It is said that one in four people is a narcissist. The world is experiencing a narcissist epidemic like never before. We work, date, attend school, and live with narcissists. Narcissists are so common that most of the negative personality disorders on the DSM (Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders) list some of the narcissistic traits within each disorder. It is becoming so common that the DSM actually removed Narcissistic Personality Disorder from their list!

Narcissists are all around us on a daily basis. Most of us can see a narcissist coming from a mile away. He acts spoiled and self-deserving. He wants everyone else to constantly pat him on the back and tell him how great he is. He can't stop checking himself out in the mirror. He doesn't seem to have any empathy or sympathy for others, and sometimes doesn't even seem to have an awareness of the people who are around him.

I say "him" because a majority of narcissists are men. However, there are narcissistic women out there as well. Sometimes, you can find a narcissistic mother behind a narcissistic son. Narcissistic mothers aren't as easy to spot as a narcissistic man is. She often may drone on and on about her children, instead of droning on and on about herself. She sees herself as a grandiose mother whose skills and motherly qualities are far superior to other mothers. She will dole out advice and criticism to others at the drop of a hat. Don't let her fool you - using her children as a way to feed her own super-ego is still narcissism at its finest.

These narcissists may stand out easily to you. But did you know that there are other forms and types of narcissism that are much less apparent? In this audiobook, we'll discuss the tell-tale signs of the most common narcissists.

Scarlett Undercover, by Jennifer Latham

From School Library Journal Gr 6–10—Sixteen-year-old Scarlett is a Sam Spade-talking, fedora-wearing Muslim American who runs her own detective agency in the gritty city of Las Almas. Scarlett's usual cases involve adultery and insurance fraud until a 10-year-old girl hires her to investigate a suicide. The minute the teen takes the case, she is tailed by two strange girls with gold circles in their eyes. Someone breaks into her apartment and steals a family heirloom. Even her closest friends start acting like the world is ending. Scarlett quickly discovers that her case isn't just about a suicide, but rather an ancient war between genies and the descendants of King Solomon. There is a relic that could tip the balance of power. Scarlett is tough and fiercely independent. While her older sister takes comfort in religion, the protagonist finds solace in her father's old copy of One Thousand and One Nights. Unfortunately, the novel suffers from its heavy hard-boiled lingo which, in its modern setting, becomes a distraction from the characterization. Despite this, the supernatural mystery is engaging and the Muslim American teenage sleuth will be a welcome addition to YA shelves. VERDICT A fun, if flawed, whodunit with a diverse protagonist who is an heir apparent to Veronica Mars.—Kimberly Garnick Giarratano, Rockaway Township Public Library, NJ

Jennifer Latham touches a deep pulse of teenage angst, introduces a grandly original P.I. heroine, and taps a yet-deeper pulse of 2015 America. Embracing a unique debut novel."―James Ellroy, bestselling author of L.A. With its capable, relatable heroine, a twisting plot, and a cast of diverse characters, Latham's tale will keep you on your toes, turning pages long into the night."―Ryan Graudin, author of The Walled City"Witty and suspenseful, Scarlett Undercover is an inventive mystery steeped in Islamic tradition, starring a hard-boiled heroine with a heart."―Sheba Karim, author of Skunk Girl"One part snarky Veronica Mars in its noir-meets-adolescence setup and one part levelheaded Da Vinci Code with its religious symbolism-tinged quest."―The Horn Book

