A detailed guide to everything cosplay By DianaDiamond65 When it comes to fandom, I'm enthusiastic and I've always wanted to get involved, but I'm admittedly uncreative in the worst way. A lot of my friends are into cosplay and making costumes for events, so I decided to give this a read and see if it sparked something within me to get creative and bring my hobby to the next level.I love that this book covers the fact that being a fan is a passive undertaking, and that the creative portion of cosplaying is a challenge. Especially for someone like me with little imagination about how to make a great costume happen. I enjoyed learning about the history of cosplay as well; its really interesting to see where things began and how that shapes the way we enjoy being ACTIVE fans (as opposed to passive ones) in present-day. All of the photos are a lot of fun to look at; sometime that really gives this ebook the character is needed. What I got this book for—and what I enjoyed the most—was the in-depth information about how to plan a costume from someone who has clearly designed, created, and showcased more than a few. The common mistakes that were discussed were very helpful; things like the time needed, typical costs, and the upheaval that can be caused by subpar quality parts for your costume are all things I desperately needed insight on.I'm pretty good with makeup (my only strong suit when it comes to cosplay) but there are so many great tips for elaborate special FX makeup, such as the use of fake scars and silicone pieces. I loved learning a little bit more that I can implement in my costumes. If you're looking for something that discusses all of the ins and outs of cosplay, creating a costume, and preparing for conventions, this is a really interesting read. It contains so many practical pieces of wisdom that I never would have thought of until I ran into expensive or embarrassing problems.

I am so impressed with the depth that the authors have gone with each area that they cover here. I thought I had an understanding of it all, but I had no idea all the history, backstory, and the fascinating subcultures that are delved into and explored with an enlightening introduction of all things Cosplay. I really like all the different outfits, wigs and props, but the thing I’m most interested in is making my own outfits and even looking to make stuff for conventions and event work, maybe to sell. The book has idea after fantastic idea for patterns, and a great look at equipment and tools to help you out with all your outfit ideas and extras. Such a great book for all this, but then you get to the chapter on convention survival and you really get the inside scoop, I will be able to double my convention time, maybe even more, with all the helpful tricks and tips that are covered here and I can’t wait.

I think cosplay is very interesting and I've wanted to get into it for some time, but I don't know where to start. This is perfect if you're like me! The book is divided into five parts, for ease of navigation and just general organizational purposes: for example, part one is just on the background of cosplay, part two is on planning, part three covers construction... and so on. I was really amazed with how detailed this book is, and it even covers information on cosplay conventions! There are also plenty of photographs and captions that illustrate the information presented in the book. I also found it to be very easy to read. This book has really given me a sense of where to start when it comes to cosplay, and it is less intimidating now that I've read this book.

Introduction

It is ten years since the first person arrived in my marital therapy room having told their partner: 'I love you, but I'm not in love with you.' I wrote an article for the Observer newspaper in the UK about couples splitting up, not because they hated each other but because one partner had fallen out of love.

The response was overwhelming and I was asked to write the book: I Love You But I'm Not in Love with You: Seven steps to saving your relationship. It turned out to be not just a UK phenomenon: the book has been translated into German, French, Italian, Chinese, Japanese, Swedish, Greek, Turkish―in fact, fifteen languages and counting. I was also the first UK-based self-help writer to be published by HCI Books in the USA (the publishing house behind the bestselling 'Chicken Soup for the Soul' series).

Back in 2006, when the book was published, I thought I'd written everything that needed be said on 'I love you, but ….' However, it was aimed at both the person who had fallen out of love and their partner. I didn't cover the differences between when a woman falls out of love and when a man falls out of love, because I didn't want to make generalizations about all women this or all men that. My sample of cases were all couples who were committed enough to saving their relationship to phone up Relate (the UK's leading couple-counseling charity), book an appointment for an initial assessment, and wait the weeks and sometimes months to start on-going counseling. However, desperate letters to my website (www.andrewgmarshall.com) told a different story―about men and women who had told their partners they'd fallen out of love and either immediately or a few days later declared that the relationship was over. They couldn't 'change' their feelings, they needed 'space,' and the children 'should be told.' There was 'no point' going into counseling and if the person who had fallen out of love did reluctantly agree, it was only to tick a box that 'we tried everything.' These correspondents had found my book incredibly helpful and drawn hope from my message that 'you can fall back in love again,' but wanted to know how to communicate this to their partner.

