and all animals, including bugs. When she was a toddler, I bought her one of those bug-catching kits. It was a great hit. So, I was pretty sure she would enjoy Jonathan Maberry's new book about alien bug invaders. I was right. She especially liked the variety of different characters, and all the action and mystery they encountered in their post-apocalyptic world. Five Stars and looking forward to book two.

An enjoyable adventure story for middle grade boys By Sandy Kay At the start I need to say that I love the author's zombie books -- both the ones written for adults and the ones written for teens. I was prepared to like this book simply because I had high expectations of the author, even though I wondered if aliens would be as interesting as zombies.Personally, I still prefer zombies, but I quite enjoyed this book and it should really appeal to middle grade boys. (Girls are more likely to read books with boys as the main character so I think girls will like this as well, but this will definitely appeal to boys.) There is some introspection by Milo in the book, especially in the chapters that are his dream journal, but this is a real action-oriented book. The characters are generally out on scavenging runs, being chased by the aliens, and fighting back against the aliens. The aliens are suitably creepy, looking like giant bugs (hence the humans call them Bugs) but are technologically advanced and are in the process of destroying Earth. People have abandoned towns and cities and live in resistance pods out in the country (or out in the bayou as this book is set in Louisiana).Milo, the main character is 11 years old which makes him several years younger than Benny Imura from The Rot & Ruin Collection: Rot & Ruin; Dust & Decay; Flesh & Bone; Fire & Ash. The intended reader of this book is correspondingly a little younger than that series as well. The publisher indicates it is for ages 8-12 (grades 3-7). There is violence and death, especially associated with the attacks by the alien "Bugs" that have invaded Earth so parent should make sure their younger children who may be at advanced reading levels will be comfortable with that.In addition to Milo, the main characters include his best friend "Shark," a girl named Lizabeth in his resistance pod (not a strong female character in this book, she's more of the damsel in distress type), and Barnaby their teenage pod instructor. There is another set of characters, the Orphan Army of the Nightsiders. I don't want to say much about them because it will be a spoiler, but they are different.I'm looking forward to the next book in the trilogy to see what happens next.

By Inkspelled Faery In case the five or so glowy reviews before this had escaped your notice, I am a huge fan of Shreffler’s work. Her other series, The Cat’s Eye Chronicles, has a coveted seat upon my Shelf of Awesome and when I heard she was working on a book with DRAGONS I went a little spastic. This story manages a huge amount of world building, character building, and emotion in a very short space, something that impressed me greatly even with having read her other pieces. It is a fantastic story, even if it did end in a cliffhanger, and I am very much looking forward to watching the series unfold. The plot:Everything happens pretty quickly here, which was a nice change for me after a steady diet of epics lately. The plot progresses with only enough world building and description that is necessary (huge plus). My only question issue with this story was Sienna’s empathy toward the dragons. It’s explained, but I wanted to see just a little more expansion of the thought and feeling processes she went through before getting to that point. However, that was my one and only—I wouldn’t even call it a complaint. More like a side note.It is mentioned somewhere that this has romantic elements, but I would say the focus here was definitely more on the dragons. (And if you have a problem with that, go away.) The general feelings of the populace toward dragons were displayed and justified well in the beginning, but I still found myself sympathizing with the dragons more than the people (which was probably Shreffler’s scheme). The characters:This doesn’t happen especially often, but the heroine was my favorite character. In the beginning, Sienna is going through that whole awkward “on the threshold of adulthood but has no focus” stage that I think most of us go through. That won her huge doses of empathy and she was relatable and human to me, unlike a lot of fantasy heroines that have been cropping up.Darius, the dragon hunter, has that whole aura of mystery and awesome about him and I have lots of questions about his character. What did he do that got him made a dragon hunter? Who was he before? Like I said, lots of questions for sequels!Mistress Ash is probably the other main character and also the villain. Everything about her creeped me out from the moment she turned up and it became clear pretty quickly that I was right about here. She was an excellent villain to this story, written to make you hate her and as far as I was concerned, she could join the chopping block queue with Cerastes and Volcrian (references to The Cat’s Eye Chronicles). The other characters, mainly those from Sienna’s home castle, reacted in understandable ways, but…no, I’m not going to be rooting for them any time soon. On the other hand, I thought they were remarkably developed for such a short span of page time and even Sienna’s mother was portrayed as having sympathetic qualities. All in all, this was a well-written YA fantasy I would shove in the faces of anyone who likes dragon literature. I enjoyed it greatly, it has been a delight to read, and I am anxiously anticipating the next installment in the series!

