7 of 8 people found the following review helpful. The worst there is By P. J. Brown It's too late for me, but please let me implore you, if you see dog poop on the sidewalk, don't step on it. I was intrigued by the Death Of Wolverine arc and its aftermath, so much that I broke my trade paperback only policy to pick up this book in issue form, which I haven't done for any comic in nearly a decade. It had an interesting assembly of rogues and anti-heroes carrying on the legacy of Wolverine, and I was anticipating great interactions and character development, especially in regards to a newly weakened Daken and post Axis inverted Sabretooth. That didn't happen. Instead, you have an inconsistent creative team whose lack of cohesion is reflected in the story with mistakes running from forgivable No-prize candidates to out and out glaring canonical errors. There is no character development worth mentioning in spite of new and established characters in this book. It's just a total waste.I feel this book was utter filler, with any and all good bits hoarded for Secret Wars. I have been a lifelong Marvel fan, but this is just some of the worst comics published under their banner since the 1990s. Skip this and don't fall for it like I did.

Wells Collecting: Wolverines #1-5The new Wolverines series that spins out of Death of Wolverine gets off to a bit of a rocky start. Readers without a bit of back story will be befuddled by the all-star cast that has been shoehorned into acting as a team. In Death of Wolverine: The Logan Legacy X-23, Daken, Sabretooth, Mystique, and Lady Deathstrike are extorted into working together to retrieve Wolverine's Adamantium-encased corpse. Meanwhile in Death of Wolverine: The Weapon X Program a team is forged from failed experiments that attempted to create Wolverine's powers. These failed experiments are going to die unless they can recover Wolverine's body.The Wolverines series forces these teams to work together to steal Wolverine. Writer Charles Soule is tasked with combining a team of basically unknown characters with a team of well-established characters, but unfortunately Soule doesn't use the space to showcase the interesting and established characters nor does he use the space to make the new cast members memorable. The result is a missed opportunity. Characters like Mystique and Lady Deathstrike or Sabretooth and X-23 have great stories and should be intriguing. Mystique is always up to something! Instead these all-stars were milquetoast. Similarly the new characters are uniformly forgettable with the exception of Shogun.Even the artwork is forgettable with two exceptions. Juan Doe's Fantomelle introduction is visually interesting, and the Punisher heist scenes were the most suspenseful in the entire novel. Also Jonathan Marks work at the end of the collection is quite stunning. Marks' artwork heightens the distorted reality of Sinister's fortress.Fantomelle and Culpepper are the characters that end up stealing (appropriately) the show, and they are the single biggest reason that I would recommend this collection to readers. The collection builds steam toward the end, and the combination of Marks artwork and the arrival of the X-Men had me wanting to read more. The story continues in Wolverines Vol. 2: Claw, Blade and Fang .

By Matt Anderson There is one reason I read this collection, and it has nothing to do with Wolverine.SPOILERS:Ben Reilly appears in this book. The clone of Peter Parker. The original Scarlet Spider. But not just one Ben Reilly. Tons of them. For some reason, Mr. Sinister cloned the clone of Spider-Man, and he now has an army of Ben Reillys. But why? We don't find out in volume. Also, we don't know if any of these guys is the original Ben Reilly or just a clone of him. What if one is the real one? There was an interesting line where one of the many Ben Reillys said, "I'm Spider-Man. I think." This indicates that the version of Ben Reilly that Sinister cloned was from the "Sensational Spider-Man" era (a point when Ben Reilly transitioned away from the Scarlet Spider moniker, and took on the mantle of Spider-Man. Or, it indicates that Sinister abducted the Sensational Spider-Man and replaced him with a clone. Then, that clone eventually sacrificed himself in order to save Peter Parker. This is best case scenario. I want the original Ben Reilly to be alive and well, and this is the first time in almost 20 years that any writer has even hinted that this might be possible. Cast Off is smart, witty, detailed, historical, warm-hearted, and near impossible to put down. The cast of characters is truly a collection of colorful and varied participants in this heroine adventure story. I am waiting a few days before diving in and reading it again! Wonderful read!

Non-stop adventure By Janet Hamilton Summary: When Petra de Winter’s wealthy father threatens to kill her, she runs away and hides on board a ship sailing from the Netherlands to the East Indies. Bram Broen, the mixed-race son of the ship’s carpenter discovers her and helps her stay hidden. She disguises herself as a boy which turns out to be fortunate when she is eventually discovered. After surviving a keel hauling, she is put to work as the surgeon’s assistant, using skills she learned back home in Holland. Told in alternating voices, Petra and Bram relate a story that includes piracy, mutiny, and lots of adventure. Grades 5 and up.Pros: While more of a middle school book, good fifth grade readers will enjoy this non-stop adventure. It would also make an exciting read aloud.Cons: Pretty much every aspect of life for anyone living in the 17th century who wasn’t wealthy, white, and male.

It's a fresh plot with twists and turns along the way. I've read the whole book ten times over the summer and keep it in my backpack so on the bus I can pull out a great historical fiction!LUV IT

It also explained a lot what happened in the first two books. It is well written and it follows the original story line. I can't wait until the next book comes out in spring 2013. I will get that one also and then I will be able to reread them when I want to.

