Still hard to wrap my head around the fact that she was taken in such a horrific violent way. Tragic, so fuckn tragic. Karen will burn eternally in hell, still not enough for what she has done, the wake of sadness are anguish she has created

By Jennifer Bryant This is a great read to get a closer look at Missy, I have heard Karen talk about this horrible crime over and over..In my opinion she is trying to tarnish Missy..and even if what she said is true, kids will be kids and teenagers will definitely be teenagers...everything Missy did was normal for her age...however Murder is NOT NORMAL...so regardless of what Karen says...she's wrong..regardless of what Missy did...Karen is wrong...and the fact that she doesn't admit to this makes me wanna puke....Keep up the good fight Shavaun....I love your strength, integrity, compassion and determination...I live in Virginia..so I can't help in Cali..but if I could, I would be fighting the good fight with all of you #crimeshouldntpay

Just the sheer innocence of that time in our lives. It was heartbreaking to read, yet, made me feel she is okay now and things are going to turn around. MISSY'S LAW WILL happen as it should!!!!

Nimona, by Noelle Stevenson

From School Library Journal Gr 7 Up—This celebrated webcomic, a mash-up of medieval culture with modern science and technology, is now available in print. Lord Ballister Blackheart, a knight, has assumed the role of a supervillain in order to expose the nefarious schemes of the kingdom's front organization, The Institute of Law Enforcement. The kingdom's champion is Lord Blackheart's nemesis and former best friend, Sir Ambrose Goldenloin. Blackheart's prickly relationship with Goldenloin further explores the limits of their friendship. Enter the title character, a brash young shapeshifter who doggedly follows Ballister until he agrees to take her on as a sidekick. Nimona's skills as a shapeshifter up the ante in the ongoing rivalry between Ambrose and Ballister. Despite her anger management issues, the teen becomes Ballister's invaluable ally and together they form an alliance of mutual trust and dependence. Action scenes dominate as Nimona shifts with Hulk-like ferocity from frightful creatures such as a fire-breathing dragon to a docile cat or a timid child. Dialogue is fresh and witty with an abundance of clever lines. A complementary color palette of Blackheart's muddy browns contrasts with Goldenloin's fresh transparent yellow-greens. Both color schemes highlight Nimona's intense reds. Readers will note subtle visual differences in webcomic images. The print edition includes an exclusive epilogue not available online. At its core, Nimona is a story of rescue. Each of the main characters rescue allies, friendships, the Kingdom, and ultimately, themselves. VERDICT A vibrant solo work from "Lumberjanes" (Boom!) cocreator.—Barbara M. Moon, Suffolk Cooperative Library System, Bellport, NY

And Nimona is a protagonist to both love and fear.” (The Horn Book)“Over the course of the collected Nimona, it’s possible to watch artist Noelle Stevenson blossom from a student to a superstar.” (NPR.org)“Nimona, with all her flaws, breaks away completely from what women are allowed to be in popular fiction.” (Vanity Fair)“Graphic novel fans will finish the book in a gallop and then want to start right back at the first page.” (Bulletin of the Center for Children’s Books (starred review))“Awesome and adorable.” (Ryan North, author of Dinosaur Comics)“Funny and vibrant, with wonderful energy in Stevenson’s illustrations and a wicked wit in her storytelling.” (Slate)“Those of you who haven’t read Nimona yet are lucky, because you can buy the fantasy comic in book form instead of waiting for Noelle to post an update twice a week. Seriously, that wait was always excruciating.” (Bustle.com)

