3 of 3 people found the following review helpful. Lovely compilation of short stories By Luv2read This wonderfully written compilations of poignant, funny, inspiring, and entertaining stories arrived from the seeds of the ever-changing nature of relationships that rarely last a lifetime. And so it is in the variety of bonding with another, however brief or long, that the stories arise, whether it be a quest for love, a balm for loneliness, escaping from the mundane ennui, or the genuine connecting that transcends situations and moves through the linear clock of our lives, this is the glue that brings these stories together. The story that inspired the title revolves around a plane flight, a noisy child, and a move to a first class seat to sit next to a kind stranger who reminded the author, Christina Hamlett, of a close friend from High School who became a stewardess. The conversation with the stranger continued light and chatty until she mentioned her three roommates who were working Sept. 2001 and never made it home alive. The death of her friends put her on a vowed path of sobriety. When they deplaned at Logan airport it had occurred to the author they didn’t even know each other’s names. The names may be unknown but the memory of that deeply intimate conversation lingers. There were so many wonderful stories, beautifully and well written, too many to recount them all here so I will highlight a few. “Gone The Existence Of Them” by Kelsey Poe poignantly starts out with the narrator, the protagonist of the story; with tears flowing as she mentioned she didn’t get “to have his babies.” People were waiting to offer condolences and it’s clear something horrible had happened to our protagonist’s significant other and sure enough as we read on we learn that her young husband died and she’s only 27 years old. The pain bleeds from the page as we see the dreams the couple had together turn to ash. The tenderness is enhanced when the story ends and there’s a footnote that the author, Kesley Poe, lost her husband in 2013. The devastating silence between those last few words guaranteed this story will not be forgotten any time soon.I loved “Love Me Do” by Tracy Falenwolfe and how it started. 1964 and the Beatles were coming to play at the 4-H Club in the author’s tiny hometown but instead of it being Paul, John, George, and Ringo the band was her father and three of his friends wearing wigs. The laughter in me slowed when I read that the band broke up when they got drafted. Growing up in a closed family, closed in the sense of not communicating about emotional or any deep issues, Falenwolfe tried to understand the situation and the question of her existence. As the author became a parent and reflected back the situation with her father she contemplated maybe he gave all he could, working two jobs and when not at work doing more work around the house. An understanding was forming and around that time there was a sweet gesture to photograph the five grandchildren and give it to her father, but he died before receiving it. He died of a sudden heart attack at 59 years old while shoveling snow. Reflections come when we lose a parent and in the case with Falenwolfe it surprised me to read, “I wish we hadn’t been so much alike.” What wasn’t a surprise was the wish that one of them broke down and communicated to the other; to verify the bond and love that exists between a parent and their child. Then there was the sweet story of a young teenage girl meeting a stranger on a bus ride, Strangers on a Midnight Bus by Charlotte Nystrom that rang close to home: The allure, sensual and emotional, of a stranger and the lingering memory of him years later. Lovely story.Story after story, I’m left contemplating the human condition. All the what ifs and should have done and feel extremely grateful I’m alive and right now have he opportunity to say something I feel must be said, hug someone important, keep quiet when it will serve well, and let my heart stay open through pain and joy for therein the human condition shines and grows. When the last page of this wonderful book was shut, I sat and reflected back on the richness of the relationships and their stories told, that for a brief moment I got to be a fly on the wall to something deeply intimate. The writing excels throughout these moving stories and I’m truly grateful I happened upon and read this book.

Each of these different stories ask that question in a creative way By Book Reviewer I received this book today and literally could not put it down!A lovely reflective group of short stories that place a different perspective on life's should have/would have?