The more letters I received and the more stories I heard, I began to realize that it was a completely different experience being a man, rather than a woman, being told 'I love you, but ….' Time and again, these men were isolated and didn't know where to turn for support. They had always taken their emotional problems to their wives. They had friends, but they were more likely to offer a beer than advice or a chance to talk. So I decided to write a book aimed specifically at men, My Wife Doesn't Love Me Any More, to help with their sense of isolation, to offer emotional support and to provide a practical program for rescuing their relationships.

I thought women didn't need a book specifically targeted at them. They have plenty of friends to offer support and, while media aimed at men is full of sport, politics, and business, women's magazines, TV programs and websites are overflowing with relationship advice. However, sometimes, these pluses turn into negatives. Talking to friends can fan the flames of panic and lots of women have told me that they don't want to confide in their friends (who sometimes turn them into a living soap opera). Although it's great to have lots of heartfelt advice―from magazines and the internet―it's often contradictory or falls into the 'dump him' or 'all men are cheaters' category. Obviously, that's not much help if you still love your husband and desperately want to save your marriage.

I knew I had to write a book targeted specifically at women, when I counseled one couple where the wife was so consumed by anger that she could not hear the underlying messages from her husband. Certainly, on the surface, they sounded bleak: 'I don't know what I want' and 'I'm not certain that we can rescue our marriage.' He had also moved out of the house because he couldn't stand the rows anymore. In their counseling sessions, the angrier she became the more he disappeared into his shell. The less he said, the more her overactive imagination stepped into the breach. Instead of asking what he felt, she told him what he felt (and found the most negative interpretation possible). Not surprisingly, her husband either became defensive or thought 'what's the point' and in the counseling sessions he clammed up, and during the rest of the week hung up the phone on her or walked away.

However, when she was calmer, she began to interpret everything in a slightly more nuanced way. When he said 'I don't know what I want,' she could reply 'I'm not certain either because all this is doing my head in too' and we were able to build a small bridge toward recognizing their similarities and starting to work as a team. At this point, she could also look past 'I'm not certain that we can rescue our marriage' to something more positive: 'we are still talking and actively trying to turn this relationship around.' However, all too often her righteous anger (because she had been hurt and rejected) would often tip over into ranting (which simply made her husband clam up again) and her helpful desire to understand would tip into overanalyzing (which made her either panic or despair). All too often, a breakthrough in resolving a tricky issue―for example weekend access to the children―would be undone during the week by her fears and anxieties. At this point, I realized that she needed not just weekly counseling but coaching too.

So what's the difference? Counseling is about helping someone open up, explore their feelings, and ultimately to find their own solutions. It works best when the peak of a crisis is over and the dust has settled a bit. However, my female client did not need to 'get in touch' with her anxiety, but to manage it better. And that's where coaching comes in. Coaching is about sharing knowledge (gained from previous experience in the trenches of a problem). It offers practical suggestions and helps you to rehearse your messages to your partner. Ultimately, coaching is about keeping you calm, focused, and stopping you from turning a crisis into a disaster.

In an ideal world, if your partner has fallen out of love, you should be in couple counseling together, working through the issues, as well as getting individual emotional support. Unfortunately, we don't live in an ideal world. However, my book I Love You But I'm Not in Love with You could be your couple counseling and this book your personal love coach. (When I counsel women face-to-face, I often write down key ideas to take away from the session and I've done something similar with the 'Love Coach's Three Key Things to Remember' at the end of each chapter.)

Ultimately, it doesn't matter if you read Part One of this book or I Love You But I'm Not in Love with You first. However, if you're holding both in your hands (or have them on your e-reader), I would read I Love You But I'm Not in Love with You first. It provides a good introduction to many of the techniques that I will be using in this book but, more importantly, I would like you to read it before handing it over to your husband. (If he's not a reader, I have recorded an audiobook version.) In this way, if he is willing to read or listen to it, you'll be able to discuss any points that he raises and do the exercises together.

