Where the Birds Fly Through, by Tim Brandy

About the Author Tim Brandy is a father, an educator, and a self-educated naturalist. As an educator, he taught writing and science for three decades. His curriculum was experience based. He taught students to pay attention outdoors and to ask questions about things they noticed. He directed them to write their observations and experiences in journals. His writing students wrote weekly of events in their lives. It was, Tim asserted, through consciously experiencing life, reflecting and capturing their stories, that they would know themselves and others. Tim was deeply affected by the death of a classmate in elementary school. Later when he was in high school, he experienced death of a peer and of his favorite teacher. These things informed his writing. As a father, he was always aware of the narrow barrier that kept his children safe and alive and felt grateful every day. Tim's best friend had a son die tragically at a young age. He witnessed the grief that never left and the slow, tentative return to life of this boy's parents. He experienced disease diagnosis with his own children. Where the Birds Fly Through is his response to these experiences. It is a love story between a parent and a child that continues to grow even after the child's death. Tim reaches deep into his experiences as a father-parental trials and fears, regrets, and complete joy. It is a work of fiction rooted in the reality of stories he has collected from his own life, the media, and friends.

Praise for Where the Birds Fly Through By Kate Where the Birds Fly Through introduced me to characters I grew to love for their attentiveness to nature, their secret thoughts, their quiet agonies and their loyalty to one another. This here is a rare kind of love story by a brave writer who delves into the terrifying love of a parent for their child. Anyone who has had a child will understand the deep vulnerability, fear, and self-doubt that plague a parent especially as their child navigates the dangerous waters of adolescence. I felt a great affinity for the characters of Miriam, Jeremy, and Lawson. The sadness in the story is balanced by beauty. A wonderful first effort by a new writer.

I fell in love with each of the characters, nature, and the variety of Bonsai trees. I enjoyed the journey of details through the characters present moment, while reflecting the larger journey of our lives. I love the feeling that the author creates allowing the reading to feel that all things are connected and so easily reflected in the life of a Bonsai. It was refreshing to read about tragic loss with such beauty and acceptance.

In a world that demands bigger, louder and more outrageous, it is a welcome return to the importance of the deep well that relationships of all kinds provide.

In addition, the story teaches children the days of the week. Hadas does such an amazing job with the artwork that even as an adult I am drawn right into the story. This is a book that children of all ages will love and Fufu will find a place in their hearts as it has mine. You don't want to miss this book. I need to see if there are more stories of Fufu because this dog makes me and the kids want to read even more!

What makes this book more useful is that aside from telling a good story, it can also be a tool for bonding since it can be used as a game tool. Fufu likes to hide a lot. This is a fun way to teach children how pets can be so adorable and fun to be with.

Since we have a couple of dogs, he thinks ours need to help read this book, which is really cute to my wife and me. The illustrations aren't too cartoony, which is nice touch to the book. It is definitely worth an addition to your children's book collection.

The debut novel from the #1 Fantasy writer on Wattpad is finally here! "Imagine Game of Thrones with less blood and more gender confusion and you get a taste of this knightly epic." — The Guardian Brash, cocky, and unbeatable with a sword (well, almost), Sam of Haywood is the most promising Paladin trainee in the kingdom of Thule… and knows it. The only problem is that Sam is really Lady Samantha, daughter of the seventeenth Duke of Haywood, and if her father has his way, she’ll be marrying a Paladin, not becoming one. But Sam has never held much interest in playing damsel-in-distress, and so she rescues herself from a lifetime of boredom and matrimonial drudgery. Disguised as a boy, Sam leaves home behind to fight demons-—the most dangerous monsters in Thule—-alongside the kingdom’s elite warriors. Pity that Tristan Lyons, the Paladin assigned to train her, is none other than the hero of her childhood. He hasn’t recognized her–yet–but if he does, he’ll take away her sword and send her packing. Sam is not the only trainee hiding secrets: Braeden is a half-demon with a dark past that might be unforgivable. Whether he can be trusted is anyone’s guess, including his. As demons wreak havoc across the land, rebellion stirs in the West, led by a rival faction of warriors. A war between men is coming, and Sam must pick a side. Will saving the kingdom cost her life–or just her heart?

