11 of 12 people found the following review helpful. RIP Herb Trimpe By Stephen Vincent Kempton I was very hesitant to review this volume. I reviewed volume 8 of Hulk's Masterworks just six months ago and was confused. While at the time of this writing it has generated fourteen "helpful " it also generated three "unhelpful " votes. The most of any review I have done. I am still puzzled by this .My belief is that people find the art of Herb Trimpe to be a totally polarizing experience. Either they love him or they hate him. The knock on Herb seems to be his art is not realistic. Well the same could be said for Jack Kirby and Steve Ditko.Well Herb just died a month ago and I am feeling very nostalgic . He was the artist on the Hulk for my entire youth. Herb was a kind and humble soul. The one time I got to meet him he made light of his artistic ability and his role in the history of comics.Well if you hate Herb Trimpe's art run away now , this is not the book for you. But if you love Trimpe keep reading.......This volume collects fourteen issues of the Hulk all penciled by Herb Trimpe. Hulk #157 to #170 . With cover dates from 1972 and 1973.With a couple exceptions the writing is by Steve Englehart. Englehart's concept for jade jaws is quite different then his take for The Avengers which he was writing simultaneously . Instead of intricate long oversized arcs. Here Englehart seems to pattern his stories after the Godzilla movies. Every issue the Hulk fights a different Monster . Most stories are done in one's with continued back stories. The Hulk fights a lot of established foes such as The Abomination, The Rhino, Tiger Shark, The Mimic and Modok. Plus Steve creates five new foes who would become reoccurring villains in the Marvel Universe. Wendigo, The Gremlin, Zzzax, The Bi-Beast and The Harpy. Plus both Hank McCoy , The Beast and Clint Barton , Hawkeye co-star in an episode.Sal Trapani inked the first ten stories and he was a great team with Trimpe. The pair some times just used their initials "TNT" on covers and such meaning Trimpe and Trapani. Jack Abel inked the final four. While he wasn't a bad choice, I prefered the more detailed work of Trapani. In Hulk #157 Archie Goodwin makes his final appearance as writer setting up the Betty Ross , Glen Talbot wedding. The Hulk battles The Rhino. In Hulk #158 Roy Thomas and Steve Gerber continue the story when The Hulk and The Rhino take a spaceship to Counter Earth and meet another version of Bruce Banner. Warlock even makes a cameo. For a transition issue the storyline continuity is seamless. In Hulk #159 Steve Englehart begins his run. The Hulk returns to Earth just in time to battle the Abomination. In Hulk #160 Major Talbot and his bride Betty leave for a Honeymoon at Niagara Falls. The Hulk follows even though he was not invited. He encounters Tiger Shark for a battle. In Hulk #162 the Talbots continue to flee into Canada , while the Hulk continues to pursue them. The Hulk meets The Beast and the Mimic in a plot that ties up loose ends from Englehart's Amazing Adventures run. My one complaint here is Herb Trimpe's depiction of The Beast is not very good. In the recent Avengers Masterwork Englehart explains how he got Jim Starlin to do the first Beast appearance in Avengers until George Tuska got the hang off it. Well they could have used that here.In Hulk #162 we get the introduction of the Wendigo. Then in Hulk #163 green skin flees from Canada to the USSR for the introduction the Gremlin. In an interesting side note from Englehart's introduction we learn that two villains named The Gremlin were both created in the same month, the other in Steve. Gerber's Defenders , but it is Englehart's version which would become iconic. In Hulk #164 and #165 Englehart creates a fascinating civilization that lives at the bottom of the ocean floor. The ending to this saga was shocking and powerful. Finally in Hulk #166 Hulk returns to the USA. In this issue we get the creation of the electricity monster Zzzax who reminds me of one of those great monsters Marvel used to do in the pre-superhero era. Hawkeye guest stars and actually defeats Zzzax but in a strange twist of fate Hulk gets the credit. In Hulk #167 Modok returns with giant robotic body. We also see the return of the Hulk's youthful sidekick Jim Wilson. In Hulk #168 Modok who is still around subjects Betty to a massive amount of radiation so that she becomes the monster named the Harpy. The story continues into Hulk #169 and things get even stranger . The Hulk and the Harpy wind up on the floating world of the bird people , former residence of the Red Raven.. The explanation for Bi-Beast's reason for being there is not fully explained to my satisfaction. But he is a weird two headed foe. Some how on this bird world they have a machine which allows you to drain Gamma radiation out of monsters so that Betty can return to normal. This whole storyline is bizarre and reads like a drug induced fever dream. In final story from Hulk #170 the Hulk and Betty fall off the avian world . Betty magically regains clothes in mid-air and they land on an island chock full of monsters. While the main story lacks much in the way of explanations the scenes of Betty and the Hulk surviving on the Island are touching. Englehart only plotted this story with Chris Claremont scripting.Englehart provides a great introduction but the extras are rather slim this volume being only three pages of original art.The art restoration is excellent once again and we get the same beautiful printing job we have come to expect. So if you like the work of Herb Trimpe this book will provide you with hours of nostalgic fun. Highly Recommended.
