Review PreS-Gr 3 In this well-composed picture book, Buddy Bear and his mother spend a summer day observing and sketching pond life. Buddy hopes to spot a turtle. He makes notes and draws many of the plants, bugs, and animals he sees while his mom reads factual information from a field guide. Specimens include ducks and geese, a whirligig beetle, a frog, cattails, duckweed, water lilies, dragonflies and damselflies, a salamander, and a pond skater. Buddy does see a turtle briefly and also spots one in the clouds and in a rock formation. Interspersed in the sequential text are Buddy s love of food and his sense of humor in the form of some nature jokes and puns. Wallace s familiar mixed-media collage illustrations (cut paper, photographs, and colored pencil) make this a visually appealing and informative look at limnology. Instructions are included for making a rock turtle. --School Library Journal, April, 2011Gr. PreK-3 Buddy and Mama Bear head for Pete s Pond, where they enjoy observing the animals and plants. Like any good naturalist, Buddy makes drawings in his notebook and labels them. Armed with a handy field guide, Mama answers Buddy s questions, offers facts about pond life, and exchanges riddles with her son. The colorful collage illustrations combine elements of cut paper, photos, and colored pencils. A simple craft project is appended. Written with an understanding of what will interest children this picture book from Buddy Bear series provides an accessible introduction to ponds and their inhabitants. --Booklist, March 15, 2011

A book that encourages nature exploration By Z Hayes My first grader was captivated by this book that follows a young bear and his mother as they go pond walking. Mama Bear and Buddy Bear go to Pete's Pond and find nature in abundance. There's duck and geese, whirligig beetles, frogs, cattails, duckweed, waterlilies, and many more. In simple language, readers get to discover what distinguishes a damselfy from a dragonfly, and much more.Along their walk, young Buddy tries his best to look out for his prize, the sighting of a turtle. Mother and child have time to not only enjoy nature in all its splendor, but also stop to have some rest and snacks. The collage illustrations add a lovely simplicity to the story that makes it all the more engaging, with actual cut-out photographs of ducks, damselflies, etc. This is a wonderful way to inspire a love of nature in young children.

By Bill Oterson "Pond Walk" written and illustrated by Nancy Elizabeth Wallace, is about a nature walk taken by Buddy and his mom. It centers on "Mama" identifying and explaining about selected flora and fauna found at Pete's Pond. Apropos as I often take granddaughter for walks through the yard and to a nearby pond where she is always excited learning about the flowers, fruits and occasional insects encountered. The book is of a nice size for children (about 9 1/2 x 9 1/2 inches), and I found it to be a good story with some humor with sufficiently heavyweight pages. It's colorful, too, and has a reinforced binding which is absolutely necessary as my soon to be five year old granddaughter has acquired the habit of tossing books into convenient empty, or not, spaces. And her younger brother, of course, follows suit. She is an avid reader and lucky to have many books to keep her interested and busy. We both were looking forward to reading "Pond Walk" and another book I ordered, and we read both during the same sitting.Mostly, I read the book explaining some difficult words and supplying answers to questions asked. And I thought the book might've been a bit difficult for my granddaughter. However, today, some days after our first reading, when I asked about how she liked the book she told me it was one of her favorites. Worthy then of five stars.

In this book they are going for a walk around a pond. Mama tells Buddy about the insects, plants, and other things that they see as they visit the pond as he sketches it all. Buddy has word play jokes that young children will enjoy. This a fun book for a classroom to use when learning about ponds, insects, turtles, or dragonflies. This is a fun book for parent child reading. I have enjoyed every Nancy Elizabeth Wallace nature book about Buddy and mama that I have, but even more important the kids I read them to really enjoy them. These are some of the best science books I have seen for young children.
