On one side you have men who have lost the ability to be good and are either dirty or cruel in response By Gecko While the main character’s issues are greater than most men of my generation, the problems he suffers from are real. The male characters in this novel are a true study of what has become of men today. On one side you have men who have lost the ability to be good and are either dirty or cruel in response. On the other side the main character has given up any edge and succumbed to the pressure to not offend anyone or break any rules. This book is not only entertaining, but thought provoking and could be used by sociologist to better grasp the current state of the American male. Even though the main character’s issues started early in life, many men should be able to relate to his current predicament of being trapped into a schedule and a set of rules that is self-imposed as much as dropped on him by society.I could say more, but I’m still digesting this novel and expect to be for some time.

The Stranger By CUBBIES2016 I met Mike (and his wife) a few years ago in the left field bleachers, during my annual father/daughter pilgrimage to Wrigley Field. We met a second time in those same bleachers a year later. On one of several beer runs, he mentioned that he was a "writer". The look on my face was I'm sure the same one he displayed when I said I was a high school Accounting teacher back in Tennessee. We must have been convincing enough to each other to keep in contact and I look forward to seeing my friend, "the writer" at Wrigley for years to come. I was drawn into the story of Dan Lemon on several fronts--I am about the age of Dan, I identified with his "hum-drum" daily routines, and recognized the existentialism of the plot that I hadn't read since Camus. I have, and will, encourage others to read this book as it is unique. There are some very deep passages that I found myself being very introspective, but also a nice balance of dick, fart and titty humor that pulled me back from the ledge! Great read, can't wait for more!

Gives your brain a good philosophical work out and many of us in middle age can identify with its protagonist, Dan Lemon - middle aged and going through the motions of life - until he is forced to confront what he believes, why he does what he does, and what makes life worth living. Everyone has a piece of Dan Lemon in him or her at some point in their lives, and if they say they don't they're lying. Great debut with quick, sharp dialog mixed with deep thinking and storytelling with a side of sweetness.

Where the Birds Fly Through, by Tim Brandy

About the Author Tim Brandy is a father, an educator, and a self-educated naturalist. As an educator, he taught writing and science for three decades. His curriculum was experience based. He taught students to pay attention outdoors and to ask questions about things they noticed. He directed them to write their observations and experiences in journals. His writing students wrote weekly of events in their lives. It was, Tim asserted, through consciously experiencing life, reflecting and capturing their stories, that they would know themselves and others. Tim was deeply affected by the death of a classmate in elementary school. Later when he was in high school, he experienced death of a peer and of his favorite teacher. These things informed his writing. As a father, he was always aware of the narrow barrier that kept his children safe and alive and felt grateful every day. Tim's best friend had a son die tragically at a young age. He witnessed the grief that never left and the slow, tentative return to life of this boy's parents. He experienced disease diagnosis with his own children. Where the Birds Fly Through is his response to these experiences. It is a love story between a parent and a child that continues to grow even after the child's death. Tim reaches deep into his experiences as a father-parental trials and fears, regrets, and complete joy. It is a work of fiction rooted in the reality of stories he has collected from his own life, the media, and friends.

Praise for Where the Birds Fly Through By Kate Where the Birds Fly Through introduced me to characters I grew to love for their attentiveness to nature, their secret thoughts, their quiet agonies and their loyalty to one another. This here is a rare kind of love story by a brave writer who delves into the terrifying love of a parent for their child. Anyone who has had a child will understand the deep vulnerability, fear, and self-doubt that plague a parent especially as their child navigates the dangerous waters of adolescence. I felt a great affinity for the characters of Miriam, Jeremy, and Lawson. The sadness in the story is balanced by beauty. A wonderful first effort by a new writer.

I fell in love with each of the characters, nature, and the variety of Bonsai trees. I enjoyed the journey of details through the characters present moment, while reflecting the larger journey of our lives. I love the feeling that the author creates allowing the reading to feel that all things are connected and so easily reflected in the life of a Bonsai. It was refreshing to read about tragic loss with such beauty and acceptance.

In a world that demands bigger, louder and more outrageous, it is a welcome return to the importance of the deep well that relationships of all kinds provide.

In addition, the story teaches children the days of the week. Hadas does such an amazing job with the artwork that even as an adult I am drawn right into the story. This is a book that children of all ages will love and Fufu will find a place in their hearts as it has mine. You don't want to miss this book. I need to see if there are more stories of Fufu because this dog makes me and the kids want to read even more!

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. This is a very cute picture book By Dorothy Red This is a very cute picture book and I love Fufu very much because he is s adorable. What makes this book more useful is that aside from telling a good story, it can also be a tool for bonding since it can be used as a game tool. Fufu likes to hide a lot. This is a fun way to teach children how pets can be so adorable and fun to be with.

Since we have a couple of dogs, he thinks ours need to help read this book, which is really cute to my wife and me. The illustrations aren't too cartoony, which is nice touch to the book. It is definitely worth an addition to your children's book collection.