33 of 35 people found the following review helpful. An EXPLOSIVE read that took me by surprise and did NOT let up until the very end!!! By Alicia 4.5 STARSPALADIN was a dark and entangled world where demons roam killing anything in their paths, and lies and deception baths the streets of their world, and one girl is willing to fight for what she believes in, even if she has to become someone else in the process…THE PALADIN was such a great book that I thoroughly enjoyed! I was pleasantly surprised of how much I ended up liking this book. Because to be honest, I didn't have very high hopes for it after reading the synopsis. It sounded too common to be anything spectacular, but I was still intrigued enough to give it a try! And let me tell you, I am soooo happy I went out on a limb with this one, because it did NOT disappoint one bit!!I enjoyed the world-building a lot. We weren't just in one setting throughout this novel, we traveled all over their fictional county. All while engaging in epic sword fights, evading vicious enemies, slaughtering evil demons, and fulfilling their High Commanders dubious agenda. I liked that the plot kept moving and we didn't stay in one place for more then a day or so, and with each new atmosphere we had a new thrilling adventure that brought tons of fun!All three of the main characters were awesome. First up we have Sam, the quick tempered headstrong girl pretending to be a boy in order to follow her dreams of becoming a member of the Paladins, fighting to take down the wicked demons wreaking havoc all over their world. Sam has a feisty and determine personality, when she wants something bad enough she won't take no for an answer, and I admired that about her! She's strong mentally and physically, and a badass with a sword, and just as skilled in combat. I REALLY liked Sam from the very beginning, and by the end, I LOVED her!!Next we have Tristin, the desirable and unbeatable Top Paladin that is either hated or praised for his skill and contbution to the Paladins. I liked Tristin a lot too, he was a great addition to their little trio group, and was Sam and Braeden's strong mentor and leader. He was the glue that held them all together. I liked his dominance and sure demeanor he carried. He was definitely attractive and would make any girl squeal in giddiness if he was near. But for me he was just not the one for Sam, and in the end I hated his bitterness he carried for her, and the lack of respect for her feelings. But other then that, Tristin was a GREAT character that I look forward to seeing more of in book two!!Then we have my favorite male pratanitost, Braeden!! He raged a heart full of emotions within me! Braeden was half demon half human, but was always categorized and berated as a lowly demon, regardless of his noble acts. But in truth, even with his half demon blood, Braeden had a heart that would put most humans to shame! But he also had a dark side that would unintentionally crave horrible things, and would even ride the line of evil sometimes. But nevertheless, Braeden was a wonderful character with plenty of development and great personalization. And I LOVED the slow-burn relationship him and Sam developed throughout this book. It was sweet and perfect, and so utterly right in so many ways!THE PLOT:Samantha, Daughter of the Duke of Haywood is not ready to give into her fathers insane plans of marriage and popping out babies to a noble Lord. Instead, she wants her freedom to be who she really is, to wield her sword and fight like any good solider, but most importantly, to have the skill and knowhow to take down the same monsters that took her mother away, demons! And two years after her mothers brutal murder, she's ready to finally take the first step in claiming her life as hers, but first she has to become someone else…Sam has always favored swords over dresses, and thanks to her mother pressuring her father, she was taught at a young age to defend herself. And now that demons killed her mother she wants to join the Paladins, a organization that defends the citizens against demons. But theirs just one problem, you have to be a boy to join, something "Samantha" is not. Until she cuts off her hair, binds her chest, and straps on her sword on top of boys clothes, now she must convince the Paladins that she is not only a boy, but also worthy of joining their cause…Accepted into the Paladins and faced with more then she signed up for, Sam has to do her best to blend in and stay off anyone's radar. But when she's teamed with Tristin, her childhood savor, she realizes just how way in over her head she really is. But then another Paladin trainee is paired with her and Tristin, and she finds it hard keeping her heart from pounding and doing weird flips. But when you’re a girl pretending to be a boy, having uncertain feelings for a sunned half demon makes things a little complicated. But all that could be the least of their worries as a new group is rising the ranks and challenging everything the Paladins stand for, and forcing their honor and motive to be questioned. In order to find answers, Sam, Tristin, and Braeden are tasked with a mission all over the lands, seeking answers and restoring the Paladins name. But as Sam and her little trio start to unravel the deceiving web, they start to question everything they once knew about the Paladins, and their leader that rules them all…But with the demon count rising, and demons who have not been seen in thousands of years showing up and killing anyone they can get their hands on, and running into enemy groups as they travel, and Sam's undeniable attraction to Braeden, their all in for one hell of a ride. But first, Sam has to make them believe she's really a boy!!Overall, PALADIN was such a fun read that surprised me in so many ways. I loved just about everything about this book and am eagerly awaiting and anticipating the much needed sequel releasing in 2016.

