Review "Psychic" is written in a down-to-earth and honest way. Another triumph in spiritual literature for Scott Russell Hill. -- Radio 2UE, Sydney, May 10, 1997A great read! -- Good Morning Australia, Channel 10, MelbourneBreathtaking Sequel -- HOBART MERCURY November 16, 1997Fascinating and believable -- Monday to Friday, Channel 10, SydneyPSYCHIC TO THE STARS Hollywood Pursues Best Selling Author Scott Russell Hill -- NEW IDEA May 24, 1997

From the Publisher "Psychic" was one of our biggest moving titles of 1997. Scott's much anticipated sequel to "Caught Between Two Worlds" was also to become a best seller.

He embarked on a huge national tour with "Psychic" and was interviewed on all the major television and radio programs around Australia, and had articles featured in national magazines and newspapers.

From the Author While "Caught Between Two Worlds" saw me as the spiritual student, (age 7 - 28) "Psychic" sees me transform into the spiritual teacher and covers my spiritual journey from age 28 - 35.

Yes, "Psychic" picks up where "Caught" left off, and is written in the same easy to read style. It features more UFO phenomena than "Caught" and like its predecessor, ends on a cliff hanger. Could there be another sequel? Yes..."Truth and Lies Of The New Age".

In fact, after I read his first book, I ordered "Psychic" and was looking forward to reading it. It is an unusual story (albeit true) of a guy (Scott) trudging through life, and all the while he is psychic. The oddness of this story is that he doesn't seem to think that that is so unusual, and so his attitude is a little too blase' for my taste. He sees ghosts and UFOs on a regular basis, which to anyone is a little out there!! Somehow, he gets away with it, being so nonchalant, and seeming to think that everyone else does this too. Hmmmmm. No, not everyone is as psychic as you are, Scott, but more power to you anyway!! There is some UFO action in this story also, but he makes it believable somehow with his care-free, no big deal demeanor. So, is this a true story? He thinks it is, and I'm not sure he isn't telling the truth. Bottom line..........yes, buy the book. I enjoyed it and you might too. For some reason, it seems to hook you the minute you open the front cover, if only to see what the hell he's up to now. Oh yes, and two more things.....he needs to find a lady friend who can settle him down, and he needs to stay at home instead of chasing old loser friends. Smiling more would be good too.

He takes away the spookiness and shares with us what is natural to him. Having met the author, he is exactly what he is in his writing. A lovely read and can recommend d it.

From School Library Journal Gr 4–8—Witty, informative, and entertaining, this collection of Norse myths will satisfy the storyteller at heart, whether read aloud or silently. The stories are compiled in an attractive, oversize volume. Pages feature intricate borders and larger-than-life characters. At first glance, this title looks similar to other juvenile nonfiction compilations, and readers flipping through quickly may not be especially wowed by the design. However, these attractive and evocative illustrations actively work to support the text. The characters—gods and giants, tricksters and warriors—inhabit a dramatic world of life and death. Napoli reveals how geography, climate, language, and culture influenced the stories. Though the author occasionally comments on characters' selfish ruthlessness ("Loki, oh, Loki, Loki, Loki—he just couldn't keep himself from wicked deeds."), the gods are larger-than-life and are not blunted to conform to modern sensibilities. The afterword is of note, as Napoli reveals the various inconsistencies in Norse mythology and her decision-making process. Readers will come away from this work with a greater understanding of the topic. VERDICT Buy it, and if space is an issue, weed to make it fit.—Nancy Call, Santa Cruz Public Libraries, Aptos, CA

With nods to classic fantasy expertly woven into this surprising and emotionally-charged journey through the ups and downs of middle school, Megan Frazer Blakemore proves that even the bravest heroes need true friends by their side.Ruth Mudd-O'Flaherty has been a lone wolf at her new middle school ever since her best friend, Charlotte, ditched her for "cooler" friends. Who needs friends when you have fantasy novels? Roaming the stacks of her town's library is enough for Ruth. Until she finds a note in an old book...and in that note is a riddle, one that Ruth can't solve alone. With a tantalizing set of clues before her, Ruth must admit she needs help, the kind that usually comes from friends. Lena and Coco, two kids in her class could be an option, but allowing them in will require courage, and Ruth must decide: Is embarking on this quest worth opening herself up again?

