22 of 24 people found the following review helpful. Fun and better than the previous two incarnations but still very overpriced for what you get. By Alexander Lucard I was kind of surprised when Amazon asked me to review the third incarnation of the Pathfinder Adventure Card Game a month ago. After all, it came out in late May and it arrived in late July. However, they (and Paizo apparently) really wanted me to cover the game for them in the same manner that I covered the original Rise of the Runelords and its expansions. I’ll admit that even though I own all of Rise of the Runelords, I didn’t think the game was good enough to get a second set (Skulls & Shackles, much less a third. It was a fun but heavily flawed game with a really poorly written instruction manual and cards that often time just seemed thrown together to make a set without any flow or cohesion. Worst of all, the Pathfinder Adventure Card Game was like many Paizo releases – very overpriced for what you get coupled with a constant nickel and diming of their fan base.To complete an Adventure Card Game Set you’ll need the box set and the next five deck releases. That’s $120 just to complete the storyline. If you want the extra characters AND the ability to have more than four players take part, that’s an extra $20. Add in the MSRP $60 price tag for the base set and that means to finish any Pathfinder Adventure Card Game set, you are shilling out $200. That’s insane, especially for a card game. Even games with extremely detailed miniatures and large boards don’t cost that much. In truth, Paizo should be including the “Character Add-On Pack” with the core game and the price of the card decks should be $10-15. The MSRP on these are insane and unfortunately, much like the actual tabletop products Paizo releases, this is par for the course. You can generally get better written, better made and cheaper in cost releases from contemporaries. However, Paizo is one of the big two in the tabletop industry and so they can get away with this. It’s disheartening, but at least this games sell poorly enough that you can wait a year and get the base set for $20. That’s what I did with Skull and Shackles. I hate being this negative at the start of a review but for people who are brand new to Pathfinder (or Paizo’s business practices), you should be aware that the price tag attached to the base set is only a fraction of what you’ll actually pay.Now that this is out of the way, we can spend the rest of the review being positive. Compared to Rise of the Runelords, Wrath of the Righteous is proof that you can learn from your (many) mistakes. Not only is the base set’s rulebook cleaned up and easier for newcomers to follow, but mechanics and card verbiage are tightened up as well. There is also a new mechanic called Redemption where you can removed the Corrupted trait from a card for the rest of, not just the current Scenario you are in, but for the full Adventure Path. That’s really neat and gives you more of a continuity than just your character card getting checked off as you complete Scenarios/Adventures.Other examples of new options in Wrath of the Righteous include Cohorts which gives some characters an extra card in their starting hand. This is no small bonus as cards are your Hit Points in this game as well as your actions, so anything that gives you an extra one to your deck or hand is nothing to take lightly. Of course the drawback is that if you ever banish your Cohort, it is gone FOREVER. You have to go through the Adventure Path without it. So try not to lose it. The other new concept introduced with Wrath of the Righteous is the Mythic Path. In Rise of the Runelords, as you advanced through the game, you could earn one of two Prestige Classes which would give new powers and bonuses to your character. With Wrath of the Righteous you still have this , but you will also gain access to one of six Mythic Paths. Each of these paths enables you to store up Mythic Charges and expend them in special ways. You get to choose which of the paths you want, so it doesn’t HAVE to match up exactly with your character’s stats, but synergy, min/max’ing is a staple of any version of Pathfinder, so you’ll find it a lot easier to get through the game if you give your Dwarven Ranger say, Mythic Guardian instead of Mythic Archmage.Other than some new rules and cleaned up mechanics, Wrath of the Righteous plays exactly like Rise of the Runelords. You complete Adventures, which are broken down into scenarios. Each Add-On Pack (including the one in the Base Set) contains one full adventure, which is made of up six scenarios. A scenario will be a play session that last you between fifteen minutes and one hour, depending on the number of players and how much you discuss your actions as a team. The more players you have, the more you have to explore so sometimes less players makes for an easier time and vice versa. It just depends on the characters you pick and the current scenario you are in.You have seven character options in Wrath of the Righteous and another four in the Add-On Pack. If you have the previous releases you CAN use the characters from those games, but they might not work as well simply because the game is geared for the characters in this set. Still the flexibility is nice. I personally usually go for Harsk the Dwarven Ranger as he is the most balanced in the game, but for Wrath of the Righteous my character was Seelah the Paladin. I figured since Wrath of the Righteous was demon-oriented, a holy warrior who could heal and kick butt was a good option. My wife, who has never played any version of Pathfinder before chose Enora, the Halfing (She kept calling her character a Kender though, being a 1e Dragonlance lady) Arcanist. This was my first time playing a Pathfinder Adventure Card Game with only two players (I have done more and solo play), but I found the game to work really well with just two PCs. Perhaps it is the refined rules or maybe it was the character tandem we chose, but I found Wrath of the Righteous to be a much easier experience in terms of vetting the rules and also going through the game. My wife said she found the game to be “complicated but fun” and something she wouldn’t mind trying again, but she does prefer other card games like Batman Fuxx or the DC Super Heroes Deck Building Games. In terms of RPG style board games she did