A fresh take on knights vs dragons By Johanna Draper Carlson Noelle Stevenson’s Nimona debuted as a webcomic before being reworked into a graphic novel. I find that it reads better — or maybe I’m better able to keep up with it — as a collection. Pages have been revised and a new epilogue added for this edition.Although it’s set among knights and battles, it’s a very modern-feeling story, because Nimona is a very young and current character. She’s a shape-changing teenager with all the attitude and lack of respect for authority that goes along with that. Stevenson’s art does a terrific job of capturing those feelings visually, without needing to spell out for us everyone’s motivations textually. We meet her as she meets one-armed supervillain Lord Ballister Blackheart. She’s a fangirl, and in spite of her abilities, Blackheart is a bit suspicious of her youth, enthusiasm, and drive. He’s also got a grudge against Sir Ambrosius Goldenloin. The two were young heroes together before their battle led to his loss of limb.Nimona’s fascinating because Stevenson doesn’t make her stereotypically feminine. She doesn’t feel the need to prominently signify “this is a girl”, which is a refreshing take on these kinds of comic projects. In fact, the first thing we see Nimona turn into is not a cat or something fluffy or cute, but a shark. She’s also fond of being a dragon. (When she does turn into a cat, it’s to jump on someone’s head.)There’s plenty of adventure and action here, portrayed in a way you’ve likely never seen before. Stevenson also humanizes the traditional bad guy type by giving him significant motivation and personal ethics, while Nimona doesn’t seem to take much of anything seriously. I figured her sympathies are as changeable as her physical state; plus, as we learn more about her background, she’s got good reason to ignore her past.As the story continues, some items appear that will be familiar to readers, from documents revealing a secret conspiracy by a reputable source of authority to distrust of financial institutions. There’s a pending epidemic and discussions of how to reconcile science and magic. What appeals to me most, though, is the little family Nimona and Blackheart make and the fatherly way he treats her, particularly on board game night. (The publisher provided a review copy. By Alpha Reader ‘Nimona’ is the debut graphic novel, written and illustrated by Noelle Stevenson … it was actually a free online web comic that Stevenson started in 2012, and doubled as her senior thesis at the Maryland Institute College of Art. But Stevenson has risen to fame in the comic-book world, for illustrating the insanely popular (and fantastic) series ‘Lumberjanes’, and her affiliation with Rainbow Rowell’s ‘Fangirl’ cover-art and subsequent fan-art.I came to my Noelle Stevenson appreciation very late in the game, as I had to eagerly await the much buzzed-about Volume 1 of ‘Lumberjanes’ earlier this year. But as soon as I knew I had to make my way to ‘Lumberjanes’, I started following Stevenson on Twitter and was instantly in love with her sense of humour and subversive, feminist commentary – particularly in relation to the wonderful world of comics. So when it was announced that a web comic which helped garner Noelle Stevenson her now considerable fan-base was going to be published as a graphic novel, you better believe I jumped for joy! And it’s not hard to see how ‘Nimona’ helped launch Stevenson’s career – as a funny “deadpan epic” that feels a little bit like ‘Monty Python and the Holy Grail’ with more heart, symbolism and gadgetry. The book opens with “villain” Lord Ballister Blackheart meeting his new self-imposed sidekick, a young shapeshifter girl named Nimona. In the beginning the comic has a lot of fun with turning old tropes on their head – wherein the “villain” has ethics, the female sidekick is more blood-thirsty and conniving than her mastermind boss and though it’s set in a medieval-looking era, there’s a great blend of science and technology alongside jousting bouts and knights in shining armour. But then Stevenson starts to really expand the world-building, and challenge readers with her subversive storytelling. We learn that Lord Ballister Blackheart has a more complicated back-story with shades of grey, while the local hero – Ambrosius Goldenloin (best name, ever!) – has more darkness to him that first meets the eye and a far more complex and tender relationship to Ballister.Nimona, meanwhile, is more than the tough, smart-aleck sidekick … she leaves breadcrumbs to her true story, and it’s far more heartbreaking than anyone – especially Ballister – ever presumes.‘Nimona’ is brilliant and unique – there’s really nothing else quite like it, and now that I’ve had the pleasure of reading it I can see what a gift Noelle Stevenson is to the wonderful world of comics … particularly for this female-friendly, smart graphic novel that has a lot of appeal for younger audiences. The universe of ‘Nimona’ is particularly clever, as a contemporary-medieval setting where fantasy and science-fiction sit side-by-side and can each be seen as magical in certain circumstances. This medieval mash-up also means that Stevenson explores political tyranny playing out on the serfdom populace, which opens the story up for a lot of big concept ideas – particularly in the battle of good and evil. You need only be following Stevenson for a few days on Twitter to know that she’s big on feminism, equality and diversity – and all three are in abundance in this book. In particular, Ballister and Goldenloin have hints of a romantic back-story, which is teased out beautifully (these two have so many fans – check out Tumblr to get an idea of how beloved they are!). Ballister and Goldenloin also feel like a nod to realised slash-fiction … like Stevenson took two story archetypes (the villain and the hero) and actually gave them the complicated attraction that fans often clamour for and explore in fanfiction (hello, Draco & Harry!).‘Nimona’ is such a treat, and I encourage anyone who was once like me – totally in the dark about Stevenson’s sheer awesomeness – to make this book a ‘must-buy’! It’s funny, smart, subversive and challenges just about every adventure trope you can think of – a truly great book for monster girls and boys alike.