The Friendship Riddle, by Megan Frazer Blakemore

From School Library Journal Gr 4–8—Ruth Mudd-O'Flaherty has two mothers and Charlotte has two dads. This similarity brought their families together and Ruth and Charlotte have been best friends ever since. But middle school has created some challenges in their relationship. Charlotte is now more interested in being friends with cool Melinda, the mean girl, than Ruth. Feeling alone, Ruth finds comfort in her local library where she volunteers. She discovers hidden notes with intriguing riddles and begins her quest to find the answer to these mysterious clues. She soon realizes that she can't do this alone and will need the help of others. She must consider opening her mind and heart to some of the clever characters who surround her. The novel spotlights numerous middle school worries including bras, boy-girl parties, and getting your period for the first time. Ruth is a smart, spunky character whose quest for friendship feels authentic. VERDICT A must-have selection for middle school mystery lovers.—Helen Foster James, University of California at San Diego

9 of 10 people found the following review helpful. Entertaining and insightful By K. Sullivan Ruth likes to think of herself as a lone wolf. Her former best friend, Charlotte, abandoned her for a more popular group of friends when they got to middle school. Who needs friends anyway? Her favorite fictional character, the half-human half-elf Taryn Greenbottom, doesn’t, does she? Of course, Ruth’s mothers may disagree. While in the library, Ruth finds a riddle tucked away in a book. It promises to lead to more clues. She finds herself faced with a quest not unlike her favorite fantasy heroine. If only she and Charlotte were still friends, they could conquer the puzzle together. Maybe this quest could be the spark to bring them back together. Or perhaps Ruth will need to open herself up to some new friends.Megan Frazer Blakemore deftly juggles three plotlines in “The Friendship Riddle.” There’s the personal struggle of friendship – growing apart, meeting new people, opening oneself up to trust others. There’s the quest with its twists and turns of seeking out clues and solving riddles. Finally, there’s the middle school spelling bee in which Ruth wants to participate (a cute touch is that the chapter titles are like sample spelling bee words). Each of the plotlines ties in nicely and proceeds at a quick pace.Ruth is a charming protagonist. In many ways, she’s something of a stock character. That’s not to say she isn’t well developed, but she possesses the qualities one has come to expect in such literature. She’s witty and precocious, preternaturally intelligent and stoic for her age. But she’s quite enjoyable and remains relatable. There’s also some complexity. Maybe she’s not just a hapless victim abandoned by her friend. Maybe her controlling personality contributed to the break up. In any event, the novel is told entirely from her perspective, and she’s a fun companion for the journey. Because she’s so unusually mature and intelligent, her lack of perception and failure to act in a couple scenarios leads to a feeling that some of the tension is contrived.Assuming that “The Friendship Riddle” is a stand-alone novel, it was surprising that the ending wasn’t as tidy as might be expected. While most things are resolved, a few questions remain.Less mature readers might be troubled or embarrassed by a subplot involving the girl’s locker room and adolescent development or lack thereof. Our hero confronts the situation and its fall out with all the aplomb one would expect from someone so mature. Although the section was relatively small, there was a frankness that was refreshing on the one hand but curious on the other. One wonders how young readers might react, particularly in mixed company.Overall, “The Friendship Riddle” was quite fun. It’s a quick read featuring valuable lessons and an endearing protagonist. The supporting cast is also quite colorful.

Ruth has a mom and a mum(homosexual marriage). Her friend Charlotte has two daddies. I'm sure this will be thrilling to many, with this form of diversity. Ruth does mention her "sperm donor dad", though, and the fact that he "put down opera as an interest". (page 37-ARC) Depending on the age/maturity of your child, you might want to be prepared for questions if your child reads this book.