The debut novel from the #1 Fantasy writer on Wattpad is finally here! "Imagine Game of Thrones with less blood and more gender confusion and you get a taste of this knightly epic." — The Guardian Brash, cocky, and unbeatable with a sword (well, almost), Sam of Haywood is the most promising Paladin trainee in the kingdom of Thule… and knows it. The only problem is that Sam is really Lady Samantha, daughter of the seventeenth Duke of Haywood, and if her father has his way, she’ll be marrying a Paladin, not becoming one. But Sam has never held much interest in playing damsel-in-distress, and so she rescues herself from a lifetime of boredom and matrimonial drudgery. Disguised as a boy, Sam leaves home behind to fight demons-—the most dangerous monsters in Thule—-alongside the kingdom’s elite warriors. Pity that Tristan Lyons, the Paladin assigned to train her, is none other than the hero of her childhood. He hasn’t recognized her–yet–but if he does, he’ll take away her sword and send her packing. Sam is not the only trainee hiding secrets: Braeden is a half-demon with a dark past that might be unforgivable. Whether he can be trusted is anyone’s guess, including his. As demons wreak havoc across the land, rebellion stirs in the West, led by a rival faction of warriors. A war between men is coming, and Sam must pick a side. Will saving the kingdom cost her life–or just her heart?

33 of 35 people found the following review helpful. An EXPLOSIVE read that took me by surprise and did NOT let up until the very end!!! By Alicia 4.5 STARSPALADIN was a dark and entangled world where demons roam killing anything in their paths, and lies and deception baths the streets of their world, and one girl is willing to fight for what she believes in, even if she has to become someone else in the process…THE PALADIN was such a great book that I thoroughly enjoyed! I was pleasantly surprised of how much I ended up liking this book. Because to be honest, I didn't have very high hopes for it after reading the synopsis. It sounded too common to be anything spectacular, but I was still intrigued enough to give it a try! And let me tell you, I am soooo happy I went out on a limb with this one, because it did NOT disappoint one bit!!I enjoyed the world-building a lot. We weren't just in one setting throughout this novel, we traveled all over their fictional county. All while engaging in epic sword fights, evading vicious enemies, slaughtering evil demons, and fulfilling their High Commanders dubious agenda. I liked that the plot kept moving and we didn't stay in one place for more then a day or so, and with each new atmosphere we had a new thrilling adventure that brought tons of fun!All three of the main characters were awesome. First up we have Sam, the quick tempered headstrong girl pretending to be a boy in order to follow her dreams of becoming a member of the Paladins, fighting to take down the wicked demons wreaking havoc all over their world. Sam has a feisty and determine personality, when she wants something bad enough she won't take no for an answer, and I admired that about her! She's strong mentally and physically, and a badass with a sword, and just as skilled in combat. I REALLY liked Sam from the very beginning, and by the end, I LOVED her!!Next we have Tristin, the desirable and unbeatable Top Paladin that is either hated or praised for his skill and contbution to the Paladins. I liked Tristin a lot too, he was a great addition to their little trio group, and was Sam and Braeden's strong mentor and leader. He was the glue that held them all together. I liked his dominance and sure demeanor he carried. He was definitely attractive and would make any girl squeal in giddiness if he was near. But for me he was just not the one for Sam, and in the end I hated his bitterness he carried for her, and the lack of respect for her feelings. But other then that, Tristin was a GREAT character that I look forward to seeing more of in book two!!Then we have my favorite male pratanitost, Braeden!! He raged a heart full of emotions within me! Braeden was half demon half human, but was always categorized and berated as a lowly demon, regardless of his noble acts. But in truth, even with his half demon blood, Braeden had a heart that would put most humans to shame! But he also had a dark side that would unintentionally crave horrible things, and would even ride the line of evil sometimes. But nevertheless, Braeden was a wonderful character with plenty of development and great personalization. And I LOVED the slow-burn relationship him and Sam developed throughout this book. It was sweet and perfect, and so utterly right in so many ways!THE PLOT:Samantha, Daughter of the Duke of Haywood is not ready to give into her fathers insane plans of marriage and popping out babies to a noble Lord. Instead, she wants her freedom to be who she really is, to wield her sword and fight like any good solider, but most importantly, to have the skill and knowhow to take down the same monsters that took her mother away, demons! And two years after her mothers brutal murder, she's ready to finally take the first step in claiming her life as hers, but first she has to become someone else…Sam has always favored swords over dresses, and thanks to her mother pressuring her father, she was taught at a young age to defend herself. And now that demons killed her mother she wants to join the Paladins, a organization that defends the citizens against demons. But theirs just one problem, you have to be a boy to join, something "Samantha" is not. Until she cuts off her hair, binds her chest, and straps on her sword on top of boys clothes, now she must convince the Paladins that she is not only a boy, but also worthy of joining their cause…Accepted into the Paladins and faced with more then she signed up for, Sam has to do her best to blend in and stay off anyone's radar. But when she's teamed with Tristin, her childhood savor, she realizes just how way in over her head she really is. But then another Paladin trainee is paired with her and Tristin, and she finds it hard keeping her heart from pounding and doing weird flips. But when you’re a girl pretending to be a boy, having uncertain feelings for a sunned half demon makes things a little complicated. But all that could be the least of their worries as a new group is rising the ranks and challenging everything the Paladins stand for, and forcing their honor and motive to be questioned. In order to find answers, Sam, Tristin, and Braeden are tasked with a mission all over the lands, seeking answers and restoring the Paladins name. But as Sam and her little trio start to unravel the deceiving web, they start to question everything they once knew about the Paladins, and their leader that rules them all…But with the demon count rising, and demons who have not been seen in thousands of years showing up and killing anyone they can get their hands on, and running into enemy groups as they travel, and Sam's undeniable attraction to Braeden, their all in for one hell of a ride. But first, Sam has to make them believe she's really a boy!!Overall, PALADIN was such a fun read that surprised me in so many ways. I loved just about everything about this book and am eagerly awaiting and anticipating the much needed sequel releasing in 2016.