About the Author Jennifer Latham has had some really normal jobs and some really weird ones, including school psychologist, middle school teacher, yoga instructor, and autopsy assistant. 2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. Scarlett Undercover By Angie I'm sadly disappointed in Scarlett Undercover. I was expecting a fun mystery with a teenage private eye, but everything is kind of jumbled and all over the place. It was certainly a quick read, and I enjoyed learning more about Islam, but overall I'm left more puzzled than entertained. Scarlett is our fifteen year old PI, and she's just taken on a case where the client's older brother has been acting oddly, especially after his best friend supposedly committed suicide. After a bit of snooping, Scarlett sees a familiar symbol carved over and over in his door, but she can't quite place where she's seen it before.Scarlett Undercover started off good. I love family secrets, so I really liked when Scarlett realizes that her current case is linked to her father's murder. She ends up learning ancient family secrets as well as some Islamic mythology, which may not actually be myth. And that is where the story started to lose me. Is this Paranormal? I honestly have no idea. Suddenly there's djinn and magical rings and portals to other worlds. This was interesting, but also felt really out of place because it came out of nowhere. Then when Scarlett needs help, a character can no longer interfere because of mystical reasons (how convenient). And there's a pile of slaughtered dogs, which was not okay and I don't understand why it even happened.By the end, I was just confused by Scarlett Undercover. Other than wondering if this was meant to be a Paranormal Mystery, and why it was necessary to kill a bunch of dogs, I also couldn't figure out how Scarlett got her own office. She's fifteen! Surely that isn't legal? And I honestly don't believe that her sister would rent it for her. I can definitely suspend belief for Scarlett being a PI (Veronica Mars, hellooo!) but the fact that she has her own office away from home where clients come to her was quite unbelievable.I really wanted to like Scarlett Undercover, but the plot was a bit of a mess. It starts out as investigating odd teen behavior, then moves to family secrets, then it's suddenly paranormal. There's also this completely undeveloped romance just to have some kissing. But those dead dogs! WTF?!

But Jennifer Latham graduated from my high school, and, as we all know, when one person from your hometown makes good, it's like we all succeeded, too. And I remember Jennifer well. She lived a few streets away from me and I always thought she looked like the teenage empress of Orchard Park whenever I'd see her out walking her exotic Basenji dog (regal girl, regal dog. They made an impression). And I knew Jennifer was super-smart. I think she might have even been valedictorian of her class. But that doesn't automatically mean that she'd be a good story teller, right? But she IS! Wow! This story is wild! There are real heroes, real bad guys, real danger, and a couple of age-appropriate, tingly smooches. This book has it all!I thought the supernatural and Muslim elements of the story were fascinating. The Solomon's knot story isn't one I'd heard of before (though, when I looked up a picture of Solomon's knot, I'd certainly seen that design before. I'd just never wondered about it), so the story felt completely fresh and new to me.I adored the George Fagin segment. It's an important part of the story, so I won't give anything away. A previous commenter said she wanted Scarlett's sister, Reem, to get her own book. And I think that would be great. But if Ms. Latham is going to turn this into a series (and that would be so cool!), maybe George Fagin could head up the prequel. My only (minor) complaint is that there are a lot of unusual names here, and I found myself getting lost a couple of times. Like, 'wait - who's The General?' 'who's Mook again?' I suspect that it's not a problem with the story-telling, but rather just my ADD brain skimming over all the back-story parts, and jumping ahead to the action scenes. It happens all the time. :)So yeah. This book is really, really neat. I'm so happy I read it, and, as a parent, I can recommend this for middle-schoolers, and even advanced elementary-school readers. There isn't anything in this book that would make concerned parents feel that the wrong thing was being celebrated. Scarlett is a tough-but-vulnerable, American, likeable kid. Readers are going to love her.