11 of 14 people found the following review helpful. ... and The Spy Catchers at Maple Hill have been recommended to others By theShepherdz We have been huge fans of Megan Blakemore's books in our house - The Water Castle and The Spy Catchers at Maple Hill have been recommended to others. While The Friendship Riddle looks to have the same mystery and intrigue that any young reader of Nancy Drew will love, my caution is that parents read this book before handing it off to their child. I found that some background statements and comments were beyond what I would want my 3rd / 4th / 5th grader reading (which is the low end of the recommended age for this book). These are things that might be passed over without a second thought, but it might be something you are not ready to introduce to your child at that specific age (i.e., a comment about the main characters "sperm-donor dad" pops instantly to mind).

Penelope Petunia, a young forest elephant in the Central African Republic, tells the story of her life in a forest clearing at the Dzanga-Ndoki national park, her species' fight for survival and what children can do to help save elephants. Fifth graders at the P.S. 107 John W. Kimball Learning Center, an elementary school in Park Slope, Brooklyn, wrote and illustrated this moving story with a foreword by Dr. Jane Goodall. The year-long project was a collaboration between the P.S. 107 Beast Relief committee, wildlife conservationist Andrea Turkalo and the Wildlife Conservation Society (WCS). All proceeds from the book will go directly to the WCS fund to support Dr. Turkalo's research at the Dzanga-Ndoki park, where she continues to observe and help protect Penelope Petunia and her extended family.

Unforgettable Children's Book about a Forest Elephant, Penelope By KEF This is one of the most charming -- and poignant -- children's books I have yet to read. With its wonderful illustrations and beautiful photographs, it will delight children, while educating them about the wonders of forest elephants. By Mo A beautiful, heartfelt story written from the perspective of a baby forest elephant, Penelope Petunia. My kids are excited by the fact that the illustrations were drawn by kids like them, and they have fallen in love with Penelope. The captivating photographs and thought-provoking story provide a window into the world and plight of forest elephants. It's a book to be cherished and shared!

By HDM This wonderful book is written by and for elementary school age children though older children and adults alike will enjoy the tale of Penelope and her family. It is a beautiful book to begin the conversation about animal conservation and appreciation. A worthy companion to 'One Special Rhino', also by the students of PS107!

It is the turn of the 16th Century, and the world has entered a golden age of art, invention, and architecture. This renaissance of literature and learning in Europa is suddenly thrown into overdrive when a chosen few “Stormtouched” begin displaying supernatural abilities. Torn between the age’s burgeoning love of science and the dark promises of magic, Europa has become a powder-keg of clockwork and sorcery. Elena Lucciano doesn't care about increasing mankind’s knowledge or exploring the mysterious workings of magic. Even though she herself is Stormtouched, Elena doesn't have high ambitions. All she wants is for her mother to be proud of her, for her teacher to accept her, and to become one of the best artists in all of Italoza, content to ignore all thoughts of science and magic. Unfortunately for Elena, the tides of invention and magic are sometimes not content to ignore those who ignore them…

7 of 8 people found the following review helpful. Yes. Read this. By little sparrow I read a LOT of YA lit, as I have a houseful of young readers and I like to have quality stuff to recommend. Not sure if this author intended this to be a YA read, but I think this has a range of readership that extends there. The magical/alternate universe fictional world seems to be awfully full lately of the following template: Misunderstood and bullied youth is made aware of giftedness. In finding their tribe, realization is that OHmygosh, there has never ever since the fabled days of _______ been such a gifted ______, the existing gifted world can't believe it, fight the Big Boss over the six book series because gifted newbie is the only one who possibly can win. The world is filled with authors who read Harry Potter and decided the formula would fill their bank account as well. This is not that. The author created a magical world that avoids the trope. Setting is rich in detail, mood reminds me somewhat of the Crestomanci series by Dianna Wynne Jones. Protagonist has grown up knowing about the gift, as have others. There is the right balance of reader being kept in the dark about what is really going on without that irritating prop of the absolutely clueless/stupid main character that makes me feel like flinging a book across the room. Definitely not recommended with the Kindle version ;-). None of that here. The world created hangs together and is appealing.Just a good absorbing way to pass an afternoon, and I'm definitely buying the sequel - oooooh, another plus for this author, as this book would've been a satisfying read as a stand-alone but I also care enough about the characters to want to see what is around the bend. Not to sound all cranky, but I've read too many Kindle books of late that are NOT stand-alones and we don't see story arcs resolved even over a couple of books. Irritating. Feels like a scam. While "Twisted Cogs" does definitely end with more ahead, it resolves the plotlines and is a rich read in itself.

