A Wilcox and Griswold Mystery: The Case of the Missing Carrot Cake, by Robin Newman

From School Library Journal Gr 1–3—When crime happens, especially when food goes missing on the farm, everyone knows who to call: Wilcox and Griswold, mouse crime fighters and food detectives. When Miss Rabbit's carrot cake goes missing, they're on the case. Using the latest technology (video surveillance) and old-fashioned police interrogations, they get to the bottom of the mystery. There are plenty of amusing characters and even more hilarious puns to be found along the way. With lovely, warm full-color illustrations on every page and case file/journal-style entries, this simple tale will be a hit for advanced beginning readers. It is a fantastic choice for that last step before chapter books (perhaps before another famous mouse detective/journalist known for his illustrated easy chapter books). Sweet and charming, this title offers a simple mystery that provides just the right amount of whodunit mixed with humor and good friendship. VERDICT Reminiscent of Marjorie Weinman Sharmat's "Nate the Great" series (Random), this well-illustrated work will find plenty of readers and should find a home in most school and public libraries.—Elizabeth Nicolai, Anchorage Public Library, AK

Review "Readers ready for chapter books will solve the crime and then be surprised by the twist at the end. Here's hoping for more hard-boiled detecting from Wilcox and Griswold!"  -- Kirkus Reviews, Starred ReviewSelected a 2015 Best Middle-Grade Book by Kirkus Reviews "Move over Spade, Friday, and Clouseau. There's a new badge in town. Meet Detective Wilcox, Missing Food Investigator. This inquisitive mouse will lead independent readers on a punny romp across the farm for his latest case to catch a cake thief. Kids are sure to be back for seconds."  -- Summer Dawn Laurie, Books Inc. "I love this simple Dragnet-style early reader. With lots of inside jokes and spot art to heighten the mood, readers get to solve a mystery along with Detective Wilcox and Captain Griswold. Six fun-filled chapters of humor, just waiting to be read. Bonus points if you can read it aloud in Sergeant Friday tone of voice!" -- Tracy Gallagher, Manager, Collection Development Youth Materials at Ingram Content Group"Perfect for junior detectives to sharpen their reading and reasoning skills. Plus, what kid doesn't like cake?"  -- Dianne Baasch, Librarian, International School of Yangoon, Myanmar

Just the facts, ma'am By Teresa Robeson One of my favorite children's book series when my boys were little was NATE THE GREAT, and this little gem of a book is just as fun and funny. I made my 17 year old younger son read it with me and we both got such a giggle from it. Robin Newman is to be commended on writing a book so good that a child 10 years older than the target age can still appreciate it. I look forward to the upcoming books in the series!

It is very charming and I love the characters and the surprises in the story. The word play works beautifully with the excellent illustrations. Adults as well as children have a great time with the humor in the story and the ending is extremely satisfying!

By Cathy Ballou Mealey Here is the first title in a fresh new series that really takes the cake!A perfect bridge from early readers to beginning chapter books, A Wilcox and Griswold Mystery: The Case of the Missing Carrot Cake is jam-packed with funny illustrations and clever word play. Two tough, fedora-sporting mice detectives are called in to investigate the shocking theft of Miss Rabbit’s tempting cream-cheese frosted dessert. After taking copious notes and photographing the crime scene, they skillfully interrogate three feathered, furred and curly-tailed suspects. A crummy and crumby trail of clues are lurking about, but the dedicated MFI’s (Missing Food Investigators) are keenly focused on cold, hard evidence. Will it take a lucky break to solve the theft? Or will high tech hi-jinks save the day?Sprinkled liberally with spot illustrations, the cartoon style illustrations are silly, engaging and integral to the story development. The text is ripe with food puns and rich vocabulary that add to the zany, tasty tale.Young readers will eagerly devour every delicious morsel – er, page- to get to the end of this mystery mouse-terpiece!