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. When you need to take a break, and center yourself on what really matters By Jill Anne Gambaro It's been a while since I've read a collection of short stories and I found the format really suits my lifestyle right now. Whenever I needed a break, I could open the pages and lose myself for a few minutes. That they were gathered around a theme made me want to come back to it again and again. The stories themselves made me think of those brief encounters, sometimes for a few years, sometimes for a few minutes, which stayed with me long after the other person left. From the stewardess with a drinking problem, to the soldier with a simple question, to the woman who regrets, all three my favorites, the collection shows you just how important we all are in each other's lives. There's a broad range of stories in the book, and I admit to being less interested in the “one that got away” versions than in those fleeting moments where some stranger looks at you and says something that stops your heart in its tracks and sends you in a completely different direction. Still, there's a wide variety here, something that's sure to appeal to everyone. It made me want to write a few of my own which, to me, is the very best gift from a book.

The Improbable Theory of Ana and Zak, by Brian Katcher

From School Library Journal Gr 7 Up—When slacker and sci-fi enthusiast Zak Duquette meets type-A scholar Ana Watson, he is strangely attracted; unfortunately, Ana has no time for anything but academics, as her parents' demands for perfection will ensure. But the two are forced to work together when Zak is coerced by a teacher to join the quiz bowl team with Ana and her whiz-kid younger brother, Clayton. Unfortunately for Zak, the quiz bowl takes place on the same weekend as WashingCon—the sci-fi convention where Zak has had many amazing adventures every year. After Zak extols the glories of the fest, Clayton sneaks away to experience it for himself. In order to keep Clayton's disappearance from her overly controlling parents, Ana must team up with Zak and brave the gathering of geeks, zombies, Vikings, and aliens to find her brother before curfew. In alternating chapters, as they meet one obstacle after another, this seemingly incongruous couple slowly begins to open up and to appreciate each other's talents. While Zak's devil-may-care attitude may be a response to his father's death and his mother's rather hasty marriage to a man with whom he is still not comfortable, Ana feels pressured by her parents to make up for her sister's transgressions that caused her to be banished from their home years ago. Strong personalities, a cast of out-of-this-world characters, and a fast-paced manhunt in an imaginative setting make this an appealing title for tweens and teens. VERDICT A zany romantic comedy for pop culture geeks and "Con" enthusiasts.—MaryAnn Karre, West Middle School, Binghamton, NY

Review “With perfect comic timing and outrageous twists, The Improbable Theory of Ana and Zak will have you cheering for the underdog.” (Robin Constantine, author of The Promise of Amazing)“A love letter to fanboys and fangirls everywhere. On the surface, the story is a lighthearted and entertaining romance, but serious undertones explore the fractured side of parent-child relationships and misfit characters desperate to find a tribe. A delightful romp for anyone still figuring out where they belong.” (Publishers Weekly)“This well-paced novel is an excellent combination of self-discovery and adventure. Give this to fans of Eleanor and Park or Nick and Norah.” (Booklist)“There is something very sweet and nerdy about the entire premise of the story, where the upside-down rules of cosplay and gaming conventions like Washingcon allow the outsiders to be heroes.” (Voice of Youth Advocates (VOYA))“Fans of Nick and Norah’s Infinite Playlist will find con-tentment here.” (Kirkus)“A zany romantic comedy for pop culture geeks and ‘Con’ enthusiasts.” (School Library Journal)“A nerd-friendly adventure story with a gooey, sweet romance center.” (Bulletin of the Center for Children’s Books)

From the Back Cover

The Improbable Theory of Ana and Zak is Stonewall Book Award-winning author Brian Katcher's hilarious he said/she said romance about two teens discovering themselves on an out-of-this-world accidental first date.

It all begins when Ana Watson's brother, Clayton, ditches the quiz bowl semifinals to go to the Washingcon sci-fi convention on what should have been a normal, résumé-building high school trip.

If slacker Zak Duquette hadn't talked up the geek fan fest so much, maybe Clayton wouldn't have broken the rules or jeopardized Ana's last shot at freedom from her uptight parents.

Now, teaming up with Duquette is the only way for Ana to chase down Clayton in the sea of zombies, bikini-clad princesses, and Smurfs. After all, one does not simply walk into Washingcon.