6 of 7 people found the following review helpful. the author has also lovingly and beautifully fleshed out a world By Summer Twisted Cogs is an original fantasy where magic gets expressed through art. The author has managed to create a world fill with both likeable, and unlikeable characters. None of them are one-dimensional and for that alone I would rate Twisted Cogs highly. However, the author has also lovingly and beautifully fleshed out a world. I can't wait for the next installment.

Most of the time, the issues I came across would have had me moving on, but the story held my interest. Secondly, the side characters are interesting. Their personalities are defined, and there is depth there. The world while underdeveloped, still showed originality. The biggest issue for me in this story was the MC. She was an absolute doormat. While there were reasons why she had this personality, it didn't make her any less annoying. Also, the author's transitions need work. It seemed like anytime there was a plot twist, it either came from nowhere, or it was obvious. The mild romantic interest seemed forced, and bland. Also, the author made a point early on to describe the atmosphere of the setting as a dog-eat-dog, can't trust anyone, type of situation. Yet almost immediately, the MC made friends with most everyone, and as a reader, I kept waiting for the other shoe to drop. It never happened, and I never fully invested in the relationships because of it. The last thing is that towards the end, there is a flashback scene. You don't know it is a flashback scene until the end of it. It leaves you completely confused by what is happening while you are reading it.On paper, I shouldn't have like this book, but for some reason I did. Plan on giving the second book a shot.

At age three, Oprah began performing in churches, becoming known to adoring crowds as the Little Speaker. When she was asked what she wanted to be when she grew up, she answered, "I want to be paid to talk." Here is the story of Oprah Winfrey’s childhood, a story about a little girl on a Mississippi pig farm who grew up to be the "Queen of Talk." The host of the Emmy Award–winning Oprah Winfrey Show , she currently directs a media empire that includes television and movie productions, magazines, a book club, and radio shows. An author’s note is included.

Oprah: The Little Speaker, by Carole Boston Weatherford

From School Library Journal Grade 2–4—For the first six years of her life, Oprah Winfrey lived with her strict but caring grandmother on a humble farm in Mississippi. Even as a small child, she performed in public by reciting and reading Bible verses in church. This picture book only deals with that part of the celebrity's life, showing the importance of her grandmother in Winfrey's childhood. On each spread Weatherford presents a short, lyrical paragraph about the child, then adds a single italicized sentence of religious commentary like, "God had shone a light on her." The choice of language and the extra commentary suggest the rhythms of speech and the religious culture that surrounded Winfrey as she grew up in the mid-20th-century South. Weatherford's text is similar in style to her writing in Moses: When Harriet Tubman Led Her People to Freedom (Hyperion, 2006). Unfortunately, this book is not as beautifully illustrated as that book. Ladd's painterly oils are well executed and do a good job of depicting the setting and time period but lack the emotional force found in Moses. Oprah fans will enjoy this book because it gives insight into the formation of her character, but for others it is a secondary purchase.—Donna Cardon, Provo City Library, UT (c) Copyright 2010. From Booklist Oprah: a one-word name that’s a magnet for worldwide attention. Although young biographies exist about this phenomenal woman, this picture-book account focuses solely on her childhood. An author’s note at the beginning sets the stage for the true rags-to-riches story about a poor girl on a Mississippi pig farm who became an entertainer, entrepreneur, and philanthropist. Her grandmother, Hattie Mae, was the driving force in Oprah’s childhood, teaching her to read, write, and learn scripture at an early age. Oprah’s first public speaking was in church, and she was so good that adults called her the “Little Speaker.” The narrative portrays a bright, spunky child who didn’t let poverty or ridicule stand in her way, while the soft-edged, acrylic illustrations paint a determined, sober-faced girl. The book ends with Hattie Mae boiling laundry and calling to Oprah: “‘Come watch, child; you’ll need to know how to do this someday.’ And Oprah said to herself, ‘No I won’t.’” Even with the obvious message and religious asides, this is sure to be popular. Grades 1-3. --Julie Cummins