About the Author Erin Hagar writes fiction and nonfiction for children and teens. Her manuscript There Was a War On (Charlesbridge Press, 2016) was awarded first prize in the picture book category in the Hunger Mountain Literary Journal’s youth writing competition. She teaches for the Center for Talented Youth program at Johns Hopkins University and has worked helping educators design curricula and refine their teaching strategies. She lives in Baltimore with her husband and two children. She has not yet trussed a chicken on the style Julia Child’s, but makes a mean molasses cookie.As a child Joanna Gorham traveled all over the world. She found a love for food, exploring, and storytelling. Now she tells her own stories through her watercolors for children’s books and family magazines. She recently won two of Applied Arts Magazine’s Young Blood Awards, for the brightest up-and-coming talents. You can find her painting in a little red cottage on an island in the Pacific Northwest.

As a kid, I so remember loving biographies, but they never looked this cool. The text is absolutely excellent.

By Katie Schmidt Phenomenal book for children - Ms. Hagar's child-friendly writing style made this an enjoyable biography for all ages to read. While other biographies can seems dry and difficult to connect with for kids, this text is filled with meaningful and funny anecdotes that capture the life of Julia Child in a way that children can enjoy and understand.

The illustrations are stunning, bleak, and beautiful. The message is one of personal responsibility and redemption - share it with your child as soon as you can find a copy. Will some kids find the pictures a little scary? Will some kids get a little wide-eyed and worried? Yes. Guess what? Kids are ALLOWED to feel that way - it's how they learn to deal with these very real emotions. Share it, then talk about it. Lovely, lovely book.

Freya and the Dragon Egg is a delightful story of a young girl's journey to the world of vikings. Freya is a wonderful protagonist, smart and sassy and often misunderstood by those she loves most. She is tasked with protecting a special object and this leads her to a world she had only read about in history books.Along the way she encounters the mysterious Erik, and together they navigate their way through this adventure.As a former fifth grade teacher, I would definitely recommend this book to my students. It is appropriate for high level 4th/5th graders as well as middle school students.I look forward to seeing more from this exciting author and eagerly await the sequel to this intriguing novel.

By Pirate2240 For anyone who loves the Diary of a Wimpy Kid series, but with a Christian twist, then you MUST pick up a copy of The Desperate Diva Diaries from Angie Spady. Written in similar format of the Diaries of the Wimpy Kid series, these are written from the perspective of Catie Conrad and her life in Middle School. Struggling with the same issues our teens face from secret crushes, bullying by the popular girls, struggling with school and life with her brother Jeremy who she refers to as Germ, the pest. it provides an outlet that teens can feel comfortable with.This is the second novel, Catie Conrad: How to Become the Most Unpopular Girl in Middle School from Angie Spady. You don't have to read the first one to jump into this one and gain a true sense of appreciation from the things Catie struggles with. It's almost like a Christian version of Lizzie Maguire! Catie's help comes from her BFF, Sophie who is super smart and part of the Academic Team, who offers biblical advice when Catie has come to the end of her rope. While being far from perfect herself, Sophie struggles to deal with Miranda Maroni, the popular girl at school who never has anything nice to say to anyone who isn't in her click.Even though Catie dreams of one day being a fashion diva through her many sketches of outfits and designing things from shirts to purses, she is your typical teen who has to deal with so many things on a daily basis. Her biggest challenge in this book is dealing with her younger brother, his pet skunk Rosie and just when she thinks it can't get any worse, he takes on the responsibility for caring for Dylan's bearded dragon when his family leaves to China to bring back their adopted sister. Now Catie has to deal with more pets than she can handle including her brother. Is there anyone who can understand?I received The Desperate Diva Diaries: How To Become The Most Unpopular Girl in Middle School by Angie Spady compliments of Shelton Interactive and B and H Publishers for my honest review. I did not receive any monetary compensation for a favorable review and the opinions included here are strictly my own. I LOVE this series and have enjoyed reading them. I can see how young teens would benefit from sharing in the real life situations that Catie experiences, from failing a quiz, dealing with bullies, and trying to make a positive impression in her school and at home. This one even addresses volunteering and contributing to supporting the Compassion International program of helping out kids with monetary donations, but will the kids be able to part with their allowances? You'll have to read this one and see how it all turns out. The best thing I love about this is the Scripture references that Catie refers to when life is more than she can handle and how she attempts to live it out through her friends and family. Well worth a 5 out of 5 stars in my opinion.

Catie Conrad: How to Become the Most (un)Popular Girl in Middle School by Angie Spady brings back Catie, her best friend Sophie, her secret crush Josh, brother Jeremy, and nemesis Miranda Maroni. The book, illustrated by Channing Everidge, is written in the style of a young girl's diary, complete with all of the drawings and sketches of future fashion designer, Catie.Miranda is up to her old tricks of making Catie look and feel bad about herself by accusing Catie of cheating on a test in the one subject she is good in AND by continuing to make fun of Catie's fashion designs. Everything Catie does is twisted by Miranda, and it's not easy to keep turning the other cheek and not finding a way to get even. With Valentine's day quickly approaching, the stress levels are higher than ever. Will Josh believe Miranda's lies? Catie is also trying to be supportive of Sophie and the Scholar Bowl team but what is the best way for her to help?Of course, things are zany at home too. As if her brother and his pet skunk, Rosie, weren't enough, Jeremy AKA "The Germ" is pet-sitting a friend's bearded dragon!! Then, just when things could not get worse---Jeremy breaks his leg! Guess who is put in charge of taking care of the pets and helping her brother?This second book is just as much fun to read as the first one. I am way past those traumatic middle school years, so I read these with a touch of amusement interspersed with my own memories of the drama that goes with being that age. But, I am also very impressed with the message that goes out to young girls, especially Christians, that we all face problems, but we have a God always available to turn to in times of need. The use of Scripture and the counsel of parents and support of friends who share the same values and beliefs are presented in a way that does not appear to be a lesson.