But in spite of Zak's devil-may-care attitude, he may have more in common with Ana than she thinks. Ana and Zak certainly don't expect the long, crazy night, which begins as a nerdfighter manhunt, to transform into so much more. . . .

4 of 4 people found the following review helpful. Another great book from a gifted writer By John Rogers ClarkIV Can uptight and laid back co-exist? Zak, AKA Duke, appears to be ultra-cool and unruffled on the outside, but he's really sad and a bit hurting on the inside. He's still missing his dad who died of cancer a few years ago and he's really uncomfortable around his stepfather, Roger, in part because of how fast he and Zak's mom got married after they met. Zak's really into role playing and all the affiliated stuff that comes with it. He's totally pumped because next weekend he'll be in his element at Washingcon, the highlight of his year. Ana is about as far personality-wise from Zak as one could get. She's ultra-serious, driven (in large part by her parents' rigid expectations to have a perfect daughter), is locked into a perpetually tight schedule and has a responsibility bump the size of Guatemala. She's stressing out about the quiz bowl competition next weekend. She feels full responsibility for the team's success, even to the point of having convinced her parents to let her precocious younger brother, Clayton, be on the team. Two completely different personalities and two completely different sets of weekend plans are about to be dumped into the same bowl of life and get thoroughly mixed together. A recipe for disaster on the surface, but much more fun and interesting underneath. When Mrs. Brinkham, the health teacher and adviser to the quiz bowl team, has Zak step into her office, his life is about to get a lot more interesting. She confronts him with the fact that he downloaded a Wikipedia article and copied it almost word for word when submitting it as his health paper. She gives him a choice: Be an alternate on the quiz team and rewrite the paper for a passing grade, or fail completely and have to take health over again in the summer. It's a tough choice for Zak. The Con is his one happy event now that Dad is gone, but he really wants to go to the community college next fall and not passing health will kill his chance to do so. He agrees to her terms. Ana is less than pleased with him as an alternate and becomes even more so when Clayton starts getting really interested in Zak's stories about previous Cons. She thaws a little when Zak saves the team from defeat in an early round, but when Clayton hops into a taxi later that evening to see what the Con is all about, she freaks completely. If her parents get wind of what her brother is up to, she's sure all the blame will fall on her head. When Zak agrees to help find her brother, they take off in another taxi and what happens over the next several hours is alternately scary and hilarious. Ana has no clue what she's about to encounter, nor does she have any idea how much popularity Zak has with the folks who go to Cons. The cast of characters Brian creates to populate the Con, the language, the events and the misadventures will be familiar to anyone who has attended one or more of these events. He gets it all right and, coupled with his ability to make both Zak and Ana appealing and ever more attracted to each other as the night progresses, makes this a great fun and feel-good read. There's nothing in the book that might deter tweens from reading it, so this is going to be a dandy addition to any library, public or school. I'd love to see it as a movie down the road.

Zak is a slacker in school; he's more interested in science fiction and computers than anything else. Ana is the always-busy, over-achiever whose on every committee and always looking to pad her transcript for college. Zak is interested in Ana but Ana has no time or interest in him. They get thrown together when Zak is in danger of failing Health but the teacher who is also the adviser of the Quiz Bowl team recruits him because she needs another team member for an up-coming tournament. Unfortunately, the Quiz Bowl tournament is the same weekend as the biggest science fiction convention in Washington State and Zak goes every year. So, Zak finds himself in the van on the way to Quiz Bowl with Ana, her younger brother Clayton, and the other two team members. He regales them with tales of the science fiction convention happening only a few miles from the Quiz Bowl Competition. After their first round, which Zak helps them win, they have the evening off before the next round. Clayton decides to go the the convention leaving Ana and Zak to go after him and try to find him and bring him home before their adviser or Ana and Clayton's parents find out he is missing. Most of the book happens at the convention which is filled with all sorts of wild adventure for both Zak and Ana. It brought back memories of the science fiction conventions I have attended filled with oddly dressed characters, geeks of all descriptions, movies, gaming tournaments, and even a vampire ball. This is a world where Zak fits in and Ana needs to depend on his expertise. They manage to stay one step behind Clayton while attracting a drug dealer and a number of people who would like to do either or both Zak and Ana harm.I liked watching Zak and Ana learn more about each other and realize that the other had some valuable things to contribute. I liked the way both Ana and Zak changed after one very intense night at a science fiction convention.