5 of 5 people found the following review helpful. This was a beautiful portrait of a young, determined little girl whose destiny was held in the heart of the Lord! By Deb A little girl with pigtails sat pensively on a fence with her little brown toes on the bottom rung. Her "Mama" was really her grandmother, Hattie Mae, because her real mother was a maid and her "Daddy was a soldier passing through." She was a Mississippi girl and there wasn't much for her in a ramshackle place, but Mama gave her a lot of love and guidance. There were lots of chores for her to do including cleaning out the slop jar because there was no indoor plumbing. A little farm girl had lots of things to do, including holding out her hand with grains of corn so they would drop to the ground and the chickens could peck at them. "God only knew what would become of that child," a little girl named Oprah.Church on Sunday was an all day affair because He was important to Hattie Mae, a woman who "leaned on the Lord." The Bible was her book and Oprah learned to read from it at an early age. She was a precocious little girl and even began speaking in church. Some called her gifted, but she was bullied by the other children who called her "Miss Jesus or the Preacher." It wasn't easy for a little "chatterbox," but Oprah had her gifts and Hattie Mae. What would become of this little dreamer? Was there something or someone special waiting for her in life? This was a beautiful portrait of a young, determined little girl whose destiny was held in the heart of the Lord. I loved the gentle way that Oprah was portrayed in this story. The overwhelming feeling I walked away with was the special love that she shared with Hattie Mae and a special friend. The artwork was bold and sweeping. The brush strokes caught the expressions of everyone quite nicely, especially the hatred and disdain of the children who bullied her. If you are a fan of Oprah Winfrey's or, like me, just want to read about a special little speaker, you might want to add this one to your list!

The book begins with an author's note, where Oprah's life accomplishments are highlighted. The focus of the book is on a small window of Oprah's childhood that provided the foundation for whom she became. In addition, the personality traits that made her the "Queen of Talk" are also discussed. As an Christian, I can see this book being used to show the importance of faith in a person's life. As a Gifted Specialist, I can see this book as an introduction to the research of a gifted and talented personality. Working in a school where about half the students come from low socio-economic background, I believe it is important for them to read about role models with similar backgrounds. Oprah is definitely one. I highly recommend this book.

Like Oprah By KO I got this book as I like Oprah (most of the time) and I assume that even though my daughter isn't 1 that as she gets older that she will know who Oprah is as well. I found this story to be sweet and loved the pictures. The main reason is that Oprah is a strong female and I want my little one to grow up to be her own woman, just like Oprah did. I would read this to my daughter now even though she's not at the recommended age, it's still good to read to your little one!