The White (The Dragon Pearl Book 1) By Zephyr Book Reviews I went into this book on the cautious side, I'm already a pretty big fan of this author and I know that just because I liked her other works didn't mean I would like them all. Thank goodness it stuck to the fantasy genre that I loved the most so I had a extremely easy time enjoying myself and regretting that fact that it ended knowing its the first in the series and I'll have to wait quite a bit before I can continue the story.I was't really sure about Siennas character in the beginning, I really thought she was going to be one of those whinny characters for a bit. Thank goodness she wasn't and as the story progressed I found that she was really growing on me. She know her own faults and tried her hardest to work past them. There is also a couple of surprising things that happened that involved her that made everything more interesting and pulled me deeper into the story (sorry if that sounds vague, I try my hardest to give spoiler free reviews and don't want to give things away here.)I'm still not sure how I feel about Darius. I'm not sure if I like him or if I am still wary of him. I feel like he will end up surprise me big time. He is really intriguing to me though. I want to know more about him and his past. Mainly how he came to be what he is now.The plot itself seemed pretty simple at the get go but got more interesting as the story moved on. It stuck to its guns and you pretty much knew how things where going to go at one point but there was still things that would pop up to put you through a loop and keep you on your toes for a bit. There is a touch ,a small one, of romance as well. If you are like me and you like to have a little bit of romance dashed in I'm sure you will like how it was handled. There is none of the hated intsa-love here. Shreffler has a knack for being able to add this touch to her stories without it being overbearing and having it more at a nice pace. The world itself seemed very interesting. I would have liked to learn more about the different holds and how they were run. I also wanted to know more about the religion and how they were viewed and the deeper meanings. I can't forget the dragons either, there is some stuff told about them and the different kinds but I would have like to know more (I have a little soft spot for dragons). I can say I feel like this stuff will be explored more in the books to come and I could just be feeling greedy. There aren't any lose ends laying around, and it ends in a way that is satisfying but makes you want to come back to read the next one. All in all it was a good start to what I know is coming to become another great series.Would I recommend this book? Yes, if your a fan of fantasy I'm sure you will like this one.

Sienna is no wilting flower, she kicks butt and stands up for herself when no one else will. I was surprised how quickly she branched out at the beginning of the book; it was very refreshing. Schreffer is also not afraid to provide the harsh realities of life. I enjoyed that the writing didn't dance around the damage that The White created. She did a great job balancing the detail without it becoming too much (as Game of Thrones can often be!).My only complaint would the book felt like it was a little chopped at the end. There are clearly going to be subsequent books and I was left hanging. That is fine, I just wish there has been a little more of a real ending to tide me over until the next book. That being said I am certainly going to continue the series! This was one that had me glued to the book until the very end.Warning: contains violence.Who should read it? Adventure fans who are willing to start another series. Please note: I received a free copy of this book in exchange for an honest review courtesy of Enchanted Book Promotions.See all my reviews and more at www.ReadingToDistraction.com or @Read2Distract

Sad but true humorous look at being different while growing up with "norms." The pain that most people do not see! There is some happiness is pursuing their interests, but being different hurts! I keep reading in the hope that Tomoko-San will find peace!

One of the most beautiful children's books to come along in a very long time By Amazon Customer This is one of the most beautiful children's books to come along in a very long time -- artist Roberta Paul outdoes herself in this, her first foray outside of "high art" into book illustration. The book could become a classic for these illustrations alone -- large, full color, bursting with vitality, personality, and surprise -- but the wit of the text is every bit its match. Written in a gentle and rhythmic rhyme, the poetry of the story is charming and endearing and will appeal to the youngest readers in its musicality and to older readers in its sophistication. While one might think of another classic -- Eloise at The Plaza -- as inspiration for its setting in an upscale Boston hotel -- we are told that Henry and Lola is actually a true story. Perhaps best of all, the authors imply a continuing series. Let's hope so!