Maas with a dash of Tamora Pierce.A tried and true theme with a difference. Young woman (of noble birth) wants to be a Paladin, lives for sword fighting, and definitely doesn't want to be married off to decorate someone's holdings and birth the required heirs.Disguising herself as a boy, Sam (Samatha) heads off to paladin headquarters to try her luck.(I've got to say that all that breast binding and then hiding how the the 'call of nature' impacts differently for women would wear me out, let alone holding my own in sword fighting against a hulking successful Paladin. How did she get away with it? Privacy would not be the first thing on the travelling Paladins' minds). She succeeds. An unforeseen circumstance--her co-trainee Braeden is a half demon. Her trainer, her hero from her past, Paladin Tristan Lyons, First of the Sword.Training, fighting demons, following the High Commander's bidding, and the continued battle to disguise her gender do take a toll, as does entering the enclave of a rival organization, The Uriel. Very Good Read By Lis It's actually more like a 3.5 star book, I've read this first on Wattpad, got my copy and finished it in less than eight hours.I can say that Sally Slater's published version is indeed better than the draft on Wattpad. The fighting scenes have improved greatly and now flow seamlessly, the interactions between Sam, Braeden and Tristan are still both hilarious, heartfelt and something I think you'd see in the real world between friends and respected co-workers. I really do think she fleshed Sam out more in this as well, we really get to see just why she wants to be a Paladin so much. She lost her mother to a demon attack and was powerless to help. I have to give points to Ms. Slater, Sam is probably one of the best female characters I've seen in ages. So many these days that are "strong" refuse anything feminine and look down on other women who love wearing pretty clothes and want to get married. I really loved and appreitacted that Sam wanted both to be a warrior and still be a woman. She didn't scorn others who just wanted to be the one who waited at home for their men. I really think that was a nice theme to have in this novel; that there are all kinds of strong women. It's not about kicking ass like the guys, it's about having the choice to if that's what you want. I love that Sam found a way both to be Lady Samantha, and Sam of Haywood-she realized she didn't have to give up either to get what she wanetd out of life.Breaden was a nice romantic lead, a bit angsty but it did make sense Sam's stregnth didn't take away from his and if he ever tried to tell Sam what she wanted she put him in his place quick. To use her own words "I know my own mind". He lived in a world where his heritage would be feared by most people. He grew up being an outcast. The powers given to him because of it was also something I liked, being able to sense the demons, healing so fast was incredible and so vivid in my mind while I was reading! I also liked how it came at a steep price, too much use and their gos his control. I liked about his powers-powerful yes, but it came at a price. I hope we will be seeing more of his backstory in the sequel!Trisitan was another character I liked quiet a bit, honorable, perhaps too much and got into some trouble as a result. His backstory broke my heart and it really explained his loyalty to the High Commander and the Paladins as a whole. I think he changed the most out of the whole gang to be honest. Rather than trust blindly that the Paladins where doing what was right he learned to question and act a little more independantly. I will be looking forward to see what he does in the sequel with the Uriel!I gave this book 3.5 stars because the characters were fun and interesting, it carried some wonderful themes, a compelling villain and this, my favorite line: "If this was a fairytale I'd be my own Gods-dammned knight!" However, I expected more from this novel, I wanted it more fleshed out how Paladin's select those they take on, Sam's relationship with her dad (we only were told of it, we never really got to see it), how Sam escaped from Haywood, more close calls with the two boys finding out she was a girl. (They traveled together for months, there should have been some close calls. Late night bathroom breaks, periods, something to plant the seeds in their minds.)Overall some things fell sort of my expectations, but on the whole I really really enjoyed this book and I will be putting out an order for the next book!

