Woodpecker Wham!, by April Pulley Sayre

From School Library Journal PreS-Gr 3—A northern flicker, a yellow-bellied sapsucker, and other woodpeckers of the eastern deciduous forests "chip," "chop," and "wham" their way through the seasons through crisp verses and paper collages in this informational picture book. There are quiet moments as well: woodpeckers "pluck and feed" at the cherry tree while cherries dangle against an azure sky. Jenkins's illustrations are top-notch, beautifully depicting the different subspecies of woodpeckers, such as the flicker's subtle grays and golds, which contrast with its neck rings, and spotted chest. With metronomic precision, Sayre's verses describe the woodpecker's activity: "Hawk's a-hunting./Stop. Drop. Hide./Quiet/on the other side," and along with the illustrations, mostly spreads, make for engaging read-alouds. The end pages, supported by information from Cornell's Laboratory of Ornithology and other biologists, offer more information that will be key for students engaged in Common Core activities, paired with small images, which name the featured woodpeckers. Readers learn how these birds forage, build shelter and nests, avoid predators, and instruct their young, among other topics. VERDICT Lovely and exciting, this title is a great hook for young researchers, as well as fledgling ornithologists.—Teresa Pfeifer, The Springfield Renaissance School, Springfield, MA

Review

“With bouncy verse and colorful illustrations, an experienced picture-book team introduces a familiar bird . . . Attractive and surprising informative, this should join the duo's Eat Like a Bear on every preschool and primary nature shelf.” ―Kirkus Reviews

“This strikes the right note for budding bird-watchers.” ―Booklist

“Sayre introduces the distinctively noisy woodpecker and the rhythmic cadences that fill [a woodpecker's] industrious life through a rhyming, sound word-filled text. . . . Jenkins's cut- and torn-paper collage illustrations provide action-filled perspectives on the birds swooping, pecking, fanning, and preening, with the intricacies of each species' feathers and markings carefully featured.” ―The Horn Book

“Kids who think that eating like a bear means roaring around and nomming everything in sight are in for a surprise.” ―BCCB, starred review on Eat Like a Bear

“Equal parts poetic and enlightening.” ―Publishers Weekly, starred review on Eat Like a Bear

“Inquisitive, informed and lyrical.” ―Kirkus, starred review on Eat Like a Bear

A Book ReviewI was so excited when I saw April Pulley Sayre was coming out with a new book on woodpeckers. I have admired her other books, checking out all that she has to offer from our local library. When I realized that I was the one with Vulture View checked out as I wondered who checked out the same books as me, I knew I had to go ahead and buy it. I like the simple, yet VERY informative writing that engages the reader. I do many nature programs for young children and adults. The words are interactive and engaging. Woodpecker Wham! delivers the same vibe. As a plus, it is set in a similar habitat to our area.I have enjoyed getting to know the different woodpeckers in our midwest area. We put suet cakes out sometimes to attract them even more, yet also see them frequently as we live in a very wooded area. I found it curious that the jacket cover is quite different from the hardcover of the book. Both are gorgeous! I am VERY impressed with the illustrator's ability to truly show the details on these birds with cut paper and paint. Check out those feet on the pileated woodpecker! It's neat to see that flash of red in the woods behind our house. Each page has about 4 lines of text, with three to four words each. It doesn't sound like much, yet each word is carefully chosen to teach about the birds. Rhyming words help with the message. The illustrations support the words with great detail. Action and/or sound words help bring the book to life as they are read, giving an interactive aspect to the pages. The author shows how red bellied woodpeckers communicate through tapping on trees, insect are eaten, holes are drilled for sap, bird clean, hollow cleaned out, eat berries, babies crack eggs, feeding fledglings, storing acorns, and making a hole in a tree. I am amazed at how much she packs in with so few words. At the end, she gives more detailed information on woodpeckers in general, sharing information on chisel shaped beaks, how they hitch and hop, send instant messages, use their tongues, how seeds pass through their digestive tract, how many survive in one forest, attracting woodpeckers to our yards, keeping secure homes, raising families, and more! There are also labeled illustrations of all the woodpeckers that are highlighted at the back of the book.Personally, I will use this book for my own understanding of woodpeckers and in programs with children in preschool through grade 4 or so, realizing that it is a picture book. While it's simple, it teaches so much. A simple read aloud can have a big impact on children. I read her book, Vulture View, on a hike with adults one time and a turkey vulture soared above our heads. I could see the adults gliding along with the turkey vulture as I read. Reading these books to adults can reinforce the concepts presented.http://insideoutsidemichiana.blogspot.com/2015/05/woodpecker-wham-book-review.html