By Luquillo In the 1930's, Spider-Man Noir is being observed by one of his enemies Mysterio. He seeks to capture and kill Spider-Man for some personal reason. Little does Spider-Man know, Mysterio will be the least of his worries. At the same time, 4 different Spider-Men/Women will also learn they have more to worry about then their current problems. -summaryEdge of Spider-Verse isn't so much as a crossover with the main Spider-Verse storyline, as it's more of a prequel highlighting a few characters that made their way to the event. Written by David Hine and several others, Edge of Spider-Verse is a collection of stories following five people and it's surprisingly good despite the bite-size feel of things. This TPB collects Edge of Spider-Verse issues 1-5.The first four stories are very well written as each world delivers a very different feel, and there's quite a bit of diversity between the characters despite them all being Spider-Man related. Spider-Man Noir was a fun read with a nice twist to a very familiar feel. It makes me want to go back and re-read Spider-Man Noir since he does feel quite different from the real Peter Parker. Spider-Gwen whom has become the most popular character to spin out of the event has a nice enough world with loads of potential. Here she has become a fugitive and the law is completely against her. This is not new material at all since Peter has went through this so many times, but Gwen Stacy as Spider-Woman adds a very fresh feel to it, and her personality simply makes her someone to want to follow. Her world is shaping up to be quite good and that ending leaves one wanting more.Another story follows a futuristic Spider-Man using quite a bit of tech, but this story is probably more memorable for its outcome than its interesting atmosphere. It clearly makes one wonder what a world without a Spider-Man can quickly become. The fourth story which is my favorite has a totally different feel than the others, as it utilizes more of a horror atmosphere and it's quite dark heading towards the end. This one follows a sinister version of Peter and the less said about this awesome take on the character the better. The final story is the only one that didn't do a thing for me. It really didn't have enough to rope me into its world; there were no real twist that delivered enough fan service like the other stories, and it simply felt like it wanted to move from point A to B.I got into the artwork quite a bit. The character designs had their own identity through out with Spider-Noir looking the most mature of the bunch. Spider-Gwen had a more upbeat, manga style to reflect her spunky personality. I especially love Gwen's character design; for a Spider related character there's just nothing like it although there is some influence from the original Scarlet-Spider. Still, the cool factor is just so high with this character. The futuristic Spider-Man story has a standout moment that long time fans whom remember the Marvel collecting cards of the late 80's to 90's will find awesome. The little bit of action contained here is decent for what's it worth, with perhaps only one brutal moment. Action fans will get something out of here though.Overall, outside of one mediocre story and the fact these stories will leave folks wanting more; the only real crime committed is that Marvel didn't add this into the Spider-Verse event book. These stories would have fit in perfectly had Marvel formatted their book correctly and added them. In any case, these stories really don't add anything too important to the main event so I really wouldn't consider it a must buy; but if you're planning on working towards completion sake then definitely pick it up since it is worth a read.Pros: Nice batch of prequel stories with standout artworkCons: One mediocre story, and Marvel is just milking this event

Each story is unique, each with a different team working on it. With that being said, this format naturally encourages comparing the quality of each story to the other four in this collection. There are great stories here. There are also some that fall a little short. I am glad that they chose to keep the right characters for Spider-Verse.The first story marks the return of Spidey Noir. It's a great story, and I always love to see how they tweak classic characters to fit the style and time period. Sprinkle in some of my favorite Amazing Spider-Man characters/villains, and this story is a five-star easily. The second story, Spidey Gwen, is also a five-star piece. And a big enough hit to erupt out of this event and get a comic of its own! It's a brand-new view of Gwen, and I think it's fantastic that she's getting some time in the spotlight. Plus, her costume rocks! Love the hood and the color scheme isn't something you see everyday. All in all, the writing in this one and Noir are the most polished. From there, you have the Aikman story and the horror flick-esque "I Walked with a Spider." Aikman's story is a good one, but it wasn't a stand out to me. "I Walked with a Spider" accomplished what it was looking for, but it was almost over-the-top on the creepy side.Sp//dr, the last story, was the most unique, in my opinion. Ex-My Chemical Romance singer Gerard Way wrote this one, and his style is one of a kind. It doesn't quite reach the level of Noir or Gwen in my opinion, but the character and concept are entirely original, and I give Gerard a ton of credit for just throwing something new and different out there. All and all, book is good. Noir, Gwen, and Sp//dr are definitely worth the read, and it the price, it's definitely worth the money. However, it is a bit of a melting pot, and some stories are going to work better than others.