Maas with a dash of Tamora Pierce.A tried and true theme with a difference. Young woman (of noble birth) wants to be a Paladin, lives for sword fighting, and definitely doesn't want to be married off to decorate someone's holdings and birth the required heirs.Disguising herself as a boy, Sam (Samatha) heads off to paladin headquarters to try her luck.(I've got to say that all that breast binding and then hiding how the the 'call of nature' impacts differently for women would wear me out, let alone holding my own in sword fighting against a hulking successful Paladin. How did she get away with it? Privacy would not be the first thing on the travelling Paladins' minds). She succeeds. An unforeseen circumstance--her co-trainee Braeden is a half demon. Her trainer, her hero from her past, Paladin Tristan Lyons, First of the Sword.Training, fighting demons, following the High Commander's bidding, and the continued battle to disguise her gender do take a toll, as does entering the enclave of a rival organization, The Uriel. It is feared that they seek to oust the Paladins. Sam and her team find more than they'd bargained for. Frighteningly more! The Paladin are in trouble!Well written, Sam's story exercises such a pull that you soon find yourself deep into the action and just snarl at having to face the day's busyness. A feisty young woman who won't settle for any less than she feels driven to do. Translate that drive to today's young women and here's a message for all to follow their dream. They can come true!A NetGalley ARC

Very Good Read By Lis It's actually more like a 3.5 star book, I've read this first on Wattpad, got my copy and finished it in less than eight hours.I can say that Sally Slater's published version is indeed better than the draft on Wattpad. The fighting scenes have improved greatly and now flow seamlessly, the interactions between Sam, Braeden and Tristan are still both hilarious, heartfelt and something I think you'd see in the real world between friends and respected co-workers. I really do think she fleshed Sam out more in this as well, we really get to see just why she wants to be a Paladin so much. She lost her mother to a demon attack and was powerless to help. I have to give points to Ms. Slater, Sam is probably one of the best female characters I've seen in ages. So many these days that are "strong" refuse anything feminine and look down on other women who love wearing pretty clothes and want to get married. I really loved and appreitacted that Sam wanted both to be a warrior and still be a woman. She didn't scorn others who just wanted to be the one who waited at home for their men. I really think that was a nice theme to have in this novel; that there are all kinds of strong women. It's not about kicking ass like the guys, it's about having the choice to if that's what you want. I love that Sam found a way both to be Lady Samantha, and Sam of Haywood-she realized she didn't have to give up either to get what she wanetd out of life.Breaden was a nice romantic lead, a bit angsty but it did make sense Sam's stregnth didn't take away from his and if he ever tried to tell Sam what she wanted she put him in his place quick. To use her own words "I know my own mind". He lived in a world where his heritage would be feared by most people. He grew up being an outcast. The powers given to him because of it was also something I liked, being able to sense the demons, healing so fast was incredible and so vivid in my mind while I was reading! I also liked how it came at a steep price, too much use and their gos his control. I liked about his powers-powerful yes, but it came at a price. I hope we will be seeing more of his backstory in the sequel!Trisitan was another character I liked quiet a bit, honorable, perhaps too much and got into some trouble as a result. His backstory broke my heart and it really explained his loyalty to the High Commander and the Paladins as a whole. I think he changed the most out of the whole gang to be honest. Rather than trust blindly that the Paladins where doing what was right he learned to question and act a little more independantly. I will be looking forward to see what he does in the sequel with the Uriel!I gave this book 3.5 stars because the characters were fun and interesting, it carried some wonderful themes, a compelling villain and this, my favorite line: "If this was a fairytale I'd be my own Gods-dammned knight!" However, I expected more from this novel, I wanted it more fleshed out how Paladin's select those they take on, Sam's relationship with her dad (we only were told of it, we never really got to see it), how Sam escaped from Haywood, more close calls with the two boys finding out she was a girl. (They traveled together for months, there should have been some close calls. Late night bathroom breaks, periods, something to plant the seeds in their minds.)Overall some things fell sort of my expectations, but on the whole I really really enjoyed this book and I will be putting out an order for the next book!
