Ten zany birds have a party in a tree, singing and dancing. Five have stripes, three have spots, and one has purple polka dots. They're all having fun, but one by one, they become distracted.

One is frightened by a loud plane. One gets hungry. One wants to race and another needs a bath. Only one stays to sing in the tree, but who will it be?

Ten Zany Birds is a fun, beautifully illustrated picture book. As parents and teachers read, children are introduced to counting and basic subtraction skills. Whenever a bird leaves, the number of striped, spotted, and polka-dotted birds changes, teaching the application of simple classification rules.

Whimsical and entertaining, Sherry Ellis's tale of ten silly, distractible little birds is an excellent choice for both prereader storybook time and early readers.

Zany Early Learner Basic Concepts Set to Bouncy Rhythm By Jewel Sample, award-winning author of Flying Hugs and Kisses I received a copy of this picture book by the author in exchange for an honest review.Sherry Ellis opens a singing and dancing bird story with lovely language, a sense of bouncy rhythm, and natural curiosity to participate in the repetition of two sentences throughout the book. Together the vivid whimsical watercolor illustrations and narration invites the reader to pay attention to counting backward, simple math skills of subtraction and addition; recognizing eleven different colors common to the early learner, while offering something a little more complex like comparing line and circle differences. It is not hard to wonder which color of bird will fly away. One page seemed confusing when a yellow-faced reddish-brown cat is labeled gray, yet opens discussion more about the illustrations than the words on the page.I found the book to be entertaining, as well as one that is fun to read from the back page for another story of counting frontwards and animal fun.TEN ZANY BIRDS is a great resource for the home or school library of children between the ages of four through eight.

By Deanie Humphrys-Dunne Sherry Ellis is a gifted children's author and her new book, "Ten Zany Birds" is more evidence of that. This time, children, parents, grandparents, and teachers will delight in the adorable rhymes and cute, colorful illustrations. The little birds party and dance along until various things happen to lure them off the branch where they're busy dancing and partying. It's a fun way to introduce small children to the concept of subtraction. I highly recommend it. Hats off to Ms. Ellis for another outstanding book.Review by children's author, Deanie Humphrys-Dunne

A Review By A Writer and Her Grandson By Nancy Julien Kopp MONDAY, NOVEMBER 30, 2015Ten Zany Birds--A Review25605484 Thanksgiving has come and gone and November is about to slam the door. On the final day of this eleventh month, I'd like to do a book review.Georgia author, Sherry Ellis, has self-published Ten Zany Birds, a rhyming picture book which the author describes as "a feathered festival." The story itself is an old concept--begin with ten and one by one, the zany birds fly away leaving only one in the end. As a child, I remember a rhyming book about ten little Indians--sure to be labeled politically incorrect in present times. My children learned a rhyming jingle about ten little monkeys jumping on a bed. One fell off....you get the picture.Sherry Ellis has brought the old concept up to date while introducing counting and basic subtraction skills. Colors and patterns (stripes, spotted, and polka-dotted) also come into play in this picture book. Humor and whimsy float from page to page as the silly and easily distracted birds fly away, one by one.The book would be fun for parent, grandparent or teacher to read to a pre-school child. Early readers would delight in the rhyming and fun throughout this book. as well as the illustrations.Charu Jain, an artist who lives in India, illustrated the book. Her interpretation of the zany birds adds much to the author's story. The vibrant colors and whimsical expressions on the birds creates more joy when reading this book.Being a writer myself and a word person, I would have loved to see some explanation of the key word in the title--zany. It's definitely not a word most pre-schoolers are acquainted with. Perhaps the story itself transfers the meaning of the word to the children. But this is a counting and basic subtraction concept book so perhaps I ask too much. I would love to know how Ms Ellis picked the word zany to include in the title and repeated rhyme within the book itself.I asked my nine-year-old grandson to read the book when he was here on Thanksgiving Day. I told him it was for children much younger than he is but that I'd like his opinion to help me review the book. Cole read the book and then sat down at the computer to write his review. I've listed the things he liked below with my additions in red:It shows what they (birds) look like.I like when they fly awayThey are all different colorsThe birds look funnyThe birds always look like they are having funI like the last pageIt was a good bookHe did say he didn't like that it said the same thing on almost every page. We talked about the importance of using repetition when young children are learning to read and that children his age didn't need to have that repeating process anymore.I think I agree with my grandson. It was a good book. Gift-giving time is looming close. If you have little ones on your list, consider Ten Zany Birds by Sherry Ellis.

In 2014, the arrest and detention of thousands of desperate young migrants at the southwest border of the United States exposed the U.S. government's shadowy juvenile detention system, which had escaped public scrutiny for years. This book tells the story of six Central American and Mexican children who are driven from their homes by violence and deprivation, and who embark alone, risking their lives, on the perilous journey north. They suffer coercive arrests at the U.S. border, then land in detention, only to be caught up in the battle to obtain legal status. Whose Child Am I? looks inside a vast, labyrinthine system by documenting in detail the experiences of these youths, beginning with their arrest by immigration authorities, their subsequent placement in federal detention, followed by their appearance in deportation proceedings and release from custody, and, finally, ending with their struggle to build new lives in the United States. This book shows how the U.S. government got into the business of detaining children and what we can learn from this troubled history.

