Acclaimed writer Margo Rabb’s Kissing in America is “a wonderful novel about friendship, love, travel, life, hope, poetry, intelligence, and the inner lives of girls,” raves internationally bestselling author Elizabeth Gilbert (Eat, Pray, Love).

In the two years since her father died, sixteen-year-old Eva has found comfort in reading romance novels—118 of them, to be exact—to dull the pain of her loss that’s still so present. Her romantic fantasies become a reality when she meets Will, who can relate to Eva’s grief. Unfortunately, after Eva falls head-over-heels for him, he picks up and moves to California with barely any warning. Not wanting to lose the only person who has been able to pull her out of sadness—and, perhaps, her first shot at real love—Eva and her best friend, Annie, concoct a plan to travel to the west coast. As they road trip across America, Eva and Annie confront the complex truth about love.

In this honest and emotional journey that National Book Award Finalist Sara Zarr calls “gorgeous, funny, and joyous,” readers will experience the highs of infatuation and the lows of heartache as Eva contends with love in all of its forms.

Kissing in America, by Margo Rabb

From School Library Journal Gr 9 Up—Two years ago, Eva Roth's father was killed in a plane crash, which is still being investigated. Eva's grief is as fresh as it was the day he died, but her mother seems determined to move on and expects Eva to do the same. As her mother becomes increasingly uncommunicative and obsessed with work, Eva tries to escape her pain by focusing on preparing for college; studying with her best friend, Annie; and losing herself in the pages of romance novels. When the teen is paired with high school heartthrob, Will, in an after-school tutoring session, she discovers that he, too, has lost a family member. Their shared understanding of loss and pain draws them into a relationship that is abruptly halted when Will has to move from New York to Los Angeles. Following the advice of her favorite romance novelist, Eva determines to find a way to go "get her man." She convinces the brilliant Annie to enter the two of them in an academic teen game show that promises a trip to Los Angeles and a $20,000 scholarship to the winner. Together they embark on a cross-country adventure that will test their friendship, and ultimately bring Eva to a deeper understanding of herself and her family. With a full cast of multidimensional characters, this novel explores the complex nature of relationships and the many faces of grief and love with equal parts humor and poignancy. VERDICT A first purchase for most YA collections.—Cary Frostick, formerly at Mary Riley Styles Public Library, Falls Church, VA

Review “Wonderful . . . Margo Rabb has created nothing less than a women’s map of American mythologies, navigating from Emily Dickinson to Barbara Cartland, from the cowboys of the rodeos to the makeup studios of Hollywood, and from the bottom of the Atlantic to the spacious skies of the USA.” (E. Lockhart, New York Times bestselling author of We Were Liars)“A wonderful novel about friendship, love, travel, life, hope, poetry, intelligence and the inner lives of girls. Margo Rabb writes with compassion and clarity about lives that are worth telling, journeys that need to be taken, peace that needs to be reached. I loved it.” (Elizabeth Gilbert, New York Times bestselling author of Eat, Pray Love)“That Margo Rabb can write a story so gorgeous, funny, and joyous that is also unsentimental and honest is a testament to her skill and to her heart. I loved everything about Eva and the supporting cast in this beautiful novel.” (Sara Zarr, author of The Lucy Variations)“It is a marvel and I love every word of it: the carefully structured plot, the memorable characters, the wholly apposite style and tone. It is funny, sad, wistful, wise, and altogether memorable.” (Michael Cart)“Rabb’s funny and big-hearted second novel is bursting with resonant themes of love, death, family, art and identity, fully embodied in a diverse cast of wonderfully fallible and entertaining characters.” (New York Times Book Review)“This feminist rom-com reminds us it’s never about the boy but the joyride.” (O Magazine)“Rabb eloquently gets grief right in this compassionate, perceptive, and poignant story, deftly leavened with irreverent humor, of a girl in conflict with her mother. Wise, inspiring, and ultimately uplifting—not to be missed.” (Kirkus Reviews (starred review))“A smart teen’s novel. [The] characters are authentic and complex. Rabb knows the perfect point to interject humor to diffuse a potentially devastating situation—a leavening of sorts to the reality that death and love inexplicitly alter the landscape of a person’s life.” (Booklist (starred review))“In this indelible coming-of-age story, Rabb seamlessly weaves together multiple narratives. Sprinkled with the poetry Eva reads and writes, this story makes for a hilarious, thought-provoking, wrenching, and joyful quest.” (Publishers Weekly (starred review))“[A] well-balanced read that exposes readers to weighty ideas and difficult feelings while keeping them entertained and emotionally invested.” (Bulletin of the Center for Children’s Books (starred review))“With a full cast of multidimensional characters, this novel explores the complex nature of relationships and the many faces of grief and love with equal parts humor and poignancy.” (School Library Journal)“Humor and depth . . . Often entertainingly snarky” (The Horn Book)“A young-adult novel that deftly weaves humor and snippets of poetry into its road-trip story. A beautifully crafted coming-of-age story that illuminates the layers of relationships.” (Austin Statesman)“It made me laugh until I choked, and it made me cry-it’s a book that made my heart feel full.” (Leila Roy, Kirkus Reviews Blog)“Tender, expansive . . . Eva is a likable, sympathetic character whose horizons expand literally —during a New York-to-L.A. bus trip with a friend—and metaphorically.” (Chicago Tribune)“Kissing in America” is a road-trip story with humor and heart. (Boston Globe)“Rabb’s coming-of-age story has a sweep as wide as the star-spangled sky. [Her] snapshots of America are witty and perceptive and appropriately poetic. There’s not just one love story in Kissing in America, there are many. (Austin Chronicle)