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. Fun Mystery/Thriller with Great Female PI By Ink and Page Scarlett certainly doesn’t believe in anything otherworldly. Her latest client is only nine years old and worried about her brother, Oliver, and his possible connection to his friend’s death. But, according to police, that was a clear suicide and there’s no reason to look any deeper. Scarlett, though, isn’t convinced that this is just another sad teen statistic, especially when she starts getting tailed right after meeting Oliver. Coincidence, or is something more sinister at play? Her father murdered and her mother dead from cancer, it’s just Scarlett and her sister Reem. Scarlett graduated early from high school and Reem is a resident doctor at one of the harshest hospitals in Las Almas. They each are working their losses out in their own way, Scarlett solving problems as a PI and Reem by trying to heal at the hospital. Scarlett has drifted further from her Muslim heritage while Reem has started wearing a hijab. As Scarlett begins to look deeper into the mystery, everything seems to be pointing back to her family; there’s an old bottle that has been passed down through her father’s family; a design that looks very familiar; hints from various acquaintances and clues that she discovers while delving deeper into her own history. How can she be connected to this seemingly unconnected crime? She carries a blackjack, studies Muay Thai and won’t let herself rest until she solves a mystery. But what if that mystery can’t possibly be true and, if it were, could have consequences that not only involve her family, but the world? She will need more than belief or strength to see this one to the end. She’ll need faith. And a little smartassery wouldn’t hurt. What a dark, fun and suspenseful story. Written through the clear eyes of the sometimes sarcastic and always tough Scarlett, she is a refreshing take on an old standard. Her Muslim upbringing adds history, rules and language that make her so very three-dimensional and add a different flavor to a genre that can sometimes be tired and same ol’ same ol’.I am curious about the author chosing to write about characters who are Muslim. I think culture can be a highly-charged topic to some (especially when bound together with religious beliefs), and when someone who isn’t of that culture (I am totally assuming here, since I could find nothing about it online) writes about it, it can be especially upsetting to adherents if they think the author did not portray some aspect correctly. That philosophical pondering aside, I thoroughly enjoyed the historical elements in the story which made everything seem so real. This is a solid first book.Scarlett Undercover by Jennifer Latham was published today, May 19, 2015 by Little, Brown Books for Young Readers. Good Morning to Me!, by Lita Judge

From School Library Journal PreS-Gr 1—All of her friends are sleeping, but Beatrix the parrot is wide awake. She knows she is supposed to be quiet and tries to talk softly but a loud "GOOD MORNING, MOUSE!" wakes up the snoozing rodent. This sets off a lively commotion as Beatrix wakes up Kitty and is thrilled to see Gracie the dog and the goldfish. Beatrix's excitement leads to her being chased by the cat, riding on the dog, and falling in the fish bowl. Watercolor and pencil illustrations vary between full-page spreads and comic book—style frames. Soft colors contrast the bright green and yellow of Beatrix the parrot. VERDICT Children who have a hard time with indoor voices will relate to Beatrix's enthusiastic nature.—Sarah Polace, Cuyahoga Public Library System, OH

Review "Beatrix's irrepressible character stands out as brightly as her green and gold plumage....Young children who share Beatrix's morning hyperactivity, or even just her flexible relationship with the idea of an "indoor voice," will certainly relate…as will, without doubt, their parents. A few hearty squawks and a brisk bit of exercise—what better way to start the day?" (Kirkus Reviews, March 2015)* "Beatrix the parrot: threat or menace? She really is a loving bird; in fact, she’s constantly telling the other animals in her cottage home that she loves them. But she’s so clueless and so loud—and doesn’t she ever sleep? It’s hard to be her friend and to keep her out of harm’s way, although Mouse certainly tries...a series of funny, often wordless misadventures and mishaps featuring a lead character whose energetic, blissfully obtuse personality is as vivid as her bright green feathers...it’s a lovely book: Judge (Born in the Wild) uses aqueous, shimmering blues for her environments so that the furs, feathers, and marvelous expressions of her cast pop. It also demands, in the best possible way, that readers slow down and pore over every picture. It’s easy to imagine the many warm, giggling interchanges that snuggling with this book will inspire." (Publishers Weekly, March 2015, STARRED REVIEW)"All of her friends are sleeping, but Beatrix the parrot is wide awake.... Watercolor and pencil illustrations vary between full-page spreads and comic book–style frames. Soft colors contrast the bright green and yellow of Beatrix the parrot. VERDICT: Children who have a hard time with indoor voices will relate to Beatrix’s enthusiastic nature." (School Library Journal, May 2015)"Against a soft blue reflecting the morning’s quiet and stillness, Beatrix the parrot’s bright green feathers stand out as sharp and clear as her morning energy.... Watercolor and pencil illustrations create energy that builds with every page turn as Beatrix’s enthusiasm for morning fun leads to more and more trouble...the crisp text consists almost completely of dialogue among the animals, and their strong personalities come through in their expressive eyes and body language. Beatrix is at once incredibly frustrating and undeniably lovable, and no creature—or reader—can resist her for long, making this tribute to rude awakenings a joy to read and share." (Horn Book Magazine, July/August 2015)