3 of 3 people found the following review helpful. A Top 5 Hulk Story By Gregory Cox This volume contains two now classic Hulk stories, both by Peter David. Hulk: Future Imperfect and Hulk: The End. The first one is, plain and simple, one of the greatest Incredible Hulk stories ever written in my humble opinion. Right up there with Planet Hulk, by Greg Pak. It really is the perfect combination of two great talents, Peter David on the writing side and George Perez fueling the artwork. You really couldn't ask for a better story, and there are some panels that could take your breath away. By now, in 2015, the whole dystopian, evil, alternate, future self in comics has been done to death, for pretty much everyone, but that being said it doesn't lessen the impact of this story. The story in question features the Hulk, the incarnation known as the "Professor" that appeared during David's run, (Which is said to be a perfect combination between the three personalities; the Grey and Savage Hulks, plus Bruce Banner) being transported one hundred years into the future, where the evil Maestro rules with an iron clad, emerald hand. As the cover of the volume should tell you, the Maestro is really the Hulk one hundred years into the future, ruling as a dictator. The majority of humanity and all other superpowered beings were wiped out a century prior by nuclear bombs. Of course, nuclear fallout would reak havoc on the world and everything on it, except the Hulk, who only grew stronger. This allowed him to easily take over and craft a world of his choosing. Both David and Perez pull their share of the weight in creating this future world, with the dialogue adding just as much as the art does. Furthermore, Hulk is finally pitted against someone who he can't just beat down while yelling "Hulk is strongest there is!" Because the Maestro is the Hulk, but is also stronger than the Hulk. He therefore knocks his younger self around like a ragdoll when they meet. This really leads to a satisfying conclusion, as Maestroy is defeated not through an act of strength, but through an act of cunning. And even then, he himself outsmarts and predicts the actions of the younger Hulk many times before this. And both tie back into the whole "Professor" Hulk that David created, which is a being with incredible strength, but also the genius of Bruce Banner, perhaps creating one of the most perfect lifeforms imaginable. This story comes with my highest recommendation, especially when there's another solid story to be read right after it.Hulk The End is a part of Marvel's "The End" line of comics, where they create a story about a hero or group of heroes, set in the future and showing a possible "End" or conclusion to the character's history. Fantastic 4 got one, Spider-Girl got one, the X-Men got one, Wolverine got one, etc. For anyone interested, I can personally say that i've checked out the Wolverine and X-Men minis for this line and both are decent. What you need to understand is that many concepts within the works may clash with or outright contradict later developments in the characters histories, but just keep in mind that many elements that existed to certain characters (Wolverine especially) didn't exist at the time these stories were written. Check them out though if you ever find the time.Back to the Hulk however, his personal "End' features him as the last surviving being on Earth after a , you guessed it, nuclear war. Actually a series of wars from the way Bruce Banner describes it. The only other living things are an endless number of mutated roaches. This is a very somber and thought driven story. There is very little in the way of physical conflict. This makes sense as there's really no one else for Hulk to fight, save the roaches, which we only see once. It's short, bitter, yet realistic. It gives one possible interpretation of the relationship between Bruce and Hulk, where even at the end of the world, when everyone and everything else is dead, they still can't come to an agreement with each other. Bruce at least is able to do this by the story's end, pleading with the Hulk to let everything, all the pain and anger go, so that the two of them will be able to enter the next world, paradise, together. The Hulk refuses however, showing his usual stubborness, which no longer serves any purpose. This truly leads to the Hulk being, as he's always wanted, alone. Though he also seems to realize that being well and truly alone might not be the best thing either.Overall, Future Imperfect is leagues better than The End, but you get both for a fair price, so go with this collection. Both stories are well written and can definitely make you think, not only about the characters, but about what constitutes human nature and if we really are doomed to kill each other off.

I've never cared for the series marvel did. However, Future Imperfect is the greatest hulk story ever. Peter David and George Perez (no one does destruction like George) out did themselves. A century from now, when mankind has used atomic weapons for the last time, the world is ruled by the maestro, a mutated version of the hulk. Running the city of dystopia, the rebels have only one chance to bring him down. That's to bring the current hulk into the future. This is simply brilliant from being to end.

From former football star and bestselling author John Ed Bradley comes a searing look at love, life, and football in the face of racial adversity. “Heartbreaking,” says Laurie Halse Anderson, author of Speak.Growing up in Louisiana in the late 1960s, Tater Henry has experienced a lot of prejudice. His town is slow to desegregate and slower still to leave behind deep-seated prejudice.Despite the town’s sensibilities, Rodney Boulett and his twin sister Angie befriend Tater, and as their friendship grows stronger, Tater and Rodney become an unstoppable force on the football field. That is, until Rodney sees Tater and Angie growing closer, too, and Rodney’s world is turned upside down. Teammates, best friends—Rodney’s world is threatened by a hate he did not know was inside of him.As the town learns to accept notions like a black quarterback, some changes may be too difficult to accept.“John Ed Bradley skillfully shines a beam of humanity through the prism of the game, revealing to us the full spectrum of its colors, from love to hate, bigotry to tolerance, and devotion to betrayal. Anyone who ever played high school football or loved someone who has should read this book.” —Tim Green, retired NFL player and bestselling author