From the Back Cover

I loved romances because when you opened the first page, you knew the story would end well. Your heart wouldn't be broken. I loved that security, that guaranteed love.

In real life, you never knew the ending. I hated that.

As they road-trip across America, Eva and Annie encounter cowboys, kudzu, and tiny towns without stoplights. Along the way, they confront the complex truth about love.

It was a really quick read for me and I really enjoyed it – up until the end. Yes, the ending pissed me off in such a way that I wanted to hurl my Kindle across the room (but I realized I couldn’t live without the thing so I clearly thought better of that idea). It was kind of mindless entertainment…with a message, of course, but I was so blind sighted by the ending of this book that I couldn’t really be happy to have gotten such a message out of it. I’m not going to tell you exactly what happened that spoiled it for me, because that will ruin the book, but I never saw it coming. So our novel begins with Eva falling in love with a boy, Will, who comes to tutoring every Friday. She is helping him write his essay for college applications, and eventually, they fall in love with each other. At the wrong time of course, because Will is moving across the country, from New York to California, to live with his dad. Well, this is terrible news for Eva, but she is determined to find a way to go and visit Will. Then she stumbles across a game show for really smart girls, with the promise of a huge scholarship to a college that Eva’s best friend, Annie, would absolutely love to go to. So Annie auditions for the show, and she makes it. So begins the road trip to L.A., in which Eva will be able to see Will. Sounds like the perfect plan, right? Well, Eva’s mother is very cautious about letting her go pretty much anywhere, because Eva’s father died in a plane crash a few years ago (and this is a huge part of the story). Eventually, they get things all worked out so that the two of them will stay with family along the way (such as her Aunt Janet, who has an unnatural fear of germs and an obsession with the prevention of STD’s). When they get to L.A, things get a little messed up, and we learn that in the end, we have to learn how to be happy with ourselves, and accept who we are, and all that. But, no. Screw that. The ending sucked. It really did. I was expecting it to be this amazingly happy ending with hearts and flowers and rainbow-farting unicorns. And I got none of that, and I’m angry. Also, I felt like there was too much going on in this book at once. Too much background noise, and it got kind of frustrating to keep it all in order. I guess it was just me being bitter about the ending of this book, though.Like I said, it wasn’t a bad book. I enjoyed it up until the very end. I took off one star for the ending, and another because it just wasn’t all that memorable (and I only give 5 stars to books I absolutely loved).Note: I received a copy of this book from the publisher in exchange for an honest review.

