Another excellent Minecraft story By TFLReader My son and I have been tearing through these Minecraft books by Herobrine Books and really enjoyed the one on the history of Minecraft that we recently read. Of course, one of our favorite characters is Steve so are always excited to find a story that has him as a central character. This latest book centers on Steve in the Overworld and how he is first challenged by the destructive forces in the Minecraft world. There is some great action in this story and some really wonderful illustrations from the game included as well. Love these stories.

Daddy Sat on a Duck (The Daddy Series), by Scott M. Cohn

From School Library Journal PreS-Gr 1—A young girl looks for wild animals as she investigates the roars, quacks, squeaks, and other strange noises that she hears in her house. "Daddy sat on a duck at dinner one night. 'Excuse me!' he said, which I thought was polite. I know that if somebody sat on MY back, I'd be angry enough to let out a big QUACK!" The girl soon discovers that her father can sometimes be noisy, messy, hairy, and stinky. But she also enjoys the games, snuggles, and kisses from him. A note to readers suggests, "Try making the noises. You won't be disappointed." The digitally created images are a bit raunchy at times and in one picture the father is shown with a can of beer. There is a lack of consistency in the portrayal of the child's age. VERDICT This book may be enjoyed by those who find humor in bodily functions, though other may find it offensive or inappropriate.—Sarah Polace, Cuyahoga Public Library System, OH

Review Praise for Daddy Sat on a Duck: "The digital illustrations reinforce the girl's misconceptions to comedic effect and emphasize the genuine affection between father and child. Clearly, he is perfect in her eyes, despite his penchant for walking around the house in his underpants and questionable singing ability. This is an amusing debut, with another story about this oh-so-natural daddy due later in the year."―Booklist"I can pretty much guarantee a few giggles will occur when reading this book, and that's probably because more than a few readers will relate. Recommended for families whose dads like to live a bit on the 'wild' side."―Bookingmama.net

As a teacher, I found this book to have many virtues including creativity, rhyming, and familiar family circumstances. I am sure everyone can relate to the story in some way. It is a fun book and the illustrations are adorable. I would recommend it for ages 3 and up. My 4 year-old and 7 year-old grandchildren really enjoyed listening to it last night!

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. Dr Seuss for the Modern Age By Nathaniel When I saw the cover of Daddy Sat on a Duck I knew my rascal nephews (4 & 6) would love the book. It's very reminiscent of Dr Seuss with it's narrative of rhyming schemes and prosaic flow. It doesn't have that patronizing "I'm writing for kids" feel that so many children's books have. This is a mature silly book. The illustrations are tight, it has a graphic novel look that really impressed me.I scored a ton of cool uncle points when I brought the book over. My nephews absolutely loved it. My sis-in-law said it's such a hit that they're going to buy a second book to keep in the car for long rides. Kids today have high expectations and keeping their interest is no easy task, so that's high praise.Definitely going to buy the second book in the series when it comes out.

Excerpt from EugenicsBut it does not. Nor does eugenics propose to do violence in any other way to any humanitarian or Christian effort. Eugenics does not mean, as some have imagined, compulsory or government-made marriages. Some people have thought that eugenics was some half-baked scheme to breed the human race as we breed domestic animals, and to make a race of pug-noses or blond hair or blue eyes or any other fancy that some master of ceremonies should conceive. Nor does it mean a reduction in the proportion of love marriages. On the contrary, it means an increase of such marriages. Just as soon as men and women come to see and admire, as in ancient Greece, the ideal of physical perfection they will fall in love on that basis, as nature always intended that they should. There will be less interference with love marriages through ambition to acquire property or title.Eugenics is simply an application of modern science to improve the human race. "But," says the skeptic, "that will take millions of years!" Nevertheless, I reassert that it is easily practical to alter and improve the human race and to do so in a very short time. This Is The New Optimism Of Eugenics and it is based on solid evidence. Until recently no one realized how fast the race could improve if it would. Even Galton himself, when he first proposed eugenics, was under the impression that we inherit from our ancestors in a way which would make possible improvement extremely slow. He put forward as a theory (what we now know to be incorrect) that each child gets half of its nature from its parents, one quarter from its grandparents, one-eighth from its great grandparents, one-sixteenth from its great great grandparents, and so on indefinitely back, the sum total of those fractions being, when added up to infinity, just unity or the whole inheritance.About the PublisherForgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Two good supplements are 'For The Public Good' by Belle Boggs and 'The Social Direction of Evolution: An Outline of the Science of Eugenics' by William Kellicott. No study of Eugenics is complete without research of key individuals involved including: Francis Galton, Herbert Spencer, Karl Pearson, Harry H. Laughlin, Charles B. Davenport, as well as such institutions as The American Eugenics Society, the American Breeders Association, the Pan-American International Exposition. A good secondary resource is Stefan Kuhl's 'The Nazi Connection: Eugenics, American Racism & German National Socialism).