Call Me , by My Name, by John Ed Bradley

From School Library Journal Gr 8 Up—Narrator Rodney Boulet first meets Tater Henry in 1965 when Tater strolls into whites-only South City Park, hoping to try out for Pony League. While the other players heap plenty of verbal abuse on the young black boy, 10-year-old Rodney gets Tater safely out of the park before they can do physical harm. Over the next few years, Rodney and his twin sister, Angie, occasionally run into Tater in their small Louisiana town, and the three develop a casual friendship. When their high school is finally desegregated and both boys make the football team, their friendship is cemented. By the time they are seniors, the pair are leading the team to the state championship, which somewhat softens the town's narrow-minded views but not entirely: as Angie's and Tater's relationship moves beyond friendship, the couple are pressured from all sides. They do their best to ignore it, but as they dream of the not-too-distant day when all three of them will be at Louisiana State University, something happens that completely obliterates their plans. Students looking for lots of sports action may be disappointed, as this is a more contemplative tale of friendship in turbulent times. Rodney's quiet and matter-of-fact narration underscores the casual prejudice prevalent well into the 1970s in the Deep South. Recommend to fans of Patricia McKissack or Kristin Levine.—Kim Dare, Fairfax County Public Schools, VA

From Booklist It’s the late 1960s and desegregation has finally come to small-town Louisiana. Twins Rodney and Angie Boulett have always been friendly with Tater Henry, a black boy from the other side of town, but it isn’t until they are freshmen at the newly integrated high school that the three become inseparable. Rodney couldn’t be more loyal to his best friend, but their friendship begins to fracture when he discovers the truth of Angie and Tater’s relationship. This absorbing story shines a spotlight on the complexities and tension of racial integration. Most characters fall neatly into designated roles and the dialogue can feel didactic, but that doesn’t detract from the range of viewpoints reflecting the era’s social upheaval. The narration flows best during the lengthy football scenes, where the author’s history as a football player really shines. Rodney and Angie seem unusually close (how many 17-year-old siblings spoon?), but readers will connect with Rodney as he struggles to resolve his feelings. Grades 7-10. --Summer Hayes

Review The book "is so many other things that football might come third or fourth on the list. It is unflinching American history, it is cultural anthropology and it is a riveting morality play. Probably most of all it is a love story of the finest kind because it hurts all over and it mercilessly pits one kind of love against another in a genuine blood sport. John Ed Bradley has gathered a fine and believable cast of characters to tell a tough story, but above all Rodney Boulet stands as one of the most authentically, uncomfortably honest adolescent males I have read in quite some time." (Chris Lynch, author of the National Book Award Finalist Inexcusable)"John Ed Bradley skillfully shines a beam of humanity through the prism of the game, revealing to us the full spectrum of its colors, from love to hate, bigotry to tolerance, and devotion to betrayal. Anyone who ever played high school football or loved someone who has should read this book." (Tim Green, author of Unstoppable)"Recommend to fans of Patricia McKissack or Kristin Levine." (School Library Journal)“This engaging story shines a spotlight on the complexities and tension of racial integration...the author's history as a football player really shines...readers will connect with Rodney as he struggles to resolve his feelings.” (Booklist)* "With its tense but subtle plot trajectory structured by Rodney’s progress through high school, the novel adds nuance to the difficult American conversation on race with its honest examination of how a white youth, who sees himself on the vanguard of racial tolerance, is hit with his own limits when it comes to his beloved sister’s interracial romance. This compelling tale will foster both engaged group discussion and serious personal reflection." (Bulletin, starred review)"This heartbreaking story is as moving as it is poignant. Bradley forces the reader to examine deeper issues than racial tolerance.... This is a very well written tale that delves into an important issue." (VOYA)

