Together since fourth grade, Lily and Harper are BFFs who begin their freshman year in different schools. Lily has always been the outsider and Harper the popular one. When the year begins, their roles are reversed and each has difficulty navigating their changed status. Always unique, Lily wears fairy wings and marches to the beat of her own drum. At her new creative school, she immediately hits it off with the in-crowd, becoming a fashion trendsetter. Harper, usually the quintessential popular California girl, starts off her freshman year with detention and soon after becomes the star of an embarrassing viral video. At a time when the two girls need each other the most, they just can't connect. There are touching moments, and the dialogue feels genuine. However, secondary characters, with the notable exception of Lily's former and Harper's current love interest Tim, seem mostly two-dimensional, created to represent an archetype. Only the two best friends are fully formed. This creates a problem because the bulk of the action takes place when the two main characters are separated. As in most light friendship stories, the friends are somewhat unrealistically reunited in the end. 3 of 3 people found the following review helpful. I really wanted to love this one By caripao I really wanted to love this one. It sounds so fun! And I love stories about best friends! But, even though the reading experience was fun, I couldn't connect with A Tale of Two Besties.I think the issue really comes down to age. I'm too old for this story, which makes perfect sense since the demographic probably falls somewhere between middle to high schoolers. Also, the author loves to name drop---like every few sentences. I guess this might serve as a way to attach the novel to the new generation but I don't know if I enjoyed it. Honestly, I didn't always get what she was talking about (again, I'm old) so it annoyed me more often than not. One thing that I actually liked were the messages between Lily and Harper. They are quirky and remind me that there's nothing better than being your geeky self with your best friend. I love that this is a story about two female characters since there are so few available for younger teens. That being said, I'm a little sad that this didn't exist when I was in middle school. I think I would've liked it a lot more then.I think you should skip this one if you're over 16. However, if you have a little sister/cousin/etc or if you're about to start high school, this novel is definitely for you!

Rossi's 'A Tale of Two Besties' is such a funny, such a feel-good read By Gina Sophia Rossi's 'A Tale of Two Besties' is such a funny, such a feel-good read. It took me a total of two days to read it; I actually, PHYSICALLY couldn't put it down. The story of Harper and Lily reminded me so much of my teenhood/middle school experience with my BFF. This book is also just super fun to read —it's written in both linear and text message format, so it feels super immediate, like you're there with the girls. I would recommend this to anyone who wanted a sweet, funny read about two best friends growing up. Be prepared to feel some feelings! :)