By Rikke Lerche I chose this book because I was in the mood for a light, and potentially fun read, and because I haven't read a book like this in ages.It wasn't exactly all fun, but I did like it, and Ana did have some rather funny punchlines at times, but mostly it's a story about two teenagers, Zak & Ana. Both of them have issues, and stuff they're trying to make right, also they're both pretty funny, inner dialogue wise, without it becoming forced or annoying. This is Zak's and Ana's story told over the duration of only a few days. It isn't just about what happens during those days, though. It's also the story about each of their lives ... Ana's especially. It's about growing up, about realizing what matters, about recognizing patterns, making choices, and facing issues of grave importance. it's a fine portrait of teenage reality. It's obvious that the author cares about his characters, and as they are both equally important, and equally interesting their story makes for a fine read. The story is told, taking turns, from Ana's POV and Zak's POV. Fortunately it's also continuous, so it's not like everything is told twice.A cute little story, and with a lot more to it that one might think. It isn't the world's most exciting book, but I like it in that comfortingly homey way where, a book can some times make you smile and forget about plots, suspense and whatnot. This isn't a genre I would normally choose or expect too much of, but for some reason I enjoyed this one enough to actually give it a 4 stars rating nonetheless. Compared to other books I've read in this genre, it's actually very engaging, and I enjoyed the message. In fact, I like it like I liked The Future of Us.

From School Library Journal Baby/Toddler—This classic tale of three siblings—one who is little (Titch), one a bit bigger (Mary), and one a lot bigger (Peter)—sweetly explores the family dynamics of birth order and the challenges and satisfaction of reaching developmental stages. Titch's persistent attempts to follow in his siblings' footsteps as they play, make music, and build are rewarded when the older kids dig some dirt and fill a flowerpot. Titch plants a tiny seed, and the threesome watch it grow and grow. A lovely reassuring metaphor for the youngest among us.

She understands how devastating the changes at midlife can be, and that it's possible to do something about it. I'd recommend it for any woman, or maybe every woman, as she hits 50 (or more!)

The topics are exactly on point for midlife women (and men who love them). Dr. Barb's advice is sound and clearly stated, offering hope and common sense in areas not all of us are comfortable discussing with our doctors. Very readable.

Reality, it turns out, is often not what you perceive it to be—sometimes, there really is someone out to get you. For fans of Silver Linings Playbook and Liar, this thought-provoking debut tells the story of Alex, a high school senior—and the ultimate unreliable narrator—unable to tell the difference between real life and delusion.

Alex fights a daily battle to figure out what is real and what is not. Armed with a take-no-prisoners attitude, her camera, a Magic 8 Ball, and her only ally (her little sister), Alex wages a war against her schizophrenia, determined to stay sane long enough to get into college. She's pretty optimistic about her chances until she runs into Miles. Didn't she imagine him? Before she knows it, Alex is making friends, going to parties, falling in love, and experiencing all the usual rites of passage for teenagers. But Alex is used to being crazy. She's not prepared for normal. Can she trust herself? Can we trust her?