prefer ones like The Legend of Drizzt and Conquest of Nerath. I should point out both of those games are cheaper than Wrath of the Righteous and offer far more replay value too. That makes me (her?) sound like a D&D shill but those are the RPG style boardgames she prefers.Setting up the Pathfinder Adventure Card Game takes a long time, regardless of set. You have to sort out all of the cards into types, then get out your scenario card. After that you did through the locations to set up the right spots needed for this scenario. Then you create a deck for each location based on their cards lists. You shuffle each deck of each type, create a location deck and then shuffle that. Then you add in the Big Bad and its henchmen and shuffle once more. Depending on your rolls, setup can take longer than the actual scenario itself. Considering there are only six scenarios to a pack, this means you have a game that takes up a lot of room but doesn’t take long to play. Even worse, because each scenario is meant to be played in a specific order and cannot be replayed when finished (no grinding here!), the replay value on any PACG set is abysmally low. Unless of course you want to count starting the game over from scratch, which is certainly doable, but that’s like replaying a tabletop adventure and that never works out well when you have the exact same people involved. So if a lack of replay and high cost sound like pretty good deterrents to picking up Wrath of the Righteous, you probably shouldn’t.What is nice though is that unlike previous box sets, you get a full adventure in addition to the first adventure pack in Wrath of the Righteous. That’s another five adventures not connected to the core storyline where you can learn the basics of the game, grind up a bit before moving on to the actual Adventure Path and hopefully improve your deck/stats. Wrath of the Reighteous had this, but you only had two or three extra scenarios while Wrath of the Righteous gives you that full set. That’s a nice bonus and shows Paizo has learned to give customers a little more for their money. After everything is finally set up, you’re final able to start playing. You and your allied will go through each location deck, with the goal being to “close” out the location. You do that by going through all the cards in the deck or by finding/defeating the Henchmen in the deck. Once you are down to a single location, that means there is only the Boss left. Now you can encounter the boss prior to this, but if you beat them, they run away again and again until there is only the one location deck left, meaning they are at their final stand. As you go through each deck you’ll turn over cards. Some will be cards you can acquire and add to your own collection, like spells, armor, weapons and items. Others will be cards you have to defeat/disable, like traps and monsters. To acquire or fight, there will be a target number on the card. You must achieve this number or higher by rolling a die and adding in any bonuses you get to said roll. The type of die you roll is based on the check you must make and your character. For example, in my games with my wife, my Paladin had a d10 to her Charisma, meaning she was very good at getting Ally cards. My wife’s character could only roll a d8 in Charisma checks. This meant I had a higher rate of success with Charisma based rolls. Meanwhile her character had a d12 Intelligence while mine only had a d4 so obviously we know who is going to be better there… A good way to ensure you will succeed is that your characters complement each other. If all you have are a thief and a fighter, you’ll be good at battles and traps, but if an Arcane check comes up, you’re pretty much dead. The same is true if you take say, a Sorcerer and a Wizard. Strength checks will not be your friend. As you take damage, you will lose cards from your deck. Once your deck is gone, you are dead. So it’s a matter of keeping your deck replenished while also battling the clock to ensure you find and defeat the boss before the Blessings Deck runs out. The Blessings deck is essentially a timer. If you beat the Scenario, you can see what kind of bonus you get for winning. It might be a permanent power-up to your character or an item. Then you can remake your deck and play another Scenario or call it quits for the day and go through the long clean-up process. Again, there is a VERY good chance that you’ll spend more time setting things up and tearing them down than you actually do playing the game, but at least the game is a lot of fun while you’re in the scenario. So checks and balances with Wrath of the Righteous. It’s definitely overpriced compared to other options out there, especially when you factor in having to buy a lot of extras to make the game complete. There isn’t a lot of replay value and setting up/tearing down takes a lot of time. At the same time, the game is a lot of fun and the randomness means even if you do start over and replay some scenarios, it will be different each time. The rules are the best they have ever been and it’s a fine alternative to traditional roleplaying games. The same Adventure Path in tabletop form costs a lot more than the card game version and you do need four to six people to play every step of the way with that or your characters will die horribly. The card game version of Wrath of the Righteous is very well balanced (perhaps too easy compared to the first two games) and solo play means you can have fun even if no one else is around. At the end of the day you have to decide if you want to invest the full $200 or not into this game. There are a lot of better options for the price point. Comparing just the base sets, I’d go with the upcoming Warhammer Quest card game from Fantasy Flight over this. As well if you look at the full cost of playing this game from beginning to end, I’d rather go with Cthulhu Wars by Petersen Games which offers far more replayability and some fantastic miniatures for use with the game. If you’re a big Pathfinder fan though, the card game version is far more flexible than the traditional RPG version, costs a lot less and offers the aforementioned solo play. So there are a lot of positives, but also a lot of negatives when you look at Wrath of the Righteous critically. You just have to decide which side outweighs the other when it comes to your specific tastes and needs.