The two best ones are of course the characters that cross over to the main series. Along with a horror tale of what life would be like if the spider took over when Peter was bit. The other two stories are interesting but pretty average.A great buy overall though. I purchased this along with the large trade and included this in the reading order as listed there. It is almost a must since it makes the story even fuller.

Monkey and the Little One, by Claire Alexander

From School Library Journal PreS-Gr 1—Monkey lives a quiet life alone in the jungle, eating bananas on a tree limb, reading books, and swimming in the cool lake. An unexpected visitor, a mouse known as Little One, arrives and starts making himself at home. At first, Monkey is frustrated as Little One copies everything he does, interrupting his peace and quiet. Little One doesn't understand "monkey-speak" when he is politely asked to leave. After Monkey shouts, "Leave me alone!" a couple of times, Little One finally gets the idea and leaves. Monkey finds that being alone doesn't feel the same and soon sets off to find Little One and welcome him back. The soft and sunny, full-bleed watercolor illustrations are lovely, although not all scenes look like a jungle. VERDICT A sweet and simple introduction to the challenges and rewards of sharing company.—Sarah Polace, Cuyahoga Public Library System, OH

Review “Monkey lives in the jungle, where he enjoys eating bananas alone, reading books alone, and swimming in the lake alone. Clearly, he is content on his own, but one day, the Little One arrives and tries to befriend him. Though Monkey resists, the cheerful mouse persists, setting up his belongings beneath Monkey’s hammock, hanging out with him, and copying everything he does. Annoyed, Monkey finally yells at the Little One, who leaves. Out of sorts and missing his companion, Monkey searches for the amiable mouse in hopes of persuading him to return. Expressive pencil drawings define the lovable characters, while overlapping color washes create the settings, brighten the scenes, and heighten the emotional content of this satisfying story. . . . young children will enjoy the simple, direct storytelling and, of course, the happy ending.” —Booklist Online

I sat down to read it in bed, and I was done with the first half much faster than I anticipated. I won't spoil the ending, but I'm pretty sure The Little One gets eaten or gets hit by a car.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Very nice short story. I absolutely love it! By Mr. M Big fan of this little series here, it certainly keeps your attention, and very well-written. I like how it just connects you to the main characters thoughts and after you pick it up, I cannot put it down. The hardships just never seem to stop coming for this guy, so much conflicted emotions he feels and it certainly passes onto the reader. one cannot read this without seeing how much one can relate it is almost strange. Nicely done can't wait for the next one of these fascinating tales.

By Joel Eaton This is another tantalizing tale following our hero Piers as he considers what it means to go from being a nobody to being the people’s hero while also grieving the loss of a friend who may not be lost after all. This is another installment that is hard to put down. With every book in this series, I am ready to buy the next one before I even finish the one in my hands. If you have enjoyed the past books in this series, you have to get this one and find out what happens next!

Best Ebook PDF Online 39 Signs that the Narcissist or OCPD Person in Your Life May Also Have Bipolar Disorder: (...And How To Cope!) (Transcend Mediocrity Book 52), by J.B. Snow

