Newbery Medal-winning author Matt de la Peña’s The Hunted is a high-energy, action-packed survival story and the sequel to The Living.“De la Peña has created a rare thing: a plot-driven YA with characters worthy of a John Green novel.”-Entertainment Weekly review of The Living, A- When the Big One hit, Shy was at sea in style. The Paradise Cruise luxury liner he worked on was a hulking specimen of the best money could buy. And now it's at the bottom of the Pacific Ocean, along with almost all of its passengers. Shy wasn't the only one to survive, though. Addie, the rich blond daughter of a mysterious businessman, was on the dinghy he pulled himself into. But as soon as they found the rest of the survivors, she disappeared. The only thing that filled the strange void of losing her was finding Carmen, his hot coworker, and discovering a way to get back home. But Shy's luck hasn't turned. Not yet. Back on the dinghy, Addie told him a secret. It's a secret that people would kill for--have killed for--and she has the piece that could turn everything on its ear. The problem? Shy has no idea where Addie is. Back home in California seems logical, but there are more ways to die back home then Shy could ever have guessed. And thanks to what Shy now knows, he's a moving target.Praise for The Hunted:“Readers will be drawn to the raw and gritty setting, fast-moving plot, and diverse characters worth rooting for.“—School and Library Journal"Between [the] fast-paced plot and meaningful, diverse character development, this is a great crossover for fans of both thrillers and more character-driven novels."-BooklistPraise for The Living:“De la Peña has created a rare thing: a plot-driven YA with characters worthy of a John Green novel.”-Entertainment Weekly, A- “Action is first and foremost. . . . The Hunted, by Matt de la Peña From School Library Journal Gr 9 Up—Previously, in The Living (Delacorte, 2013), Shy Espinoza's cushy summer job aboard a cruise ship was short-lived. A tsunami sunk the luxury liner, and Shy survived harrowing moments at sea, after learning that some of the passengers were working for Laso Tech, an evil biotech company responsible for Romero's Disease, a deadly contagion ravaging Southern California. In this episode, Shy and three friends survive in a dinghy for a month with some stolen vials of the precious Romero's vaccine, only to wash ashore and see the California coast devastated. Leveled by earthquakes, Los Angeles is an apocalyptic wasteland of rotting corpses and fearful survivors unable to contain Romero's epidemic. Vigilantes patrol the streets looking for the ill to kill, and the healthy have few places to isolate themselves. Shy's friends Marcus, Carmen, and Shoeshine hope to make their way to Arizona where scientists can duplicate the vaccine samples and save the masses. It is a race against time as they dodge Laso Tech's henchmen and desperate citizens willing to kill to survive—occasionally helped by a mysterious stranger on a motorcycle. Readers will be drawn to the raw and gritty setting, fast-moving plot, and diverse characters worth rooting for, such as Carmen, Shy's feisty Mexican coworker and romantic interest, and the philosophical Shoeshine, an older black man who sees Shy as more than just a resilient and steadfast kid, but a larger-than-life hero. VERDICT A more focused and linear sequel for fans of YA survival novels.—Vicki Reutter, State University of New York at Cortland

While I liked the book, it was a popcorn read and didn't (for me) deliver on the promise of epic post-apocalyptic chaos. In the Hunted, we meet Shy, Carmen, Shoeshine and Marcus as they finally reach shore, anxious to deliver the vaccine to scientists who will hopefully stop the spread of the Romero Virus. Now, I’ll stop here and say that if you didn't read the first book, you’ll have some trouble understanding the relationships here, as well as what caused the world to be in this condition. Stop now, and read the first book.Back to The Hunted...The author gives us a glimpse of what’s happened in California and how the world reacts, but much of the book is narrowly focused on Shy and his crew as they travel through a very dangerous land. Much of this is standard post-apocalyptic fare. Certain gangs that patrol various zones. Venture into them and die. Motorcycle riding Mad Max wannabes and desolate wastelands. You've seen it before. And before. And before. What stands out for me, bringing this book a touch above many other post-apoc books is Shy. Again, you really need to get to know him in book 1, but even here in The Hunted, Shy is a guy that anyone can relate to. It’s a breath of fresh air to have a main character who is Mexican, as well as other Mexican and Black characters who are actually important to the story. And as he did in The Living, you get a real sense of social status as an underlying theme. Rich vs. Poor plays out, though not quite as strongly as in book one.The ending wasn't as strong as I would have liked. In fact, there were 3 or 4 points at which I thought the book was over, only to turn the page and find there was more. And I’m not sure if there will be another book after this. I do hope there will be because, in spite of my nitpickings, I do like the book and I love Shy.A fun book, not earth shattering, but featuring a hero that people can really connect to. I’ll give this one 4 stars, but it’s a bit closer to 3.5.

Terrific sequel By Liviania I have wanted to read THE HUNTED since the moment I finished THE LIVING, and hearing Matt de la Peña read the first chapter at a book signing only whetted my appetite. THE HUNTED starts about a month later, when Shy, Carmen, Marcus, and Shoeshine finally make it to California. In THE LIVING, they had to mainly survive a fight against nature. Now, they have to mainly escape people. A biker gang is killing travelers to keep them from spreading the Romero virus. And a certain entity wants to kill Shy and his friends because they know too much about the virus. Their only hope is to hike across a picked-over post-apocalyptic California to Arizona. It is a brutal journey.I don't think THE HUNTED can truly be enjoyed without THE LIVING. De la Peña recaps the bare minimum, particularly when it comes to character relationships. I certainly don't think the passages involving Addie have much meaning if you haven't read the first book. Fortunately, both books in the duology are quick reads. The chapters are short of full of action, which keeps the pages turning.I felt that Shoeshine was more of a plot mechanism than a character in THE LIVING, so I like that he's a little more fleshed out in THE HUNTED. A former soldier is still an incredibly lucky person to have by your side in a survival situation, but THE HUNTED gives hints of his hobbies and of his past.I'm also truly thankful that rape isn't used as a threat in THE HUNTED. It is overplayed in dystopian/post-apocalyptic books, like everybody - not just rapists - couldn't resist the urge if civilization collapsed. People are too busy being awful to each other in other ways. (To be fair, a virus with a 100% death rate is scary.)THE HUNTED is a great survival against the odds story. The protagonist, Shy, is hugely likeable. I could read many more books featuring him. I'm happy to leave it at two, although there are some unanswered questions that de la Peña could answer in a third book. Be sure to read THE LIVING and THE HUNTED if you like quick books about intense journeys and noble causes featuring diverse casts.

The Living's ending was more like stopping the book mid chapter so The Hunted thankfully finishes the story. Really this should have been one book. Shy is now on land & as the title says, being hunted. There are a lot of unbelievable circumstances & too many coincidences to make this a great book, but despite this it is a very entertaining read. Shy & his companions find themselves on a very dangerous & difficult journey. Along the way Shy learns a few things about himself. Most of Shy's stupid decisions are stopped by something (much to his benefit) although at some point there is a huge drama scene with his companions. This was over the top & the end results were a predictable. It is possible that another book could be written regarding Shy's journey but it doesn't seem likely. For the most part the books stick with somewhat realistic events as in "it could happen" except for one point that was completely out of character with the book having a wacky supernatural feel. Don't get me wrong, I like plenty of supernatural books, but here it was nonsensical. I was shaking my heading thinking the good ol', "What the..." With that said, this is a book worth grabbing at the library for a quick & easy read, but not worth buying. Whatever you do, make sure you read The Living first.