5 of 5 people found the following review helpful. Great game By Brent Butler First, let me say that the materials are first rate. The box is large and sturdy. It contains generous sized card trays with plenty of slots for not only the cards that come with the game, but for expansions as well. The cards themselves are also sturdy, and the art is very attractive. There is a wide variety in them.Despite a rulebook that is much shorter than the complex Avalon Hill and SPI rule sets my friends and I struggled to learn in our younger days, this game does have a substantial learning curve. If you are getting this to play with friends, you don't want to all start this game cold and "learn as you go". It would be wise to sit down and play through this game on your own or with one other person before introducing it to a group of newcomers. We're still new to this, and the setup at our level of understanding is a bit arduous. However, once we got started, we found the game play to be lively and entertaining, which is all you can ask for. In my opinion, this game will have a LOT of replay potential, since drawing to differing beginning set-ups insures that you don't have a set path to follow once you start.Recommended.

Durney Playing Dungeons & Dragons style games requires someone to act as the dungeon master and direct the game play,The Pathfinder card game system replaces a dungeon master with a deck of cards allowing all players to play or allowing real solo play.Pathfinder enjoys a large established presence with a number of blogs that support play with discussion, advice and answers to questions. This is invaluable to the new player as a guide and teacher.D&D style games are NOT easy or quick to learn, their and a number of rules that need to be mastered.Additionally, a sequence of play is important along with an understanding of monsters, weapons, spells and any number of items. This game is no exception! You will need to study the rules, think and investigate to master this game. This is NOT a quick an easy game for casual play but a relatively in-depth dungeon crawl with a full story line, interesting characters where thought and planning will pay off.Someone said this is just flipping cards. I’m not sure they really got into the game or tried to understand play. You need to understand the abilities and limits of your character(s), quickly select a tactic to deal with monsters and take advantage of wins while dealing with setbacks.Overall, this excellent game works with a group or alone.Wrath of the Righteous is a base game, containing the items needed to play this game. The game contains one introductory adventure and the first installment of the Worldwound adventure.If/when, you buy additional items; you need to stay with the Wrath of the Righteous title.Currently, there are three base games available each a different adventure. Each base game comprises additional characters and adventures building to completion of an adventure. Each base game has five or six additional adventures available for separate purchase.Character decks will work with any base game giving you more options and adding depth. This can be an expensive but very rewarding gaming experience. If you want a dungeon crawl and cannot always have Dungeon Master this is an excellent choice. The game has depth, plenty of options and will provide hours of enjoyment. This is a well-supported system with the potential for almost unlimited expansions and a substantial active group of players.

