Guinea Pig Party, by Holly Surplice

From School Library Journal PreS-K-This perfectly paced counting book depicts a birthday scene exactly as young children see it. There are energetic guests, lots of commotion, fun, mishaps, gifts, treats, and the inevitable letdown when the party is over. But Surplice ends on a high note, when the main character "shuts his eyes and makes a wish," putting the whole celebration into play once more. Endearing guinea pigs are stand-ins for the youngest listeners, who will practice counting from ten to one and back again with this bright, cheerfully illustrated, and delightful romp.-Gloria Koster, West School, New Canaan, CTα(c) Copyright 2011. Library Journals LLC, a wholly owned subsidiary of Media Source, Inc. No redistribution permitted.

From Booklist “And Then There Were None” is the framework here, as 10 little guinea pigs meet a series of (nonfatal) mishaps at a birthday party, reducing their numbers all the way down to 1. The little animals are of different colors and varying hairiness and dress (one wears a tutu, another sports a cape, another brandishes a set of maracas, and so on), but they’re all endearingly tubby and duly party-hatted. The first spread sets the pattern: “Ten little guinea pigs, dancing in a line. / Bump! go the guinea pigs, and then there are . . .” The different phases of the party—pinning the tail on the donkey, eating cake, playing games, popping balloons—result in more and more party accidents. At book’s end, the remaining partyer makes a wish, and all the guinea pigs return, leading us back to the number 10. A lively and especially cute counting book. Preschool-Kindergarten. --Connie Fletcher

Review Comical, partying guinea pigs who encounter one mishap after another allow readers to count down from 10 to one.... Loaded with personality, the adorable rodents take the party by storm, suffering tummy aches, tantrums and balloon mishaps but, ultimately, celebrating their friendship... Countdown to the next rereading.—Kirkus Reviews

Party with the pigs and learn to count down By J.Prather What better way to learn how to count down from 10 to 1 than with a bunch of partying guinea pigs? This is a counting book that not only delivers the charm but also the educational benefits that can really turn a picture book from just okay to a solid investment for your child. We get to count down from 10 to 1 with our guinea pig friends, but not back up again. We do get back up to 10 again at the end as the last guinea pig shuts his eyes and wishes for all his friends to return. There's a nice number line on the final spread featuring all of the partying pigs. The text has a nice rhyme that is never forced or awkward, making this a natural for read aloud group sharing. The numbers are large, and each spread also highlights the number word. These guinea pigs are doing things like bouncing on pogo sticks, dancing in a conga line, and playing peek-a-boo. The illustrations are high energy, and with so many things to see you are sure to get lots of requests for repeat readings. The pigs are expressive, charming, mischievous and always easy to count. Sometimes you might have to look for a partial guinea pig bouncing off the page, but that just adds to the fun! This is a solid choice for anyone looking for a beginning counting book. The fun created in these pages by these partying pigs is sure to bring smiles to any youngster just learning their numbers.

By Richard and Liz A truly delightful, well-written and illustrated book that will teach that vital skill of being able to count down from ten at an early age. Ten guinea pigs are at a party. One by one, they drop out as something happens. For example, one eats too much, another bumps his nose and yet another floats away with a balloon etc.At the end, when there is only one guinea pig left he realizes that he is lonely and so makes a wish and the other nine reappear.Bright, cheerful and highly recommended for young children.

0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. you'll want more from this author/illustrator! By Deborah Sandford A very attractive book--love the colors! The occasion is a guinea pig pre-school birthday party. Told in rhyme and counting backwards, this book is pleasing to the eye and funny, full of mishaps little ones are wont to get into, from eating too much cake to playing with someone else's dolly. Great for storytime in front of a crowd, but you'll want to bring it home and take time enjoying the illustrations. The pages are sturdy so small hands can manipulate them without a rip--somebody had their thinking cap on!

