From the New York Times bestselling author of Miss Brooks Loves Books! (and I don’t) comes a gentle bedtime book that includes a proven relaxation technique parents can use to help their little ones go to sleep after an exciting day.   The sun has set and dinner is done, but Fiona is still excited about the day and is not at all ready for bed.   So her mom helps her settle down with their nightly ritual of sending each part of her—from her toes to her nose—off to sleep. As Fiona relaxes her body, she recalls a marvelous day at the beach where feet were for stomping in the waves, legs were for running after cousins, tummy was for holding strawberries, and arms were for catching beach balls. And bit by bit, memory by memory, Fiona slips from a great day into a good night.   Barbara Bottner and Maggie Smith create an action-packed day to remember and provide parents with a wonderful technique for helping their own busy little ones drift peacefully off to sleep.

Feet, Go to Sleep, by Barbara Bottner

From School Library Journal K-Gr 2—Veteran author and illustrator Bottner and Smith team up to create a charming seaside bedtime story. Pajama-clad Fiona is standing on her head on her bed when Mama comes to tell her it is "time to say good night." Fiona clearly is not sleepy, but Mama suggests that she must be tired "from her head to her toes." Thus the scene is set for each successive page turn, as Fiona acquiesces and commands first her toes, then her feet, then her knees, legs and tummy, her shoulders, her arms, hands and fingers, then her mouth and finally her ears, to "go to sleep." Inset pictures on every page show Fiona gradually settling into her bed and relaxing each part of her body. The full-page illustrations behind the insets depict Fiona and her family enjoying their day at the beach. "Feet were for stomping in the waves…. Legs were for running after the cousins…. Arms were for catching the beach ball." After Fiona has focused on and relaxed every bit of her body she is able to close her eyes and drift off. Smith's colorful mixed-media illustrations exude all the fun of a summer's day spent at the ocean, topped off with a barbecue picnic dinner on the beach house lawn. The dual-scene spreads include just enough detail to juxtapose the excitement of the day with the scenario of a child learning to soothe herself to sleep. VERDICT A gentle, joyous addition to most collections.—Lynn Van Auken, Oak Bluffs School, Oak Bluffs, MA

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Cute book for bedtime By Liviania When I saw the cover of FEET, GO TO SLEEP, I knew my niece would enjoy the book. The little girl wearing glasses and doing a headstand would definitely appeal to her. (My niece is currently working on her aerial and generally terrifying any adult in her vicinity.) It's also aimed right at my nephew's age group.Barbara Bottner's text walks that little girl, Fiona, through going to sleep, body part by body part. Maggie Smith's images work well with the text. The book has a dual-image layout, where Fiona going to sleep is in a small box and the bigger image shows just how she used that body part on her seaside vacation. The text and illustrations work very well together. One touch I particularly loved is that Fiona's cousins (who she chases with her legs) are black. It's a small detail that isn't commented on, but is appreciated. Children are great at picking over the details in picture books through multiple readings.I'm sure any adult who reads kids to sleep is used to the cry of "One more book!" FEET, GO TO SLEEP makes for a good finish to bedtime reading. Fiona's method of going to sleep, bit by bit, is very helpful and soothing. (The details about how Fiona gets up to mischief during the day do keep the book from being a snore.) FEET, GO TO SLEEP is a good nighttime read.

Printz Honor and New York Times bestselling author Carolyn Mackler brings honesty and charm to this story of a friendship between two girls. Meet Hannah. Her name is a palindrome. Her birthday is on New Year’s. She wishes she had a cat. She’s medium height and a little awkward. Her life has NOT been fun lately -- her dad and stepmom are having a baby and, worst of all, her best friend next door just moved away.  Now a new girl is here, taking over her best friend’s bedroom . . . and her own identity.   Meet Emme. Her name is a palindrome. Her birthday is on New Year’s. She loves her enormous orange cat. She’s so short that last week she was mistaken for a kindergartner.  She’s found moving hard . . . but at least there’s the girl next door, Hannah. Maybe they’ll become friends?   While Hannah and Emme are alike in so many ways, they’re also different in some wrong ways, too. Is this the perfect friendship . . . or a recipe for disaster?   From award-winning writer Carolyn Mackler comes a funny, smart story about finding out who your best friends are, in good times and bad.

Best Friend Next Door, by Carolyn Mackler

From School Library Journal Gr 3–5—When Hannah's best friend and next-door neighbor Sophie moves to Canada before the start of fifth grade, Hannah can't imagine life without her. Soon a new family moves in with a girl the same age as Hannah taking over Sophie's old room. After a rocky start, Hannah and Emme become fast friends, bonding over their shared love of palindromes and peanut butter and their dislike of pizza. Not everything is rosy as Hannah struggles to accept the new addition to her family and Emme deals with bullying at school. Mackler captures the ups and downs of close friendship as Hannah and Emme's relationship is challenged as they begin to discover their differences. The girls learn what it means to be a friend, in good times and bad. Mackler depicts modern families in an unobtrusive way—Hannah's dad and stepmom are expecting a new baby and Emme has two moms. VERDICT Sure to find readers amongst young readers, this charming book will be a hit with fans of Meg Cabot's "Allie Finkle's Rules for Girls" series (Scholastic).—Sarah Polace, Cuyahoga Public Library System, OH

The blurb on the cover also gives no indication that one girl's parents are lesbians and that is a huge part of the story. There is also one bizarre page where the one girl is thinking that her friend inherited traits from her lesbian moms and I found it hard to believe that a girl this age is so ignorant of biology. Christians, Orthodox Jews and Muslims may want to skip this novel, along with anyone else who may find this book in opposition to their views.