Nothing out of the ordinary is supposed to happen. But as soon as she arrives she meets Holt Roth. Holt is unlike anyone she’s ever met before – and her reaction to him is even more unexpected. Then she meets his friend, Samuel Cheshire. If her reaction to Holt was strong, her reaction to Samuel is shocking. The only problem is that he seems to hate her for no reason at all. I mean, I was able to finish it and I wanted to know what was going to happen to Autumn, Samuel, and Holt. I just felt that a lot of times the characters reacted irrationally, there were a few things that need to be cleared up, and the ending was left undone (that is the best way I can explain it).Okay, here's the story (Spoiler Alert):Autumn has decided to stay the summer with her friend in Castelton, Maine. She's trying to give her parents time to focus on their dying marriage and really doesn't want to be around to see it crash and burn. So, when she arrives via airplane she is expecting to have her best friend pick her up, however the best friend is MIA. A complete STRANGER shows up at the airport(for an unknown reason), saves some guy from falling off of a light pole, and introduces himself as Holt, then basically says "Hey, I live in Castelton, let me give you a ride." Sounds weird, I know but that's basically how the whole book goes, weird things happen with no explanation. They see each other a few times after that and then he decides that they can't 'see each other' for a while....I don't think they had even been on a real date. Through out that, Samuel (who she feels 'drawn' to), is rude and sarcastic towards her. Then, his relatives threaten her with bodily harm if she's ever seen with Holt again. That's about how the rest of the book goes, with Holt backing off then coming back and all of Samuel's family giving her death threats for wanting to be with Holt, because they want her to marry Samuel. (She has only know both boys for a total of two weeks by the end of the story and she is SIXTEEN.)I could have used more Samuel in this book, less overly dramatic or irrational characters, and more romance from the boys....I mean they are both supposed to either want or need to marry her, right?I couldn't give it less than three stars because I was able to finish the book and I would like to know what happens. So there ya go, a confusing review for a confusing book. lol Don't take my word for it, read it yourself! ;)

By Elizabeth Corrigan (cross-posted from Wading Through Electronic Ink blog)The PlotAutumn is looking forward to a summer in Maine with her best friend and away from her arguing parents. She is especially excited when she meets Holt and Samuel, the good-looking sons of the wealthiest families in town. But she can't ignore the strange things that happen around Holt - how everyone seems to like him, how the flowers in his garden seem to come to life. And she can't explain why Samuel is determined to keep her away from Holt, even though he barely talks to her himself. Whatever is going on, Autumn's summer is turning out to be more eventful than she was expecting. The GoodI got quite wrapped up in One Black Rose, and I stayed up late to finish it, rather than put it aside to finish the next day. Part of this was because I couldn't easily flip through chapters in my Kindle version. (Yes, I read books out of order. Yes, I am aware that you probably think this is a travesty against literature. I maintain that reading is a highly personal experience, and you can do nothing about how I choose to engage in it.) But part of it was that the pacing of the story was very good. I got a little bit more information about what was going on at just the right intervals that I was constantly curious but never felt like I had to wait too long for more information.I also appreciated Autumn's best friend Carley. I feel like a number of books I have read lately have a set-up where the main character has a "best friend" who is either unlikable or has nothing in common with the main character. We as readers have a hard time fathoming why these two girls are friends, and we are left with an unsatisfying explanation like "we've been friends since kindergarten." I know that by the time I was in high school, I was no longer close with my grade school friends with whom I had nothing in common, so I can't imagine why I would expect a YA heroine would be any different. But Carley was a good kind of friend. She had her flaws, and her family did things differently than Autumn, but overall it made sense to me that the girls spent time together. The BadOnce again I find myself wondering how it is that someone can write an entire novel about a girl with no real personality traits or interests. Other than meeting boys, watching movies, and working at the coffee shop, Autumn doesn't seem to do anything. I don't even have a firm grasp on what she looks like, so I do wonder why all the best-looking boys in town are suddenly interested in her, and I can't really figure out why her friends aren't equally puzzled. My other issue with One Black Rose is that the mythology is a little unclear. As far as I can tell, fairies are a lot like regular humans in that they age like normal people and seem to live entirely on earth and not in a fairy realm. Most of the fairies seem to have been human at one point. So other than magical powers and an association with a particular season, I'm not sure what makes a fairy a fairy. The RomanceI was disappointed with the romance in One Black Rose, which is the main reason that it does not hit the elusive five star rating. The set-up is good, albeit not especially original. A girl comes to town and meets two boys to whom she feels a preternatural attraction, and her choice between them will have more consequences than just her happiness. The idea that she is destined for one of the boys but in love with the other is perhaps overly reminiscent of Amanda Hocking's My Blood Approves, but we will forgive it that. The trouble is that while Holt is likable enough, I just don't feel that he and Autumn have the kind of love that is worth sacrificing everything for. I mean, by the end of the book, they've only known each other for a couple of weeks. I am also disappointed that we see so little of Samuel. What he thinks and feels is very important to the story, but we actually don't know what is going on with him most of the time. And given that her choice has large consequences for both Autumn and the fairy world, I would think that she would want to know what he and his family want as well. Will I read more?At this point I'm thinking yes. One Black Rose was a quick and engaging read, and I would take the time to read more. I'm also hoping that we get more from the Winter Court's perspective, although that could be my own bias.Ooh, I now see that it just became available last weekend. I think I'll go get it now...