From School Library Journal Gr 9 Up—Alex is starting her senior year at a new high school, making a clean start after an incident at her previous school. She just wants to keep her grades up and perform her mandatory community service so she can get into college. But Alex knows she'll have a hard time achieving these goals, since she has paranoid schizophrenia. She keeps her illness to herself, hoping that between her doctor, her medication, and her own homegrown coping strategies, no one else need ever know. But on her first day at her new school, she meets a boy who looks exactly like someone she hallucinated on the day her illness first manifested 10 years earlier. And although Miles is not entirely friendly, he may be the only person who understands her. This is a wonderfully complicated book. Adolescence can be absurd, breathless, and frantic on its own. Combine it with mental illness, and things get out of control very quickly. Zappia sets a fast pace that she maintains throughout. Readers will be kept on their toes with quick-witted dialogue, pop culture references, and some odd but accurate word choices, as well as plot twists and big reveals (which may inspire some to reread and see where hints were dropped). While Alex may be unreliable, she is sympathetic from the start. Miles, however, is somehow more complicated than Alex and will almost certainly make readers question their responses to him. VERDICT Zappia tackles some big issues in her debut, creating a messy, hopeful, even joyful book.—Geri Diorio, Ridgefield Library, CT

Review “Debut novelist Zappia presents readers with a wholly unreliable narrator, [but] the characters all seem authentic, thanks to Zappia’s careful attention to detail.” (Booklist)“Alex is a funny, touching, determined, and smart character, and her story is complex and interesting. Fans of E. Lockhart’s We Were Liars and Matthew Quick’s Silver Linings Playbook will immerse themselves in this nuanced look at trying to live a “normal” life while coping with mental illness.” (Voice of Youth Advocates (VOYA))“The storytelling texture here recalls Andrew Smith and Sean Beaudoin…There are moments of genuine tragedy redeemed by the acceptance Miles and Alex find in each other amidst all of their imperfections; if love doesn’t conquer all, it certainly makes the battles easier to bear. Readers…will enjoy this quirky trip.” (Bulletin of the Center for Children’s Books)“Alex’s sardonic voice and the rapid, Heathers-like dialogue will hold readers’ interest.” (Publishers Weekly)

"Okay. But I ask the questions this time."

"Fine."

"If I guess it before five, I'll be really disappointed."

The corners of his lips twisted up in a smile and he said, "Don't insult me."

"Are you alive?"

"Yes."

"Do you live here?"

"Yes."

"Do I know you?"

"Yes."

"Did I make you up?"

Zappia seriously impressed me with her ability to create these lovely and realistic characters. The main character Alex suffers from paranoia and schizophrenia so she never knows what's real and what isn't. She takes pictures of the things around her so she can figure out whether or not she's hallucinating or not. The writing couldn't have been any better, the way the story slowly but surely progressed was unique and well done. If you haven't read this book yet, you should definitely have it on your list.Alex is an unreliable narrator and I absolutely loved that. Yes, it took a little bit to get used to the fact that you're never 100% sure if what Alex sees is really there, but I thought that made it all the more exciting to discover. This book is far from predictable, though I did see a few things coming. However, I was still surprised by some of the things and it was much more suspenseful than I was expecting. Both Alex and Miles aren't lovable in the beginning. Miles will surely rub you the wrong way in the beginning, you don't know why he's being so cold towards everyone, including Alex. Midway through though, we learn more about his story and at that point, you'll fall in love with him. I liked that there was no case of insta-love here, this was a very very slow building romance and that's exactly how I like it!I'm a sucker for flawed characters and this is exactly what we find in "Made You Up." I felt like the dialogue between Miles and Alex was so hilarious and relatable. They are both witty teens, but it never felt like TOO much to me. This was a highly gorgeous book that's bound to stay with me for a long time. I highly recommend it to anyone who loves reading unique YA contemporary books.

