There's a lot going on, yet despite the convoluted backstory and the dreaded "terragogg" (human) degradation of the oceans, everything gets a light, surface treatment. There's little character development, beyond the protagonist, or sense of real danger, and even the spells that abound seem to exist for expediency and nick-of-time escapes. 50 of 50 people found the following review helpful. Fun story, but overwhelming languages! By Jamie E. Okay-actual rating is a 3.5.This was a decent underwater fantasy-adventure that has potential. And yet for all the good it is, there is also some head-spinning vocabulary.Seraphina is the heir the kingdom and her whole life seems set before her before and attack destroys her apparent path. But just before the attack she has a 'dream' of a prophecy she must help with. For she is one of 6 that must save the sea.This books word choice and creation had me utterly overwhelmed at first. We are given a lot of made up words, terms, names and places. Seriously, every paragraph seemed to have at least 3 new words. This continues throughout the books but is a little less overwhelming thank goodness. But the beginning was so bad I almost DNFed this. Some were just a play on words (like Merlfriend instead of Girlfriend) . And then others are real words in all sorts of languages! We are given Italian, Qin, Arabic, Brazilian slang, Portuguese, Romanian, Greek...It gets worse... we also have several made up languages including Mermish, Dracdemara, Rurus, and more!! You know Scuttle from "Disney's The Little Mermaid" and how he calls a fork an dinglehopper? Well there is A LOT of that type of wording happening and it leaves us guessing what they are talking about. Sometimes i just gave up and went with it like I would a Dr Seuss book where it just isn't meant to make sense.Leaving all that aside, the adventure is quite good. Although I must say the attack on Seraphina's home had me sad. I always put mermaids in a happy place so reading about them dying left a pout on my face. Some of the imagery is pretty like when we hear about Seraphina's room or when they change her look to disguise her.Seraphina is a nice mermaid but very insecure to her role. Neela, her best friend and companion, is a stronger character that I really liked. We get other characters including Blu, Ling and many others.There is betrayal, death and action...a small dash of romance...loyalty and friends...all mixed together is a "Save the World" adventure.I will read the next one. I am curious how it ends but I do warn new readers, be sure to have patience and focus when you start reading this!*I received a copy of this book from Disney-Hyperion in exchange for a fair and honest review. All opinions expressed are strictly my own.*

Disney-Hyperion surprised me with a copy of this book, and I almost decided not to read it, since it was an unsolicited copy. I have a ton of May review books (especially May 6th releases), and the ones I requested get priority. However, I couldn’t resist the siren’s call of fantasy, even if it isn’t the usual type of fantasy I love (epic fantasy).I am pleased to say that overall, I enjoyed this book. It was relatively short, and there was a lot of action and revelations and things occurring. Okay, so I found the plot a little bit generic. The uniqueness of the characters and world-building (for the most part) sort of made up for the cliché plot.The thing I really liked about this book is that it focused more on friendship than romance. At first, it seems like the romance will be more important than anything else. Serafina is preparing herself to be shown as the next heir of Miromara, and to exchange marital vows with the crown prince of the kingdom’s choosing – Prince Mahdi. The prince and Serafina were always arranged to be married, but they fell in love after a visit or two years ago. Years later, Mahdi has changed, and is now a player and a jerk.So, you would think that the romance was at the forefront. Serafina is still very much in love with Mahdi, he’s in love with her, and they’re getting married, no matter what. But terrible things have happened, are happening, and will happen to the mer kingdoms. Someone is taking merpeople, and a monster has been unleashed. Sera, her friend Neela, and four other girls must are called via dream to come together to fight and take back the sea.Friendship is key in this book. The bond between Sera and Neela is unshakable, and I love that this is an important aspect of the book. I know that we will see more of the six girls together in the next four books – they only come together in one place at the end of this book.I love how well-characterized the girls are. Each girl is different, and fits their respective “gifts”. We get to know Sera the most – she is selfless and responsible, cautious and brave. Neela is fiery and hilarious – I LOVED reading the parts of the book that involved her actions and dialogue.I’m hoping to see more from the romance in the next few books. It wasn't huge in this book, but it is still important. I have a feeling that someone in actually someone else in disguise… ahhh, I want to say more but that would be spoiling things! I shan't give anything away! Now, onto the plot, and what I didn't like.What I Did Not Like:As I mentioned before, I found the overall plot of the book and series to be cliche. People are murdered or taken for the greed of another, a giant monster exists and is out for blood. Several teenagers must save the world. It’s very overdone and cliche, but especially in certain types of fantasy. The paranormal type of fantasy (like this book) always seems to follow this plot, to the T. Especially with the monster part. And the fact that each teenager has a unique skill or power.You might say that every book or plot is a bit of a variation of another, but I find that this type of plot is highly power in paranormal and fantasy novels, and one after the other after another isn't always smart.Would I Recommend It:I would definitely recommend this book to fans of fantasy novels. It’s not the typical type of fantasy that I read and love, but then, I love most types of fantasy. Mermaid books aren't really my thing – I kind of liked Anna Banks’ series (here’s hoping Of Neptune is really good, to redeem the series), and I wasn't a huge fan of Lies Beneath by Anne Greenwood Brown. But this one was pretty great! So fantasy lovers, paranormal lovers, this is one for you! If you have a copy, or were already planning on reading it, definitely do not hesitate to do so!Rating:3.5 stars -> rounded up to 4 stars. This was a pretty great start to a new series! I will definitely be catching the sequel, and most likely the two books after them. I cannot wait to see what the imprint of Disney-Hyperion will be! This is the first book to be published by the imprint, so that’s exciting.