5 of 5 people found the following review helpful. It leaves you wanting more. Buy the first and second books together ;-) By Cali Reader I haven't ready many fairy books but every time I do, I fall in love again. One Black Rose was no exception. I like the main character Autumn and her tenacity. She isn't easily swayed by a persons looks which is a nice change from so many of the other paranormal romance books I read. In this book there are a lot of questions that weren't fully answered so I'm excited to buy the 2nd book in this series and figure out what is REALLY going on. If you enjoy the magic of fairies, I highly recommend this book.

He does not leave! Though we may feel He is not listening, He is."-Hope N. Griffin, Finding JoyWords that came to mind while reading Finding Joy: The Year Apart That Made Me a Better Wife by Hope N. Griffin, were wrestling and honesty. In this book, we get to see inside the heart of a woman, going through a challenge, and coming through on the other side with a different perspective. It is a story of deployment, but it applies to so many life situations.Finding Joy is Hope N. Griffin's story of a one year separation from her husband (due to war), the challenges she faced, God's faithfulness, and how she made it through. This book is for the military wife, but other women will be able to connect in going through a challenge, and discovering your strengths and capabilities, where you need help, but most importantly, that God is in the middle of it all, helping you through.Hope has taken the stories of Esther, Bathsheba, Sarah and Hagar, and Ruth, and drawn parallels to her own life during that season. You will find how these women prospered in the midst of their life challenges, and what you can also do to be successful.A few topics Hope addresses include:* The words we say to our spouse* How to guard or heart and minds* Finding God in the midst of our challenge* Battling bitterness and self-pityAt the end of each chapter are questions for further reflection on what you have read. This book would make a good Bible study for military wives, especially those going through a deployment. There are tips within the pages to help your story be one of success and not despair.I learned some things while reading this book. Books with lots of theology often push me deeper into my study of the Word of God and I so appreciate that. One of my favorite things about this book was the analogy she made of The Parable of the Ten Virgins to waiting on one's spouse to return from deployment. With the same anticipation and readiness a wife would prepare for the return of her husband from war, is the same anticipation and readiness we should employ for our soon coming King! I loved that! It totally implanted a huge truth inside my heart.I recommend this book to any wife, military spouse or not, who needs some tips or wisdom on how to make it through life's challenges, come out on the other side, and find God there walking with you through it all. Many blessings to you as you journey through life with Him,BethDisclosure: I received a free copy of this book in exchange for my review. I was not required to give a positive review. The thoughts and opinions here are entirely my own.

By Karen Watkins Sometimes books like this can come across as well-meaning but shallow advice from someone who only imagines what you are experiencing. Hope's book is based solidly in her own deeply-engraved experiences and hard-won lessons on faith, trust, love and joy. When she encourages us to trust God, she speaks as someone who has been through the long dark places of not trusting Him, and the long confusing journeys of being able to only trust Him.The questions she poses at the end of each chapter open the door in our own circumstances to see that God's been waiting there all this time.Hope offers no easy answers. She does not promise that if you only trust God enough you will receive health, wealth, and the perfect life. But she does present a loving God Who sees us, never leaves us, and is in fact Good.

0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. Not just for military wives! By Amy Odland It is pretty obvious Hope wrote this book as an encouragement to her fellow military wives - and she did a wonderful job at that. What surprised me, as a non-military wife, was how much of it still applied to me, someone who sees her husband every day! Hope writes from her experience and her heart, and I can't imagine this book not being a HUGE source of encouragement to other wives, military or not, to find their joy in being a wife and in knowing they're not alone even when they feel like they are. Her personal insights to scripture stories such as Esther and Ruth were helpful in seeing these stories in ways other bible studies may not have approached.

By Abetterway FINALLY a book that gives the reader practical/truthful information about relationships, which helps all of us make better informed choices for our lives. What a different world we'd have if every parent sat down and read this book with their teens. The book is not a list of endless rules, it is a treasure chest of reasons to choose wisely. Well done!

What was my marriage role?Underneath I thought I might be uniquely beautiful but not like this book suggests. I was caught up in "you ....take care of me, .....help ..... I can't do it for myself since I'm in such a merciless plight" from page 85 .....just imagining my marriages "..like two intertwining flames." Page 167 would have helped me not to get divorced.