3 of 3 people found the following review helpful. Not appropriate for our daughter. By Jeff North My daughter ordered this book after her best friend moved away, hoping to read a story about a girl going through a similar situation. Unfortunately this book focused much more on the parents than a little girl reading the book would care about. Not to mention that there is a bit of a blind side when the new girl in town has lesbian mothers. A sensitive topic that would have been nice to know about prior to our 10 year old reading the book.

By TB5 My daughter bought this book at the school book fair; she is 9 years old (4th grade) and really enjoyed it! She finished it after just a few sittings. She commented a few different times about how much she was enjoying the book and the characters. Happy girl; happy mama.

From School Library Journal PreS-Gr 3—A northern flicker, a yellow-bellied sapsucker, and other woodpeckers of the eastern deciduous forests "chip," "chop," and "wham" their way through the seasons through crisp verses and paper collages in this informational picture book. There are quiet moments as well: woodpeckers "pluck and feed" at the cherry tree while cherries dangle against an azure sky. Jenkins's illustrations are top-notch, beautifully depicting the different subspecies of woodpeckers, such as the flicker's subtle grays and golds, which contrast with its neck rings, and spotted chest. With metronomic precision, Sayre's verses describe the woodpecker's activity: "Hawk's a-hunting./Stop. Drop. Hide./Quiet/on the other side," and along with the illustrations, mostly spreads, make for engaging read-alouds. The end pages, supported by information from Cornell's Laboratory of Ornithology and other biologists, offer more information that will be key for students engaged in Common Core activities, paired with small images, which name the featured woodpeckers. Readers learn how these birds forage, build shelter and nests, avoid predators, and instruct their young, among other topics. VERDICT Lovely and exciting, this title is a great hook for young researchers, as well as fledgling ornithologists.—Teresa Pfeifer, The Springfield Renaissance School, Springfield, MA

“Sayre introduces the distinctively noisy woodpecker and the rhythmic cadences that fill [a woodpecker's] industrious life through a rhyming, sound word-filled text. . . . A Book ReviewI was so excited when I saw April Pulley Sayre was coming out with a new book on woodpeckers. I have admired her other books, checking out all that she has to offer from our local library. When I realized that I was the one with Vulture View checked out as I wondered who checked out the same books as me, I knew I had to go ahead and buy it. I like the simple, yet VERY informative writing that engages the reader. I do many nature programs for young children and adults. The words are interactive and engaging. Woodpecker Wham! delivers the same vibe. As a plus, it is set in a similar habitat to our area.I have enjoyed getting to know the different woodpeckers in our midwest area. We put suet cakes out sometimes to attract them even more, yet also see them frequently as we live in a very wooded area. I found it curious that the jacket cover is quite different from the hardcover of the book. Both are gorgeous! I am VERY impressed with the illustrator's ability to truly show the details on these birds with cut paper and paint. Check out those feet on the pileated woodpecker! It's neat to see that flash of red in the woods behind our house. Each page has about 4 lines of text, with three to four words each. It doesn't sound like much, yet each word is carefully chosen to teach about the birds. Rhyming words help with the message. The illustrations support the words with great detail. Action and/or sound words help bring the book to life as they are read, giving an interactive aspect to the pages. The author shows how red bellied woodpeckers communicate through tapping on trees, insect are eaten, holes are drilled for sap, bird clean, hollow cleaned out, eat berries, babies crack eggs, feeding fledglings, storing acorns, and making a hole in a tree. I am amazed at how much she packs in with so few words. At the end, she gives more detailed information on woodpeckers in general, sharing information on chisel shaped beaks, how they hitch and hop, send instant messages, use their tongues, how seeds pass through their digestive tract, how many survive in one forest, attracting woodpeckers to our yards, keeping secure homes, raising families, and more! There are also labeled illustrations of all the woodpeckers that are highlighted at the back of the book.Personally, I will use this book for my own understanding of woodpeckers and in programs with children in preschool through grade 4 or so, realizing that it is a picture book. While it's simple, it teaches so much. A simple read aloud can have a big impact on children. I read her book, Vulture View, on a hike with adults one time and a turkey vulture soared above our heads. I could see the adults gliding along with the turkey vulture as I read. Reading these books to adults can reinforce the concepts presented.http://insideoutsidemichiana.blogspot.com/2015/05/woodpecker-wham-book-review.html

We received about 10 books on the same day and this wasn't the first (or second) book in the group to catch his eye but after a few readings he has started requesting this book specifically. It now holds his attention for the entire book. I am also going to be using it for a letter of the week book (once we get to "W").