A deft balance of comedy and drama, magic and science, and heroism and villainy By Kenya Starflight Stories centered on villains seem to be in vogue right now -- "Wicked," "Maleficent," "Hannibal," "Breaking Bad," and countless others. People seem to want to see a classic story retold from the antagonist's point of view, or just see a main character who isn't a hero and is a flawed and even "evil" character themselves... or if not evil, at least more gray than black or white. Perhaps this says something about our society today, but I have to admit that I enjoy the occasional villain-centered book or movie, especially when the story presents its characters as realistic, flawed characters instead of black-and-white heroes and villains. That's one of the main reasons I picked up "Nimona," despite not having read the webcomic and only having heard of Noelle Stevenson in passing.I'm glad I gave it a shot. "Nimona" is a complex and epic story, balancing magic and science, humor and drama, and light and dark in a deft manner. And it has a unique art style that improves greatly over the course of the graphic novel. The titular Nimona is a girl with shapeshifting abilities, who latches onto the kingdom's resident supervillain, one Ballister Blackheart, as his sidekick. At first put off by the girl's overeager tendencies and willingness to spread mayhem, Blackheart finds himself warming up to his new charge, and recruits her for his ongoing quest -- to unmask the kingdom's hero, Sir Ambrosia Goldenloin, and the Institute of Law Enforcement and Heroics he works for, and expose them as the scumbags he knows them to be. But the Institute isn't going down without a fight, and both Ballister and Nimona's pasts will come back to haunt them -- Ballister and Ambrosia have shared history together, and Nimona is hiding dark secrets that could result in the destruction of everything both Ballister and Ambrosia have worked so hard to achieve...I have to admit that, at first, the art style of this book turned me off. Everything had a sketchy, little-kid-drawing feel to it, not quite fitting a fantasy comic in my mind. But as I read further the style grew on me, and I enjoyed the artist's attention to detail and quirky character designs. It helped that as the comic progressed I could see the art style gradually improve going from sketchy to slick and professional. Humans remain very stylized, with tiny hands and angular faces (with a few exceptions), but backgrounds, props, and especially animals become more realistic. It's very satisfying to see an artist improve their game as they go, instead of stagnating. The characters are probably this comic's strongest feature, however, and it was a joy to get to know them, even if a few of them fall into clichés. By now stories with "heroic villians" are common enough that most people know the tropes of "misunderstood villain" and "dumb foppish hero" by now, but Ballister and Ambrosia are fun enough characters that I never felt that they were just stereotypes of the tropes. Nimona is a complex and sympathetic character as well -- while she can be diabolically funny and has a bloodthirsty streak, she also has a vulnerable side, and unraveling the secrets of her character and past makes for a fascinating story in itself. Minor characters are enjoyable as well, from the cold and diabolical director of the Institute to the eccentric absent-minded scientist Meredith. (Yes, I said scientist... more on that later.)The story of the comic isn't terribly new -- evil organization masquerading as good, spunky character with a dark past, hero and villain with a shared history and broken friendship, etc. -- but Noelle Stevenson makes it fun to read, partly by centering the story on the sidekick and partly by giving us a unique fantasy world that deftly straddles the line between medieval and modern-day. Science and magic exist side by side -- indeed, the aforementioned Meredith focuses her studies on reconciling science and magic together -- with soldiers using both swords and guns, people possessing video-phones and TV screens, and a substance called jaderoot being treated like this universe's version of radioactive material. Magic and science don't always mix well in fiction, but here it works.Reading this graphic novel makes me want to check out the webcomic it's based on, if only to see what, if any, differences exist, and if Nimona's story has been continued at all. At any rate, Noelle Stevenson is a writer and artist to watch, and I hope to check out more of her work. If you like a villain-centric story, or like your fantasy with a comic and/or modern-day twist, give "Nimona" a shot. You won't be disappointed.

After the End, by Amy Plum

From School Library Journal Gr 8 Up—Raised to believe she was one of the few survivors of a nuclear war, 17-year-old Juneau is part of a tiny community of refugees in Alaska, isolated from the rest of the world. Juneau is training to be the next Sage and strengthening her mystical abilities. When her entire clan is kidnapped, she sets out to find them. She soon learns that men are searching for her, and she struggles to stay one step ahead of them while acclimating to modern civilization for the first time. In a parallel narrative, Miles, the son of one of Juneau's pursuers, decides to track her himself, hoping to impress his father. The fast-paced plot, rife with mystery, successfully moves the story forward. The initial setting of Juneau's camp is fully realized and portrayed in vivid detail. She is a tough, loyal, and smart protagonist and thoroughly developed while Miles is more two-dimensional. A romance develops between them, but some teens may question Juneau's interest in Miles, who is egocentric and has few redeeming qualities. Some plot devices feel contrived, straining readers' abilities to suspend disbelief, and the number of conveniently fortuitous coincidences may raise an eyebrow or two. Ultimately, however, the unique premise, strong protagonist, and action-packed story redeem the work. Fans of postapocalyptic fiction will enjoy this unusual not-quite-dystopian novel with a dose of corporate espionage. And the cliff-hanger ending will leave them eager for future installments.—Julie Hanson, Chicago Public Library