1 of 2 people found the following review helpful. This adventure is fun to run and play in By M. Baker This adventure is fun to run and play in. My only complaint is the cover art in this series. Read on to see a much more detailed account of why I feel that way. But first the story. The story is a great adventure to track down the hill giant who attacked your adopted town. We had a great time playing. Some real challenges and yet also some really fun encounters on the way, with the boat ride and a stow away. I would recommend this to any group. I see no real faults in it.My only complaint is the cover art. Jesper Ejsing is an amazing artist, and technically is fantastic. I am not sure if it is the art director or Jasper but I literally have a hard time figuring out what is going on in these background action images for this series. The rest of Jasper's art on line is much more accessible visually.I am not sure what Paizo is doing but this continues in the rest of the series as it goes on. It is very disappointing. I run a good art school and I am usually very impressed with Jasper's work, but although it is technically perfect as always, in this series, it is often visually just overcrowded and sometimes downright macabre or demented in the way the giants are presented. I do not get it. In so much of the rest of Jasper's work there is a subtle nobility and depth to the figures, as if they are being treated with respect. Strange as it sounds, it just feels like the images and the way they are being laid out do not respect the characters or enemies in the story line. I know, it sounds strange, but look at the rest of Jasper's work on line and you will see the difference. It has to do with how the people are portrayed and the way to is staged.I would suggest a difference approach in the future. Too much "action" in a scene does not make it exciting, it just makes it busy and inaccessible. And too much ugly demented looking enemies is a real turn off. I mean, I always thought giants were humanoids, not inbred freak shows like the ogres. The worst cover is the next one in the series with the hideous looking female hill giant chief. The next worst is the Ice tomb of the Giant Queen in which I literally cannot figure out what the hell is going on in the background other than some kind of upside-down battle. And because of the demented nature of the other giants on the other covers I did not even know the Queen was supposed to be undead. She just looks messed up.I hope future covers are a little more tame or balanced in some fashion and less confusing. It seems a waste of Jasper's remarkable talent to assemble poorly balanced macabre works in what could have been inviting and inspiring images like almost everything else he has done.

By Susan It is not a road any of us planned to walk down, but then something happened and there we were - alone (or so we thought) on the road to a separation or a divorce. This book is a book you need to own. You also need to order several to give away to friends or family members who are walking this road. Pastors of churches should order them in bulk. The photography is beautiful and the stories offer hope to those in the midst of separation and divorce. I first ordered the book for Kindle and now also own a paperback edition as well. You will not be disappointed! There is Hope Beyond Divorce!

She is a genuine person with a sad, but truly genuine story of loss and brokenness. Most importantly though, it is also a story of redemption and restoration through her steadfast Christian faith. I am a Pastor who continually councils couples whose marriages are fractured and do not know which way to turn next. Hope's book is most definitely a book I will be sharing as a gift to those who are going through the grieving process of divorce. Personally, I found that the Bible verses that she quoted were the, "silver-lining" in a very dark cloud of uncertainty. Take my advice and purchase this book for yourself or other friends and family members who may be facing some of the same challenges. I do not believe you will be disappointed. Pastor Freddie Pierce

And We Stay, by Jenny Hubbard

From School Library Journal Gr 9 Up—Emily Beam is a new student at Amherst School for Girls. There are rumors, of course, about why she has entered the school in January of her junior year, but none of them come close to reality. The truth remains only for Emily to replay over and over, each time revealing a bit more about the circumstances leading up to the day when her boyfriend entered the school library where she was working with her class, lured her into the stacks to talk, and then shot himself in the head. (By the way, If you're wondering why no one simply Googled Emily's mysterious past, her story is set in 1995, perhaps for that very reason.) As the teen acclimates to boarding-school life, she keeps her story close to her chest, but reveals herself little by little through the poems she writes and ultimately shares. Emily feels an affinity for her namesake, Emily Dickinson, who lived and wrote just down the street from ASG, and draws on her spirit to pour her emotions onto paper. And We Stay is a little gem of a book. Readers learn as much about Dickinson's beliefs and poetry as they do about friendship, first love, teen suicide, and even abortion-not an easy balancing act. Yet despite the heavy topics, the book feels sweet and poetic and never gratuitous. Budding poets may particularly appreciate Emily's story, but there is certainly something for anyone looking for a good read with a strong, believable female lead who is working her hardest to overcome tragedy.—Jill Heritage Maza, Montclair Kimberley Academy, Montclair, NJ