I just this moment finished Made You Up and I am a big, overly stuffed, box of beautifully tangential emotions. I really enjoyed this book. The writing was beautiful, the characters are so rich and so complex that you can't help but love/detest/cheer for/insanely wish for the demise of the respective ones as perscribed by the author. The heroine Alex is beautifully broken yet whole in ways that matter most. Yes, she has trouble discerning if what she is experiencing at any given moment is real or if people she is interacting with on such intimate levels are even truly there but her ability to trust/keep trying/sympathize with/befriend is remarkably innocent and pure...she is definitely someone that you would feel lucky to have in your corner, to call your friend. Miles and Tucker are both incredibly easy to fall in love with. They both display a rarely given, beautiful loyalty as well as an amazing capability to accept what could easily be seen as an insurmountable personal flaw....and The Club?? I wanted in!! Alex's parents are loving yet humanly flawed in their own Life weary ways. The tempo of the book is quick enough to not force you to skim yet slow enough to explain (as best they could for a book with a MC not firmly rooted in Reality) so that each charming detail may be savored. I truly enjoyed getting lost in its pages all the way up until the end. The ending?!? What an unsatisfying, copout of a closing to a really lovely book. How pray tell should it have ended? I am not fully sure...I only know that it felt disjointed, as if it did not really mesh with the book as a whole. This might have been the idea since schizophrenia is undoubtedly a disjointed experience. It does sound a bit convoluted but all I know for sure is that this was a great distraction from my Reality and that's what I look for in a good book!

It was interesting to be in someone's head that didn't know what was real and what was made up. You had a couple really cool moments where I didn't even know what was going on, and I liked that feeling. Though I will say that some of you was very predictable for me. I liked you, even if I didn't love you!-The White UnicornI love unreliable narrators, and that's just what Alex is. I thought that this book was refreshing, though I also thought that the story got a bit out of hand at moments. Zappia is obviously an author who is willing to think outside of the box, and I think that even though every element of the story didn't work for me, she has a really interesting voice. Needless to say, I was impressed with her debut.Alex has schizophrenia, and she's learned how to make sense of the world around her. No one in her new school knows that, and she plans on keeping it that way. She has so many little quirks, like taking pictures of things that might or might not be there, asking deep questions and looking for answers in a Magic 8 Ball, and questioning everything. So she's basically a regular teenager, but it's her carefully created voice that makes you feel like something is a bit off. I have to admit that I loved living in her head for the duration of the novel.Zappia's way of writing characters fit the book perfectly. I liked that we got to know each one of them really well, while also questioning every single motive that they had. Were they really Alex's friends? Was she making them up? Were the people she was surrounding herself with even there in reality? I had all of these thoughts rolling around in my head as I read, but I still found myself liking the people in Alex's life. Real or not.I did have some issues with the story. While it worked well for the book, I found that the high school setting was odd. I found the scenes that took place outside of the school worked much better for me. Meaning that a good portion of the novel felt a little forced for me. I wish that wasn't the case, but it totally was.In the end, the good outweighed the not as good for me. If you like books that leave you guessing and are told through the eyes of an untrustworthy narrator, give this one a shot! You can read this and many other reviews on my YA book blog The White Unicorn!

As a 27 year old girl/lady/female, I’ve had plenty of dating experiences, not just from me but from my friends/peers. One admission that i have is that I’ve had a lot of men in my life. This admission mainly comes from the fact that i realized i had been looking for a father figure. As cliche as it sounds, “ most women marry their fathers or who they wanted their fathers to be”. I found my truth after one of my boyfriends said he is not my dad. I sought help because i was hurt plenty of times and i didn't know why i went back to the same situation. My desire to help young and older women in the dating game comes from the pain I’ve been through. A wise woman once said, it’s better to learn from other people's pain than your own pain.

Review Praise for the Paddington series: 'I've always had great respect for Paddington... He is a British institution.' Stephen Fry 'Paddington has joined Pooh as one of the great bears of English children's literature.' The Teacher 'Michael Bond's accident-prone bear...has become one of the most enduring of children's characters.' The Bookseller

From the Back Cover

The stories of Paddington Bear have delighted children all around the world for over 50 years.

"Oh dear," said Paddington, as everyone turned to look at him accusingly. "I'm in trouble again." Somehow trouble came naturally to Paddington.

What other bear could upset a whole movie theater by standing on his seat to boo the bad guy in the film? Or drip ice cream on the people down below? Or flood the Laundromat and saw Mr. Curry's kitchen into little pieces? Only Paddington! But when Paddington's head is so full of ideas, some things are bound to go wrong!

