With so many wonderful children's books on the market, works like this should never even see print - digital or otherwise. The story is boring and totally without any redeeming qualities - not even a picture to interest the kids or break the monotony of truly poor writing. Sorry to be harsh, but children deserve much better than this.

The author should be ashamed of her grammar mistakes and the vocabulary is far too advanced for a young reader. Very disappointed and would not consider another book from this author!!!

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Drivel. By Duncan Libby Absolutely the worst. Spelling and grammatical errors litter the unimaginative and inconsistent text, making it clear that this "book" hasn't been edited. Or even proofread.

By Heidi Grange I was a little bit startled when I discovered that this book has a few foldout pages, but after reading the book decided that it really works for this book. Daredevil Duck is an adorable character who doesn't really live up to his nickname leading other ducks to make fun of him. After a disaster occurs and Daredevil Duck panics, he is shocked to discover that Mole wants his help retrieving his balloon from a tree. Can Daredevil Duck overcome his numerous fears to help a new friend? I loved the theme here of overcoming one's fears, I liked the idea of doing in behalf of someone else even better. Sometimes that is exactly what we need to overcome our fears, a strong motivation. But like most people, Daredevil Duck has only just started down the path to conquering his fears, he still has a long way to go. This book would be perfect for sharing one on one and with some juggling with a group (foldouts can be a bit awkward with a group, although they enjoy seeing them).

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. Great book on Autism Spectrum Disorder By K. Bluttman This is a very helpful book on ASD. The Info is comprehensive and effective.First the book explains signs and traits of ASD, at different ages. This is quite helpful as your children can start to show symptoms at different ages.Next is a chapter exploring the causes of ASD, and explains how people on the spectrum function in the world. This chapter is great for those not familiar with autistic people as it can serve as a guide to understand those that are on the spectrum. The following chapters detail how to communicate with sensitivity which is so important to have meaningful interactions. A great pointer I read here is "Remember that you are talking to an adult...avoid using baby talk." The author clearly has the right tips to follow! As the father of an adult child on the spectrum I must say that a book like this would have helped much way back when we were trying to figure why our kid was different from his peers. this book will be very helpful to parents starting out on the journey.

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. Informative By Mary d. I have seen children around the society with autism and it didn’t appear to me that this kind of disorder is very serious. Reaching out with children that has ASD is very difficult; you need lots of persistence and a wide understanding. Then I realize, I need to read about this type of disorder for me to understand them and give insight to people who look at them differently.Good thing I found this book. The book gives explanation about the signs, causes and symptoms of autism. It explains several ways to communicate a child with autism for a successful interaction, not only for children but also for adult diagnosed with autism as well. I salute Alice Caldwell because she wrote this kind of book. I have read some books related to autism but this book is a great deal, more informative than the other. I recommend this book to all parents who have children, so they can detect the early stage of autism and to all couples who is planning to start a family.

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. Children with special needs By Trevor Knight Having a special child can be challenging most specially on communication. Most children have difficulty to relay their message to their parents when they need something. This book will help parents know more about the disease process and how they will be able to cope up and adapt to these challenges.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Story seems interesting, but it has some other issues By Michelle0072 The story concept grabs your attention, but the way the book is broken up with the cover image and text such as "Read on about the second book in the Nightfall Series. . . " between the prologue and chapter one is very confusing to say the least. I understand that the author gave the prologue to the female lead and the first chapter to the male, but the text and cover image in the middle really takes the reader out of the story and back to trying to figure out what the heck they are reading. Just when you are getting to know the characters their section ends. Another big issue I have is with references to other characters like the reader knows them already. An example: "Remember Damon? Yeah, I'm sure you all remember him." The book does not indicate that this is a story continuation. If there are previous books, I'd like to know. Anyway aside from this issues I think this could develop into a very good story but the author really needs to look at her book and make it reader friendly. I will check out the next book but if her layout continues to be the same I will not be purchasing anymore.

By Bob Walch This is a beautifully illustrated board book that encourages your child to flip the flaps and enjoy making animal sounds along with the featured critters. Look behind some rocks, a beach ball, a sand castle and some seaweed and you'll find a group of pretty cool beach animals and each one makes a special sound. Youngsters will love this interactive book that encourages them to make animal sounds, identify the animals and use hand-eye coordination to flip the flaps. This book is on its way to my granddaughter....Brynn will love it!

He just passed the "shove every book in your mouth" stage, but is too wiggly to just sit and look at plain board books. He loves this one so much I'm getting him one to own. I also plan on getting some of the others in this series by Sébastien Braun.