How does it make you feel?The author, Leela Hope, has written a lovely story about Ernie and Henry the elephants and their friends. Ernie the elephant was a nice elephant, he was a small elephant,mbut he made up for it in his kindness. On the other hand, Henry was a pain in the neck. He was always boasting that the was the best, the best at everything. In fact he was such a boaster, his other friends got tired of him, and they would not play games with him. One day, Henry asked Ernie to race with him. Henry said he was sure to win. Ernie saud he would, indeed, race with him, but if he won, he could no longer boast to all their friends. Ernie had a plan. When you read this book you will see who won the race, and what plan Ernie had.Parents/teachers will enjoy reading this book to their children. The children will be able to talk about friends that boast and tend to bully, and make suggestions that might make it easier for everyone. Children do not know how to help their friends who are being bullied, and this is a good time to discuss what is happening and what to do. There are several pluses in this book, one: the book is written in rhyme, and everyone enjoys reading in rhyme. Two: there are lessons to be learned, and this is an excellent manner in which children learn. The illustrations are bright, colorful and vivid. They depict the adventures of Henry and Ernie. I liked this book because of the writing particularly for children, and the lessons learned. Note: a complimentary copy of this book was provided to read and review.Recommended. prisrob 05-19-15

By Grady Harp San Diego, California Author Leela Hope studied English Literature at Berkeley, earning a degree in 1989. Her writing covers a span of several genres, but she always returns to her first love, children's fiction. And it is there that her star shines brightest. Always finding something unique on which to base her stories, she makes each tale a learning experience for children as well as offering some pointers for parenting!Two different elephants who couldn't be more different! Ernie the elephant is small but has a big heart. Henry the elephant is a pompous braggart and tease. When Henry plays at school he pulls ticks and brags about he is the best. But ne day Henry is running track and trips when all the others go away. He asks Ernie to race him, knowing and bragging that he will win. Ernie agrees to race him and if Ernie wins he makes Henry promise he will no longer tease others. Henry boastfully agrees. The race is on: Henry runs faster but tires, while Ernie starts slower but saves his energy to the end and Ernie is the final winner. The others al cheer that Ernie is the winner, and Henry is teased. He's learned his lesson and asks Ernie for forgiveness. Alls well that ends well!The fun story teaches some fine lessons about being thoughtful, courteous and not bragging but always sharing. Another little winner from Leela. Grady Harp, May 15

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. How Henry changed from being a bragger! By Angela I enjoyed this ebook and found it has a very good moral in it for children and up. It tells how it felt for Henry when he lost a race with Ernie and how before the race Ernie after being asked to race against Henry made him promise not to be bragging anymore if he won. Who do you think won? I would recommend this book above all to young kids but not just young kids but those older too who have not yet learned this lesson. I feel that this ebook belongs in the five star ratings because not only does it have great colorful illustrations but also has a very good moral in this story. It’s the year 2018 and middle aged Andy Johnston is taking his normal mid-day walk along Princess Street in Edinburgh when he stops to gaze in a jeweler’s shop window. There quite near to the window is the most unusual fob watch he has ever seen. It is gold, and the backing is a mixture of Royal Stewart Tartan and gold. The longish chain, meant for hanging from the waistcoat pocket, is also gold. He is intensely attracted to this watch, especially the gold roman figures, and black hands. He enters the shop to enquire how much it would cost to purchase. Regardless of the price which is indeed high, he pulls out his credit card and makes the purchase. Had he been aware in advance of the secret powers of this watch and of the troubles ahead, he might have thought more than twice about this purchase. Because mainly of the price one has to pay to own it–it has sat in this window for a very long time. The Jeweler warns him as he writes out the guarantee and sales slip, that he might just regret having bought it, as time passes. Strange occurrences begin as soon as he sets foot outside of the shop and makes his way proudly to the nearby park below Edinburgh Castle. The famous big Ben clock in London normally ticks on and on, through time. Every hour, on the hour, it sends its loud gongs across London, announcing the time, and almost deafening those who happen to be near. The population of London set their watches and clocks daily to Big Ben, and would be completely lost without it. Further away in Edinburgh Scotland, high up in the Castle rock stands the big one o’clock gun- A big cannon that goes off regularly at one o’clock, every day, freezing people to the spot for a few moments, and rattling old people’s bones with the vibration it causes, whilst they also check their watches, and in the houses, all clocks are set the same way. The gun resounds across the City of Edinburgh, and will be missed terribly if it does not go off. As we live with this kind of repetition, so our lives are dependent on the repetition of our heart beats. The day that beat stops forever, our lives are over, just as when the clocks stop, time stands still. One of Nostradamus’s predictions are about to come true. Andy is unaware of the disruption of those elements his watch is about to cause, and innocently shows it off to his friends in the park. The watch enjoys its new found freedom of not being cooped up in the Jeweler’s shop window and big changes are made to time. Andy and his wife Amy Johnston live in an old Edinburgh City Tenement, above which the Castle looms. They rely each day on the one o’clock gun going off in the castle, even though the loud boom rocks the dishes on the kitchen shelf, and just about bursts their ear drums when it goes off, Edinburgh would not be the same without it. So far time has passed over Nostradamus’s predictions, of life and the world coming to an end. Panic strikes in cities all over the United Kingdom, when suddenly, and unexpectedly, Big Ben begins losing time, and the one o clock gun in Edinburgh fires too soon. There must be a reason! All clocks begin to lose time or stop altogether. When people begin to keel over and die of obvious sudden and unexplained heart failure, panic takes hold. Andy and Amy eventually can’t take it anymore when their neighbours begin fighting because they don’t understand what is happening to them. They then decide to pack a few bags and travel to Amy’s sister Ellie who lives in the Northern Hebrides. Andy has time to think when on the train, and eventually realizes the meaning of strange dreams he has been having, and discovers he has oracle powers. He actually had predicted the standing still of time, when he was a boy, and now it is all coming to light. It kinda makes me feel alive and hopeful despite of all negativity. This book is going to be a hit! I finished couple of pages but i still cannot get enough of it. I love how the story began and ended. It was a nice story of love and affection. i am extremely delighted!