Whose Child Am I?: Unaccompanied, Undocumented Children in U.S. Immigration Custody, by Susan J. Terrio

Review "This volume is neither conservative nor liberal. It is a balanced presentation of the system, pro and con, for handling undocumented children who come to this country on their own or because they are brought here. . . . Incredibly readable and insightful. An exceptional book that does real justice to an enormously important topic. . . . Highly Recommended."--K. E. Murphy,"CHOICE connect" (01/01/2016)

From the Inside Flap "How did the US government get into the business of detaining thousands of unaccompanied children every year? How did this become the dominant paradigm for dealing with very young and vulnerable migrants fleeing poverty and violence in Central America?  These questions are urgent and topical as the US confronts massive inflows of unaccompanied child migrants along its southern border. With masterful and accessible prose, Susan Terrio answers these questions. She combines poignant attention to human detail with an impressive grasp of relevant history, law, policy and practice.  Essential reading for anyone interested in one of the US's most urgent contemporary human rights challenges."–Jacqueline Bhabha, Professor of the Practice of Health and Human Rights, Harvard University. “Whose Child Am I? is a comprehensive, provocative, and richly detailed ethnography of the experiences of unaccompanied minors as they traverse the US immigration system. Drawing on hundreds of hours of observations and in-depth interviews with youth and immigration authorities, Terrio helps us to understand both the youths’ struggles and the realities of detention centers, where humanitarian interests collide with a punitive enforcement approach. This unique and beautifully written analysis is a “must read” for anyone concerned about children traveling alone to escape violence and devastating poverty in their homelands, and their experiences with the US immigration system.”–Marjorie S. Zatz, University of California, Merced "Susan Terrio spent three years gathering data and draws on a wide range of sources, including ethnographic work in and visits to federal facilities, attending conferences organized by nonprofits, observing immigration court hearings, and interviewing judges, advocates, and child migrants themselves.  It is rare to bring together these disparate sorts of material, so that is a contribution in and of itself.  The book will be essential reading for courses on immigration or on child immigrants."–Susan Bibler Coutin, Associate Dean, University of California, Irvine, author of Legalizing Moves: Salvadoran Immigrants’ Struggle for U.S. Residency

About the Author Susan J. Terrio is Professor of Anthropology at Georgetown University. She is author of Judging Mohammed: Juvenile Delinquency, Immigration, and Exclusion at the Paris Palace of Justice and Crafting the Culture and History of French Chocolate.

KK Harris truly believes that the strategy she came up with is the reason her daughter was more than prepared for such assessments. KK Harris decided to write 10 Steps To Get Your Child into A Top School simply because she knows she's not the only mother wanting a great education for her child. She was an outsider but now her daughter is attending a top school and her future is looking very bright.

At times, I wished I could reach into the story and pull her out, protect her from the life she did not deserve. And the poor children, men like Elric should never be allowed to have children--ever.

Based on the "extra strength" in the title of this book, I was expecting it to have more challenging puzzles. I found only the last ~6-8 to actually be challenging. However, overall I did find this to require more thought than some of the other books such as Pocket Posh Logic which I also tried.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. This is a great geo adventure that will help young students learn about the Earth's landforms and geological features ... By Deb A beautiful mountain range loomed in the background of the family campground. A boy and his mother sat on a log, discussing the natural world around them. He held a pair of binoculars, ready and waiting to take a closer look, while his mother pointed at something in the distance. What would they be able to see that would tell them about landforms they found on their map? "Earth has landforms everywhere: / special places people share. / Nature makes an awesome scene ... / up high, down low, and in between."Their map would tell them all about the jagged seacoast where the land nestled up next to the sea. It's a wonderful place where a little girl and a dog can run in the sand while sandpipers search for food in the incoming waves. They could learn about snowcapped mountains and their snowy peaks. Brrrrrr! If you take a close look at the map you can easily see that hills and plateaus have much different shapes than a mountain. The map inset shows four states in the Colorado Plateau, but just what is a plateau?"A plateau stretches miles long. / Its rocky structure makes it strong. / The land is raised and flat on top. / Desert plateaus can't grow a top." Around the world they can travel, exploring the different geological features it has to offer. A physical map can tell us all kinds of things about our Earth's landforms and geological features. Do you know what an archipelago is and how one is formed? Perhaps you've seen a depiction of the Hawaiian island chain. You learn all about how this chain was formed and much more in this fascinating book! This is a great geo adventure that will help young students learn about the Earth's landforms and geological features. This story in rhyme is an animated overview of our world as seen from both the eyes of children and adults enjoying its features. Each two-page spread has an inset that shows some aspect of the area being explored or discussed via the rhyme. For example, when discussing the hill where wilderness are seen sliding, we see a physical map in the inset. In the back matter are activities that include additional landform information, a matching activity, map skills information, and questions. In addition to the four pages of activities, there are free complementary activities on the publisher's website. This is an excellent read and discuss book for students in the homeschool or classroom setting.Accelerated Reader: 2.7Flesch-Kincaid: 2.0Lexile: 580LFountas and Pinnell: NThis book courtesy of the publisher.