5 of 9 people found the following review helpful. A short and bad book By Dalton C. Rocha I read online, this very short and bad book. This very short book was writen by American economist and eugenist Irving Fisher (1867 - 1947). In fact, to be very short, with just about 26 pages of text, is the only quality of this book. Repeated eugenics arguments and believes. Just a few things with use are in this book. And in fact, God's hand cursed the Irving Fisher. His young daughter, Miss Margaret Fisher, became mad with schizophrenia in 1918. Looking for a cure, Irving Fisher went to Dr. Henry Andrews Cotton (1876-1933). This famous doctor was a quack. Irving Fisher, the author of this book had his daughter transferred to Dr. Henry Cotton. This quack attributed her condition to a "marked retention of fecal matter in the cecal colon with marked enlargement of the colon in this area" for which she was subjected to a series of useless colonic surgeries before dying of a infection, got from these useless surgeries, in 1919.Years later God's hand went against the Dr Henry Andrews Cotton. His hundreds of victims, included even his own sons, Henry Jr. '30 and Adolph '31, stripped of their teeth as a "prophylactic measure" prior to their matriculation at Princeton University. Both killed themselves, some years later.Being so short and being writen by Irving Fisher (1867 - 1947), I must give two stars for it. If this book would be bigger, I would give one star for it. I'll repeat: shortness is the only quality of this bad book.

Beach House, by Deanna Caswell

From School Library Journal PreS-Gr 2—Short rhyming lines tell a tale of an idyllic family summer getaway. Mom, dad, three kids, and their dog arrive in an overloaded car at their beach cottage. Hurriedly unpacking, they rush to the ocean where they enjoy a day full of swimming, playing in the sand, and flying kites. After a hotdog cookout in the evening, they head home to a sweetly restful night—"Tan limbs tangle./Snuggled tight./Rosy noses,/kissed goodnight," and a promise of continued fun—"Tomorrow's/just/a sleep/away." Bates's soft watercolor washes exude brightness and warmth of a summer day, enlivening Caswell's terse couplets with vivacious family scenes. VERDICT Breezy and fun, this story will make the beach-loving readers long for an outing of their own.—Yelena Alekseyeva-Popova, formerly at Chappaqua Library, NY

Great cover art sucked us in for a view. It had some great art, it took you through what you might experience throughout the whole trip. Reminded me of sitting on Madison Avenue, where the executives sat within their four walls, dreaming "what is the next idea that the world will love"? And my recognition that they were so far removed from middle America. Palm trees sway, Tomorrow’s just a sleep away. It rhymes, but it doesn’t work for my normal American beach loving family.

The warm feeling the watercolors generate is perfect for this book. I really enjoyed this book, and the rhyme in it had a soft, there-but-not-there feel. This was a great book I would recommend to any family going on vacation to read (whether on vacation or not) or if you just want to dream about warm summer days. :)*NOTE* I got a free copy of this book in exchange for an honest review

It removes everything around. I mean total devastation. You have to make sure you are covered, or in right standing with God.It is also a powerful tool in self deliverance, matter fact I just read one of the prayer for healing . I really wasn't sure it would work. After a few minutes I felt a burning in my stomach. As if something coming up. I rush to the bathroom .Istarted vomitting .I felt such relief that i do not always have to rely on a deliverance minister to deliver me.