From Booklist Juneau has grown up off the grid in a hunter-gatherer colony at the base of Denali in Alaska, convinced that she and her clan are the last civilized survivors of World War III. As she is out hunting one day, she sees a helicopter and returns to camp as quickly as she can. But upon her arrival, she finds her entire clan missing, including her powerful mentor, Whit. Juneau’s clan is notable not only for their methodical survivalist lifestyle but also for their mystical connection with a natural force called the Yara, which grants them superior powers of perception across space and time. Juneau is particularly gifted with powers of perception, but her efforts to locate and rescue her clan are complicated by two separate factions in hot pursuit. Told in short chapters alternating between Juneau’s point of view and that of the skeptical Miles, who will stop at nothing to find her, this fast-paced adventure novel from the author of If I Should Die (2013) pulses with magic, romance, and one humdinger of a cliff-hanger. Grades 8-11. --Paula Willey

I don't know if ATE wanted to encompass different genres like sci-fi, thriller, fantasy, and what I'm thinking as faux dystopian. If you've seen or heard of M. Night Shymalan's movie THE VILLAGE, this book is like that, only instead of one major twist, AFTER THE END has several. Unfortunately, by the time the twists meet up and everything starts to make sense, I was confused by the logic leaps and the number of coincidences which kept cropping up.Juneau is a young woman raised and living in the Alaskan wild by her father and a close group of friends. She has abilities no one aside from her clan understands. Miles is the progeny of a wealthy man who is ignored for the most part, until he gets involved with his dad's plans to find a mysterious girl. These two teens meet and both their lives change. Each teen takes a turn narrating chapters.Author Amy Plum writes with fluidity that makes the book easy to get in to. But I'm not a big fan of dual narrators, and I think this novel should have been strictly Juneau's. Her story arc is so huge in scope that it needed more focus. Miles was more of a hurdle you have to jump over to get back to her. You can't really root for him when he knowingly gets involved to hunt Juneau out to get into his dad's good graces. I didn't get a feel for him until near the end of the book.MILD SPOILERS BELOW:There were too many coincidences. Juneau needs answers? No problem, she just finds the local homeless person (which I found very offensive), taps into powers, and they'll give her some. She gets hurt running away from some bad guys, and there's, coincidentally, a woman who appears who can help her with that too. Her abilities are strong in the beginning of the book, then conveniently go away, then come back when she really needs them. She doesn't use her abilities when she must. It's too tidy for my taste. The biggest pet peeve I have is that Juneau was born with a unique eye anomaly, a gold starburst. Everyone who is looking for her is on the lookout mostly for this anomaly...and she doesn't do anything to cover her eyes up. Buy some sunglasses, buy some colored contact lenses! If you are aware that your life is in danger because of this main reason, wouldn't you do something in your right mind to cover it up?END SPOILERSATE is in itself an anomaly to me. It didn't win me over, but it did manage to hook me into checking in on the next book. I will be looking for it at the library when it comes out though.

There's a beginning and middle, but no end in sight when it stops. A heads-up by Amazon or Audible or Ms. Plum that this was only part of a novel might have been nice before I bought it. There are some massive holes and some weak aspects of the story--Miles's motivation for searching out Juneau's in the first place is incredibly contrived--but it does have an engaging main character. Juneau is worth the price of admission. Just give me a whole book. When the next book comes out, I hope it has an ending, and the author doesn't soap opera us to death by just continuing on with a never ending story.