I wrote this book for you. This book is about making a difference in your life. I don’t intend to inspire you because inspiration just makes people feel good and tingly inside for a short period of time. I don’t intend to inform you because information isn’t really what makes the difference—you already know a lot about what theoretically creates happiness. I do intend to incite action. Action is what creates movement and results, which creates a shift. Being inspired and learning more doesn’t make a real difference without action. If you’ve picked up this book, you’re open to creating more happiness in life and love. So let’s get going and get into action! ~Kara Deringer

The Invisible Man is a science fiction novella by H. G. Wells published in 1897. Originally serialized in Pearson's Weekly in 1897, it was published as a novel the same year. The Invisible Man of the title is Griffin, a scientist who has devoted himself to research into optics and invents a way to change a body's refractive index to that of air so that it absorbs and reflects no light and thus becomes invisible. He successfully carries out this procedure on himself, but fails in his attempt to reverse the procedure.

The Invisible Man, by H.G. Wells

About the Author Often called the father of science fiction, British author Herbert George (H. G.) Wells literary works are notable for being some of the first titles of the science fiction genre, and include such famed titles as The Time Machine, The War of the Worlds, The Island of Doctor Moreau, and The Invisible Man. Despite being fixedly associated with science fiction, Wells wrote extensively in other genres and on many subjects, including history, society and politics, and was heavily influenced by Darwinism. His first book, Anticipations of the Reaction of Mechanical and Scientific Progress Upon Human Life and Thought, offered predictions about what technology and society would look like in the year 2000, many of which have proven accurate. Wells went on to pen over fifty novels, numerous non-fiction books, and dozens of short stories. His legacy has had an overwhelming influence on science fiction, popular culture, and even on technological and scientific innovation. Wells died in 1946 at the age of 79.

Wells certainly wasn't the first author to write stories involving something or someone who is invisible but his novel was definitely the first big hit of the invisible man genre. It is also easily the best known and widely circulated of the invisibility stories written before the 20th century. In fact with maybe the exception of H.F. Saint's Memoirs of an Invisible Man (1987) (which was later turned into a Chevy Chase movie which although enjoyable, was nowhere near the masterpiece that book was), Wells' 1897 classic is still probably the most well known of the genre today. This book also has had a number of movies made based on its story and as well has had a few sequel books written by other authors in the modern era such as Legacy of the Invisible Man by Dave Ulanski and The Invisible Dirty Old Man by Richard S McEnroe, both based on relatives of or people who found possessions of characters from Wells' story. This was one of H.G. Wells first stories, it was actually originally a short story as were most other invisible man stories pre dating it which Wells later came back and expanded to the length it is now. Being one of his first stories the quality of the storyline isn't always sensational and is in fact rather slow moving in parts for the reader. A large number of words Wells picked to use, unfortunately for him have also dropped out of the English language meaning you've either got to look them up or just take a wild guess as to what he is referring to. The best parts of the story were when Griffin was recounting how he became invisible and the events straight after in London to his friend Kemp. The novel really would have benefited from more of this type of storyline. Saying that though if you're a fan of the invisible man genre you definitely need to check this out. Better stories have been written in the modern era that go more into depth with the problems an invisible man faces and have a lot faster paced storylines such as H.F. Saint's Memoirs of an Invisible Man as well as Donald E Westlake's novel Smoke. The version of this book I have also has a lengthy intro by someone called Christopher Priest who is obviously a hard core fan of Wells. While it is great for fans of this genre to learn about other stories about invisible people (although it is certainly no comprehensive list there's many titles missing) unfortunately though Priest's bias shows as he makes some ludicrous claims about other stories being based on Wells' story which if he actually read these books, aside from having an invisible character have nothing more to do with this storyline at all then the this book does when compared to the invisibility stories that Wells must have read before writing this.Anyway if you have no idea what this novel's about the basic storyline is a man named Griffin wrapped in bandages who never takes of his coat or gloves checks into a small town hotel. Obviously trying to keep his secret Griffin is quite short with the busybody landlady and others who just walk into his room uninvited and keep pestering him about things that are non of their business. Small town bigotry and gossip has locals assuming he is either a member of an undesirable to them race, criminal or something worse, so when there is a burglary in town he is the main suspect. Not being treated the way he should be he decides he'll become even more abusive back to them so it is not long before a physical fight breaks out, the police get involved and he is forced to shed his clothing, expose his secret and escape. Not having the most pleasant of personality certainly doesn't help stop those he has enlisted to assist him from betraying him and stealing his possessions. Griffin decides that if he is going to be labelled and treated as a ruthless monster he will go one better and become an even worse and feared villain then their lies ever wrote in the papers.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. You can't see me By bernie I grew up on all the invisible man movies and still think of him as Claude Rains. I was surprised in the similarities and differences the book has to the movie. The scenes are rearranged from the book to make visual (or invisible) sense as a movie script.A man all warped up in bandages except for his large pink nose requires a room at the inn and pays well. Slowly the Innkeeper and her companions suspect there is more to his than just a man with bandages. Everyone in a while they glimpse light where there should not be. And the stranger is so cranky that the money may not be worth the trouble of keeping him. Soon there are strange happenings and the cat is out of the bag sort of speaking. The trail leads to murderer and a possible reign of terror. Read more to find out where the secret is reviled and how a man named Griffin got in this situation. If I had read this story a year ago I would have said it was a fairly well put together sci-fi story. I would just enjoy the writing and wonder how H.G. came up with the idea. However now after reading much of H.G.'s political writings I see that this is a thinly veiled social commentary. We find that unlike the movie where Griffin goes mad in the invisibility process, that in the book Griffin was always amoral and anything stressful could set him off. Also, somewhere out there is a couple of floating eyes that belong to a cat.Now one habit that H .G. has in most of his tales is that just when you think he is finished on the subject, he will go off in another direction with some sub plot he has slipped in earlier. Therefore, what should have been a short story becomes a novel. Another good example of his witting style can be found in "The Food of the Gods."

