Count on None the Number and the #1 New York Times bestselling artist of THE DAY THE CRAYONS QUIT to guide young readers from 0 - 10 and back again! "Is none a number?" you might ask. Counting with the reader all the way up to ten, the Hueys explain numbers as only they can. The number 4 is the number of tantrums thrown by Kevin every day. 7 is the number of oranges the Hueys have balanced on things. And 9 is the number of seagulls who attacked Frank's French fries. Together they make quite a spectacle. But when you take away all of these fun illustrations in the book? You're left with none! This funny and accessible counting book from #1 New York Times bestseller Oliver Jeffers gives the Hueys one more reason to be every young child's best friends.Praise for The Hueys In: None the Number“Delightfully droll and enlightening. Review JEFFERS, Oliver. The Hueys in None the Number: A Counting Adventure. illus. by Oliver Jeffers. 32p. (The Hueys: Bk. 3). Philomel. Jul. 2014. K-Gr 3– The Hueys are back to teach readers the value of an often-ignored number. Delightfully droll and enlightening, the unconventional Jeffers reveals the importance of the number zero. To make this point, one of the pill-shaped Hueys counts up to ten, giving examples along the way: “SIX fishermen waiting for the bus./SEVEN oranges I balanced on some things yesterday.” And, he makes it clear, when you take away all those items, what do you have left? None. And, none is the same as zero. The illustrations, “made with pencils and a bit of color” on large white pages, are deceptively simple and ridiculously funny. This counting book becomes a “seek and find” when all the not-so-obvious objects that have been enumerated are scattered across two pages. An afterword by the author about “none” appears on the back cover--though it will be unreadable if the dust jacket is left on. Jeffers’s persuasive lesson will have readers counting up to 10 using 11 numbers.--School Library Journal

Charming and effective By J.Prather I have enjoyed all of Oliver Jeffers' Hueys books, however I think this latest entry in the series is my favorite. Jeffers' signature little jellybean characters are back and filled with as much charm as ever. This title gives a unique look at numbers due to it's emphasis on the concept of none. Artistically, it makes a lot of sense for this series when you examine Jeffers brilliant use of so much white space to help young readers focus on the important concepts. From an educational standpoint, this is a great choice for young readers learning their numbers. The items on each number spread are all easy to count, the number itself is large, and the number word is featured prominently on each page. The concept of addition is addressed when we travel from one to two, and at the end when we reach ten, everything is taken away with a poof and we arrive back at none. This is not your standard count the apples fare. We get to count four temper tantrums that Kevin throws every day and nine seagulls that are after Frank's french fries. The rest are all just as whimsical, with plenty of humor and enough quirky details to delight young readers into many re-reads. How Jeffers does this while still maintaining his minimalist style is a bit of a mystery.None the Number is a fine choice for any young reader learning numbers and counting basics. Those who are already familiar with the Hueys will love seeing them again, and those who haven't met these delightful little creatures will certainly enjoy this introduction. None the number is a must have for any toddler and preschool collection.

The Cost of All Things, by Maggie Lehrman

From School Library Journal Gr 8 Up—The premise of Lehrman's debut is quite intriguing. Unfortunately, the novel does not deliver due to stereotypical characters and a story that turns convoluted very quickly. There are those who practice the art of "hekame" which allows them to cast spells to erase a person's memories, make them beautiful, or even help them hook friends forever. The story is told in the four voices of friends Ari, Kay, Win, and Markos. Win has recently died and Ari, his girlfriend, decides to spend $5,000 on a spell to erase all of her memories of Win. As she soon discovers, for every action there is a reaction. Though she dreamed of becoming a prima ballerina in New York, Ari begins suffering from physical clumsiness that prevents her from dancing—a direct side effect of the spell to erase her memory. Readers also learn that Markos, Kay, and Win have also purchased spells that affect them and their relationships with their family and friends. The theme that everyone is responsible for their own actions is redolent here. VERDICT Skip this novel and read E. Lockhart's We Were Liars (Delacorte, 2014) instead, which carries this theme to a much more satisfying end.—Elizabeth Kahn, Patrick F. Taylor Science & Technology Academy, Jefferson, LA