By Bob Walch If you have a child who loves to create a lot of noise, especially in the morning, this picture book will strike a positive chord. The parrot here loves to awaken all the other animals in the household but she is in for a surprise when they indicate this is not always the way THEY want to start their day.Cute illustrations and a humorous story will delight young readers so enjoy the fun as you read GOOD MORNING TO ME!

0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. This begs to be read in funny voices By D. Jennings Beatrix the parrot LOVES all the other pets in the house.....but she can be a rather annoying playmate. Her loud voice startles the other animals (cat, dog, goldfish, and mouse, who seems to be in charge of the household and Beatrix's physical well-being) and her attempts to play with the other animals put her in danger, at which time mouse comes to the rescue. Not a long or complex story but my audience seems to enjoy it told in an approximation of a parrot voice. The text on the jacket suggests that it is "perfect for children who can't contain their exuberance and might have a little bit of trouble using indoor voices" but I don't think this needs to be turned into a LESSON, it's just a cute story. We liked the illustrations as well, brightly colored and sweetly rendered.

Public humiliation and self doubt can really put a damper on your spirits! She’s worked so hard at turning herself around it’s hard to make others see it too. Will Chelly be able to find a boyfriend? Or will she be stuck with the single life? This was a great addition to the series and I cannot wait to find out what happens with Brooklyn next!

Super Fly: The World's Smallest Superhero!, by Todd H. Doodler

From School Library Journal K-Gr 2—Eugene Flystein is a nerdy, unathletic fourth-grade fly living at the edge of the town dump in Stinkopolis. In his spare time, Eugene makes strange inventions that children love, like a homework robot, and plays with his younger sister, Elle. He even makes friends with a flea in the flea circus, Fred. But most of all, he stays out of the way of Cornelius Cockroach, a bully and his arch nemesis. That is, until Cornelius is transformed by one of Eugene's inventions, the Ultimo 6-9000, into a supervillain—Crazy Cockroach. Soon Stinkopolis is being terrorized and robbed by the cockroach, and Eugene must transform himself into Super Fly to save the dump. The drawings and plot in Super Fly might appeal to older readers, but the writing style is definitely for the younger set, possibly even to be included in easy reader collections. Fans of "Captain Underpants" (Scholastic, 2002) will enjoy the potty humor and simple black-and-white illustrations. The only downside is the very basic sentence structure, which would make read-alouds awkward. VERDICT Recommended for elementary and early chapter book collections.—Shalini Miskelly, St. Benedict Catholic School, Seattle, WA

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. Creative and amusing. By Kimberly V Super Fly: The World's Smallest Superhero! by Todd H. Doodler is a fun, little story filled with enough poop jokes to amuse children at the early-elementary school level. It is a complete story, but I suspect from the ending that there will be more Super Fly adventures to come. I thought that the book was creative and clever enough that parents who read the book to or with their child will find it amusing as well.