By Jenna Detrapani AFTER THE END by Amy Plum is an road-trip survival story that’s a far cry from her previous paranormal romance series. It’s a definite step up as far as originality and adventure – and it left this reader impressed even up to the author’s signature cliffhanger ending.I have to admit, I had not even read the synopsis of AFTER THE END before diving in. I knew nothing about what was to come. Heck, I’d gone so far to assume that it was going to be a typical post-apocalyptic adventure story – which I enjoy and was the main reason for wanting to read it. Boy, was I wrong, well, kind of… I am probably one of very few people who will be caught completely off guard by the first major “twist” (although now that I’ve read the synopsis, I see this was not a twist at all – yeah, yeah). It delivered a “woah” moment that I don’t think very many other readers will experience. Haha. I’m so silly. In hindsight I am so, so glad I did not read about the fact that nothing in the beginning of the book is real. In fact, I really wish that they had left that detail out of the synopsis altogether so that other readers could experience the same shock. That aside, the revelation about the world Juneau has always known really isn’t the point of the story. What’s important is everything that happens after that. (Huh. Maybe this is the “After” that the title is implying.) I love, love, loved seeing Juneau’s natural world collide with that of our modern society. A major geek moment for me was reading about the landmarks she encounters in the city of Seattle. I adore Seattle and Juneau visits some locations that I am highly familiar with.Juneau’s background is explored in great depth within AFTER THE END. Juneau is quite the enigma and I loved discovering things about her as the story progressed. She is strong, resourceful, someone I could easily be friends with… She makes decisions based on their benefit toward her cause and she is not one to react without thinking. Though some things about her past and her “people” and their ways are still a bit of a mystery, you learn so much about them within only a few hundred pages. Yes, there is a paranormal element behind her and her people, but by the end of the book I bet many readers will wonder if such a culture doesn’t actually exist. The attention to detail is that superb within this book.On the other end of the spectrum – the “modern” side – is the male lead, Miles. Since the synopsis doesn’t say anything about him at this time, neither will I. But I will say that Miles is one of those characters that I absolutely despised at the beginning of the novel but grew to love. Early on, Miles’ maturity level left me wanting. But by the end of the book – especially at the end of the book – I found myself cheering him on. I think that says something about character progression. While his personality at the beginning made his perspective difficult to swallow, I cannot say the same as the story went on. Eventually I found myself enjoying both views equally, both Miles’ and Juneau’s.It’s kind of funny. Almost immediately after Juneau and Miles came together in the story, my mind instantly compared them to Dallas and Leeloo in The Fifth Element. She is the mysterious girl with an unusual past and he is her disgruntled guide. Her naivety and innocence matches that of Leeloo. His likability and attitude was at the same level as Dallas. As their journey continues, the two characters clash and connect with each other in memorable ways. It also helps that the book is told in the alternating perspectives of both Juneau and Miles. We get to see both sides of their story and things are unveiled as they each make their own discoveries and are put through trials both together and separately.I never found the pacing or the story faltering as I read. Road-trip novels and I tend to “click”, so I think AFTER THE END definitely had that in its favor. Another thing I should mention is that I began and completed this novel all in one sitting while making a long flight across the U.S. I gobbled up the pages as though they were a Thanksgiving feast, and when I finished I was left begging for seconds.A word of warning: AFTER THE END has a killer cliffhanger.Just be prepared…Pros:- What a step up in both originality, characters and writing for this author! This second series is sure to outshine her first!- Juneau is a strong and resourceful character that I can easily get behind.- The dual perspectives maintain balance the scales between the two sides, allowing the reader to more easily see both sides of the story.Cons:- The cliffhanger. Pure. Torture.- I kind of wanted to understand the modern side of the story more at this point. But this is likely to come. Juneau’s culture is so perfectly fleshed out, I was easily able to excuse the lack of world building provided for the modern side.- Miles was a difficult character to follow in the beginning.AFTER THE END will already have a legion of readers begging to devour its story thanks to the author’s previous release. Plus, new readers will appreciate the more accessible story and characters. There is plenty of romance and paranormal elements to satisfy existing fans and plenty of adventure to satisfy the new. I am more of a fan of the author after reading this book and I eagerly await what is to come.Plot: 9Characters: 9Setting: 8Pacing: 9Style: 9Grade: 94

How he has to change his work because of his farting problem. Then he meets Charlie and befriends with him. the story then moves on swiftly. Good one!

