You don't have to be good to be perfect.

From Sara Shepard, #1 New York Times bestselling author of the Pretty Little Liars series, comes another series full of juicy secrets, nail-biting suspense, and beautiful girls who will do anything to hide the ugly truth.

Ava, Caitlin, Mackenzie, Julie, and Parker are all driven to be perfect—no matter the cost. At first the girls think they have nothing in common, until they discover that they all hate the same person: handsome womanizer Nolan Hotchkiss, who's done things to hurt each of them. They come up with the perfect plan to murder Nolan—jokingly, of course. They'd never actually go through with it. But when Nolan turns up dead in the exact way they'd discussed, the girls suddenly become prime suspects in his murder. Only, they didn't do it. So who did? Unless they find the real killer, and soon, their perfect lives will come crashing down around them.

The Perfectionists, by Sara Shepard

From School Library Journal Gr 9 Up—Image is everything at Beacon Heights High, where only the best is good enough for the ultracompetitive teens of this affluent Seattle suburb. The highest grades, the chicest clothes, the wildest parties are part and parcel. In this bubble of pressure and privilege, no one is more popular—or more feared—than Nolan Hotchkiss. Cruel and hypnotic, he seems to know everybody's dirty little secret. And everybody seems to have one, including Parker Duvall, Ava Jalali, Caitlin Martell-Lewis, Julie Redding, and Mackenzie Wright. Each girl has her own reason to hate Nolan, and each one has something to hide. When his dead body is discovered with the words "Monster" and "Liar" scrawled in Sharpie on his face, the five emerge as murder suspects. Did they really do it—or are they being framed? Fans of the author's "Pretty Little Liars" series (HarperCollins) will recognize that certain plots (deceit, secrets, murder) and structural elements (chapters rotate among the lead female characters) have been recycled; unfortunately, the new series feels derivative by comparison. An additional purchase, based on the strength of the author's popularity.—Susan Wengler, Saint Dominic Academy, Jersey City, NJ

From the Back Cover

Five perfect girls. One perfect murder.

In Beacon Heights, Washington, five high school seniors know that you don't have to be good to be perfect.

Mackenzie, Ava, Caitlin, Julie, and Parker are all driven to be perfect—no matter the cost. At first these five girls think they have nothing in common, until they discover they all hate the same person: rich, entitled Nolan, who's done terrible things to each of them. They come up with the perfect plan to murder Nolan—a hypothetical murder, of course. It's all wishful thinking . . . until they wake up one morning to find that their wish came true. Nolan was killed, in exactly the way they planned. The thing is, they didn't do it. So who did?

Suddenly the girls are the prime suspects in the murder. And they need to find the real killer before their perfect lives are ended—for good.

By This Girl Reads A Lot I don't like to compare novels but it's hard not to compare this novel to it's predecessor, Pretty Little Liars. Sara has unknowingly pinned herself as the queen of YA mystery, every book after it has somehow managed to blurb her novel as a comparative book, so it's likely that this book would be compared to the series. With that being said, here we go, The Perfectionists is a shiny new version of Pretty Little Liars. It has the same format, pretty girls, mysterious murderer/stalker, and a nerve wracking amount of open-ended, unanswered questions. Yes, ladies and gentleman, you will get no resolution to the mystery whatsoever. It is true to it's Shepard fashion.Like Pretty Little Liars, the novel centers around a group of girls with a ton of secrets, and twisty mysterious pasts. Unlike Pretty Little Liars although, these girls lives seem a little bit more dark, a little bit more dramatic--at least for some of the girls. There is high school drama, but I never found it too angst-y, or childish like it could have possibly been. I did find myself following along and feeling that edge of your seat nervousness but, I should have known that I would not get the answers I was seeking. Be forewarned, there is a mother of a cliffhanger, meaning there are no tied ends. Those suckers are loose and flailing and probably will do so until the series is complete. My only hope is that I (we) don't have to weed through 20 or so novels before the mystery is solved. The romance, because of course there is some, was a tricky, tricky thing. The relationships I thought were solid and true turned out to be a lie. The mushy moments turned brutal and the characters were flailing through life, school, and love. I think I liked this about the book the most. You never knew who you could trust. And, even when you thought you knew, you were wrong. That being said, I really enjoyed the novel. It did keep me intrigued and I do have a strong desire to continue the series. I'm definitely interested in finding out what happens next.My only comment is this if you are a strong and devoted fan/follower of Pretty Little Liars--you'll more likely than not love this novel. If you were so-so about it and completely up in arms about the number of books in that series, or the unrelenting unanswered questions--this book might tick you off in it's likeness, or it's potential to make you feel the same way you did reading, PLL. I suggest you be prepared for the similarities and enjoy it's differences.I've only read two and a half of the Pretty Little Liars novels, I started with the show--but I think I might like this one more.Enjoy, darlings.