Moving onto Part Two of the book where I look at whether there's another woman on the scene and how to combat her influence, it's six years since I wrote How Can I Ever Trust You Again? to spread the word that marriages can recover from infidelity and couples can build stronger and better relationships. To be honest, I thought I'd covered almost everything that needed to be said about infidelity too. However, I still worked for Relate and we tended to see people after the immediate crisis had passed. In other words, the affair had been discovered but the couple were committed enough to their relationship to book an appointment and go on a waiting list, before finally starting work with me. I hardly ever saw people right in the eye of the storm: unsure whether their partner would stay or go or whose partner kept denying there'd even been any wrongdoing. However, desperate letters to my website told of the drama of packed and then unpacked bags, the gut-wrenching pain of being home alone while your partner was out womanizing, and the frustration of knowing that something distasteful was happening while your partner was flatly denying it.

Many of my correspondents were having counseling―and it helped take the edge off their pain―but they needed something more. They each wanted to understand what was going on inside their partner's head; they needed advice on how to communicate more effectively and how to keep calm while the world was conspiring to turn them mad. In other words, they needed coaching as much as counseling.

There's another reason why I've decided to write this book. My casebook for How Can I Ever Trust You Again? was based mainly on infidelity in the late 1980s and early 1990s. For much of that time, it was easier to draw the line under an affair. Cell phones were rare and the internet was something for geeks. However, in the years since I wrote the book, smartphones have become standard and social networking has taken off and added a whole new complexity, with the affair partner (or ex-affair partner) able to come into your home at any time―via text, email, tweet, or Facebook message. With 24/7 communication, if your partner's resolution slips for just a moment, he can be in contact instantly with the other woman and your marriage drops down into a fresh circle of hell. So while in the past, the journey to recovery might have been stop-and-start, today it can seem like you're constantly being sent back to the beginning (or never even leaving it).

Although I don't have any easy answers, I can break your problems down into more manageable chunks. I can help you to keep hold of your sanity, can explain your options and advise on when to make a strategic withdrawal and when to fight on.

If the affair has supposedly ended, I would read How Can I Ever Trust You Again? first―even though you suspect or fear that your husband and the other woman are still in contact. It will give you a better idea of the journey ahead and of whether the pitfalls are part of the natural recovery process or because the affair has been rekindled.

If your partner will not admit to an affair, has confessed (or made a partial confession) but doesn't know what he wants, or is determined to leave with his new 'love,' please start with this book because it focuses on finding a way through an immediate crisis.

How to use this book

Although this book is called My Husband Doesn't Love Me and He's Texting Someone Else it will help even if there is not another woman involved. It's perfectly possible that your husband feels that his life has hit a brick wall, he's tried to sort out his unhappiness and you've either failed to hear how serious he is (and despite trying harder everything's slipped back to normal) or he's kept his problems to himself. Perhaps he's depressed and feels leaving and starting again is the only viable option.

However, over the past thirty years, I've counseled thousands of men and women who have fallen out of love and, while only a minority of women are involved with another man, the majority of men are 'getting advice' or 'involved' to some degree with another woman. Some husbands will have stepped over the boundary from imagining what life might be like with her into sending flirty texts, developing an emotional attachment, or even starting a full-blown affair.

Whatever the circumstances, it still feels incredibly bleak: he doesn't see a future together, he wants to tell the children, and to split up your happy family.

Fortunately, I have a message of hope. It is possible to turn around your relationship and build a better and stronger marriage. However, it is important that you stay calm, listen to what he's saying, and not let overthinking turn a problem into a full-blown crisis. So even if there is another woman on the scene, please don't skip Part One, because it will explain how you got to this point―and the building blocks for rescuing your relationship are the same whether there is someone else or not. If you just suspect another woman, please give your husband the benefit of the doubt while you're reading Part One, since it will make it easier to step into his shoes and understand him. It will also help you to take this situation not quite so personally. OK, I know that's a tough ask. Of course, it feels personal: he doesn't love you. But this crisis says just as much about him: how he deals with problems and conflict, and how he was brought up. I know it's hard to feel compassionate toward your husband―especially as you long just to shake some sense into him―but it will pay dividends. If you can be kinder to your husband, you are also going to be kinder on yourself too and that's important because the journey is going to be tough.