I'm hooked and I'm not even a kid :D By Jam Diaz This is a new take on children’s books and one that even an adult, like myself, could actually enjoy reading. Although, there were minimal typos observed, this book is still of good quality and one that I would recommend in a heartbeat! What’s best about this book is that you don’t have to actually know the game MINECRAFT to have a better grasp of the story. I think Funny Comics used those characters for marketing strategy only since this is the “current hype” amongst kids nowadays, which is the target audience of this book, by the way. I so love the idea that despite the book’s way of keeping up with the trend, the core values of making a children’s book was preserved, hence a moral lesson was still very much evident. There are many depicted in this book actually. First, embracing your “weirdness” and using it as an advantage on your part. Just because you’re different doesn’t mean you don’t belong. Secondly, always make sure to help a friend if you have the ability to do so. In real life it can be just a simple talk or just a pat on the back, but the main point is, always make your presence is felt especially in times when a friend is in need. Lastly, never be afraid to stand up for something that you know is wrong especially if it is already causing harm to someone may it be a friend, a family member, or just some stranger across the street. Over all, this book is a SUPER THUMBS UP! And if there’s one thing I can only suggest is to further enhance the VISUALS so that more kids would enjoy this while learning at the same time.

Each and all of them are well written, along with humor and fun. A page turner for young readers. I prefer using this "humorful comic" as a bedtime story beause they work great at times like that. A strong plot that supports what the story is based on. Very impressed of how good this book is. Recommended for ages 6 - 12. Kids in that age range would be pleased to read this fun comic by "Funny Comics". Ages over 12 wouldn't mind taking 10 minutes reading this enjoyable comic. I don't have anything else to say. I should wrap up here but, don't forget to download this book right now!:):):):):):)

Part memoir, part spiritual exploration, part inspiring stories, Expect the Unexpected provides wisdom, knowledge, insight, and support for communicating with and tapping into spiritual realms we do not fully understand.Bill Philipps had the kind of childhood that seems too tragic to be true — drug-addicted parents, parental kidnapping, homelessness. At age fourteen, he watched his mother die. Two days later she appeared to him, letting him know she was spiritually alive. From then on, spirits “knocked on his door.” He tried to ignore them. He wanted to be “normal.” But as he pursued his singing gift at the San Francisco Conservatory of Music, his psychic gift pressed for a hearing. As Philipps began giving readings as a psychic medium, and witnessed the comfort the spirits offered, he came to accept and honor his abilities. With testimonies from a breadth of people — everyday men and women, celebrities, business leaders, and one-time skeptics who had attitudes nothing short of cynical — Expect the Unexpected is an honest firsthand account of how spirits communicate with Philipps, why he believes they chose him to do this, and how he works with them to ultimately convey their messages. As Philipps confirms, it is normal to ask questions about what happens to our loved ones after death and to hope to reconnect with them. The inspiring personal stories of those he has helped illustrate what can happen when we seek connection and answers. He offers insight and suggestions to help you ask for and receive signs with or without a medium and shows why he is convinced that readings always contain the possibility for love, peace, healing, and hope.

Expect the Unexpected: Bringing Peace, Healing, and Hope from the Other Side, by Bill Philipps

Review “Bill Philipps’s book is like a spiritual spa day. It is as peaceful and powerful as the man himself. You will learn so much about the spirits and yourself.”— Dorothy Lucey, entertainment reporter and former cohost of Good Day LA“Expect the Unexpected offers an honestly refreshing glimpse into the world of mediumship and Spirit. Bill Philipps’s old soul shines through as he enlightens and empowers us all to tap into our own intuitive gifts and spiritual awareness.”— Rebecca Rosen, bestselling author of Spirited and Awaken the Spirit Within“Bill Philipps is not only a gifted psychic medium but one of the most sincere and genuine young men I have ever met. He brings healing and hope where there is loss and pain. He truly cares for people and comforts them with his compassion and the warmth of his heart.”— Tanya Brown, author of Finding Peace Amid the Chaos“‘Always be prepared for surprises’ is a lesson I have learned over two decades of conducting scientific research on mediumship and life after death. Expect the Unexpected expresses this truth in a clear and convincing manner. This beautifully written book is educational and enlightening — well worth reading for believers and skeptics alike.”— Gary E. Schwartz, PhD, professor, University of Arizona, and author of The Afterlife Experiments and The Sacred Promise“To read Bill Philipps’s writing is to be held by his spirit. He is a force of goodwill on this earth, and he heals hearts. His stories teach us that mediums are real and that passing on is not scary but simply a change in location, to a location that is only accessible with an open heart. I am grateful for Bill Philipps. I am grateful for his book.”— Christine Woods, actress, Hello Ladies and The Walking Dead“This book not only gives evidence of life after death but also gives a very accurate view of the struggles a pure psychic medium goes through. Bill Philipps is real, down-to-earth, humble, and obviously very gifted, and I’m so grateful he wrote this book. Another hundred pages would still be too short.”— Echo Bodine, author of Echoes of the Soul and The Gift“This book captures the wonder of communication with the afterlife, a wonder felt not just by the deceased’s families and friends, but also by the mediums themselves. Bill Philipps’s insiders’ accounts, written with energy and conviction, demonstrate again and again the maxim of professional mediumship: the dead are always right.”— Julia Assante, PhD, author of The Last Frontier“Philipps writes with humility, respect, and compassion. It’s clear that his intent is to help, not to impress. He speaks, not from a pedestal, but toe-to-toe with the people who seek his help....They will find this book to be a lighthouse on the path to healing and serenity.”— Anna Jedrziewski, Retailing Insight