It's very interesting and very enjoyable to read right from the first page. It has a very nice story and plot too. If you like western romance type of books, then I recommend you to read this one too.

By Amazon Customer I read this entire series recently and liked the books Throughout the series, there seemed to be gaps, actions that didn't seem realistic in the circumstances within stories. But, I did like them and read all the ones that were on Amazon at that point. Now that I am reading the Morris Fenris series, Taking the High Road, I understand why. This entire series by Paige Powers mimics the Fenris books, plot, characters and story line. The location of the family plantation and surname of the brothers may have changed, along with the characters' first names, but the plot and main componants, even the descriptions of the problem, character descriptions throughout the entire series by Powers so far is pretty much a copy of the Fenris series. Book 1-daughter of a madam returning from Switzerland, discovers parents died and receives inheritance and moves to CA to open a school. Pinkerton man involved as well as greedy fiancee. Book -Widower with a child rescues an Indian/Mexican girl who was kidnapped by man who bothers her daily at the town bazaar.Same thing continues with the next four bools. If I remember correctly, Powers' are a tad gentler and without the use of cursing found in the Fenris books. The Powers books had more modern language that wouldn't have been used in that time period. Fenris books strongly exaggerate the Southern dialect, about to the point of being insulting to anyone of Southern descent.Overall, I did like the Powers books and had been looking forward to the stories of the rest of the brothers. However, given that each of the Powers books was released two to four months following the corresponding Fenris books, it really makes me question them and the authenticity of the author's (Powers) work. Fenris has recently released more of the series, so I look forward to seeing if more come out in the Powers series now (esp since I wanted to read them already) and see if they continue to follow the characters and plots of the Fenris series to complete the storyline of all the brothers.The dates I refer to are ones shown on Amazon. This is too close a coincidenceso are Powers and Fenris the same writer with a gentler tone in the Powers set after complaints about the cursing or did Powers copy Fenris' storyline? Did they both just get lucky and the stories happen to follow the same path through the whole series? Would have rated higher if not for the questions. Very interested in other readers think about this.

By Anon I finished the first volume of the novel only to realize that both the manga and anime were just tips of the iceberg. Due to pacing requirements, neither managed to touch the level of detail going on within the novels. I enjoyed it a lot more than I had expected to due to the gratuitous amount of character interaction and scenes which never appeared in the anime or manga. Recommended for Kageoru Project fans.Volume 1 mainly covers the story for these 3 songs from the Kagerou Project: Jinzou Enemy, Kisaragi Attention and Mekakushi Code/Chord. On a side note, small parts of Kagerou Daze (the story arc) are used as transitions between each of these chapters.

Awesome New Manga By James Agee I had no clue what this manga was about when I got it, the cover looked cool and the description was interesting, so I went with it. The art is brilliant and fresh and the story is fast paced and keeps your reading. I feel a little lost as to what the plot actually is in this manga series, but I will keep reading to find out because some really cool stuff happened in this volume. The characters are actually well written and likable. I recommend checking this series out and I hope Yen Press continues with it!

It was perfectly done despite the 3D animation in Ayano's Theory of Happiness episode at the beginning By Richard Carr For anyone who hasn't read or listened to the songs and is simply looking for something new to read. Then look no further. This manga has the right amount of mystery, humor and character for anyone interested in a unique story. If you're wanting more detail... I suggest picking up the novel instead. But if you're a fan or collector, I would certainly buy both. As I did myself. I hope the anime gets a blu-ray release here in the states as well. It was perfectly done despite the 3D animation in Ayano's Theory of Happiness episode at the beginning. Which is fixed in the jp blu-ray. But doesn't include subtitles.