Chersheng's grandfather is beginning to forget things: little things like turning off the water faucet and big things like Chersheng's name. Sometimes he even forgets that he is in America now. Chersheng feels sad and helpless when he learns that Grandfather has Alzheimer's Disease, but then Chersheng's mother presents him with a story cloth stitched by Grandfather himself, embroidered in the Hmong tradition. Through the story cloth, Grandfather's memories of his life in Laos come alive. And inspired by Grandfather's tales about his life before the war forced him to immigrate to America, Chersheng comes up with a plan to capture his family's new life with his own art project. Grandfather's Story Cloth, by Linda Gerdner, Sarah Langford

From School Library Journal Grade 2–4—A Hmong boy learns about his grandfather's life in Laos and his escape to the United States as they share memories illustrated on the elderly man's story cloth. Grandfather has Alzheimer's disease and is beginning to forget common things. Chersheng's fear and exasperation are evident, as are the family's great respect and consideration for their aging relative. The English and Hmong texts face paintings that express the many moods of the characters. Endpapers and the back cover feature numerous geometric patterns that are common in Hmong handicrafts. A full spread shows the story cloth for easy reference and closer examination for details. Background information on Alzheimer's disease and the Hmong refugees and their story cloths will be appreciated by adults preparing to read the story or older children seeking information on both of these topics. A strong family story about difficult social issues relevant to today's society.—Erlene Bishop Killeen, Stroughton Area School District, WI Copyright © Reed Business Information, a division of Reed Elsevier Inc. From Booklist Chersheng, a third-grader, observes his grandfather’s growing confusion as his memory loss becomes more profound. Grandfather gathers sticks for a cooking fire, though Mother cooks on a gas stove. More disturbing, he calls Chersheng “Fong,” the name of his younger brother who died when their family fled from soldiers in Laos. Looking at a traditional Hmong story cloth that he made years before, Grandfather relates his family’s history to Chersheng, who makes a collage showing his grandfather’s life in America. Written in a straightforward manner, the text smoothly weaves Grandfather’s history into the contemporary tale, which shows how Alzheimer’s disease affects the whole family. Watercolor paintings sensitively depict this intergenerational story. The dual-language text appears side by side, English on a white background and Hmong on light blue, green, or tan. Reminiscent of Hmong geometric needlework, patterned squares decorate the end panels of this well-designed book. Notes on Alzheimer’s disease and on the Hmong and their story cloths are appended. Grades K-3. --Carolyn Phelan

Alzheimer's disease in an Asian immigrant family By Henry Berry A Hmong family who fled Laos after the Vietnam War in Southeast Asia and Alzheimer's disease which can afflict the elderly of any race are brought together. The young boy Chersheng is confused and saddened over his grandfather forgetting small things. In one incident, Chersheng's blanket becomes soaked when the bathroom sink overflows after the grandfather forgets to turn off the water. Another time, the grandfather forgets Chersheng's name.Chersheng sees the chance to reconnect with his grandfather again and involve him in the family when his mother gives him a story cloth the grandfather had made as a way to record the time before the family came to America. The Hmong people made such colorful woven story cloths to sell some of them to raise money to emigrate to America and get settled there.Chersheng gets the idea to make a story cloth of his own. When Chersheng shows it to his grandfather, the cloth awakens memories of his past. He recognizes photographs of family members, and he points out the family's present house and vegetable garden in Chersheng's story cloth. The grandfather does remember important parts of the family's past and present, and his memories have a part in the family's unity and future.

Grandfather's Story Cloth is a good quality tool for students and educators By Diana Rohini LaVigne As a dual-language book for children, Grandfather's Story Cloth conveys a touching chronicle about a grandfather loosing battle with the memory-crippling disease Alzheimer. And although many memories are fading swiftly, the grandfather's memories of his time in Laos and his Hmong culture are renewed and resurfacing. As his family brace to deal with the declining state of the elder member, authors Linda Gerdner and Sarah Langford deliver a narrative that helps readers better understand the disease and how to deal with its impact.Stuart Loughridge's illustrations assist in supporting the purpose of the book with bold, colorful yet simple imagery. Ending with an explanation of both Alzheimer's disease and the Hmong culture, this story provides an essential piece of literature that tackles a chief topic and exposes children to an underexposed Asian culture. Grandfather's Story Cloth is a good quality tool for students and educators to learn more about this rich civilization.

A profound story, warmly illustrated and highly recommended By Midwest Book Review Grandfather's Story Cloth is a bilingual English/Hmong picturebook about a young Hmong-American boy named Chersheng, whose grandfather has Alzheimer's disease; sometimes Chersheng's grandfather doesn't know where he is. But Chersheng's mother shows Chersheng a story cloth, stitched with care and embroidered in the Hmong tradition by his grandfather. Through the cloth, Chersheng learns of his grandfather's memories of life in Laos. Inspired by the cloth and his Grandfather's stories of how life was before war forced him to come to America, Chershing embarks on his own art project, as a means of expressing love stronger than a disease that attacks and destroys memory itself. A profound story, warmly illustrated and highly recommended especially for children's library collections.