Male midwife Mark Harris seeks to redress the balance with this new book, drawing on his decades of experience with couples as they make the transition to being new parents. Covering topics from massage to sex, and pain relief during labour to breastfeeding, this is a lively, honest and frank discussion of pregnancy and birth from a man’s point of view. About the Author "I am registered as a midwife and nurse. I love being around people, always have as long as I can remember; having five sisters and three brothers afforded me plenty of practice and now with five children of my own and four grandchildren (another on the way), I have lots of opportunity to indulge my people passion. The choices I have made in my professional life have been shaped by this gregarious inclination. I have trained and worked as a Nurse, Midwife, Teacher in Further Education, hypnotherapist, NLP trainer, out reach youth worker. I still work as a Midwife offering a birth education through a programme called, Birthing For Blokes (@Birthing4Blokes). Work and play often merge for me." Men, Love & Birth is Mark's first book. Whether or not you already have children. This is amazing info for your spouse if you are looking to have a wonderful birth experience. This will help communication between the two of you, teach him a few things about pregnancy and breastfeeding in general, and help him become a great advocate and side-kick for your birth. The author is a male midwife and he is also very funny at times! Now, the women aren't actually supposed to read it. But I wanted to make sure I agreed with the info I was about to share so I read a lot of it. It's fantastic! Larger print and very easy to read. Go for it!

The title of the conflict "The Vietnam War", doesn't totally encompass the impact it had on the region it consumed--Southeast Asia. In the 1960s and throughout the 70s, the much more powerful North Vietnamese Army took full advantage of Laos' weaker position by fueling the internal conflict within the landlocked country and gaining room for their troops to maneuver within Laos. During this time, and fearing that the communist propaganda would cross its border with Laos and spread unrest within, The Kingdom of Thailand agreed that the US military could use Thai air bases around the country to fight in defense of freedom and democracy. The Americans swarmed into the Thai Kingdom like migrating African bees, ultimately giving Thailand something magical to smile about, at least superficially. The social stratosphere of Thailand quickly adapted like only Thai culture can. Cities were erected around Thai Air Force Bases throughout the nation, solidifying the shaky foundation of shadow businesses that abound in Thailand and generate a large portion of the Thai GDP. One nation’s lust gave rise to the “shadow economy” as it temporarily pacified another nation’s greed. To supply the popular demand, entertainment venues opened and were thronged with lonely Tahaan Falaang , and “bar-girls” willingly came in waves to provide their services. Is it that people who are willing to sell their bodies have no dignity, no limits? Or is it the other way around--that the person willing to buy someone's body--has no dignity, and no limits? Before you come to any conclusions, allow me to tell you a short story… I am a result of the Vietnam War, actually—the "Secret War" in Laos--a bastard son of an American soldier stationed in Udon Thani during the decades-long Indochina conflict. When American soldiers moved into Udon Air Force Base, the promise of great opportunities and riches excited many impoverished villagers around the rural Isaan farmlands; long overlooked by the Thai government. My mother, a young woman at the time, embraced this chance to make money, and even dreamed of being married off to a rich Tahaan Falaang who would take her away from the misery of subsistence living—a poor rural Isaan woman’s fantasy that evaporated the moment the Americans packed up and went home. Many of the women pursuing a dream became pregnant. Out of guilt, some would abort, knowing that bearing a mixed-breed child would only bring disgrace and shame to her family. Yet, many children were given the chance of life, only to find their culture was not ready to accept them for who they were—children of God. In fact, a Thai term had to be invented just to describe such children—“loog-kruenk” or “half-breed”. Something like "half-blood" or “half-ghost-half-human”. Upon returning home, pregnant and abandoned, my mother hid her secret as long as she could, only to have it revealed through the noticeably different looking son born to her. He would never be confused with a typical Isaan farmer. Undereducated Isaan villagers did everything possible to lift my mother onto the stage of disgrace. With mounting pressure to survive in these rural lands, my mother did what many women in the same situation did—dropped me off at an orphanage where I witnessed the darker side of “Thai-ness”—and where I quickly learned how to conform to the system. It was a journey that shredded my spirit and buried me deep in despair. I had no choice but to reach out into the unknown, begging a comet to save me and praying to any invisible powers willing to listen to an orphan’s plea. Fate took me there. But a miracle brought me out…

By Karen Bennett Orphans of the Secret War is a terrific story based on the author’s real life experiences, but written as a fictional book. Told from his point of view, he captures the hell he went through from growing up as a half-breed in a poor village in Thailand where the majority of the people didn’t embrace him because he was different. It’s written in such a way as to capture all the important moments of his life … whether it was sad, hopeful, or horrific. As a child of an American pilot named “Charlie” he was forced into adoption by his mother to give him what she thought would be a better life. Nearly two decades later he was able to locate his mother, but he never did find his father, so that part of his heritage is still missing. It may have taken some time, but in the end he was grateful.