11 of 12 people found the following review helpful. RIP Herb Trimpe By Stephen Vincent Kempton I was very hesitant to review this volume. I reviewed volume 8 of Hulk's Masterworks just six months ago and was confused. While at the time of this writing it has generated fourteen "helpful " it also generated three "unhelpful " votes. The most of any review I have done. I am still puzzled by this .My belief is that people find the art of Herb Trimpe to be a totally polarizing experience. Either they love him or they hate him. The knock on Herb seems to be his art is not realistic. Well the same could be said for Jack Kirby and Steve Ditko.Well Herb just died a month ago and I am feeling very nostalgic . He was the artist on the Hulk for my entire youth. Herb was a kind and humble soul. The one time I got to meet him he made light of his artistic ability and his role in the history of comics.Well if you hate Herb Trimpe's art run away now , this is not the book for you. But if you love Trimpe keep reading.......This volume collects fourteen issues of the Hulk all penciled by Herb Trimpe. Hulk #157 to #170 . With cover dates from 1972 and 1973.With a couple exceptions the writing is by Steve Englehart. Englehart's concept for jade jaws is quite different then his take for The Avengers which he was writing simultaneously . Instead of intricate long oversized arcs. Here Englehart seems to pattern his stories after the Godzilla movies. Every issue the Hulk fights a different Monster . Most stories are done in one's with continued back stories. The Hulk fights a lot of established foes such as The Abomination, The Rhino, Tiger Shark, The Mimic and Modok. Plus Steve creates five new foes who would become reoccurring villains in the Marvel Universe. Wendigo, The Gremlin, Zzzax, The Bi-Beast and The Harpy. Plus both Hank McCoy , The Beast and Clint Barton , Hawkeye co-star in an episode.Sal Trapani inked the first ten stories and he was a great team with Trimpe. The pair some times just used their initials "TNT" on covers and such meaning Trimpe and Trapani. Jack Abel inked the final four. While he wasn't a bad choice, I prefered the more detailed work of Trapani. In Hulk #157 Archie Goodwin makes his final appearance as writer setting up the Betty Ross , Glen Talbot wedding. The Hulk battles The Rhino. In Hulk #158 Roy Thomas and Steve Gerber continue the story when The Hulk and The Rhino take a spaceship to Counter Earth and meet another version of Bruce Banner. Warlock even makes a cameo. For a transition issue the storyline continuity is seamless. In Hulk #159 Steve Englehart begins his run. The Hulk returns to Earth just in time to battle the Abomination. In Hulk #160 Major Talbot and his bride Betty leave for a Honeymoon at Niagara Falls. The Hulk follows even though he was not invited. He encounters Tiger Shark for a battle. In Hulk #162 the Talbots continue to flee into Canada , while the Hulk continues to pursue them. The Hulk meets The Beast and the Mimic in a plot that ties up loose ends from Englehart's Amazing Adventures run. My one complaint here is Herb Trimpe's depiction of The Beast is not very good. In the recent Avengers Masterwork Englehart explains how he got Jim Starlin to do the first Beast appearance in Avengers until George Tuska got the hang off it. Well they could have used that here.In Hulk #162 we get the introduction of the Wendigo. Then in Hulk #163 green skin flees from Canada to the USSR for the introduction the Gremlin. In an interesting side note from Englehart's introduction we learn that two villains named The Gremlin were both created in the same month, the other in Steve. Gerber's Defenders , but it is Englehart's version which would become iconic. In Hulk #164 and #165 Englehart creates a fascinating civilization that lives at the bottom of the ocean floor. The ending to this saga was shocking and powerful. Finally in Hulk #166 Hulk returns to the USA. In this issue we get the creation of the electricity monster Zzzax who reminds me of one of those great monsters Marvel used to do in the pre-superhero era. Hawkeye guest stars and actually defeats Zzzax but in a strange twist of fate Hulk gets the credit. In Hulk #167 Modok returns with giant robotic body. We also see the return of the Hulk's youthful sidekick Jim Wilson. In Hulk #168 Modok who is still around subjects Betty to a massive amount of radiation so that she becomes the monster named the Harpy. The story continues into Hulk #169 and things get even stranger . The Hulk and the Harpy wind up on the floating world of the bird people , former residence of the Red Raven.. The explanation for Bi-Beast's reason for being there is not fully explained to my satisfaction. But he is a weird two headed foe. Some how on this bird world they have a machine which allows you to drain Gamma radiation out of monsters so that Betty can return to normal. This whole storyline is bizarre and reads like a drug induced fever dream. In final story from Hulk #170 the Hulk and Betty fall off the avian world . Betty magically regains clothes in mid-air and they land on an island chock full of monsters. While the main story lacks much in the way of explanations the scenes of Betty and the Hulk surviving on the Island are touching. Englehart only plotted this story with Chris Claremont scripting.Englehart provides a great introduction but the extras are rather slim this volume being only three pages of original art.The art restoration is excellent once again and we get the same beautiful printing job we have come to expect. So if you like the work of Herb Trimpe this book will provide you with hours of nostalgic fun. Highly Recommended.