If your husband has spoken up before his unhappiness tipped over into some form of betrayal or you've spotted the problems early enough to nip it in the bud, there is no need to torture yourself by reading Part Two. If you are unlucky enough to find your husband has become emotionally attached to another woman, Part Two of this book will prove invaluable. If it's another man, I've written a special appendix, which includes other women's experiences and my advice.

An apology

I have used the word 'husband' rather than 'partner' in the title because I wanted to immediately indicate that this book was targeted at women. However, let me be clear: this book is for all women in committed relationships―whether married or not.

I have also had to make some blanket statements about men and women―even though I know there are countless exceptions. Having said that, there is often truth in generalizations. So even if something strikes you as 'yes but …,' please be patient with me because even if you don't fit precisely into this category, it will illuminate how you might be coming across to your partner, and sometimes an extreme example will demonstrate more clearly what may need to be changed.

By princesspinto ***2.5***Please read Frostbite before Poison.Books like these frustrate me and they are hard to rate. As I love the series but, novella's like this disappoint me. I'd been waiting for this ever since I finished reading [...]. Cuz for those of us who had been following Elena's journey to becoming a rider and beyond we all wanted to know what happens to her as she is now princess and well, with Blake as her dent and not to mention the impending war. I felt this novella came up very short. Oh don't get me wrong it was interesting to read it overall. I just would have priced it lower (or given free) as there was definitely not enough matter/plot to justify the cost IMO. That's my only gripe.Poison starts few weeks after FB ends and begins with Sir Robert's POV of how he's been dealing with post Elena's revelation and Blake missing. I liked getting a glimpse into his head as he is fiercely loyal to his king as well as his family. He considers Elena family as well and is always looking out for her. Plus, let's just say that he believes that she's the only salvation his son can hope for. If only stupid Blake would admit to it.Elena, is less whiny overall in this novella. She is totally fed up with being a princess and feels she is not cut out for it. She is also dealing with missing Cara and Lucian. I felt that she has not forgiven Blake completely for the part he played and feels that things could have been avoidable if he just had come forward. Who could blame her? I also noticed that her character was a bit stronger in this versus in previous books. She misses Blake too in her way but, feels horrified for feeling those feelings. She's frustrated with him as he can feel her completely and listen in to her thoughts whereas, she cannot. Their connection is also getting very strong despite not being dented. There was a very interesting development rearding their connection towards the end of Poison and I'm curious to see how it pans out in Moon Breeze. Emotionally, I felt, Elena had to deal with a lot and one could see that she was trying to do her best despite her stupid dragon not coming forth. I really liked reading more about Lady Catherine via her journal as Elena is finding out more about her mother/father.Blake, aka douchebag rubicon, and her dent. He is still MIA in this novella except for a brief "visit". I can see that he's a complicated person dragon however, to me, I felt that we never get enough of him in any book. I am still trying to figure out what is going through his head or what is his problem overall. Ever since Firebolt he's been a douche to Elena (except for the few months in Frostbite) and we never get to the depth of his emotions for anything or anyone except he is always angry and can turn evil. I want to understand him a bit more so I can try to figure out the whole mess. I also cannot see how he's going to turn around and be in love with Elena in just 1 book? Am I the only one who thinks that?? We all know that Blake and Elena are dents. I would feel unhappy if we don't get to "see" the change in him slowly in Moon Breeze. I was hoping that in Poison it would have started so as to lay the base for their relationship in Moon Breeze. However, that was not meant to be :(.Romance, well, we have a new love interest for Elena and I did not see it coming. There were no hints in previous books. To me, it was quite unnecessary/unexpected and I just don't see the point for it. Granted it didn't go anywhere due to well her being Rubicon's rider. Nevermind that Rubicon doesn't care for her at all...so poor Elena doesn't have much choice. So, I'm not sure what is going on here and whether we'll see more of it in Moon Breeze or not??Sammy, Becky, George and Dean are all in here and as always supportive to Elena. They are all frawsome! and BFFs. I always liked their interaction and it is always fun to read their parts.Overall, I enjoyed it as we saw somewhat how Elena was dealing post princess revelation. I did find several things repetitive as it had already been mentioned in Frostbite and we had to read few chapters again on it in Poison. I was expecting this novella as a base set up for Moon Breeze especially, where Elena and Blake were concerned. And, it didn't deliver. Yes, this novella does end on an abrupt cliffhanger.Ch 1 of MB is at the end of Poison hmmm...it will definitely get interesting as Blake returns and is a douche yet again. I'm looking forward to Moon Breeze though. I definitely want to see how it pans out and hopefully we will not be disappointed.