History books states what happened as a whole but not what an individual feel. "Orphans of a Secret War" dwells into the person itself. Being in a situation where we just read or see nowadays and is often times turned dramatic or glamorous for this generation, the author connects what happened to his life and share the truth to us readers. The painful truth of the war, the opportunities it presents, mud masquerading as green meadows being presented to the women, and it all gives to the children. This is not history but is history. No details of the war itself but a story of those in the sidelines which are mostly misunderstood or unknown. This book dwells on the "what to do" being in the middle and not "what happened" seeing the whole picture. The author completes war life where history books dare not relate.

The fantastic part of this book, though, is that it truly does come from the author's heart. Not only that but also from his experience. That, above all, is what made this book heartfelt and emotional.I could not help but cry in various places within this book. It's heartbreaking that this happened to many innocent children and even their own mothers who were only pursuing a dream in Vietnam. My own father was adopted, so from my father's experience I can understand why the author feels like a piece of him is missing. It goes to show that the real stories behind the war are not in the history books but through the eyes of the children who were born from the war.

Winn Cammy, Cindy and Chelsey are three adorable characters who take kids through this fun book and help them to learn their shapes. The illustrations are so cute and the story fun and interactive. A great way to help kids learn. The author and the illustrator did an amazing job making learning fun!

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. getting your kids started with shapes and having fun By Teri Dluznieski As a kids book, this is definitely geared more toward age 3, than age 7. I would like to see something a bit more interactive, like asking how many shapes they can find in a given picture, or break it down to how many red squares, how many blue etc… while maybe making some coloured-shapes easy to find, some medium and some “harder” to find. All in all, it is a cute book for a child’s introduction to basic shapes. The artwork is nice, the layout is easy to follow, and should appeal to young kids!

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Cute, but lacks more activities By Sanjin This is a cute book for very young kids who are discovering shapes around them. It says that it is meant for an age group of 3 – 7 years old, but I think that it would be boring for anyone older than 5.The drawings are well done, characters of three little girls are adorable, but it is a shame that it is very short. I know that it is for kids, but some more pictures, shapes and activities would be nice to see.Anyway, if you have a little kid, it is worth a try.

Unfortunately I don't feel like the potential is fully realized. The book is relatively short and i felt that the story would have benefited if it was longer (or even spread to another book). While all of the scenes felt 'complete' from a story perspective, what is lacking is the details. It almost feels like someone stripped everything from the book that wasn't key to plot progression. Major scenes/battles tended to feel rushed and could benefit from fleshing out. Information on the God was sparse. The story line with Shanis could of used fleshing out.Positives:+ Captivating story and characters+ Alot of new items/ideas were introduced in this story and they worked wellNegatives:- Not many complaints, the biggest being the shortness previously addressed.- Lack of map makes for some confusing reading at times. I kept getting confused on West/East references, and location of other countries.- Killing characters is OK, and can definitely be key to story progression and character growth. HOWEVER, i felt this was one of the areas that was glossed over in this book. More details at the time and more details on the impact these key deaths has would be welcome. For example: There was not a single mention of how Oskar felt about a certain death or how it affected him after the fact.- I would like to see character 'stumbles'. Shanis shouldn't make the 'right' decision every time.- Minor typos and " " misuse. As Lerryn charged into a battle he was called "Larris" once.

By JameyLynn The Gates of Iron is the third in the three part fantasy series The Absent Gods by David DeBord (aka David Wood). It is written for young adults, however everyone would enjoy the series. The group of 6 have gone separate directions. Khalyndryn gave her life for Shanis. Oskar has gone with a seeker to learn the ways of a saikur. Larris, Allyn, Hierm, and two others have gone to Archstone, Larris’ home. Shanis has stay with the clans to lead them. While Shanis is uniting the clans and leading them in fighting against invaders, Oskar is learning to use magic, fight, and other things as well as getting a girlfriend, Lizzie. Hierm is sent to search for the new king of Galdora. The friends finally meet up and unit to fight the Frostmarch, the invasion by the newly risen evil god Tichris, the Ice King, raised by dark magic and human sacrifice. The prophesy has lead all to believe that Shanis is the one to fight the Ice King using the Silver Serpent. This is a must read to conclude the tale of The Absent Gods. There are many great characters giving us great role models as well as those who show us how not to be.