Lewis"The true test of a man's character is what he does when no one is watching." John WoodenThe sentiment of the above quotes has been spoken and written plenty of times. J.C. Watts, Tony Dungy, and others have said similar things. Scripture reflects the same principal. The book of Proverbs reminds us that "Whoever conceals their sins does not prosper." The prophet Isaiah writes, "Woe to those who . . . do their work in darkness and think, 'Who sees us? Who will know?'"I thought of this when I was reading H.G. Wells's classic The Invisible Man. Griffin was a brilliant young scientist who became fascinated with altering the refractive properties of matter. Viola, he stumbles upon invisibility, only he has not been able to figure out how to reverse it. He is cursed to exist unseen by anyone. He almost immediately begins a spree of trouble making, crime, and mayhem.I don't know what I would do were I in Griffin's place. I would like to think I would handle it better than he did. I would also like to think I'd have the foresight to make some clothes invisible so I wouldn't have to go around naked if I wanted to be unseen and warm. But I have to be honest and admit I'd probably be like the kid in that 1980s movie The Invisible Kid and go in the girls' locker room. At least when I was a kid. Now that I am mature, I'm sure I would only use my invisibility power to do good.Wells's prose is strong, especially keeping in mind that he reflects his time and place (late 19th century England). The story is sparse, but fresh, in spite of the dated prose. Like any good science fiction, or really any fiction, it raises questions larger than the story itself. The Invisible Man remains a book that deserves revisiting.

Although it is common to perhaps grow weary of an author's form and style after so many books focusing on similar subjects. NOT SO HERE. Excellent every one, enthralling in story, style, content, and flow. What a productive mind which never seems to run the least bit weary in its brightness! Such superb reading in filling continuity, thanks indeed!

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. and have loved the complexities of her character as she evolves By Amazon Customer I have been reading of Naero Maeriss exploits from the beginning, and have loved the complexities of her character as she evolves. A lot of the stories ave been with many plot twists, and turns. The main gripe, such as it is, is the editing programs used.A little more attention to detail in the editing, and these exciting yarns will be all the better....

The way it was written, and the previous books, keep the readers interest and attention. The trials that various characters go thru and there interaction with the story keeps your attention. By Grady Harp Francis Keene has written a rhyming children's picture book - illustrations by Miks Valdbergs - that not only `sings', but also provides some of the finest combinations of rhymes and joy with superb illustrations on the shelves today. The characters are a boy and girl and they find all manner of places to sing and rhyme and discover - from a space ship by the moon, a swing in the court of lion kings, to the highest tree, to a boat in a castle's moat, to plucking petals from daisies with raccoons, to playing with a bunny and carrots in the summer sun, to a rainy day with frogs, to a sandy beach, to flying on the backs of dragonflies, t a starry night, and finally to be - and the end of their flight. Not only are the rhymes inclusive of repeated words - sing sing, night night, fly fly, etc - but they introduce the reader to the happy things in nature both in words and pictures. How better to send a child off to dreamland than with a song in the heart about happy singing things? This is a superb bedtime children's book. Highly Recommended. Grady Harp, May 15