Doe I have never attended any kind of reading of this type. Having lost my father at a young age, it was comforting to learn all of the positive aspects in having loved ones pass to the other side, knowing they are watching over us as we live our daily lives. Bill's book confirms my father has communicated with our family in small ways and coincidences that encourage us that he is with us and watching over us. Bill's book is an easy read, flows naturally from chapter to chapter.

This book is for ANYONE who believes & for those who do not believe there is something beyond our physical existence here on earth. Put aside all of your pre-conceived ideas of what you've been taught, heard, etc.. And open up your heart, being, spirit, soul, whatever you call it.Many people try to over analyze our purpose in this physical life. We love here on earth & that love NEVER dies.Bill Philipps THANK YOU for being YOU & opening up your life! All of the good that will come out of your book will be so healing & give so many people peace & hope. This is a MUST read for everyone.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. MORE than I Expected! By Forbes Robbins Blair Even better than I thought it would be!I expected Bill Philipps to discuss many fascinating stories about his clients and his own life in regard to his ability. And he does; the stories are riveting and worth the price of the book. What I didn't expect was for him to talk about how his gift works. For instance, does a psychic medium actually see and hear spirits? Or is it a mental impression? He also has some terrific advice (and a wonderful meditation!) about how to connect with your own abilities, though he does admit that what he has is a gift, and very few are likely to reach his level of ability.I love how the book is presented. He begins right away with a story about his mother, which I won't spoil because it's touching and gripping. The book is interlaced with stories not from Bill, but from his clients in their own words about readings he has done.I was also happy to hear him discuss some of the fakes out there. He tells you what to look out for and discusses his own experience with one of them. Additionally, he boldly mentions how some religious folks disapprove of his gift and his response about that. So if you are on the fence about whether his kind of gift is good or bad, this is a MUST READ.I saw Bill on an episode of Dr. Phil, and he was touted as a leader among the new generation of psychic mediums. What I love about the way he comes across is his striking humility and his non-cheeseyness (is that a word?). This guys the real deal and his work will stump the naysayers and debunkers. This book is a good start in that direction. I can't imagine anyone not enjoying Expect the Unexpected.

She allows readers a personal look into what it means to be biracial. She doesn't ask for pity or as she talks about "play the race card," but presents, as the title says, a look into one girl's stories. She does so in a way that is impossible to leave unchanged. She reveals an intimate look at one girl's self-discovery and journey to loving herself. For so young an author, her writing is polished and fresh. This is a book about race like no other book on race you've read before. This book is nothing short of inspiring and pure brilliance. This book is only 99 cents on Amazon and incredibly short. It's one I would recommend everybody read. Do yourself a favor and go buy it on Amazon.I was skeptical, but I have no regrets about reading this one. They say good writing allows you to make connections to your own life, change the way you view things, and leaves you thinking about it long after you turn the last page. This book did all of that and more.Just as the author promised, there are no neat, tidy conclusions. No answers of how society can fix the racism that plagues us. No foolish, impractical solutions. It's merely one girl's experiences; but it's one girl's experiences that prove to be impactful and insightful.I always have a hard time rating non-fiction, but I'll give this 5 stars because of all the emotions I felt while reading.Warnings: No violence, sexual innuendos, or swearing. Perfect for all readers.Love,Danica Page

As a grandmother of biracial grandchildren I am always interested in hearing about the experiences of children growing up in the U.S. with one parent from Africa. Some of the authors thoughts reminds me of the book "Americanah". Well worth the read.

Hamilton This personal reflection brings to life the concept of mirco-aggressions in a way that is often missing. I wish this was required reading for anyone who tries to claim that racism is dead! Thank you so much for being vulnerable with us by sharing your journey.