About the Author

Michael Bond began chronicling Paddington’s adventures in his first book, A Bear Called Paddington, published in 1958. Fortunately, bears don’t need much encouragement, and Paddington has since filled the pages of twelve further novels, a variety of picture books, and many other projects written for the young at heart. Paddington’s creator is still writing and lives in London, England, not far from Paddington Station, where it all began.

I liked it when Paddington fell into the river because it was funny. I recommend this book for ages 6-9. If you can, try to read the whole Paddington series.Kathryn M

Another treat from 32 Windsor Gardens By Omnes In this third Paddington Bear volume, we discover other adventures involving our good bear and his new family. Whether it is at the river, at an auction or at a restaurant, the comic situations in this volume are a treat for everybody. Of my favorites, the one at the restaurant and the home while Mr. and Mrs Brown are sick remain the most memorable to me. With Peggy Fortnum's ink illustrations, also available on the Kindle, this electronic edition of Paddington Bear is another good read from Michael Bond.

0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. See the World Through Paddington's Eyes By darklittlelady Like A Bear Called Paddington, the first instalment in the Paddington series, Paddington Helps Out is set in London, UK. Again, Michael Bond takes us to familiar places like the Browns’ home, the market, or Mr Gruber’s fascinating shop. We are, however, also introduced to new locations like a fancy restaurant, or the launderette and, as always, we see them like Paddington, as utterly exciting and strange.By now you should all be familiar with our main character Paddington. The young, charming and naive bear from the darkest Peru always means well and has a big heart. It is just wonderful to see the world through his eyes.Like all the books in the series, Paddington Helps Out is divided into short stories that are connected to each other. The stories in this book are about Paddington trying to help out, but it wouldn’t be him if things would go as planned. Paddington Helps Out is a fun and entertaining read that teaches us that even a bad situation can turn into something good in the end.

This is the magic story of Rumplestiltskin told in rhymes for your delight.

The beautiful illustrations will be found inside the book.

Enjoy the reading!

A miller had a daughter who was very fair; he liked to spread stories without a care. Saying his daughter could spin straw into gold; this was indeed a story that was very bold. The story happened to reach the king; and he wanted to see everything. But the story was actually just a lie; and the poor maiden began to cry. She was therefore brought into a room; filled with straw and she felt gloom. She had to finish with the rising of the sun; Oh, if only she could just escape and run! The king decreed that she should die; if he ever found out it was all a lie. As she cried there came a voice: “Maiden fair, I give you a choice! I will spin all your straw into gold; But I need something that you hold.” “I do have nothing at all to give; but grant my wish to help me live.” “Your first born child is what I’ll get; So don’t you worry, don’t you fret.” “I’ll never have a child,” she thought; she promised but it didn’t mean a lot. The little man set off to work all night long; while he hummed a very strange song. The golden straw in the room began to fill; for the price of the ring as this was his will. The king returned when the sun was high; and all the gold twinkled in his eye. Surely this maiden was one of a kind; now a bride was what he had in mind. He married her and she was now queen; certainly the fairest the land had ever seen. She gave birth to a baby boy after a year; and the little man came back: oh, such fear! “Please don’t take now my son away; I’ll do anything to make him stay.” “I give you three days to guess my name; Queen, you’ll never win this game!” She was worried to lose her son; but now the game had begun. She took walks and read all names; this was the cruelest of all games! But one night she heard a strange song; something she hadn’t heard in so long. “Tomorrow for sure I will have the child; no one knows the name I’ve styled”. The queen will never win this game; for Rumplestiltskin is my name!” The queen’s heart beat very fast; She had found out his name at last! The little man went back on the third day; He was then ready to take the baby away. “Is your name Eustace? Jigger or Crocket? Hortense? Pinkney, Olwin or Dockett?” Rumplestiltskin laughed very aloud; “You’ll never guess, I am so proud!” “But wait, I will win this cruel game; for Rumplestiltskin is your name!” “Someone has told you, this be true!”; he kicked the ground and was torn in two! The queen and her son were safe at last; because the evil promise was not cast! And the moral of this story is: Try not to be greedy. Of course, you’ll always want something you can’t have right away, but the trick here is to be thankful for what you have. Also, avoid making stories up. It will land you and others in trouble. Be honest!