It is likely that you downloaded this ebook because you know or are in a relationship with someone who shows signs of having narcissistic personality disorder or OCPD. But did you know that many of the symptoms of narcissistic personality disorder also cross over into the symptoms of bipolar disorder? One of the most important aspects of dealing with another person in a relationship, familial, school or work setting is in researching and finding out exactly what it is that you are dealing with. If you take advice regarding narcissism and apply it to someone with bipolar disorder, you could wrongly trigger bipolar mania or depression symptoms without even realizing it. Many people have reactions to a bipolar person’s emotional turmoil that only cause even further hurt between the two people. Mitigating the emotional damage that occurs in any relationship with a bipolar is crucial in having a successful relationship with that person. As you may know, bipolar is a serious mental disorder that exhibits itself as serious emotional ups and downs, or mood swings. Bipolar sufferers can have hallucinations and psychosis episodes, though not all bipolar persons experience these. Bipolar disorder was formerly known as manic depression. People who suffer from this disorder can have abnormally happy ups (‘highs’) and extreme depressive down days (‘lows’). They can also have mixed state episides, where they experience both depression and mania or hypomania at the same time. There are different types of bipolar disorder, such as bipolar I and bipolar II. Bipolar disorder can also be classified by terms such as rapid-cycling or seasonal. Seasonal bipolar disorder often makes someone act manic in the spring and then fall into a depression in the fall. Some people with Bipolar Disorder can also be classified as having Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD) due to the changes in the sunlight and seasons that interfere with their brain biology and circadian rhythms (sleep cycles). Many people struggle in dealing with a narcissist or an OCPD person without realizing that the person’s severe mood swings are also attributable to another disorder, like bipolar or borderline personality disorder. A person doesn’t have to be diagnosed as having a disorder in order for those in the relationships with them to try to accommodate their interactions accordingly. Many people do not seek treatment for bipolar disorder, and may not even know they have anything wrong with them. If you suspect that someone has undiagnosed bipolar, you can protect yourself against being a victim in the relationship or against triggering a bipolar person’s mood swings by taking a few additional steps in the relationship dynamic. Most bipolar disorder is caused by a combination of genetics and child-rearing (trauma that occurred in childhood). Trauma to the child that can cause bipolar disorder can include changes in the brain from being under chronic stress of emotional, physical or sexual abuse. Chronic stress and fear damages many areas of the brain during a child’s development. Head injuries and trauma at any time in a person’s life can also cause bipolar symptoms, or symptoms of another personality disorder. Injury can occur to the brain from other events as well. A person who lost oxygen for a period of time or who abused drugs may also have similar brain damage that can cause personality disorders or emotional issues. There are other disorders that can result from poor child-rearing, too: Narcissistic Personality Disorder, Psychopathy, Borderline Personality Disorder, Schizoid Personality Disorder, Obsessive-Compulsive Personality Disorder, Avoidant Personality Disorder, Anti-social Personality Disorder and many others. This ebook will cover the different signs that a person in your life who appears to be narcissistic or who may have obsessive compulsive tendencies may also have co-occurring bipolar disorder... Laura Martin is visiting Rome on a class trip, and she's entranced by the majestic Colosseum, the Trevi Fountain, the Pantheon . . . Everything in this city seems magical. That is, until the magic seems to turn very dark. Suddenly, statues of Cupid and ancient works of art come to life before her eyes. Earthquakes rumble and a cloud of ash forms in the sky. A dark-eyed boy with wings on his heels appears and gives her a message. Laura soon realizes she is at the center of a brewing battle -- a battle between the gods and goddesses, one that will shake modern-day Rome to its core. Only she and her group of friends can truly unravel the mystery behind what is happening. As tensions mount and secret identities are revealed, Laura must rely on her own inner strength to face up to what may be a fight for her life. Acclaimed author Paula Morris brings the ancient world to vivid life in this unstoppable tale of friendship, love, and the power of the past.

The Eternal City, by Paula Morris

From School Library Journal Gr 6 Up—On the last day of Laura Martin's class trip to Rome, all she wants to do is grab her BFF Morgan and soak up the sights in the city that's always enthralled her. Instead, when most of her group members, including Morgan, fall ill, she's stuck with some classmates she barely knows. As they walk around, strange things begin happening: Laura sees a Cupid statue shoot a pigeon, crows are always flying near her, and a sewer cover tries to eat her hand. Then the god Mercury appears, telling Laura that she wields two powerful stones called the Eyes of Minerva and that the gods are going to war over them. As Laura and her classmates traverse an increasingly dangerous city, they have to figure out what to do with the Eyes before Rome—and everyone who lives there—is destroyed. While fans of Rome and Roman mythology will find an enjoyable story, those looking for more may be disappointed. Some disruptions in an otherwise exciting plot stall momentum, though there are still plenty of periods of tension and intensity. Characters come off as two-dimensional and underdeveloped, and while some are intentionally enigmatic, most feel bland. Protagonist Laura ultimately has little agency and seems to rely on others to make decisions and plans for her. Still, readers interested in mythology and looking for action and romance without excessive violence and gore will find something to appreciate. VERDICT For libraries that can't keep myth-based adventures on the shelves.—Kelsey Johnson-Kaiser, La Crosse Public Library, WI