Poison is a novella that takes place between Frostbite and the upcoming and semi-final installment, Moonbreeze. While there was no epic battle, I really love these novellas because I feel like they give Ms. Woods an opportunity to focus on character development. I still remember building my strongest connection with Sammy, Becky and Elena while reading Venom. The story takes place a few weeks after Frostbite. Elena is not having an easy time with her new role as Paegeia's long lost princess. Her advisers seems more concerned with keeping Elena from her old life and controlling her every move, from the way she dresses to how she speaks. She feels lost without her friends, Cara and her dragon. Elena begins to revert back to her old ways by becoming passive but don't worry, the courageous one is still in there. Speaking of her dragon, he is more stubborn than ever. I joined Elena every time she called him "idiot" or "my stupid dragon" because lets face it, it's true and even more so in Poison. In Venom, we learn more about Elena's parents through Queen Cathrine's journals, travel to tropical paradise within Paegeia, and learn more about King Helmut's dragon. This novella did not disappoint and if you're an fan of the Dragonian Series, I highly recommend you read. I wish I could say it helps satisfy until Moonbreeze's release but unfortunately, it will leave you wanting more.More Blake Please.

Pretty much a repetitive from the other book on how Blake continued to treat/ignored Elena like s*** and talked about on how her parents fell in love. Wasted money and time. No actions or plot whatsoever. Just a a lot of gibberish dialogue which makes me not want to buy the next book. This just makes me hate Blake more. Blake only showed up once in the book. Totally disappointed. Then, a teaser of the next book starts with Blake making out with Tabitha and again treating Elena like crap. Really? I really don't want to read the next book now since it will show how Elena will just accept Blake easily after the way he treated her. Don't waste your money. I just flipped through the pages.

Bought it again to read to the kids and had to get another one of the series. This one was great. The kids want me to buy more of the Alvin books, which of course I will be doing!

My 10-Year-Old Won't Let Me Stop Reading By Fred Fandango I have been reading to my 10-year-old son each day before he goes to bed for as long as he (and I) can remember. We particularly enjoy the Alvin Fernald series. Alvin and his friend are just the right age for my son to identify with. And, the kind of mischief they get into seems to hold his attention. While not great literature, I also enjoy the story. Mayor For A Day is one of the best of the bunch. The story is quite realistic; Alvin as mayor is a great hero; and the reader learns a bit about how a city works and the downsides of politics. The only part I don't like about the Alvin Fernald series is that Alvin always seems to keep his schemes secret from his parents even though his sister (The Pest) has the good sense to want to let them know. Clearly, she is the one who is making the right decision but she always defers to Alvin. Perhaps the story wouldn't work if Alvin spilled the beans as none of his schemes would survive parental scrutiny. Nevertheless, I don't think secrecy from parents is a good lesson to teach.Well, there is one more problem with this book: getting out of the room at the end of a chapter when it is time to go to bed. My son demands that we read another and he grabs me if I try to leave! :-)

Payne an exceptional book about the lives of our service men who served our country and you and I and the trauma that have had to carry with them afterwards and how they over came the terrible load. I really enjoyed it and would without hesitation recommend it. It ia an easy and even emotional read. A series of relatively short stories on the men's experiences and those who helped them.