3 of 3 people found the following review helpful. Fun in the capital....... By Anime Lover Ash and Eco are enjoying some time alone in the capital. However why is Eco acting so shy towards him. Later that night at dinner Ash recieves a rare honor, and a "friendly" warning from the Emperor about Sylvie. But a dream about a dead dragon wakes Sylvie, sending her to the local dragon mausoleum, where she meets her sister, Sir Gwain, and Adavoka learning that the remains of several dragons are missing. The next day is the masked ball before the annual conference of countries and everyone is getting ready, but a misunderstanding with Eco and Prim has her running into the garden and into an ambush. When Ash loses contact with her he tries to confront Milgauss who is at the ball, but he needs to help the princess as well. What is the Empires dark plan, and how can Ash put a stop to it before he loses his steed forever? This is probably the turning point of the series as certain plans are put into effect, but who truly is running the show? What is the secret of Milgauss and why is he fixated on one young dragon? These are starting to come to light in this volume and we will see what is next.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Another Exciting Entry in the Dragonar Series By Ryokosha The story continues as Eco and Ash are enjoying downtime, which is only interrupted, much to Eco's annoyance when Ash is summoned to meet the Emperor. While with at the castle, a misunderstanding drivers Eco into a trap and the hands of people who have dark plans for her and the kingdom. Ending on a cliffhanger has left me eagerly awaiting volume 7.Overall, Dragonar is one of the rare series these days I have found where plot points are not forgotten for several volumes only to be reintroduced in a manner the "fourth wall" almost has to be broken to bring them back up. Though not completely rare, To me this focus on the plot makes Dragonar a strong story with a cohesive and exciting manner of telling it and a series well worth following.

From the different animals that lay eggs, to the different foods animals eat, to even the different materials and goods animals produce.I always find the Terry Treetop books to be great and easy reads for bedtime after a long day, and they also provide great material to start discussions with my kids about the world around them.I may have received this title either for free or at a discount in exchange for a fair and unbiased review. The opinions expressed above are my own regardless of how the title was acquired.

Because Multiple Sclerosis is a disease that someone will live with for years, or even decades, it is important for family and friends to understand what the person is going through and learn how to give support. Multiple Sclerosis used to be feared because it was so unpredictable and doctors knew very little in how to treat it. Thanks to good research and great doctors, people can live with MS even though there is not a cure yet. The Electrifying Story of Multiple Sclerosis is written to help people understand what it feels like to have the disease, how to help, and what symptoms people feel.

3 of 3 people found the following review helpful. The author does an excellent job of explaining the disease in a simple way By Randi I have a friend with MS, and before reading this book I understood very little about it. The author does an excellent job of explaining the disease in a simple way, both through definition, explaining what the disease does, and listing the symptoms through eye catching illustrations of each one. She also tells how MS is treated and what it feels like to live with it. I love that she donates a portion of the proceeds to those affected by MS and ends the book with suggestions on how to help someone who has it.All in all it was an excellent read. I gave it four stars instead of five because of a grammar error - in the segment about the bladder the illustration reads, "But YOUR empty" instead of "But YOU'RE empty." Pet peeve of mine.... That aside it was an excellent read that helps even a child understand a bit more about this disease. Well done.I received a complementary copy of the book in exchange for an honest review.

I would imagine that this would be particularly helpful for younger people as it has a section in the back about how to put your By abby As someone who has MS the information in the book was not new to me. However, this book lays out a lot of things that most people wonder about regarding the disease. It is explained in very simple terms and should be helpful for both adults and children. I would imagine that this would be particularly helpful for younger people as it has a section in the back about how to put yourself in situations to 'simulate' what certain symptoms could feel like so that you have a better understanding of some of the challenges people with MS may experience. Though a medical article may be more effective for some people, they can be taxing and difficult to get through for many. This book is easy to read and understand, plus there are illustrations which should help with a younger audience.

Fantastic Resource By Allie Storm's Literary Forecast [...]**I received a free copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.**Filled with informational, colorful, and easy to understand visuals, this book by Vanita Oelschlager explains what it is like to have multiple sclerosis. It even includes 'experiments' for people unaffected by the disease to try so they can better understand some of the symptoms. As someone with a family member who has multiple sclerosis, I gained insight into some of the daily struggles and uncertainties MS can bring. This book would be excellent for a child who has a loved one with MS.I read this book easily in one sitting. A child around second or third grade could easily read it on his or her own; however, it would also be appropriate for those younger with an adult to help them understand.Overall, this book is a valuable tool and I would highly recommend it to anybody wanting to learn more about multiple sclerosis.