3 of 3 people found the following review helpful. Similar to Pretty Little Liars By Amber @ The Book Bratz Let's be honest. I wasn't planning on reading this. I saw the cover, saw the author, and read the summary and backed off. I like Sara's writing, but her books are all the same. Rich girls who make stupid mistakes and now are being tormented about it. I read about it for fifteen books in her Pretty Little Liars series, I wasn't planning on it again. But of course I put myself through the torture because though I wasn't a fan of this one, I want to know what is going to happen.Sara's writing is great, she sucks her readers in with no problem. The story flows and it keeps your attention. That isn't the problem. I have already said it but this is so similar to Pretty Little Liars. Sara Shepard is a commonly known author now, since both of her books (Pretty Little Liars and The Lying Game) had become TV shows, but she always sticks with the same murder mysteries, with rich girls who break the law and try to get out of it. It is boring now. I'm over it.The characters were well developed, I understood the girls and what was going on in their lives. Some had tragic backgrounds, another was cheating on her boyfriend. Same old. The one thing I hated most about all of them is that, they planned a fake murder in the middle of class, exactly how they would do it, what they would use, ect. and expecting no body to hear them? Really? Then they are so shocked when Nolan is murdered the same way. It really didn't shock me. Sometimes there were clues right in front of their faces and they didn't even notice. Huh? It just frustrated me a lot.Like Pretty Little Liars there are little subplots too. Who is hooking up with their friend's boyfriend, who is trying to get with the new guy, who is being blackmailed into something. All five girls have something else going on that really doesn't relate to the actually murder. I honestly think this is what kept my attention the most. I'm pretty sure I know who the killer is, all the evidence is pointed right at them. You never know though.

I've read an incredible number of children's books for them, Fredrik Fompel is one of the few that the kids really enjoyed. In the beginning it was a bit difficult to follow the plot but when Svingen takes us into a world of adventure creatures and super evil villains, then the kids loved it and would not that I should stop reading..

In amazingly lifelike, luminous paintings, Wendell Minor, one of America’s finest wildlife and landscape painters, reveals the variety of animals that surround us when we are awake and when we are sleeping. Minor’s vivid introduction to diurnal (daytime) and nocturnal (nighttime) creatures invites readers to experience the movements, sounds, colors, and textures of nature. By day a red-tailed hawk soars through sky, and by night a barn owl silently swoops through it. In the daylight a family of fluffy cottontail rabbits hops into a field to forage for food, and under starlight a family of pink-nosed opossums does the same. As day turns to night and night to day, amazing critters large and small come and go. Children will enjoy comparing and contrasting the roaming habits of the wonderful wildlife that surrounds us.