Stevens After years of waiting for the trilogy's third book, readers discover how Shanis and the silver serpent will save Gameryah. Unlike the first two books, the typographical errors are minimal ( sometimes writing Aspen instead of Aspin and other obvious typos ) but the story overcomes the grammar. The story is enjoyable with just enough detail but the conclusion's details with Shanis, the silver serpent and the ice king are missing. Its location, ritual history, role of the 'tree' etc. were only mentioned briefly without much background story building. Perhaps the author saves that for another story. The author's writing skill has improved from the first books. He now spins multiple story threads and melds them professionally. A good genre read but mostly simple compared to the giants in this category like G.R.R. Martin, Robert Jordan, Terry Brooks, Tolkien and others. Worth a read.

I excitedly read Erin's unique and beautiful book and I thought to myself, “Wow, you surely can judge a book by its cover!”,at least this one! Erin's guide to kindness and connection with children touched my spirit and inspired me to open my heart to new ways of relating to my own child.Immediately upon reading Erin's Intro and very first Chapter, I felt as if I began to know her heartfelt desire to share, guide andhelp others through her vast knowledge, wisdom and experience as a therapist and Mom who faces the struggles we all face in parenting our children. This book moves quickly, easily and with a focus on the how and why connection and kindness are so vitally important to both our child’sand even our own development. It is a Win-Win for Parent-Child relationships. It is easy to see why Erin has been endorsed by Shefali Tsabary, along with many others. I was delightfully surprised to read how she's know since she was only 11 years old just what she wanted to do in life. I can tell you that as a receiver of her valued wisdom, Erin is absolutely succeeding in helping others and making this world a better place one family at a time. Also, I began tearing up while reading on Page 4 about whatErin and her family were about to do for Selvin, a cruise-worker, missing his family. And then in the very next line Erin actually teared up!I thank Erin for both utilizing her expertise as a social worker and her very own personal family stories which helped me feel like I am not aloneand there is a better way. I believe after reading this that if we all focused on our connection and kindness to others we would changethe world! This is powerful storytelling, enjoyable reading, very uplifting and I am getting the Connection...KINDNESS. Thank you, Erin!!!

Degaetano Erin Taylor has written a gem of a book that's a "must-read" for every parent on the planet . Why? Weaving personal narratives of her own experience as a mother, along with compelling stories from her work as a therapist and parent coach, the author accomplishes a rarity in parenting books today: Giving guidance, not from telling moms and dads what to do, but from sharing what is most dear, important, and supportive of children's optimal emotional/social intelligence. Throughout, she makes a critically important distinction between seeking compliance from our children rather than connection with our children. Although we know from research from several decades now, that our connection to our kids is so much more critical than any of our parenting methods or new-fangled ideas, it is a consistent challenge for most moms and dads today to maintain a deep connection with their children when faced with kids' behaviors or attitudes in need of adjustment. This book clearly shows how to keep and build those timely and timeless connections for much more joy, while tapping into the inherent generosity and kindness of our children and teens. Pick up the book today. It will not only inform you, but inspire all aspects of your parenting, as well.

By Kimberly Each chapter of Erin's book shares a different aspect to engaging in and implementing kindness in our lives. Whether it be kindness to ourselves, our spouse, our children, or the community at large, it is in spreading kindness that we build and encourage an environment of compassion and connection. Many of Erin's stories were relevant and relatable to my own experience of motherhood, however, I found Chapter 8, Be Kind to Yourself Get a Life of Your Own, resonated deeply with me. A few years ago, when my oldest had moved out, and my second son would soon be going off to college, I returned to college myself realizing my years as a full-time mom were waning (as they should) and my own personal goals needed attention as well. Erin, who is a parenting coach and counselor, as well as a mother to four children (one of whom passed away shortly after birth), crafts a piece of work peppered with personal stories from her home and work life which all parents are sure to relate to. With realistic suggestions on how to become a parent who cultivates kindness in themselves, as well as in their family members, this book would also make a terrific gift!

King The Stoneybrook Lighthouse was boarded up under mysterious circumstances years ago, and shortly thereafter the owners left town. Now the Hatt family has returned to Stoneybrook with plans to restore and sell the property. The Hatts are staying with Claudia's family while they get settled. When the Hatts begin receiving threatening letters, Claudia and her friends want to know why. Do the letters have something to do with a tragic accident that took place at the lighthouse all those years ago? Claudia and the rest of the Baby-Sitters Club are determined to find out.The Baby-Sitters Club books are formulaic, but, judging by the popularity the series enjoyed during the 1990's, it's a formula that works. I devoured the series as a child and enjoyed revisiting this book as an adult. Little details such as Claudia's secret candy stash and poor spelling, Kristy's love of sports, and Mallory's huge family came rushing back to me as I was reading and brought a smile to my face.