Review “An engrossing, emotionally resonant spin on the old adage: Be careful what you wish for.” (Kirkus Reviews)“Lehrman’s prose pulses with dark emotion…and the steady desperation of her characters is both disturbing and compelling.” (Publishers Weekly)“A memorable debut, one that reminds readers to be careful what they wish for, because, yes, they may just get it.” (Booklist)“The most creepily awesome cautionary tale ever. Magic—or hekame—does exist, and wishes can be granted...but always at a cost. Brilliant, provocative, and absolutely spellbinding.” (Lauren Myracle, New York Times bestselling author of The Infinite Moment of Us)“Maggie Lehrman nimbly reveals secrets wrapped around our most basic need. The Cost of All Things is a walk of the soul.” (Rita Williams-Garcia, Coretta Scott King Author Award Winner)“With a captivating premise, elegant writing, and memorable characters, The Cost of All Things is a powerful examination of the interconnectedness of the human experience.” (Franny Billingsley, author of the National Book Award Finalist Chime)“In The Cost of All Things, Maggie Lehrman spins a gorgeous and intricate web of secrets, love, loss, and redemption. This is a deeply moving and insightful novel from an incredible new voice.” (Coe Booth, acclaimed author of Tyrell)

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. All Magic Comes With a Price By E. J Watkins Not all magic can be free of repercussion, which is the moral of the debut novel by Maggie Lehrman "The Cost of All Things."When Ari's boyfriend Win dies, Ari does something impulsive and rash (like most teenagers) and takes a spell to erase any memory of him. Told through four character's perspectives (Win (told through flashbacks), Kay, Ari, and Markos), the novel deals with the complexities of how our decisions affect those around us. While yes most of these characters are flawed, they are also real. There were times that I was reading the book where I recognized some of myself in Markos or even pieces of Kay which drew me into the story even more. Without giving too much away, the climax in the hardware store near the end of the novel, gives us a glimpse into why the main characters have acted they way they have, and shows the reader that even in the most dire situations, you can change. This is a strong debut from Lehrman who draws from the Young Adult genre while adding something new and magical to the canon. I cannot wait to see what other stories she has to tell.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Not Harry Potter magic, something more real. By J. Rife Unusual book to me. It uses magic to dramatize how the individual choices we make impact many. The book follows a group of young people in a time when you can buy a magic spell to make things better, in this case, to forget traumatic deaths, to make one pretty or popular. But the wishes all impinge on each other, leading to a dramatic ending.

By Dark Faerie Tales Review courtesy of Dark Faerie TalesQuick & Dirty: An evocative, intriguing debut about how one mistake can lead to a chain of reactions.Opening Sentence: There’s a hemakist who lives in the run-down cluster of houses behind the high school. The Review:Ari’s boyfriend Win died. So she does what many do in hard times – she takes a spell from a Hemakist. She forgets him, she forgets her pain, but it sets off a chain reaction that changes the lives of everyone she knows. Suddenly, her friendships are unraveling, she can no longer dance, and her life seems to be falling apart. Revelations and romances bloom in this twisty, evocative novel. Each one of the five points of views played a large part in this story. That was part of why I liked it so much – the characters were all unique, and showed a lot of complexity under their public facade. There was depth to each of them from the start, and part of what made this novel so interesting is watching as they evolve. We saw them at their best. But we also saw them at their worst – they were flawed, they were imperfect – that was what made them so realistic and relatable. The writing had a flowing, evocative, almost melodic quality to it that made reading from these five points of view (Echo, Ari, Markos, Diana, and Kay) a breeze. There were plenty of different characters to talk about, but let’s go with Kay first. She was probably the character that made me feel the most, ironically – her name is Katelyn. Mine is Kaitlin. Anyway, she had spelled her two friends with a hook, which made it impossible for them to ditch her. While this is a horrible thing to do, it also proved the fragility of her self-esteem, and how deeply she was imprinted by her sister leaving without her to vacation the globe. She was my favorite character to watch develop, because she definitely had her ups and downs, and her emotions were so vivid. I think, in the end, she made sacrifices that overcame the other girls, even though she had made some of the worst mistakes.Markos was our one male perspective in this novel and I think he stood out. On the outside, he’s a player, and he’s a party boy. But on the inside there is so much more going on. He feels that he has failed to reach his family’s expectations for him, which makes me sad and angry. To add to that, he’s having increasing feelings for a girl that he never wanted to fall in love with. It’s a relationship that he knows he’ll end up screwing up, which, of course, makes the fallout happen so much quicker. Adding to that, his mother is hiding something that will have repercussions. Watching him navigate the precarious situations he was in was really interesting, and his character was one of my favorites. The other three characters were just as great, each of them a different story and with different issues. This was a really character-driven novel, and I loved the message that there is more to anyone that meets the eye. There were plenty of other messages, too – my English teacher would have a field day on this one. I think that the writing style was really gorgeous, and the plotline traveled really nicely. This was my first magical realism novel, having just discovered that this was a separate genre from fantasy (thanks, Mrs. Cullen!). The magical elements add to the plotline without overcoming it. I think that it’s worth a read and would recommend it for sure!Notable Scene:So much for making things right. So much for spells. They couldn’t be counted on when it mattered. Spells would always find a way to trick you, to use your weaknesses against you, to come up with the ugliest possible solution to your problem. They were blunt instruments – but then again so were planks and flames. Fists and hammers. So were words and kisses.FTC Advisory: Balzar + Bray/HarperTeen provided me with a copy of The Cost of All Things. No goody bags, sponsorships, “material connections,” or bribes were exchanged for my review.