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Is it a new favorite? Not particularly By Alexa @ Alexa Loves Books I hadn't heard of Call Me By My Name before it appeared in the mail one day. Reading the summary made me curious, and so, I decided to give this novel a chance. Is it a new favorite? Not particularly. But did I like it? Actually, yes, there are definitely things about it I did like. All in all, I'd say it was an average read.Though it didn't leave much of a mark on me, Call Me By My Name is by no means an easy read. It's hard to read about a time in history where such blatant racism and the accompanying aggression existed (especially if you reflect on the fact that it still exists in some places today). There were a lot of scenes that made me mad, sad and left me terrified or horrified -- which I guess is a good thing, since the writing at least elicited a ton of feeling out of me (even though not all these feelings were nice). It's interesting that the author chose to use Rodney (a white boy) as a narrator. He bears witness to majority of the big events that Tater (a black boy) experiences, both good and bad. I haven't felt so conflicted about a character in a while. Rodney's thoughts are bared to the reader, good, bad and confused, and it's not easy to swallow sometimes. It's a clever move, in a way, because it paints the situation in a more realistic light and almost challenges the reader to think about how they would have reacted or felt in his place.Even without a strong connection to the characters, and a few reservations about how the story was told, I still think it was worth it to read Call Me By My Name. While I wouldn't read it again, I do appreciate how it inspired me to reflect on race, prejudice and what it looks like today versus back then.

An eye-opener of a book By Teen Reads When we think about racism, an antiquated image of segregated water fountains and burning crosses usually assembles itself in our heads. We think that after the Civil Rights Movement of the 1960s, racism was virtually annihilated. We don't really think about the transition to integration that is so vividly illustrated in John Ed Bradley's novel, CALL ME BY MY NAME. The story is told from the point of view of Rodney Boulet (pronounced Boo-lay) as he recounts the adventures of his youth with his twin sister, Angie, and his black best friend, Tater Henry. Since the story takes place in Louisiana during the post-civil rights era of the 1970s, their friendship is highly controversial. Throw in a bit of romance, and we've got ourselves an all-out scandal.Overall, I thought that the writing was superb. Even the football scenes were easy to follow and there were plenty of details that were descriptive while not being overbearing. However, I found the story to be slightly sub-par. It started off very slow, and though it did pick up a bit, the entire time that I was reading, I was waiting for something big to happen. Nothing ever did. It is essentially a coming-of-age tale that navigates the changing attitudes of white southerners towards blacks in the 1970s. Luckily, there is a bit of a twist at the story's conclusion that is just poignant enough to earn the book a place in my heart.Despite the slow start, I would absolutely recommend this book to everyone. It is indeed an eye-opener that will cause all of its readers to think.

By SunshineRose Football, friendship, love, hate, prejudice and the world of the Deep South in the 60’s to early 70’s are introduced to readers through the lives of Tater Henry and Rodney Boulet. Tater and Rodney met on a summer day in 1965 when Tater came to the white park to try out for baseball. Uneducated about the invisible racial line separating the two parts of town, Rodney saved him from further harm from the white players who wished to educate him about it.It took 4 more years until their paths crossed permanently, and they soon became inseparable friends. Angie, Rodney’s twin sister, accepted Tater unconditionally while Rodney had to work to keep his racist father’s thoughts and behavior from becoming his own. Football unified them even more, as the two became almost as close as brothers. With Tater blazing new paths as the school’s first black quarterback, and Rodney his protective lineman, college scouts lined up for them. However, as Tater and Angie’s feelings for each other began to grow to more than friendship, Rodney’s flare-ups of racism seemed to increase. Can two boys of different races and backgrounds overcome years of hatred sown deeply through generations to have a time enduring friendship, or will society’s pressures doom them to failure?“Call Me By My Name” bears some similarities to the story of 1960’s football players Brian Piccolo and Gale Sayer (whose friendship was portrayed in the movie “Brian’s Song.”) It will remain with its readers long after the last page is turned. Recommended for readers 14 and older.SPOILER ALERT BELOWBe sure to have a box of tissues ready.