From Booklist *Starred Review* Like Paper Covers Rock (2011), Hubbard’s sophomore novel has a boarding-school setting and a main character who writes poetry and draws inspiration from a famous writer. And also like Paper Covers Rock, this novel is accomplished, polished, and mixes prose and poetry to stunning effect. After Emily Beam discovers that she is pregnant and breaks up with her boyfriend, he walks into the school library, threatens Emily, and then shoots himself. After an abortion, Emily is sent away to the Amherst School for Girls, in Amherst, Massachusetts, which is located in the hometown of Emily’s idol, Emily Dickinson. The spirit of Dickinson is everywhere—even her voice echoes in Emily’s head—and as Emily immerses herself in Dickinson’s 1,775 poems, she writes her anguish into poems of her own, which flood her brain constantly. Emily’s path to healing involves moving back and forth in time, to memories of Paul, and sharing her poems with empathetic roommate, K. T. The third-person, present-tense voice is compelling. Sounding almost like stage directions (“Emily Beam is sighing all the time”), Hubbard’s narrative tone will only make readers want to lean in closer. The poems themselves are insightful and poignant, illuminating the dark corners of Emily’s psyche. And though Emily may be damaged and the winter of 1994 is long, happier times—and spring—seem on the horizon. Grades 9-12. --Ann Kelley

Review Starred Review, Kirkus Reviews, November 15, 2013:"Teasing out strands of the past and the present, Hubbard masterfully twines together a story of one girl’s journey to self-identity...As graceful as a feather drifting down, this lyrical story delivers a deep journey of healing on a tragic theme."Starred Review, Booklist, November 15, 2013:"This novel is accomplished, polished, and mixes prose and and poetry to stunning effect...Hubbard’s narrative tone will only  make readers want to lean in closer."Starred Review, School Library Journal, January 2014:"A little gem of a book...Despite the heavy topics, the book feels sweet and poetic and never gratuitous. Budding poets may particularly appreciate Emily’s story, but there is certainly something for anyone looking for a good read with a strong, believable female lead who is working her hardest to overcome tragedy."Publishers Weekly, October 21, 2013:"Hubbard’s writing is elegant and emotional...Mature readers who enjoy a bit of melancholy and might spark to Dickinson will be in good company on Emily’s journey."BookPage, February 2014:"Hubbard is an accomplished poet as well as a novelist, and Emily Beam’s poems are remarkably good. Writing these poems leads Emily out of the darkness of a New England winter and into a fragile spring—out of tragedy and into something resembling hope."Shelf Awareness, February 21, 2014:"Most poetry comes from a place of deep emotion. That's certainly true for Emily Beam, Jennifer Hubbard's (Paper Covers Rock) sympathetic protagonist in And We Stay... Hubbard convincingly integrates Emily Beam's poems alongside her recollections of Paul and her life before boarding school."VOYA, December 2013:"[Hubbard] captures perfectly the turbulence of young love, the bonds of friendship, and the push-and-pull dynamic between teens and adults...Definitely recommend this book to your introspective patrons who relish romantic tragedy, poetry, and intricate relationships among girls and their boyfriends, friends, and teachers."TeenReads.com, January 22, 2014:"This book is truly beautiful both inside and out. Within the story, Hubbard elegantly navigates the prose of Emily’s life combined with the many poems Emily writes to cope with the misfortunes that have befallen her...The way Hubbard writes AND WE STAY is both attractive and exquisite."From the Hardcover edition.