A magical, mythical tale of self-discovery and love By YA Book Madness Blog I received this book as a gift.Isis is suffering from severe insomnia, the kind that is an all-consuming battle waged between sickness and health. Isis would kill to sleep but it haunted by the shadowed creature that plagues her nightmares, growing ever closer, eager to devour her. She’s so sick and extremely tired of what the insomnia is doing to her life, she decides to confront the demon lurking in the shadows and conquer her fears. What she finds there is not at all what she expected. In place of what she could only assume was a snarling monster is a beautiful, winged creature that appears to be about her age. The creature insists that Isis has done something nefarious, that she has crossed the line in her dreams to a forbidden realm and threatens her life is she refuses to leave. Isis can’t believe the boy, that would be crazy so they strike a wager. If the boy can prove to Isis that he’s real, she will never return to that magical place in her dreamworld, the one that sparks her insomnia. With that, the deal is sealed and Isis can only hope that her sleepless nights are over.Isis finds that her dreams are far more real than she ever could have imagined when the boy from her nightmares enrolls in her school. Unsettled and scared out of her mind, Isis is forced to accept the truth, the boy, David, is real and he doesn’t appear to be going anywhere anytime soon. Isis is swept up into a world of myth and magic as she and David grow closer and secrets are revealed. A crazy ex-boyfriend, ill-fated love, and a mystery you’ll never see coming, Creatura is a mythological adventure. The mythology is beautifully written, almost like a whimsical bedtime story. Full of wonder, love, enchantment, and breathtaking imagery. The story of the star and Deus is sigh-out-loud, giddy romantic and so passionate. Creatura (The Creatura Series Book 1), by Nely Cab

From a very early age, she felt like she didn't 't belong due to her father's disappointment that she wasn't a boy. Throughout her life, she suffers through abuse from a relative, her parent's divorce, a teen pregnancy, her sexual orientation, and discovering who she is.I liked the book and once again Storm shows she's not afraid to tackle any subject. I loved the message she conveys about finding yourself and being happy with who you are. There were a few typos, but other than that this is a great story.

I applaud her courage and candor as she details her years of suffering at the hands of supposed loved ones and state agencies By Rosalyn This book was a true sacrifice of the author-- pouring her soul into each page and disrobing her shame in the hopes that it will liberate others with similar accounts and empower them too to advocate for change in the child welfare system. I applaud her courage and candor as she details her years of suffering at the hands of supposed loved ones and state agencies. My heart both hurt for her and cheered for her as I read her metamorphosis from the little girl in the attic to the Butterfly--unbound and free.Congratulations Shandreka! They couldn't break you!

By kelly j. gardner As a former victim of the Foster Care system, I have a firsthand knowledge of what the author so bravely displayed in her book, so as I read her words it felt as though I was having a one on one conversation with her, which I feel would be very therapeutic to other victims as they can see that there are real people out here in the world that also share their same upbringing, background and similar experiences as well, which might in turn make them more willing to open up about their selves and seek counseling as well as the possibility of wanting to help others in the same situation. As I stated earlier, the author was so brave to open up and show her vulnerable side to the world which I find so refreshing as well as I see that it was step towards her overcoming her circumstances and eventually steps on the road to being healed with an ultimate goal of learning the value of one’s true self-worth…

James The author really opened up herself and showed a level of vulnerability, I am not sure I would have been able.Shandreka took me on a journey that made me question my way of thinking. I realized (as continue to do each day) that we are nothing more than our life experiences strung together and these experiences shape how we react to different events, issues, conflicts as well as celebrations. In short- we all are going to react to things differently and even if I don't agree I should take a minute to try to understand where a person is coming from.I also realized that the Foster Care system is broken (like many other systems) in this country. It is extremely unfortunate that Shandreka was forced to endure all that she has, but I am so happy that God and the universe turned things around for her.