Daylight Starlight Wildlife, by Wendell Minor

From School Library Journal PreS-Gr 2—This gorgeous picture book provides a look at animals that are active during the day (diurnal), those who come out at night (nocturnal), and a few that appear at sunrise or twilight (crepuscular). Minor relies on simple, lyrical text ("Speedy gray squirrel scurries all day in search of acorns to store for winter.") and stunning, full-color paintings to share characteristics of each creature, as he takes readers from day to night and back again. Many of the critters will be familiar to children (rabbit, deer, skunk), while several are lesser known (opossum, flying squirrel, luna moth). The use of comparisons and contrasts will be especially helpful in classroom settings, but browsers will also be attracted by the appealing, realistic illustrations. There are two pages of "Fun Facts" appended, which include thumbnail illustrations of the 22 animals, along with some interesting additional information for the most curious. VERDICT This lovely title should find a spot in all collections and will likely inspire greater outdoor observation and appreciation.—Sara-Jo Lupo Sites, George F. Johnson Memorial Library, Endicott, NY

Review * “Gorgeous. . . . Minor relies on simple, lyrical text and stunning, full-color paintings to share characteristics of each creature, as he takes readers from day to night and back again. Many of the critters will be familiar to children, while several are lesser known. . . . Appealing, realistic illustrations. There are two pages of “Fun Facts” . . . with some interesting additional information for the most curious. This lovely title should find a spot in all collections and will likely inspire greater outdoor observation and appreciation.”—School Library Journal, starred review“An album of contrasts. . . . The attraction of this invitation to explore daytime and nighttime worlds is visual: appealing gouache-and-watercolor animal portraits display Minor’s characteristic use of light and color, meticulous detail, and appreciation for nature. . . . For storytime or laptime, another beautiful rendition of the natural world.”—Kirkus Reviews  “Minor’s bucolic imagery suggests abundant space for humans and wildlife alike, and even if this green world is not an everyday reality for all readers, Minor’s gentle scenes will draw them in.”—Publishers Weekly“In his signature representational artistic style—detailed, luminous, and pristine—Minor compares and contrasts diurnal and nocturnal animals.”—The Horn Book

About the Author Wendell Minor’s mission is to inspire children to go out into the fields, woods, and mountains to see wildlife in its natural habitat and gain a positive perspective on the world’s beauty. He has traveled all over the United States to research the art for his many novel jackets and picture books, which include How Big Could Your Pumpkin Grow?, My Farm Friends, The Buffalo Are Back (by Jean Craighead George), Look to the Stars (by Buzz Aldrin), and If You Were a Penguin (by Florence Minor). His paintings are in the permanent collections of the Norman Rockwell Museum, the Museum of American Illustration, the US Air Force, the US Coast Guard, and NASA, and he had a major retrospective, Wendell Minor’s America, at the Norman Rockwell Museum in 2014. 1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Beautifully illustrated educational picture book By Renee @ Mother Daughter Book Reviews This book was reviewed by Mother Daughter Book Reviews on their website.Daylight Starlight Wildlife is a beautiful work of art which reminded me of bedtime classics for young children such as Time for Bed by Mem Fox and I Love You as Much… by Laura Krauss Melmed and illustrated by Henri Sorenson. I never tired of reading these books which featured soft lilting rhymes while gazing at the gorgeous illustrations magically capturing a wide variety of wildlife on full page spreads. To be clear though… Daylight Starlight Wildlife is NOT a rhyming book. Not only is Daylight Starlight Wildlife an absolutely beautiful book to thumb through but it is educational as well. Animals are depicted in their natural habitat engaging in behavior at the appropriate time of day. Children will see a majestic red-tailed hawk soaring high into the sunny sky and will flip the page to see a barn owl flying in the night sky with a bright full moon in the background. I love the inclusion of some more “unusual” animals such as the flying squirrel, the luna moth, an adorable family of opossum, and a bobcat and her kitten. It’s a bit of a shame that there were two different varieties of owls instead of a completely different animal (a bat anyone?), but there is still quite the diversity of animals depicted in the book with some of their key features described through the text.I highly recommend this beautiful picture book as a bedtime book for children ages 3 to 8 and would think that it would be a great choice as a read-aloud book in a kindergarten or early elementary school class.* I received a copy of this book free-of-charge from Penguin Books in exchange for my honest opinion. All opinions expressed are my own.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. amazing By My 2 Cents If your young children are interested in wildlife and you are interested in teaching them about the amazing creatures that roam outdoors by day and by night, this is the perfect book to share.Lovely illustrated wildlife can be found throughout the pages of this book. Swallow tale butterflies, opossum and her plods, cotton tale bunny and kits, red-tale hawk, barn owl, white tail deer, fox, woodchucks, skunks, chipmunks, box turtles, bob cats, coyote, raccoon, wild turkey and cardinals. The text is relatively simple, yet is written in a way to engage little ones in conversation about the critters they see on each page. Next to the illustrations, I though the "fun facts glossary" at the end of the book which shows a small picture as well as pertinent facts on each of the animals on the preceding pages. The vivid colors and textures throughout the books are outstanding. An excellent teaching opportunity for parents and teachers to educate and encourage little ones to be outdoors and to care about the critters that live in the wild.