Relatable narrator with an interesting plot By Young Mensan BookParade The book jacket of Paula Morris’ The Eternal City adequately describes the entire novel with its first line: “Rome: city of sculptures, gelato, and handsome boys […] home to ancient ruins, where the gods and goddesses of old still linger” Morris does provide us with beautiful sculptures and architecture, and of course, there are several cute boys; however, the gods linger on the pages of the novel, and that is where they stay for the entire story. The Eternal City features Laura Martin as she visits Rome with her high school Classics class. After a few days of sight-seeing, many of her classmates and teachers come down with a mysterious illness, so Laura and four other teenagers are left to wander through Rome alone. The action of the novel begins when Laura and her friends try to survive multiple earthquakes and supernatural occurrences (including living statues and angry attacking birds) as they attempt to prevent a war between the Greek gods.In this novel, Morris has produced a relatable narrator and has written in many beautiful descriptions of Rome. She has set the stage for an interesting and engrossing plot; however, she never follows through. The promise of romance alluded to throughout the novel never grows into anything more than the hint of a love-triangle, and the epic war between gods only amounts to a few pages at the end of the book. Readers will never understand the gravity of the situation because they never interact with the elite gods themselves. In The Eternal City, Morris has created a story and characters that require an entire series to develop— not a mere 290 pages. It should also be noted that the Greek mythology genre is already dominated by Rick Riordan and his Percy Jackson series, so the bar is already set extremely high, and sadly, I believe that Morris has failed to meet it.But regardless of the faults of the novel, it contains little gems, too! Morris has truly captured the charm and essence of Rome in her detailed illustrations of ancient architecture, and she has also created an unlikely sisterhood between Laura and two of the other characters. Even though Laura, Maia, and Sofie seemly have nothing in common, they are able to bond throughout novel and create a life-long friendship. The Eternal City is the perfect read for middle-schoolers, but I suggest that Riordan-lovers give it a wide berth. Its light romance, lack of violence, and themes of sisterhood and girl-power will suit young girls (10-13) who are looking for a lengthy but engaging story. I gave the book 4 stars because despite my many critiques, I believe that young readers will enjoy it!reviewed by Lexi, K, age 16 ,Mensa of Eastern Carolina

By Dark Faerie Tales Review courtesy of Dark Faerie TalesQuick & Dirty: A trip to Rome goes wrong when everyone but a handful of schoolkids are left to survive a war with the gods!Opening Sentence: Laura Martin wasn’t even meant to be in Rome that June. The Review:This book is aimed at the younger adults and would be great for someone looking for an adventure story mixed with magic, myths and legends. The combination of mysterious characters in The Eternal City intertwined with the legends of the gods was intriguing. My favourite God was Mercury, probably because the others weren’t as prominent in the story and had less interaction with the humans than Mercury did. And part of my fascination with him was because I could sense an attraction between him and Laura so I expected something more to happen; unfortunately that wasn’t the case. The storyline was fairly predictable, which I would expect given the target audience, but there were parts that surprised me. For example, I expected one of the teachers to be secretly involved in the whole war of the gods thing (Percy Jackson springs to mind) but again that didn’t happen. The poor kids were literally stuck to fend for themselves in a foreign country, caught in a war between the Roman Gods! I guess if the teachers were involved and the teenagers had some sort of protection, then I would have compared it to Percy Jackson and assumed the author lacked originality.“Jack was right,” Dan muttered to Laura. “This is the worst school trip ever. If our parents knew we’d be fighting random seagulls and statues, they’d sue the Department of Education.”My main disappointment was the character of Megan. She had so much potential to begin with but it sort of disappeared when she became one of the students that fell ill. I can understand why the author chose to remove her from the main storyline; if Megan was still there no one would give Laura a second thought. It’s a sad reality but some people have stronger personalities than others. It was clear that Laura was Megan’s shadow, so to speak. The author tried to bring more spark to Laura but there’s only so much you can do to a natural vanilla!A plus point to this read is that there were a lot of action and drama filled scenes. I liked the contrast between fighting to survive in one scene and teenage issues like ego clashes, cliques and crushes in the next. The story is centred around an odd but interesting mix of school kids and it was pretty obvious that Dan would like Laura but I still found their mini romance sort of sweet. Especially when Dan becomes jealous of the attention Laura receives from other guys. A war might be going on but boys will be boys.Overall, a fun light read, great for the younger adult.Notable Scene:The trouble was, Laura thought, that dangers seemed to lurk everywhere. A dart wielding cherub on a tomb. The Mouth of Truth. The walls of a fresco. The woman at the Trevi Fountain, and the man here at the Fountain of Tortoises. Stone horses that moved, painted snakes that slithered, bronze tortoises that crawled and snapped and bared their teeth. Rome was alive with danger, seen and unseen, real and artificial. How could she believe anyone when they told her not to be afraid?FTC Advisory: Point/Scholastic provided me with a copy of The Eternal City. No goody bags, sponsorships, “material connections,” or bribes were exchanged for my review.