Grieving parents. Yellow ribbons and candles.Odds are not that you think about the people the killer left behind. In And We Stay, Jenny Hubbard introduces us to one such survivor: Emily Beam, whose boyfriend brought a gun to school and killed himself. Now in a boarding school in Amherst (we never know where Emily lived prior to this, aside from the name of a fictional county), Emily is rigid with survivor’s guilt. Hers has many layers, though. Paul appeared to want to kill her, he was angry with a breakup she precipitated, he was angry with decisions she made without consulting him. He was angry. Hurt. Heartbroken. And she believes – she knows - it was all her fault. Her roommate, KT, also suffers from survivor’s guilt, and this commonality helps bind the two girls. Emily manages to form other relationships, specifically with a wayward artist and a French teacher – but for the most part, her attempt to regain her footing and forgive herself is one she does by herself. Well, she does have some help, in the form of the ghost of Emily Dickinson.Like Miss Dickinson, Emily Beam is a poet. She writes to help herself make sense of what happened and how she feels about it. Her poems are an outlet not just for creativity, but survival of sorts. She also reads and re-reads a collection of Dickinson’s poems, and she occasionally wonders if Dickinson’s ghost isn’t hanging around a wee bit.Hubbard peppers the story with occasional flashbacks to Emily’s relationship with Paul and what happened the day he died. The more we know, the more we sympathize with Emily. What she suffered and witnessed was horrific, and that she is able to function at all is admirable. While the story here is solid, it feels as if it is written to keep us all at arm’s length, which is ironic because Emily Beam struggles throughout the book to get closer to Emily Dickinson. She uses Dickinson’s poetry to help make sense of her struggles, but we are not afforded the same privilege. We want to know Emily better. Where is she from? Why is her first reaction to a piece of unsettling and potentially devastating news to tell her parents, yet she seems to pull away from them? Do they have a good relationship or not? Why does she appear to have no friends to keep in touch with from “back home”? She was a cheerleader. Was she an outcast, aside from her relationship with Paul? Yes, we understand why she doesn’t pursue friendships at her new school. But what about the hometown kids? And what of Emily’s relationship with Paul? She seems fairly unapologetic for its outcome, yet theirs was a romance that moved at a bit of a quick clip. Emily becomes intimate with him within a matter of weeks, even though she appears to be unmoved by sex and sexuality.Fortunately, the good outweighs the bad. Emily may keep us all at arm’s length, but she can’t stop us from caring about her. Yes, we have questions – lots of them – but we can’t blame Emily for what happened. If nothing else, we like her too much to do so.Still, though, I would have liked to know more about her.Published on cupcake's book cupboardThanks to NetGalley for the preview@VivaAmaRisata

By Brandi Leigh Kosiner I requested to read this one on Netgalley because I have always been draw to self-harm and suicide, and even though I was touched personally by suicide by gun with my dad in 2012, those key words still attract my attention and I want to read it. I don't know if its healthy, but I just feel compelled to read about others who have been through these things, and see how they heal, and move on. When I read the synopsis, I saw a keyword that I had missed when I first requested though--the dreaded (for me) prose. I almost didn't even start this one, but I still picked it up and opened it and I am glad that I did. Most of it is done in narrative, and while I skimmed the poems, they were not primarily how the story is told. And We Stay is told in a somewhat strange to me format though, it is 3rd person, and that is not the prevalent way to tell a story in YA these days, and sometimes it distances me from the main character, but it was no so with Emily. I of course related to her because a loved one killed himself, but also just her whole countenance and way of thinking. It wasn't overly dark to where I was depressed every time I picked it up, since it is a bit out from the big event and she is already at the boarding school. I can also totally relate how she keeps people at arm's length although mine happened even before grief and because of my anxiety, but hers is because the girls at school don't know what she went through with her boyfriend Paul, and she doesn't want them to. The story was well paced, and it was all about the flashbacks, piecing together the relationship between Paul and Emily, and what led them to that day. We see Emily working through things in her own head and through writing poetry and trying to heal. She begins to trust others as well as reach out to people that she knew from her hometown, those who knew her and who also knew Paul, who are grieving as well. This story is all about character development and even though there wasn't huge action scenes, there was lots of powerful and emotional things, as well as a blossoming friendship that kept me enthralled. I enjoyed this journey with Emily and recommend to those who love a darker and emotional contemporary.Bottom Line: Great contemporary, very emotional and lots of character growth.

In AND WE STAY, Jenny Hubbard takes on this heavy topic, telling the story of Emily Beam, a teen who survived the terrifying suicide of her boyfriend.Entering the Amherst School for Girls halfway through the school year, Emily Beam is immediately confronted with culture shock and questions. She's not up to snuff on fashion trends, she hasn't had time to figure out the social rituals of boarding school, she doesn't have the kind of money that her classmates have, and, on top of all this, there are the rumors that come with being the new girl. The new girl who shows up in January of junior year. Emily isn't eager to talk about what happened in the library that day, but she is eager to write. Even if she doesn't share it right away. Emily has always felt close to Emily Dickinson, and now in Emily D.'s hometown, she finds herself writing more poems than ever, occasionally sneaking off campus to visit the Emily Dickinson house. But as much as she tries to keep her world small, soon Emily Beam grows closer to her room mate and the other girls at ASG, and she finds she has choices to make.Jenny Hubbard's writing is elegant and succinct, playing well alongside the wintery atmosphere of New England winter. The author's choice to set the story in 1995 gives AND WE STAY an extra sense of remoteness: no cell phones, no Google, and no email make for an almost claustrophobic feeling in both the small communities of Emily Beam's home town and the all-girls boarding school. This is a beautiful, important book, and one that I hope will find the readers who need it.