A Nice Symbiosis Between Rhyme, Rhythm and Pictures By Marta Cheng Targeting children two to six years of age, Sing With Me is a beautifully illustrated rhyming book that takes a boy and a girl on exciting playtime activities dressed up as “adventures” before bedtime. These include singing on swings, climbing trees, boating around a castle moat, playing in the summer sun, playing in the rain, playing in the sand and water while some of the more adventurous activities include flying in the sky and taking a rocket around the moon. The rhyming prose is simplistic enough to engage even the youngest child and the repitition is presumably designed to encourage children to repeat what is read to them as they follow along with the colorful illustrations. Author Keene and illustrator, Valdbergs, create a nice symbiosis between rhyme, rhythm and pictures that will capture the imagination of every child. Sure to become a well-loved favorite among the pre-school set.

It's only short so would be a great read for bedtime or story time in a preschool class. It is about the adventures of two children told in a way that could quite easily be sung to any tune. It is really aimed at a younger age such as preschoolers, beginner readers 2-6 yrs. It's more like poetry but written in a way that makes it seem unlike poetry. The illustrations are created by Miks Valdbergs. They are truly beautifully drawn and the use of bright colours would help keep a child's attention. I also feel that the parent or guardian reading to the child could use the pictures to interact by asking them to point out what you ask them to find. The use of repetition is a good way of encouraging the child to read and learn new words.I thoroughly recommend this book.

Ian Quicksilver: The Warrior's Return, by Alyson Peterson

From School Library Journal Gr 8 Up—"You burdened me with an impossible quest. You took from me my sword, my horse and my strength, and then you sent me here to suffer a weak human life." Sixteen years after Ian was flushed down a massive obsidian cosmic toilet and sent to Earth as a three-month-old infant, the skinny, nerdy kid discovers who he really is thanks to his coach: a warrior from the planet Bankhir. He's told that he has only a few weeks to find the princess of a neighboring planet, fall in love, and save his planet from a fearsome wizard who intends to rule both their home worlds. Fortunately, the princess in question has just arrived at his school. Unfortunately, she has no idea who she truly is and is burdened with her own problems. But magical powers, a legendary sword, and a mischievous horse, to say nothing of the coach, help pave the way to true love…or something resembling it. This absurdly funny, action-packed novel will have teens (and probably their parents) reading long into the night. VERDICT The only bad thing about this first book in a promising new series is the moment when the last page is turned, and readers realize they'll have to wait for the next installment.—Jane Henriksen Baird, Anchorage Public Library, AK

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. the funny banter, the ultimate loyalty -- was highly enjoyable By Aleisha Beckstrand Dudes! This book was a hoot for a number of reasons: 1.) Ian is a very likable and charming character. Peterson writes the voice and the personality of a snarky-yet-witty teenage boy very well. 2.) The relationship between Corbin and Ian -- the jibs and jabs, the snide comments, the funny banter, the ultimate loyalty -- was highly enjoyable. 3.) The author is a local chick, someone I grew up with, and a friend, so that's pretty rad!Overall, well done, Alyson Peterson! Well done on your debut novel and on the start of something smashing! Already looking forward to the other books in the series.

He lives in a foster home and doesn't have any friends. Then, Coach Corbin becomes his new gym teacher and starts whipping him into shape. He has no idea why he's being singled out until Coach Corbin tells him who he really is and the quest he must complete to save his people--who live on another planet! Unfortunately, it requires the new, beautiful girl Arianna to fall in love with him and he doesn't have much time. There's also someone in a powerful position who is determined to see Ian fail, so, yeah, the deck is definitely stacked against him.I breezed right through this book because it was so much fun to read! Ian is likable and funny and I laughed a lot at his relationship with Coach Corbin. The time to fulfill his quest kept getting shorter, too, so it seemed absolutely impossible. He's able to befriend Arianna fairly easily but she is determined to keep him in the friend zone. She has a secret that keeps her from getting close to many people but it's not an issue for Ian.I loved Ian's voice and thought the author did a great job of writing as a teenage boy. It felt authentic and there were times that I forgot that she's female. There were plenty of twists and turns and I wasn't sure exactly how it would end. The ending is satisfying but there's definitely more story to be told. This is a fantastic first book and I'm excited to share it with my children! And, of course, I'm looking forward to reading more in the future!I received a copy of this book to review. My opinion is 100% my own.