0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. Books of Love Book Review: The Eternal City by Paula Morris By Grace M. Fonseca A solid premise for a book. I totally loved the concept and idea for the book. Laura Martin was a character who I came to like. Her friends as well seemed a little bit more interesting. This was a book that definitely was interesting.Things I liked about it:1. The Main Characters GrowthLaura is a character that at first I didn’t connect with. It took me some time to get to know her and what her motivations were. After two chapters, I saw that this was a young woman who needs to be in Rome for a very specific reason. Plus we learn that she is going to play a big part in what is going on with the Gods. She has a gem stone that may cause her more harm and doesn’t realize. I also love how Laura starts to take control of more situations later on in the book.2. Greek GodsI love books where there are Greek Gods around. The Gods have reasons for doing things but they often use mortals. Mortals are sometimes their champions or representatives and send omens. Of course there is a fight brewing among the Gods. None of our characters really know this. Some of them are seeing things that the other ones can’t. I kind of like how Mercury only shows up to Laura. Some of the characters see things coming out of statues. So we never know what they are going to do.3. Mystery/No Adult SupervisionOf course this leads to things being asked about things that normally they wouldn’t be. Of course all the adults are sick during the school trip which leads our teenagers to have more freedom. I often like when characters have freedom to explore and learn things that they might not. I felt like also the characters can argue and express themselves a lot.Things I didn’t like1. No RomanceI was kind of disappointed that there was no romance. Sometimes the romance is what I’m expecting. Especially when a book is supposed to take place in Rome, which is said to be one of the most romantic places in the world. I guess you can’t have everything2. Dragging at times. Stupid fightsThe pacing could have been a little bit better in my opinion. There were of course going to be fights/arguments with the teenagers. At times I felt that some of the fights were stupid and served no purpose. They took the pacing down a notch or two. I don’t mind arguments/fights in books if they are interesting and enhance the story, but at times it felt weird.Overall a good book with some flaws in it. I think that their might be room for a sequel. Think that there’s potential for a sequel.Rating:Four Hearts

Bear and Duck, by Katy Hudson

From School Library Journal PreS-Gr 1—Bear is tired of being a bear. He doesn't like to sleep all winter, and his fur is too hot in the summer. And he is sick of all the angry bees when he tries to gather honey. As Bear sits grumbling under a tree about how much he doesn't want to be a bear anymore, he hears the sound of nearby ducks: "Quack!" Bear decides to join them and tries his hand at being a duck. Duck reluctantly agrees to help him. Lessons abound with nest building, swimming, and evening flying and although Bear is determined, he just can't succeed at his lofty goal. Humorous illustrations reinforce the plot and provide readers with a pleasing story of friendship and subtle lessons on embracing those qualities that make each individual unique. Standout illustrations rendered in ink and watercolor create an inviting mood. Spreads, cute vignettes, and painterly style drawings in warm hues create excellent focal points, making this a winning composition and fun-filled tale. VERDICT A sweet and engaging picture book debut.—Melissa Smith, Royal Oak Public Library, MI