Holistic Parenting By Amazon Customer Parenting is so much more than just learning how to change a diaper or feeding the right food at the right stage. Dr. Thompson takes a refreshingly holistic view to parenting - it's about the whole family unit - the baby, the caregivers (parents, sitters, etc), the home environment. She uses true stories from her personal experience to help us figure out how to do this whole parenting thing, and actually enjoy it (late nights and all!). I am always surprised at how the seemingly small changes that she suggests make such a profound difference in my life as a parent. This book is my go to present for all friends when they make the leap into parenthood.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. I enjoy reading about the Civil War By Nicola Mansfield A reprint of a book with a limited run originally published in 2009. This graphic novel is a series of short stories that combine to tell the story of the Civil War mostly through the viewpoint of a father and son serving under Stonewall Jackson. It's an incredibly readable history volume with real facts except for the fictional father & son. Different presentations are used throughout from single pages of text to maps to frames of comics with only narrative to full comic style with speech bubbles. Interspersed between the story of the adventures of Ty and his father as they join the Confederate Army and go off to war are shorter stories of famous people (ie Custer), other events (ie an ironclad) and letters home from various soldiers in the field. This is a harsh look at war, death, disease, depression, desertion. While there are a few episodes from the "Federalist" side, the book decidedly shows the war from the "successionist" point of view and makes a point of making slavery *not* the point of the war for the average volunteer farmer or mountain boy who signed up. Also of interest are one-page history lessons on such topics as certain guns in use, the birth of the sniper, certain famous people, battles, and campaigns. I enjoy reading about the Civil War, especially of the South, and fully enjoyed this. It's not in-depth but gives a good overview for a student or is simply entertaining and informative for any age.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. History brought to life in a well done way By Wayne A McCoy 'Civil War Adventures, Book One' is a series of illustrated retellings of stories from the Civil War. I enjoyed it quite a bit.The stories are told in no particular order. The book provides a timeline of the war and shows when the stories take place there. There are stories of snipers and farmboys and fathers who find themselves in the path of war. There are letters to loved ones. We meet Mosby who made a famous raid behind enemy lines. We meet deserters who only want to get home to sick family and failing crops. We meet Darnel Dingus who seems to have managed to make it into a famous painting for his lack of brains. Many of the stories are prefaced with brief information. It seems like the stories are more from the Confederacy side of things, but I think a lot of the experiences were not uncommon. It feels a bit like these were cut out of a larger work and pasted back in a different order. It gives some of the stories a strange or abrupt ending, but it didn't detract from my enjoyment. I loved the art. It's very detailed and at times has a bit of caricature feel, but it brings everything to life very well.I received a review copy of this graphic novel from Dover Publications and NetGalley in exchange for an honest review. Thank you for allowing me to review this graphic novel.

Recommend as a supplement to any history classroom or personal library By April Damon “Civil War Adventure”, by Chuck Dixon and Gary Kwapisz, is a graphic novel about the Civil War that does exactly what you want this type of book to do--bring history alive for the reader. Through the use of both short and long stories, the novel personalizes the war by focusing on the plight of the everyday soldier and their families. There are also some interesting looks at battlefield tactics on land and on the water that will introduce many readers to Civil War lore that they may never have learned in school before now. I found myself drawn in with the first story, “A Choice of Targets”, which immediately humanized the conflict and never let me forget that every tale of glory was another man’s death and every death was a choice between two men. I also want to point out that the illustrations by Gary Kwapisz are gritty but poignant. The entire novel is in black and white but that only highlights the grey areas of the conflicts, the causes, and the results of the war.*Recommend, as a teacher, for supplemental use in the classroom: grades 6 and up*Some spelling errors present in the e-copy outside of history usage*Received an e-copy of the book from the publisher and NetGalley in exchange for an honest review

Enjoy what you are doing. Everyone is good at something else. If we do what we like the best, we will succeed. We really do not have to be good at everything. We can not be good at everything. That what I say to my kids. Enjoy life. I read this great book with my kid, and I recommend all parents to read the book with their children.