I bought this for my niece who was turning 2 and was worried that it might be to advanced for her, but she loves dogs and the illustrations look beautiful and colorful. I received it today and I think it will be perfect for her because of the lyrical rhymes of the text and the dog images on every page. But it would be equally great for a 3,4,5,6, or 7 year old too. It is fun to read because of the rhyming and the story is warm and sweet.

Explores how the ADHD gene is and has been critical to humanity’s development • Shows how artists, inventors, and innovators carry the gene necessary for the future survival of humanity • Explains why children with this gene are so often mislabeled in public schools as having a disorder • Offers concrete strategies for helping children reach their full potential In ADHD and the Edison Gene, Thom Hartmann shows that the creativity, impulsiveness, risk taking, distractibility, and novelty seeking that are characteristic of Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) are not signs of a disorder at all but instead are components of a highly adaptive skill set utilized by our hunting and gathering ancestors. These characteristics have been critical to the survival and development of our modern civilization and will be vital as humanity faces new challenges in the future. Hartmann, creator of the “hunter versus farmer” theory of ADHD, examines the differences in neurology between people with ADHD and those without, sharing recent discoveries that confirm the existence of an ADHD gene and the global catastrophe 40,000 years ago that triggered its development. He cites examples of significant innovators with ADHD traits, such as Ben Franklin and Thomas Edison, and argues that the children who possess the ADHD gene have neurology that is wired to give them brilliant success as artists, innovators, inventors, explorers, and entrepreneurs. Emphasizing the role that parents and teachers can play in harnessing the advantages of ADHD, he shares the story of how Edison was expelled from school for ADHD-related behavior and luckily his mother understood how to salvage his self-esteem and prepare him for a lifetime of success. Offering concrete strategies for nurturing, educating, and helping these children reach their full potential, Hartmann shows that rather than being “problems” such children are a vital gift to our society and the world.

ADHD and the Edison Gene: A Drug-Free Approach to Managing the Unique Qualities of Your Child, by Thom Hartmann

Review “Instead of pathologizing the differences we call ADHD, we need to value neurodiversity, and Thom’s book shows us in rich detail how and why this is true. Thom’s work can help protect children and adults from the devastating effects of being viewed through a pervasive pathological lens--a much more severe problem than ADHD could ever be!” (Sari Solden, M.S., L.M.F.T., psychotherapist and author of Women with Attention Deficit Disorder and)“Thom Hartmann has made one of the most important contributions to transforming our understanding of ADHD. Thom was the first to consider ADHD in an evolutionary context. He showed that ADHD has not only a significant survival advantage in hunter gatherer societies, but that it also confers powerful advantages in our contemporary civilization. Thom was one of the very first to comment on the link between ADHD and creativity. He will be recognized as a pioneer contributing to the reconceptualization of ADHD from being simply a ‘disorder’ to being viewed as a ‘mode of thought’ characterized by strengths, such as enhanced creativity.” (Richard Silberstein Ph.D., professor emeritus, Swinburne University of Technology)"From the marvelous mind, and lively pen of Thom Hartmann comes this new opportunity to celebratethe magnificent diversity of how we learn to thrive Read it... and start a new conversation with your kids." (Rabbi Hillel Zeitlin, Director, The Maryland Institute for Ericksonian Hypnosis & Psychotherapy)“The very gene associated with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) may have helped humans survive sudden climate changes before the end of the ice age. Thom Hartmann explains that children and adults with ADHD have characteristics such as risk-taking, distractibility, creativity and impulsiveness that are ideal for life paths that could well save us in the future. They're ideally suited to becoming entrepreneurs, explorers, inventors, innovators, emergency room physicians and fighter pilots. Drugs are not the answer; nor is the structured education system which has no room for "problem" children. Hartmann has strategies to help parents and teachers bring out the best in so-called hyperactive kids.” (Nexus, February 2016)“The very gene associated with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) may have helped humans survive sudden climate changes before the end of the ice age.…children and adults with ADHD have characteristics such as risk-taking, distractibility, creativity and impulsiveness that are ideal for life paths that could well save us in the future. They’re ideally suited to becoming entrepreneurs, explorers, inventors, innovators, ER physicians and fighter pilots. Hartman has strategies to help parents and teachers bring out the best in so-called hyperactive kids.” (Nexus Magazine, March 2016)“There is a lot of practical advice on how to interact and encourage ‘Edison Gene’ children; showing how to celebrate their skills rather than condemn their behavior. I found this book insightful, informative and inspirational. The message I took away from this book was: ‘child-hood’ is not a psychological disorder--stop drugging our kids.” (New Dawn, Sandy Brightman, March 2016)“Like Edison, Thom Hartmann is a visionary who uses history to illuminate the potential cost to society of shackling unique minds aching to soar. He questions the cultural imperative that compels us to label what is outside the bell curve as pathological rather than extraordinary. In this new edition, Hartmann urges us to nurture the fearlessly innovative child and celebrate their differences. Our futures will ultimately be shaped by those undaunted by the spectra of the impossible--because they have been taught to believe in their own self-worth.” (Ellen Littman, Ph.D., coauthor of Understanding Girls with ADHD)