Francisco's Kites / Las cometas de Francisco, by Alicia Klepeis

From School Library Journal Gr 2–4—Salvadoran immigrant Francisco misses his hometown where he used to fly kites with all his friends. After moving to Chicago, neither he nor his mom can afford to buy a kite. Francisco scours his neighborhood for usable junk, and before long he collects enough material to make a kite. A gentleman from church is so impressed by Francsico's resourcefulness that he commissions 20 more recycled masterpieces at four dollars apiece. His new enterprise gives Francisco the confidence to start a kite-flying club at school and make new friends. Undercuffler's colorful and distinct illustrations will entice children to try designing and building their own kites. This bilingual story's emphasis isn't on the hardships new immigrants face but rather on a young boy using his love of kites as a coping device in an unfamiliar environment. VERDICT Pairing this engaging title with nonfiction selections, such as Norman Schmidt's Best Ever Paper Kites (Sterling, 2003), will enhance classroom and/or parent/child experiences.—Mary Margaret Mercado, Pima County Public Library, Tucson, AZ

Review "A resourceful boy in a new town discovers a talent for giving old scraps flight in this immigrant s story. The line-and-watercolor illustrations capture his moods elegantly....The kites themselves, with their patchwork patterns, are gloriously rendered with depth and variety. Francisco s transformation from pensive newcomer to entrepreneurial kite master is inspiring and well-detailed in this successful slice of life." --Kirkus Reviews

Author deftly waves together a variety of topics in this dual language book By Latin@s in Kid Lit I love how Alicia Klepeis so deftly and unassumingly weaves together a variety of topics in this dual language book. With themes like homesickness, immigration, recycling, ingenuity, and family, Francisco’s Kites might easily become cluttered or scattered, but it’s not. Instead, it’s a simple story about a boy who creatively channels his past experiences – flying kites in his former home in El Salvador – to establish himself in windy Chicago, spend quality time with his mom, meet new people, and work on saving the earth. Readers will enjoy following the inventive Francisco, learning about kites, and maybe even picking up some information about Salvadoran food (pupusas – yum!). Meanwhile, Gary Undercuffler’s charmingly retro – but still fresh, clean, and colorful – illustrations add to the airy, buoyant tone of the book.Another perk of this book is its message about recycling, which is delivered clearly without being heavy-handed. As they observe Francisco resourcefully collecting trash and other used objects to make kites, readers will learn about repurposing, a recycling strategy that anyone can try. These days, we know about the benefits of recycling, and no doubt children constantly hear about it at school. But many neighborhoods, towns, and even larger cities don’t have accessible, user-friendly services and resources like curbside pickup or community recycling bins. If kids don’t have access to these services at home, it’s important for them to learn about other options – like repurposing, which can provide them with fun, easy ways to help the earth and feel like they’re making a difference. When young readers pick up a book like Francisco’s Kites, who knows how they’ll be inspired?

A multicultural children's book with an inspirational message By Tiffiny Francisco's Kites is a bilingual children’s book about a boy who uses ingenuity and perseverance to solve a problem. Francisco and his mom have emigrated to the U.S. from El Salvador, and among other things, he misses playing with his kites. His mom can't afford to buy him one, so he gathers discarded materials from around the neighborhood and makes his own kites...which turn out to be a great success for many reasons. There are so many things I like about this picture book. It’s bilingual with English text on the top half of the page and Spanish text on the bottom. The main lesson is about working hard to solve your own problem. It shows the value of recycling (or upcycling). The illustrations are colorful and accurately portray the events of the story (both in the U.S. and El Salvador). This book is recommended for children ages 4-8, but I think you could easily extend it up to age 10 or so. This would be a great book to add to a collection of high quality bilingual children’s books, but I think it would be great for all children. I would also recommend it to teachers and parents teaching about Hispanic culture or recycling.

By SunshineRose “Francisco’s Kites” is a bilingual story of a young boy and his mother who moved to the big city of Chicago from a small village in El Salvador. Francisco loves kites but with his mother unable to afford to get him one, Francisco decides to make his own using scraps found on his walks around town. Before long he has created kites of beauty that make him forget his new life in a strange city. One day, while flying one of them, he receives an offer he can’t refuse which changes his life.Addressing the homesickness felt by children who find themselves in a setting completely different from everything they’d known, “Francisco’s kites” addresses their fears while allowing them to find an escape through creating kites to chase away their blues.Recommended for ages 6-9.