0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. A great book for children who love animals! By Kathleen Ritter The colors of Wendell Minor’s richly detailed illustrations are vibrant and the rhythm of the carefully crafted sentences carries you along. There is so much going on in the pictures, children will stare at them for long minutes. I play a favorite game with my children, asking “where is the turtle?” etc. and praising them when they touch the correct image. I love children’s books like this one that are educational – we learn the names and habits of animals, including which are active during daylight and which are nocturnal. We learn about how the Earth spins around the sun, causing day and night. Baby animals accompany their mothers on most pages. Children who love animals will thoroughly enjoy this book. It’s a perfect invitation for them to explore the outdoors. The author includes a Fun Facts page at the end for curious children who want to learn more.

Our Heros In The Firehouse By prisrob When my granddaughter was in pre-school, one of her favorite adventures with her friends was visiting the firehouse. She told me all about the firemen and what they learned. From that moment on, whenever she passes a firehouse she waves at the firemen. This was the perfect opportunity for this little girl and her friends to understand the firehouse, and the kind firemen, so they were never frightened of the big fire engines and their noise. The authors, James McDonald and Brook Watson, are firefighters in Chicago. They understand how important it is for children to be educated about firemen, fire engines and the firehouse they live in. In this book, a little boy and his mother have an appointment at 4pm to go to the firehouse. There they meet the little boy's uncle who is a firefighter. He shows them the firehouse, the fire engine, the hoses and equipment. When you read this book you will see what adventures the little boy has with his uncle in the firehouse.Parents/teachers will enjoy reading this book to their children. The children will be so excited to hear about the firemen and the firehouse. They will have so many questions, and this book will help to answer some of them. The illustrations by James Ganem are bright, vivid and beautiful. They depict the entire story of the little boy and his adventures at the firehouse. It is important for children to be educated about the world around them, and starting at an early age is the best idea. This is a fun story, filled with a lot of good information, told in a manner that children will understand. The best part of this book is that the book is told in rhyme, and that is one of the best methods to educate children. Note: this book was provided for me to read and review.Recommended. prisrob 08-04-15

Tony Ganem (Illustrator) is one of the best children's books I've read in some time By Coco Given To Me For An Honest ReviewSplash Down: Adventures in Firefighting Series James McDonald (Author), Brooks Watson (Author), Tony Ganem (Illustrator) is one of the best children's books I've read in some time. I loved it! I do hope that there are more to come in the future. The reading age level is 2 - 8 and the grade level is P - 3. But I feel that it can be for anyone who loves fun imaginative books. A special visitor to the firehouse for the first time uses his imagination and he "becomes" a firefighter just like his Uncle. He learns that what he thought was all fun was really had work, skill and practices. So he decides that if he works very hard, one day he very well could become the firefighter he wants to be. The illustrations are beautiful and colorful. The writing is very clear. This book could be a read along, read alone or a read to. It includes rhymes, firefighting facts and a surprise ending ******* I'm not telling. SURPRISE FOR YOU!!! Each child that finishes this book can get a FREE, printable, JUNIOR FIREFIGHTER COMPLETION AWARD that they can put their name on!! This includes boys and girls. Because girls become firefighters too. I gave this book 5 stars but it deserves so many more. This book would make a great addition to your child's bookshelf or to any library's bookshelf. It would also make a great gift. There are always birthdays and Christmas is just around the corner. I highly recommend this book to everyone, especially to thos who love children. I look for more from James McDonald and Brooks Watson. All I can say keep them pouring out.

