From School Library Journal PreS-Gr 1—Shaw's eighth installment in her beloved "Sheep" series (Houghton Harcourt) is as lifting and soothing as the first. Rhyming text softly rocks readers alongside a patient border collie who puts five sheep to sleep by fulfilling their bedtime wishes. These requests range from a hug, a drink, a cozy quilt, and a teddy bear. The story is illustrated with Apple's signature colored-pencil drawings; they are sweet and soft, just right for bedtime. VERDICT This book will be a favorite for any reluctant sleepyheads.—Melisa Bailey, Harford County Library System, MD

Shaw and nicely illustrated by Margot Apple, is a new eighth installment in Sheep series these two authors created, that so far brought the numerous adventures of these charming animals. After driving in a jeep, sailing on a ship, been to shop and taking a hike, to name a few, Shaw and Apple are going to tell a story about the sheep that can’t settle down when time for bed will come.Winking fireflies light the way, as sheep stroll home to hit the hay. Five sheep settle in their shed, using straw to make the bed. But though the time has come for day full of play end, the young sheep can’t stay calm and fall asleep.Who or what can help them – their friend sheepdog, a hug or blanket? Or maybe they are thirsty? But as every parent knows how to lull child that does not want to end a day full of play, for these cute sheep eventually the dreams will also come…Nancy Shaw wrote again an interesting story that for its subject has unwillingness to go to sleep – the situation in which all the parents at least a few times had found themselves. Similarly to the sheep, children can come up with zillion reasons and things that need to be done before they close their eyes and fall asleep.Because of aforementioned, this kind of book would be an ideal reading for your children as a bedtime story, to calm them with a story about the little sheep that also do not want to stop playing, although the darkness fell.Given that there is not too much text inside this children book, though written in a beautiful rhyming manner, ‘Sheep Go to Sleep’ will be appealing title for kids between 3 and 5 years, while Apple’s artwork with beautiful illustrations made with colored pencils are made in warm and calming manner that fits perfectly with the story written by author, making this book enjoyable for the youngest that cannot hold their attention for too long. Therefore, I can recommend ‘Sheep Go to Sleep’ as a great bedtime story, good continuation of Sheep series for loyal fans and because of the nice lesson, charming illustrations and universal theme the children all around the world will certainly be able to enjoy it.

Young children enjoy the humor in these stories. As a pediatric speech-language pathologist, I use every one of the books in this series with my clients who are working on the /sh/ sound. There are many opportunities to practice saying the sound correctly at the word and/or sentence level and my clients love to retell the stories to their parents. You can't do any better than that.

Problem is there is too much noise for snoozing. Owls and crickets make it hard to get any rest. Fortunately, the perfect nanny, in the form of a collie, comes a-calling. Sheep #1 gets a snug hug and soon starts snoring. Sheep #2 wants a drink so water is fetched. Two down, three to go. A lullaby creates the right atmosphere for the next sheep to fall into La-La Land. What's better than a stuffed friend to help you feel sleepy? Sheep #4 is provided with a teddy bear and then there was one. The last sheep receives a cozy quilt and soon all is well. The sound I hear right now is ka-ching because toddler parents will want to buy this book for nighttime reading. It's way past 10 on the cute meter, there's great rhyming action, adorable illustrations abound, and it's not that long which is great if you need to hurry to catch the second half of the game after having nighttime duties. This is definitely in the buy two category because the first one will be worn out quickly. It's also available in a board book which makes for great gnawing.