Anna, Banana, and the Friendship Split, by Anica Mrose Rissi

From School Library Journal Gr 3–5—The first two titles in a new chapter book series by debut author Anica Rissi feature third grader Anna, her dog Banana, and her two best friends, Sadie and Isabel. In Anna, Banana and the Friendship Split, readers meet Anna and Sadie as the two are celebrating Anna's birthday. Anna hopes to use her birthday wish on a trip to Water World, but Sadie encourages her to wish for a pony. When Anna opens a present from her grandparents, she finds a glittery pony necklace inside—her wish came true! Yet Sadie grabs the necklace, and proceeds to wear it. Anna and Sadie begin to argue and Sadie storms off—with Anna's new necklace. The rest of the book follows Anna as she alternates between being mad and feeling sad at losing Sadie as her best friend. The simple plot picks up very quickly in order to provide a resolution. In Anna, Banana and the Monkey in the Middle, Anna and Sadie have apologized and gained a mutual new best friend in Isabel. Anna is excited to go on the class trip to the zoo, but trouble quickly brews again as both Sadie and Isabel want to sit with Anna on the bus. Anna begins to realize that having two best friends can be hard. The characters begin to come into their own more in this second title, with Anna's family providing her with a strong support system and logic to help realize that "having two best friends doesn't mean cutting yourself in half to hand out two smaller pieces." Black-and-white interior artwork is included throughout both books. Fans Sara Pennypacker's Clementine, Hilary McKay's Lulu, and Anna Branford's Violet Mackerel will enjoy meeting Anna and her friends. VERDICT Consider adding in libraries where simple chapter book series are popular.—Lisa Kropp, Suffolk Cooperative Library System, Bellport, NY

3 of 3 people found the following review helpful. A Good Read! By Jan McClarty I have been a teacher and parent for almost 40 years. When my 7 year old granddaughter got this book, I flipped through the pages and decided to read it myself. Along with my granddaughter, I couldn't put it down. Like so many girls in grade school, Anna faced a new challenge in maintaining friendships every day. Friends can flip at the drop of a hat! What do you do? Anna does some things wrong and some things right. I found myself laughing out loud on some pages and aligning myself with various characters on others. This is a book all girls will enjoy, and there is some good food for thought and discussion.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Rings true By Dorine White It is Anna's birthday and her best friend Sadie is over to celebrate. When Anna goes to blow out her candles and make a wish, Sadie convinces her to wish for a pony. Going against what she personally wants, Anna listens to Sadie, and later is surprised when she opens up a present with a beautiful pony necklace. Her wish came true!Instead of being happy for Anna, Sadie turns mean and wants to steal Anna's dog, Banana. When that doesn't work, she takes Anna's new necklace claiming it is half hers anyway because she came up with the wish in the first place. Anna doesn't know what to do, and tries her very best to make up with Sadie, even saying sorry when things weren't her fault. Nothing seems to work until Anna decides to stiffen her spine and be mean right back. It makes her feel awful, but it works, and Sadie realizes she still wants to be friends. My Thoughts-This story rang true to me. I can remember well the angst of childhood and the cat fights between us young girls. This book is dead on as it addresses childhood behavior. Sadie's behavior is awful and poor Anna will do anything to win back her best friend. As an adult I couldn't help but think Anna would be better off without Sadie, but for a child, they would only feel as if they'd done something wrong and try to fix things.I like that the parents and teacher are portrayed as trusted and intelligent individuals. The school setting will be familiar to children as well as the different events that take place. My only issue was that we never find out why Sadie is suddenly so mean and hateful. There is no satisfaction for the reader about Sadie. Anna just thinks that thinks are A Okay as soon as Sadie starts playing with her again. For that reason, I'm giving this read 4 stars!

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. Adorable! Fun and sweet By Denise Jaden Adorable! Fun and sweet, and a great reminder of how difficult best friendships can be. Anna is my favorite kind of character--kind and thoughtful, with a deep down strength she didn't know she had. I can't wait for the next book!