Silk, Author/Reviewer I'm thrilled to have the opportunity to read this exciting children's story which is written by two firefighters who are with the Chicago's Northside Fire Department. Who else could present such a worthy story for children? It just may give children the insight of one day becoming a brave firefighter themselves. The story is written in rhyming style to draw serious attention of the child. The illustrations are colorful and fun. I'll name the little boy in this story Jimmy, as his mom is taking him to where his uncle works at the local firehouse. His uncle is a big guy with a happy, sweet smile. He's looking forward to giving Jimmy a good, fun experience of what firemen do to put out fires and to save and protect people. It's a wonderful, meaningful story. I enjoyed it very much and hope it comes out in print. Till then, I'll share this tale with the 8-year old boy next door whose father is an EMT with the Salt Lake Unified Fire Authority. I smiled and laughed while reading this story, it's so much fun! Thanks James and Brooks for sharing this fine story!

Boy I was I so wrong. Everything spiraled out of control. More drama involving Char, her mother, Les, Ms Vee and the feds. I was disappointed in Vic this time around. He claimed he loved his fiancee but yet he's all in Stacy face. I get it she help him find Char and provided his with a lot of important information. But..... He had a fiancee and he should've keep his distance until he figure his s*** out and got his mind right. Stacy might've been his soul mate but she was foul because she new Vic had a fiancee. He was off limits no matter of his relationship issues. Period. That's my issue with Stacy. Char and Stacy end up fighting and Char lost her baby. They both was at fault. I felt bad for her and Vic. Despite it all, they wanted the baby. Now Char. She was nothing but a backstabbing, conniving, gold-digging, money hungry hoe. In the end she got what she deserved along with Les and Pepper. Les was suppose to be is right hand man and betrayed him with the help from Pepper and eventually Char played a role in the scheme toward the end. Vic couldn't believed the ones he loved, trusted and thought had his back was out to get him. No loyalty at all. After every thing came to light, Vic got together with Stacy but decided to take things slow. This was a very good read with nonstop drama, suspense and mysteries. So many twist and turn and a unbelievable chain of events. You won't believe the finale. I was in total shock. Great book Brooklyn June!4 The Reader N U Presents

Now, Vic isn't a perfect guy, nor does he always make the best decisions, but Char...I can't believe this chic. I wasn't even 5 chapters in and Char was getting on my nerves. As soon as Vic leaves the house, all her insecurities and issues kick in. She's so self destructive. She drove me crazy. Well besides that, I enjoyed all the suspense from trying to figure out who was behind all of Vic ands Char's woes. When I found out who it was, it was so completely foul and scandalous. People will do almost anything for the love of money. This story really had me going. I had a suspicion about one of the violators, but the other one.... wow, just dirty! I liked that the narration was kept the same as in part 1...from Vic and Char's point of view and I really liked Stacy's character. She proved to be down and trustworthy, just the person that was needed and at the right time. Great job Brooklyn June! Looking forward to the next great read!

Just when you thought Vic and Char would live happily ever after in this book you are so wrong. Stacy plays a bigger role in this sequel. Vic's partner Les is also a major character. All of the characters were well developed and they each had a relevant story line. I love the plot twists because just when you think you know, you really don't know. June Miller is still the Master of the plot twists. Thanks for giving us a book with substance to read. It's been a minute since I gave out 5 stars. Team Stacy.