Road trips, Romance, and Revolution By SESTORYWOMAN Eva is 16 and she is devouring romance novels as a panacea for her father's death in an airplane crash two years before. Eva's mother refuses to discuss her husband's death to the point that Eva cannot mourn his loss properly. She tells other people that her father died of a heart attack. Her mother and her Aunt Janet have become so overprotective of Eva that she has little personal freedom. She does have a wonderful friend, Annie Kim, to whom she can confide everything she thinks and feels. Enter Will, a gorgeous guy that Eva has long had a crush on. Eva volunteers as a tutor and Will shows up needing a tutor to help him re-write his boring college application essay. Will and Eva develop a strong friendship which evolves into a tentative romance shattered by Will's sudden move to California to live with his father. Eva, sure that Will is her true soulmate for life, schemes to find a way to take a trip to California. She finally discovers a reality TV show offering a $200,000 scholarship to the smartest student winner. She enters Annie and herself as a team and then convinces her mother to let her go on a cross-country bus trip since flying is clearly out of the question. The girls finally receive approval to go but Eva's tiresome Aunt Janet goes with them. When they reach California, Eva learns that life and relationships do not always have the endings one expects. And no, I haven't telegraphed the ending: it was a surprise to me. The writing in this book just sparkled. Eva's heartbreak over her father's death served as background music in her everyday life and her mother's inability to cope with her daughter's needs reminded me that everyone deals with enormous loss as best they can--sometimes with disastrous results. Annie Kim was almost unbelievably understanding at times but she too was a warm, sympathetic character. Will and Eva's budding friendship and romance was based initially on grieving but it becomes more than that for both of them. Margo Rabb's writing flows from one interesting situation to the next. I rooted for Eva and for her mother. And the characters: they were so real that I could see them clearly in my imagination. I had a couple of conversations with Eva in my car. This is easily a book that will consume perceptive teen and adult readers. And it should. It's one of the best books I've read in a long time.

A heart-breaking story By The Unofficial Addiction Book Fan Club We are The Unofficial Addiction Book Fan Club, to know more about this book, go to the post in our website.RATE: 3,5 starsREVIEW:Kissing in America is truly a heart-breaking story that will inspire you with every page and make you read a truly amazing teenage experience around America through Eva's point of view.Let's start this review saying that the previous title Margo's book had, Cures for Heartbreak, was more accurate than the actual one. Kissing in America is not your book if you're looking for a summer romance with butterflies and rainbows and a very happily ever after. Kissing in America is Evie's story about believing in love even after she has all the reasons to just give up, to trying to survive to the loss of her father and being the only romantic person left in her house. What I liked about the story was Annie. She's what I like to call a true teenager. She has problems, she falls in love, does impulsive things, talks and dreams about boys, has it's ups and downs with her mother... Like a said, a true teenager. Plus, she has a literary side that I truly loved. Her love for literature made me put post-its all over my ARC to remember where they were. The story starts a bit slow to my liking, but we had to understand Annie's surroundings, her situation and what Will meant to her. So I could pass it up. There are some way funny moments that made me laugh out loud, but the author had the ability to also combine heart-breaking and romantic moments.See an example:I wanted to text my mom: I would shoot myself, but instead I'll go poison myself because Janet would find that a nice sanitary way to die."Let's just say it doesn't look like the most comfortable thing on the planet. Their penises are four feet long.""I'm not planning on having sex with an elephant.""The story was a fantasy, but the feelings were real, I thought as we got back on the bus. That yearning, the sparks, the enormity of love - I felt those exact things with Will.""Grief isn't like a map you can follow. It's not a simple route with a destination. Sometimes you loop back and find yourself in the exact same place you left."Overall, Kissing in America was a good read and it was a different read from all the romance stories I had been reading. Kissing in America was more about healing and discovering that you can survive a break up. That you can learn from your experiences and mistakes and that everything can happen. It was truly an adventure.