Winn Great book, the witch queen rules the village and Sigal did an amazing job with her description of a ruler who is really ugly and the illustrator showed readers the perfect illustration to prove it. The monsters work for the queen and readers meet Tony who doesn't know what to do with his life. This is an amazing book for young readers and for parents to share with their children. It also teaches a great lesson about doing what you love to be happy, Tony loves to cook and because of that he does it well. This book is highly recommended and thanks to the author and the illustrator for making a book kids of all ages will love. I think adults will find it cute and fun also!

The Spy Catchers of Maple Hill, by Megan Frazer Blakemore

From School Library Journal Gr 4–6—Hazel may not be the best musician in her class, but she is a grade A detective. When rumors of Russian spies infiltrating her hometown of Maple Hill, Vermont begin swirling through the neighborhood, Hazel stops building her bomb shelter and starts tailing the most likely suspect—the mysterious Mr. Jones. With the help of Samuel, the new boy in town fascinated by the stories contained in her family's graveyard, the protagonist begins collecting clues and soon finds that most stories are more than they initially appear to the untrained eye. Hazel is a wonderfully memorable character, larger-than-life, and so certain of her well-intentioned, but often misguided, ways. Blakemore perfectly captures that fine line between childhood and early adolescence, when tall tales from large imaginations are quickly formed, friendships with boys are still easy, and a young girl sees her place in the world as an unstoppable force. The storytelling is vivid and descriptive, but it's the characters that will draw readers in, including quiet, unassuming Samuel and Hazel's mother, who serves as a more soft-spoken proponent of change than her incredibly vocal daughter. The book does a wonderful job of displaying the way in which the fear inherent in the McCarthy era turned neighbor against neighbor. While the heart of the story lies within the issues of trust and truth, the writing is never preachy, using Hazel's innate humor to deflect moments that veer close to saccarine or preachy. A strong work of historical fiction for mystery fans.—Nicole Signoretta Sutton, Kingston Elementary School, Cherry Hill, NJ

From Booklist Hazel has a bit of Harriet the Spy in her. She’s not terribly likable, and she loves to snoop. She’d defend her snooping, however. It’s 1953, and Joe McCarthy is telling the country that there are Communists under every rock. And there are lots of rocks in the cemetery Hazel’s family owns. Hazel is quite sure that the new grave digger is a Commie spy, and Hazel has enough self-confidence to figure she can prove it. When Samuel, a boy from an old Maple Hill family, comes back to town and seems equally smart, she’s shaken. But he becomes an ally, willing to share his own deductive skills. Blakemore covers a lot of territory here—the Red Scare, fragile Samuel’s family history, Hazel’s mother’s ambitions—and sometimes the individually interesting stories give the narrative a disjointed feel. However, Hazel is that odd bird, an annoying heroine that readers will still root for, especially as she changes and grows. There’s lots to talk about here, subjects both public and personal, making this a great choice for book clubs or class discussion, and an author’s note offers more about the era. Grades 4-7. --Ilene Cooper

“Hazel's inquisitiveness, independence and imperfections are a winning combination.” ―Kirkus Reviews

“There's lots to talk about here . . . making this a great choice for book clubs or class discussion.” ―Booklist

“The sense of the time period is seamlessly portrayed . . . The real strength of Blakemore's novel is the underlying juxtaposition of a seemingly pleasant small town and that community's harsh reaction to those who are different.” ―The Horn Book Magazine

“A strong work of historical fiction for mystery fans.” ―School Library Journal

“Hazel is an engaging, if not always likable, girl, and her kid's-eye-view of life offers an accessible entryway to the McCarthy/Cold War era. Blakemore's characters are refreshingly three-dimensional . . . Will also appeal to the mystery lovers of the middle grade crowd.” ―BCCB