We received about 10 books on the same day and this wasn't the first (or second) book in the group to catch his eye but after a few readings he has started requesting this book specifically. It now holds his attention for the entire book. I am also going to be using it for a letter of the week book (once we get to "W").

3 of 3 people found the following review helpful. It's another good mystery By SJJM There's been a mystery theft at the science fair and time is running out to find the culprit before the judge swoops in to choose the winning invention. A microchip has gone missing from a robot, and unless it's found, twin brothers, Angus and Archie, look like being knocked out of the competition. It's up to Frankie to use his brilliant detective skills to solve the case so they can be in with a chance. In this third book in the series, Frankie is learning and honing his detective skills. With each new case it's good to see his growing expertise, and that he learns from his mistakes. In this new mystery it's clear that Frankie has mellowed a little, and isn't as quick to accuse along the way. He is learning that a good investigator thinks things through and shouldn't jump to conclusions. One of the strengths of this series is that it steps keen young investigators through the evidence that is scattered throughout the story. They read and learn as Frankie uses the process of elimination to discount false leads and solve the case. As he moves from suspect to suspect, we find that the twins were a common link throughout. I won't say too much, but it was fitting to see some karma in action. When crunch time arrives and it's time to solve, Frankie uses a very clever tactic to make the big reveal. In a nutshellIt's another good mystery, solved by a keen young detective that is sure to inspire young readers.Recommended for ages 8+.Note: I don't claim to be a pro-reviewer, I am a reader. My reviews are based on my personal thoughts around the story that the book is trying to tell. I try to focus on the story (which is the reason I read) rather than dissect the book and pass comment on typos, writing style or structure.

3 of 3 people found the following review helpful. Another Fun Frankie Mystery!! By Melanie This is the third book in this series and it's my favorite one so far! Frankie attends a Sustainable Science Fair with Kat and Amy. He's not thrilled, but once he gets there, there's a mystery to solve!Amy's brothers, Angus and Archie, have been sabotaged. Their robotics chip for their project was taken as payback for something they did. As Frankie starts his interviews, we learn that Angus and Archie have played lots of pranks so there are plenty of suspects! The prize is $300 and two science camp tickets so there are plenty of reasons why someone might not want them to win.It was fun to follow Frankie's investigation into who stole the chip. He's serious about becoming a detective and since he's so young, some adults don't really take him seriously. Frankie is determined to prove he is capable of figuring out what happened. He follows the clues no matter where they will lead him in the end. These books are quick and fun to read. They are perfect for young readers who enjoy mysteries and quirky characters. The first two books dealt with Enderby Manor and some of those characters are mentioned in this one but it mainly deals with the children at the science fair. This is a series I have enjoyed reading and am looking forward to reading his next adventure, which takes place on a luxury cruise liner!I received a copy of this book to review. My opinion is 100% my own.