About the Author Thom Hartmann is a progressive nationally and internationally syndicated talkshow host and an award-winning New York Times bestselling author of 24 books, including Attention Deficit Disorder: A Different Perception and The Last Hours of Ancient Sunlight, which inspired Leonardo DiCaprio’s film The 11th Hour. A former psychotherapist and founder of the Hunter School, a residential and day school for children with ADHD, he lives in Washington, D.C.

His mother’s reaction was immediate. She grabbed the pineapple from the cart and put it back on the shelf, then turned and glared at her son. “Don’t be a bad boy!” she commanded, wagging her finger in his face. His reaction looked to me like a mixture of pain and pride; the former from mother being unhappy with him, and the latter from some inner knowledge of identity, confirmed by her words. He reached into the cart and grabbed a can of soup, glancing at me, his audience, and prepared to throw it on the floor. Mom intervened by roughly grabbing the can and again demanding that he not be bad, this time giving him a slap on the hand. I found my cookies and moved away as the little boy began looking for a new audience for his behavior. Whenever we react to a person’s behavior--particularly a child’s--we can do it in either of two primary ways. One addresses the individual’s personhood and ties it to his behavior, and the other addresses his personhood and disconnects it from his behavior. This is a critical distinction. People who think they are their behaviors are caught in a continuous loop: in order to define themselves or to feel okay about themselves, they must continually bounce their behaviors off other people. Most people who start with this as children also become early and vulnerable targets for the advertising industry, whose primary message is that you are your possessions or that you are your body. In each parent/child interactive situation in which the child is defined by his behavior, the “I am” center of his personhood becomes disconnected from any state of inner centeredness. Happiness and selfassurance come only with doing or getting and have no relationship to simply being, to “I know who I am, and I’m larger and deeper than what I do or what I own or what my body looks like.” The lack of this important self-knowledge begins with parents or the media telling children that they are their behaviors. Thus the alternative to saying, “Don’t be a bad boy,” is to say, “If you do that, we won’t be able to continue shopping.” For a more severe behavior, it may even be, “I love you so much that I’m not going to let you do that.” It brings the core of the interaction back to the community of parent/child and doesn’t speak at all about the child as a bad or good person. Break the Pattern with a Positive Message The child in the supermarket also reminded me of one of the best lessons in childrearing that Louise and I ever learned. A friend of ours, an NLP (Neurolinguistic Programming) practitioner and psychologist, shared it with Louise back in the early 1980s. One of our children was in the habit of throwing fits in the supermarket, demanding things and shouting loudly when the demands weren’t met. We’d tried both placating and punishing, and neither worked; the behavior just continued. Our friend had a two-part suggestion. “Do something unexpected,” he said, “and do it in a way that reinforces both your love and the idea that life can be fun.” We started by priming our child during the day, talking about how much fun Louise was going to have shopping in the afternoon. “Would you like to have fun with me at the store?” she asked our four-year-old. “Yes!” was the enthusiastic reply. When they got to the store and were going through the aisles, our child began to throw the predictable fit in the predictable place. At that point, Louise had a shopping cart only half full of food. “Oh,” she said, “I thought you wanted to have fun with me here. But if it’s not fun for both of us, it doesn’t work, and it’s not fun for me if you’re throwing this fit.” She propelled the cart--complete with demanding child--to the service counter in the supermarket, where she said to the startled clerk, “I came to the supermarket to have fun shopping with my child, but my child doesn’t want us both to have fun, so I’m going to leave these groceries here, drop my child off at home, and come back alone to finish having fun shopping.” “Okay,” said the clerk, nodding the way people do to the inmates in an asylum. Louise picked up our child from the cart, drove the two of them home, came into the house, and said to me, “Our child wasn’t willing to let us both have fun at the supermarket, so will you baby-sit while I go back to the store to have fun shopping?” “Of course,” I said, watching our child’s astonished expression. “I hope you have a lot of fun!” “I will,” Louise said cheerfully as she went out the door. It was the last supermarket fit we ever experienced, and the story highlights one aspect of how many hunter-gatherer tribal children are raised: interactions are cooperative and positive, even as the adults clearly define the parameters of behavior and the values that underlie those parameters.