Two little boys are living with their grandfather. They are neglected. They are abused. Their mother and father? Incarcerated. The boys are adopted into a loving family. Everyone lives happily ever after... Not quite. Not yet, anyway. The boys' traumatic memories and attachment problems were not left behind when they began life with their forever family. These problems, hidden at first, became overwhelming very quickly. Emotional turmoil spread to the adoptive mother too. Parenting these extremely troubled children would prove to be a nearly impossible task. The healing begins, but not before difficulties arise and mistakes are made. Join the boys' mother as she recounts the pain, confusion and constant struggle for hope during their first two years together. This book tells the story of the discovery of attachment and trauma problems from an adoptive mother's perspective. As the story unfolds, a greater understanding of Reactive Attachment Disorder and Post Traumatic Stress Disorder develops, but not as a result of textbook definitions or clinical terminology. The author details her experiences from legal battles, to the realization that her children were suffering from RAD and PTSD, to the challenges of daily life. The emotional toll is evident as she discloses her feelings of inadequacy and admits her regrettable actions. Her unrelenting determination, however, conveys a message of strength and hope.

Waiting for the Fruit to Ripen: One Adoptive Family's Experience With Beginning to Heal the Invisible Wounds of RAD and PTSD, by Mary Ray

About the Author Mary Ray is a dedicated mother, and is passionate about teaching young children. She is raising her two sons in the same small Midwest town she grew up in, and continues to teach. She holds a B.S. in Family Studies and Human Services (Early Childhood Education degree), as well as a M.Ed. in Early Childhood Education and Administration, although she maintains that no amount of education could have prepared her for parenting children with RAD and PTSD. She likes to spend time with family, teaching her sons new things (when they let her), traveling, and would enjoy reading, photography, astronomy, baking, and being crafty if she had more time. If she’s not at work, she might be found cheering on the local high school football team, watching college basketball or baseball, or outside with her sons.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Oh my goodness, at last a book that gets my children as well as my husband and me. We have three adopted children. Our oldest ad By Mimi Moeller Oh my goodness, at last a book that gets my children as well as my husband and me. We have three adopted children. Our oldest adopted child is a young lady now, almost twenty two years old. She is remarkable, and has healed so much with the help of our son in law. Our youngest two children are a bit older than Jackson and James. Still, after all this time we still can relate to the emotions, the roller coaster ride that comes with adopting children with RAD and or PTSD. Our beloved therapist for the past four years has retired and has a small practice about two and a half hours away from us. Our new therapist tries, yet isn't yet on the same page as the rest of us. She feels that my children are lovely children and really hasn't experienced our children act like themselves. They haven't broken her in yet. I read this book in just over twenty-four hours. I had to sleep sometime. Truth be told, this book was so spot on that I relived many of my unspoken moments with our journey on our rollercoaster of life. Thank You for your family and your heartbreaking and soul lifting story. Like you our children show more happiness, more truth that they too are healing. We still have the issue's that make one feel as if someone has pushed the rewind button in life. NO!!! Not again, for there are no fast forward buttons in life. Still we will take the here, the now. We dream of tomorrow, pray for today, and learn from our yesterday's. We still all mess up, we are human. As a Mommy, I have learned that I have caused some of our children's triggers, never meaning to....we wait out the hurt, the pain, the screaming, the hurtful words, and offer comfort, yet have stopped taking ownership of what we cannot control. Often people see our beautiful children and see what they want to see, normal children. Other's in our lives see two naughty, manipulating children, BRATS. We are truly unique in our family. I am suggesting every social worker, teacher, adoptive and foster parent read this book. Five star's without a doubt. Thank You Ms. Mary Ray for this true to life book of your journey. I look forward to reading how your son's Jackson and James are in the future. Best of luck to you and yours. You truly are a Mama. Congratulations on your family and this amazing, open and powerful book.Mimi Moeller