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. Young Detective Saves the Day (of course). By Rebecca M. Douglass I found the mystery and solution in this story perhaps the most satisfying so far of the Frankie Dupont Mysteries, but admit that as it has been many months since reading the first two, I found that I had lost track of some characters whom I was clearly expected to know. This is frustrating at first, but soon enough the story picks up speed on its own. A quick and easy read, it is nevertheless a good mystery, with a solution that holds up, and it is even plausible that young Frankie can solve it more or less on his own, with some reasoning.I enjoy Frankie, and find that in most of his stories he has a nice blend of unusual smarts--and some lovely flaws, including too much belief in his own skills. The books aren't terribly realistic, and aren't trying to be--there's a hint of SF/Fantasy in most of them, from the super-advanced detective gadgets Frankie uses to the mysterious behavior of Enderby Manor (Book 1). That means that I have to change my mind-set a bit to read them, but most children will have no trouble with it.I can recommend the Frankie Dupont books to any child who likes mystery. I would say it's for fans of the Hardy Boys and Encyclopedia Brown, but these books probably come before those in terms of reading level. The publisher lists the age range as 8-12; I would probably say the audience tends to the lower end of that span.

Prescription (RX) for Parenting: How to Raise Healthy Infants and Children, by Charlotte E. Thompson, Dr Charlotte Thomspon

Review In a wonderful guide filled with useful information for parents, Prescription TX for Parenting: How to Raise Healthy Infants and children by author Charlotte E Thompson, M.D., readers will find a book from a trusted author with many years of experience in the field that they will be able to reference time and time again as their children are growing up. The book has a very easy to follow format divided into four user-friendly sections; those for babies and infants, toddler behavior problems, parenting preschoolers and parenting kids. Reassuring and practical information resounds in this guide, enough to quell the fears of even the most nervous of new parents, and sound enough for those more experienced as well. I very much enjoyed Prescription RX for Parenting: How to Raise Healthy Infants and Children. My sons are eight and eleven now, but I certainly wish I'd had author Charlotte E Thompson, M.D.'s guide when they were younger. As a nervous new mom, the author's reassuring advice might have gone far to quell my frequent fears that I was doing pretty much everything wrong in terms of caring for my babies. This book would be a welcome addition in the library of any parent of children from birth to school-aged, and would be an especially good gift for new parents. I highly recommend Prescription RX for Parenting. I certainly hope that author Charlotte E Thompson, M.D. is already hard at work on another book of this type. I, for one, will be watching for its release. --Tracy A Fischer for Reader's Favorite

Young and old readers alike are fascinated by stories of life in an orphanage. In a carefully researched book about orphans and half-orphans at the turn of the last century, Nancy Price Freedman weaves an eye-opening tale of institutional life, based on the experiences of her father's siblings, who were "inmates" in the Hebrew Orphan Asylum of New York City. Interviews with other inmates of that institution reveal questionable childcare practices that were common in the early twentieth century and considered to be "for the good of the child." The story is told through the eyes of Isak, the only sibling to remain with his widowed mother, in the apartment of his Tante Anna and the abusive Uncle Lou. Isak longs to join his brothers and sister in the orphanage to escape Uncle Lou's beatings, until he learns about the horrors of institutional life, during his monthly visits. His siblings describe their hunger and fear in an orphanage that is supposed to protect their welfare, as well as the bullying there and in the public school they attend. His mother, whose weak heart prevents her from earning a living, is forced to watch helplessly as her children reach adulthood without her loving care and without each other. "Someday," she promises, "we will all be together again in a home of our own. I will come for you as soon as I can." As the inmates of the Hebrew Orphan Asylum reach their teens, they are encouraged to go on to college or to learn a trade, so they can support themselves when they leave. Although most are well prepared for their future, nothing can erase the terrors of their early life or the stigma of being an orphan. Isak and the Oranges is suitable for young people in the intermediate grades through high school. The story can be used for research on immigration, orphanages and childcare. It will appeal to adults interested in Jewish life at the turn of the last century. A glossary is provided for foreign words and unfamiliar terms. While this book is based on

By AB A beautifully written true story of a Polish Jewish family emigrating to America at the turn of the century, forced by fearful poverty to board some of the kids at the famed Hebrew Orphan Asuylum in New York. In a short, clear narrative, the author perfectly captures the voices and feelings of the children, the tormented mother who must live longing for their return and the joy of finally finding a place in the new world. This is a wonderful book for teachers and parents to share with their children, and a great gift for Chanukah. '