By mystysue A BOOK FOR THOSE OF US WHO WERE LATE BLOOMERS AND USUALLY ENDED UP WITH MORE LEMONS THAN CHERRIES IN THE DATING GAME. THIS BOOK IS A FEARLESS ACCOUNT OF ONE YOUNG WOMANS HAPLESS ENCOUNTERS WITH THE OPPOSITE SEX. SOME MADE ME LAUGH AND SOME MADE ME CRINGE MOST LIKELY BECAUSE THEY SPARKED MEMORIES OF MY OWN BAD DATES.

By John Fahey This memoir of a woman and her adventures with the many men in her life is an entertaining story. Once I started reading I was drawn in until I reached the end. Throughout the book I felt I was reading a very existential sort of story, men and women living for the moment, hanging out, drugs and alcohol and sex permeating their lives. There were sections where I laughed out loud, reading of a shrimp on a leash, keeping toads as pets, being fond of tarantulas. There were sections that were more serious, arousing the big brother protectiveness in me, aching that she had so many grim experiences like the story of Zeus and Lenny and the pimp. There are so many memories and people she writes about that surely the author kept writing about her life over the years and it brings a realistic and vivid picture to me. There is an message here for many men on how not to treat a woman. To me at least there is another message for parents who have just had a baby to think about life ahead for their child; to realise a sister needs a brother, a brother needs a sister. I can't even imagine what my life would have been like without my sister to confide in, to turn to when life would seem so impossible and other people so incomprehensible. The author is to be congratulated on so clearly pointing out many men are complete idiots, having no respect for women in their lives, living a pointless life. The author's appreciation of the simple things in life like flowers, and nature, stars in the sky, tackling repair jobs without help must heve been what saved her from despair. She has dealt with life optimistically and with humor. I've given this book five stars because it opened a window for me, given me reflection that in some ways I was fortunate to have been born in an earlier time and a different place, in a different culture. This memoir is welll worth reading.

It's tactfully written and not too explicit, but you come to understand that she had varied sexual encounters from an early age to later in life. Some were enjoyable, others not, but all memorable. She has an amazing ability to find some good in all her experiences. I would have liked a few more details of her relationships and things she liked, and didn't like, about her sexual awakenings.

One clue… what does it mean? Ken, the leader of the Blue Men of the Minch, has kidnapped Evan. Before they left, Evan was able to leave a package for Meara—her grandfather's necklace wrapped in a cloth napkin with one word written in blood. Azuria. Unfortunately, Meara doesn't understand it and neither does her dad or Kieran. When Dad and Aunt Brigid attempt to rescue Evan, Meara and Kieran begin to train the clan on how to fight and defend their home. A war is brewing, and Meara is determined their people must prepare for the battle. The training sessions are long and arduous, but the Selkies work hard to learn. Meanwhile, Evan wakes and finds himself in Belle Tresor, the home of sirens. He's bound to his blue form, unable to transform to human, and Ken has plans to use Evan's powers to destroy the Selkies. Thankfully, he's not alone. He befriends a siren named Deanna and several Blue Men. Can he trust them to help him escape or do they have ulterior motives? As both sides prepare for an ultimate confrontation, the stakes are high and friendships are tested. Some will rise to be victorious. Some will be destroyed. But love and loyalty will be always remembered in this exciting conclusion to the Never Forgotten series.