Review Debut author/illustrator Hudson delights readers with expressive, endearing characters and sweetly ridiculous situations. A charming story of friendship and acceptance, distinguished by humorous and affectionate illustrations. (Kirkus Reviews (starred review))...the text has a cozy, Milne-infused flavor, with lots of lively dialogue. There are also dollops of humor. (Bulletin of the Center for Children’s Books)

Nice story about friendship and appreciating differences By BrittyMama This is a tale of "the grass is always greener" in that Bear gets fed up with being a bear and thinks it would be much better to be a duck. He is sick of hibernating and getting stung by those dang bees. He tries to fit in in a more aquatic environment- even taking lessons from his friend, Duck until it becomes quite clear that his efforts are in vain: he is a bear. Despite their differences, Bear and Duck realize that the important thing is their friendship and that each has his own unique challenges and advantages.Great story for appreciating one's strengths and weaknesses and for teaching kids that though everyone is different we all have unique talents to bring to the table.

He’s tired of his warm fur. He’s tired of the bees. So, he decides to be a duck. Being a duck looks much easier. All they do is waddle and quack. Duck decides to help Bear be a duck. But is there more to being a duck than Bear thinks? What I Thought- This was a funny book. I like how Bear is convinced that he can become a duck overnight. I also like that on his list of complaints is his fur. That made me smile. Duck is a great friend. Ms. Hudson really wrote a good story about two friends who are united by their differences.*NOTE* I got a free copy of this book in exchange for an honest review

The Good Manners of Cats is a beautifully illustrated rhyming story. This fun poetry book is a delight for young readers as they follow the cats to dinner and learn about good table manners in a fun and enchanting way. Into the dining hall, not to be late, they’re seated in time to eat dinner at eight. The silverware is set and napkins laid apart, and the table is where all good manners must start.

By Grady Harp Francis Keene is a rather new face on the children's books landscape and a very welcome one at that. Having just read SING WITH ME as an introduction - a book of poems with excellent illustrations, it is interesting to see that the magic in that book is carried through into this book, THE GOOD MANNERS OF CATS with superb illustrations by Abira Das! The book is written for the age group 2 - 10 years. The rhyming couplets are bound together in the story of a grand Victorian lady who lives in a castle with 400 rooms who prepares stew for a household of 900 cats and their kittens. `You might think serving 900 cats is a feat, but surprised you would be when they sit down to eat...The silverware is set and napkins laid apart, and the table is where all good manners must start..."Please pass me the pepper," said respectfully, 'twould seem. "Please pass me the saucer to drink all my cream."... And the Victorian woman sighs contentedly this eve, for once again all was order, as the cats took their leave.'The story is charming, full of imagination and subtle hints to children about table manners and courtesy. Beautifully illustrated this is another fine book by a rising children's book writer! Grady Harp, May 15

Staughton Having a new member of the family means that children's books suddenly come back on your radar, and I found my way to this one. It is a bit of a silly premise, but it's bright and dynamic and interesting to read. I can see why this would be good for years for a child, as the vivid illustrations would be great for a young child learning simple words or ideas about cats, clothing, food, houses, and other key images. Then, as they get older, making associations with words and pictures, and eventually the significance of sentences and even humor. I like children's books a lot, but don't spend much time perusing them, but now that I have a reason that isn't going away anytime soon, I think I'll be scoping out this genre a lot more. Can't wait to share it with my nephew and see if he agrees. Fun to read and even amusing to adults!

By Veritas Vincit I haven't had to buy children's book for quite a long time, but with the arrival of my first grandchild, I'm back in the market for fun, engaging books that actually have a purpose. I remember shopping for books decades ago, and so many were just colorful and distracting, and I feel like there is going to be enough of that once kids gets tablets in their hands in the next generation. This book is at least interesting in terms of language, underlying ideas, themes, solid illustrations, and a rather amusing through-line that even I found myself laughing at at times. I'm probably not the best judge of children's book quality, but when I see something I like, I feel like I should give it a spot of praise. I'm sure that my grandson is going to love it. Thanks for the new addition to the growing collection!