“Science, history and literature references glow . . . With keen intelligence and bits of humor, the prose slips calmly between narrative perspectives, trusting readers to pick up a revelation that Ephraim and Mallory don't see--and it's a doozy. This one is special.” ―Kirkus Reviews, starred review, on The Water Castle

“What shines through . . . is Blakemore's tender understanding of how these children--and all children--feel about their lives and the adults who control them.” ―The New York Times on The Water Castle

“A book that deserves love.” ―Elizabeth Bird from Fuse8 on The Water Castle

“The Water Castle is full of adventure and mystery, but mostly it's about the importance of family, friendship and home.” ―The Washington Post on The Water Castle

“Blakemore skillfully explores the intersection of science and magic in this multifaceted story . . . a sense of skeptical wonder pervades the book and lingers.” ―Publishers Weekly on The Water Castle

By KidsReads Hazel Kaplantsky is a fifth-grader at Adelaide Switzer Elementary School in Maple Hill, Vermont in 1954 --- the time of the Red Scare, perpetuated by Senator McCarthy. Hazel has always been the smartest kid in her class --- until a new kid, Samuel Butler, arrives. At first there is animosity between them, but the two overcome the obstacles and become best friends.Hazel wants to be a detective; she is anxious for a mystery to appear so she can solve it. So, when a mysterious man named Paul Jones comes to town, she is sure something is going on. She convinces Samuel to work with her to unravel the mystery.Mr. Jones starts meeting with Mr. Short, the foreman at the Switzer Switch and Safe Factory. The factory is under investigation as a possible hotbed for Communist spies, just like the General Electric Plant in Schenectady, New York. Hazel puts two and two together and thinks she has come up with four, but her desire to be a spy and to catch someone doing something wrong overshadows the facts. This is a fictional tale, but author Megan Frazer Blakemore throws in some facts to set it in the era of the Red Scare. Of course she embellishes the story, but much of what she talks about really did happen. As Megan explains in her Author’s Note, the plant in Schenectady, NY really was under investigation for spy activity during this time period, but she made up the part about the Switzer Switch and Safe Factory. Also, since Hazel is great fan of mysteries, facts about the Nancy Drew mysteries are sprinkled throughout the text. This is a great story about the power of gossip and rumors, the fear of Communism, bullies, friendship and growing up.Reviewed by Christine Irvin

Her vitality/vulnerability (almost) make it easy to overlook the fact that she is a little Joe McCarthy clone. And Samuel is the perfect sleuthing partner. All the characters in this story are so "real". You will root for this community to pull together when it seems they are being torn apart by fear.I will definitely be recommending this to some of my more avid readers in the 3rd grade. I wish that Hazel's antics hadn't been so juvenile (at times) because the historical parts of this story are worth sharing with those in high school, as well.

I'm achildren's book snob--crazy picky about what my kids read. So that I bought this book, sight unseen and never hearing a thing about it at all was pretty amazing. That I loved it--equally amazing. So why 4 stars I ask myself? It's not "great children's literature" which is probably why I started to go with a four-star rating, but you know what? I LOVED reading this book. And sometimes just a solid good book needs to be rewarded as such.So here I am with 5 stars and I don't make apologies for that.Hazel is a delightfully interesting and sympathetically flawed girl. She is a fully-developed character that you both love and want to shake a little sense into. Like most of us, she sees the flaws in others that she excuses in herself. And then there's Samuel. If he were any more perfect, he'd be a dreaded "Mary Sue" but he's just imperfect enough to make him a nice steady counterpart to Hazel.I love that the author both avoided the boy-girl silliness that so many books have AND didn't hide that some kids DO. Thank you! Some find the mystery to be lacking, but that's kind of the point of the book--seeing mysteries and intrigue where there is none. And that's a genius twist to an otherwise oft-hackneyed genre. I actually loved that the mystery turned out to be a lot less exciting and a lot more endearing. It's a way to make the mundane and the authentic INTERESTING. Well done. So, I'm back to my 5 stars. I have already bought it in hardback too and purchased "The Water Castle" to see how I like that. Keep writing. I look forward to see what you do next.