Review FROM MANHATTAN BOOK REVIEW, 5 STARSThe two arcs have been written brilliantly, especially the style with which each clan's history has been developed shows the talent behind the pen. Excellent novel for all age groups.FROM IND'TALE MAGAZINE, 4.5 STARS, CROWNED HEARTA thought-provoking story that is difficult to put down once started.REVIEW "If I am to describe this book in one sentence, it would be: A perfect series ender." - Nerdy Champagne Blog"I strongly recommend Always Remembered as it successfully takes up where Current Impressions left off and makes up the ideal ending of a story that I have read, felt and that I will never forget." - Boundless Daydreamer Blog "Make sure that you add this entire series to your MUST read list." - The Voluptuous Book Diva Blog

From the Author Always Remembered is my personal favorite in this series. I love how my characters have grown, how they face their challenges, and how it ends. No cliffhangers in this one, I promise! I hope the ending gives you all kinds of warm feels, and you enjoy reading it as much as I enjoyed writing it.

About the Author Kelly Risser knew at a young age what she wanted to be when she grew up. Unfortunately, Fairytale Princess was not a lucrative career. Leaving the castle and wand behind, she entered the world of creative business writing where she worked in advertising, marketing, and currently, eLearning instructional design. An avid reader, one of Kelly's favorite pastimes is discussing books. When she's not immersed in the middle of someone else's fantasy world, she's busy creating one of her own. Always Remembered is the third book in the Never Forgotten series.

Well I can't wait to read more from one of my favorite authors. Kelly Risser doesn't dissapoint in this final instalment of her Never Forgotten series. I will not spoil the story for you, but for me this had the perfect ending. If you haven't read the first two books I would suggest that you stop reading right here. When I first met Meara Quinn I really had no idea of how involved I would become in her life. I laughed, cried, hoped and felt every let down. After meeting a great guy, losing her mom, finding out that her father is a great ruler of a selkie clan we come to the end of this journey and the final battle between the selkies and their enemies The Blue Men. I suggest that while you read this final instalment you remember to breathe. It was hard to say goodbye to the world of the selkies, but I have hopes that someday Kelly will revisit Meara and her family to let us know how our old friends are doing.Kelly, I just want to say thank you for the best adventure I've been on in a long time.

I made no guarantee of a favorable review.I loved this final installment of the Never Forgotten series. The book picks up where the last one left off. This beautiful and well detailed story will leave you in its grip as the surprises just keep coming and we find ourselves dealing with many emotional moments throughout this book.. The relationship between Meara and Kieran continues to deepen and Evan learns the truth about himself. Kelly Risser did an amazing job in creating and weaving this mystical series and you will not be disappointed with how this story ends. Please note that all three books in the series must be read in order. Make sure that you add this entire series to your MUST read list and I look forward to reading more by this very creative author.

This series truly has it all, and features selkies, mermen, and sirens, a genre that isn't currently very popular. This is a wonderfully unique and creative series and a must read for fans of this genre. The second novel in this series, Current Impressions, set this book up perfectly. As soon as I was finished reading the second book, I knew this was going to be chock full of action, and plenty of twists and turns. Ms. Risser delivers in the best way, and serves up a conclusion that will satisfy all fans of this series. Her writing is perfect and the story flows effortlessly. This novel is well paced and the perfect length. One of my favorite elements of this story was the different settings in which the story took place. For about half of the story we alternate between Ronac and Belle Tresor (the home of the sirens). We also visit Azuria (but I'm not going to tell you much about that because I don't want to give away any spoilers). While these places were talked about before or described before, this novel makes these places come alive. You felt that you were living in these places as they are richly described. While we already knew about Ronac previously, I felt that we got a much better feel for the community and safehold. Put simply, Ms. Risser's writing created a wonderful atmosphere and experience for the reader, and allowed the reader to live in the moment when reading about these places.Another excellent element of this story was the development of the characters. Throughout the course of the series--and this book in particular-- Meara grows enormously. She is more determined than ever and (at least in my mind) much more responsible. Meara has finally accepted her position in her family and realized that she needed to step up to the plate to help her clan and people. She has a wonderful tenacity and fierceness that serves to further her plans and mission. However, the best thing about her character is that she always remains optimistic. No matter what troubles or set backs come her way, she always stays positive. Evan also matures quite a bit, and I did like how he stuck true to his character. Kieran is amazing and I loved how much he supported Meara. He remained her partner and believed in her, even if the face of danger or trouble. There is a great wrap-up that brings the story to a nice conclusion. Overall, this is a fantastic series that definitely deserves more attention. With Ms. Risser's wonderfully creative and descriptive writing, as well as characters that you will quickly and easily fall in love with, this series is a major win. Don't miss out!Happy reading :)