I’ve been married for 13 years and I thought I was doing pretty well, relative to everyone else, anyway. After reading Husband on Purpose (I had the opportunity to reading an early version of the manuscript), I realized how much I had been falling short…how much more I could and should be doing. The best part is that Conrad shares very simple action steps to begin making progress toward- better communication with my wife- better self-discipline- personal growth (upon which to build interpersonal harmony)- spousal mind-reading and- a more fulfilling marriage and life.Husband on Purpose gets my highest recommendation

By Shudder Fly I've got to hand it to the author, he did a great job of entertaining me all the way through. This might be my third book on the subject and the other two were very drole and went on and on and on....(see what I did there). These previous books just rehashed the same information but with different words.I was pleasantly surprised that this author didn't do that. Instead he kept it fun and at a good tempo, while also cover things I hadn't really come across but fully understand as being critical.

What Makes Me Special!, by Elizabeth McKinney

About the Author Elizabeth is a mother of two and a registered nurse with a diversified career that ranges from Cardiac and Post Anesthesia Care Nursing to being a Clinical Research Nurse at the Joslin Diabetes Center in Boston, Massachusetts. As she entered the profession of motherhood, she decided to pursue another angle of nursing with a focus on Childbirth Education and Hypnosis. Elizabeth became a Lamaze Certified Childbirth Educator and Clinical Hypnotherapist to empower and teach women and families about the labor process and the importance of relaxation. Throughout her life and career, there has been one constant, and that is writing poetry. Whenever Elizabeth was faced with a challenge or had difficulty expressing her feelings, she would write a poem. What Makes Me Special was created after Lillian was given an assignment at school. It was called Special Me and she had a week to show her class all the things that made her special. Lillian has many wonderful attributes, and several were the same as other kindergarteners in her class. It was then that Elizabeth shared with Lillian that she believed what makes a person different from everyone else is, in fact, what makes them special. Thus, this flapping good tale was created about a girl, written by the mom who loves her.

George feels as if he’s going through life with his eyes half closed—but sometimes that’s how you bump into the best surprises George has been in love with Julie since they were twelve years old. For six years, they’ve barely taken a step without each other, and and every time George imagines his future, he sees Julie in it. She’ll be a doctor and they’ll stay in their small town and always be able to see the bright lights of New York City across the Hudson River. The two of them are so close, they’re like two parts of the same person—only whole when they’re together.   But when Julie suddenly calls off their relationship, everything George thought was certain starts to crumble away. In desperation, he starts exchanging online messages with a stranger, someone right across the river in the big city. On the Internet, George discovers, you can be anyone you want—or you can be exactly who you are, even if you’re still finding out just who that is.

City Light, by Harry Mazer

From Publishers Weekly The breakup of a six-year relationship sends George Farina searching for his own identity; Mazer's use of a first-person narrator manages to be both humorous and moving. Ages 12-up. Copyright 1989 Reed Business Information, Inc.

From School Library Journal Grade 6-9 Seventeen-year-old George is madly in love with Julie, and when she tells him that the romance is over, he can't handle it. He hounds Julie day and night to change her mind. His harassment serves only to annoy the girland readers, for it goes on for too long. Eventually, however, he meets a new girl through a computer bulletin board. Rosemary thinks that George is a girl at first, and there are several chapters in which all the confusion and George's attempts to keep up the pretense (even to dressing in drag) threaten to sink the entire novel. Eventually, George and Rosemary launch their romance, George gets a start in furniture refinishing, and it begins to look as if he has outgrown his idiot stage. George is not always likable, but he is recognizable. There is a well-handled sub-plot that has George at odds with his successful hairdresser father over George's career choice. Mazer falters slightly in City Light , but it should do little damage to his reputation as a very good storyteller. Robert E. Unsworth, Scarsdale Junior High School, N.Y.Copyright 1988 Reed Business Information, Inc.

"City" will light up your heart By A Customer Harry Mazer's tale of young love is one of the most realistic stories I have read that actually captures the true pain of a break-up. The character's in this book are life like and and you can't help getting caught up in them. This book was written for teenagers, but is a quick, enjoyable read for adults too. You won't be disappointed.

Retta Barre has faced a dizzying prairie storm, a stubborn buffalo, and a murderous Indian twice. But that's nothing compared to what happens when her family is left alone in the middle of the prairie. One life-threatening danger after another and Retta's in the middle of them all. Some might think she's just a plain looking 12-year-old from Ohio. With her buckskin dress, moccasins, and sun-tanned face, others see an Indian girl. And some of her friends consider her a heroine. But after Retta encounters horse thieves, prairie pirates, and an army troop, she'll definitely be the undisputed Princess of the Prairie.