They're easy to follow and the storylines are written quite well following a childrens format that maintins their attention but still trys to teach them things. This book in particular lets them cherish the notion of avoiding greed and thats something that I quite liked. I had a good time reading this with the children and they seemed to really enjoy it aswell.

The Boys of Fire and Ash, by Meaghan McIsaac

From School Library Journal Gr 6 Up—In the Ikkuma Pit, the Brothers stick together and look out for each other in a world with no mothers (or women in general) and it takes everything they have to survive. When their Leaving Day arrives, they go out into the world, never to return, and another young boy mysteriously appears to replace them. Urgle is a young man trying to keep himself and his "little brother" Cubby alive. He is suspicious about the outside world, and he is equally suspicious of Blaze, a Brother who has returned to the Ikkuma Pit after leaving. Blaze speaks of monsters who chased him over the wall and back into the Pit. When those same monsters kidnap Cubby and drag him into the outside world, Urgle, along with an unlikely group of Ikkuma brothers, embark on a journey to rescue Cubby and eventually find out what is waiting for them in the outside world. McIsaac's debut fantasy novel is fast-paced and heartstopping. Her world is fully formed (although it does take a while before the parameters of this universe truly comes into focus). The characters are fleshed out and feel authentic. This is a great stepping stone for those tweens looking for a postapocalyptic novel without diving head first into the violence and social mores of similar YA titles. There is a hint of romance, appropriate for the intended audience. VERDICT This self-contained story is an entertaining read that will be enjoyed by many.—Christopher Lassen, Brooklyn Public Library

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. I loved it, but it won't be for everyone. By Bluerose's Heart Other than the ending, which I'm still having a bit of trouble accepting, I loved this book. It won't be for everyone, though! It has a science fiction(ish) kind of feel to it. Despite being completely different and unique from other stories out there, I couldn't help but think of the realm of Indiana Jones as I read it, with the myths, temples, rituals, and all. Peter Pan's "lost boys" went through my mind quite a bit, too. It's kind of a dark story, with action, fighting, and violence. There was only one disturbing scene, for me. (Of course, I'm a wimp!)Another thing that I loved about this book, but I believe will be a turnoff for most, is the lack of romance. There is none, other than a bit of innocent girl/boy fascination. (The main characters have been separated from the opposite gender their whole lives.) I am becoming increasingly annoyed at corny romances, so, thank you, McIsaac, for creating such an awesome story, and leaving the corny romance behind AND for creating a clean story that I can freely recommend to friends and family. The ending. When I first ended the book, I told my husband that while I should be used to it by now, I hate ending a book, only to realize that it's actually part of a series, and I'll have to wait another year for the next installment. After searching around, and thinking on the ending more, I realized that this may very well be a standalone. After discovering that this book *seems* to be a rewrite/republish for a self-published book titled "Urgle", I assume even more so that this is a standalone. If this is a standalone, I can see some beauty in it, even if I hope for another book. Everything isn't tied up in a nice, neat bow, so you're free to end things as you want to on certain things. There was one particular part that I especially didn't like, and I'd like to rewrite it. Still, I'd like the loose strings tied up a bit more for me, so I'm holding out hope for another book. (I've still been unable to find out for sure if this is a standalone, and not knowing is driving me insane, so if you know, please let me know.) :)Overall, this is a treasure in the world of YA/middle grade books, and I will be grabbing anything else penned by McIsaac! It's a perfect read for both boys and girls that enjoy the science fiction realm. I'm an adult woman, and I loved it, too!Content:Very mild profanity. (I can actually only recall one word, and it happens to be the first word in the book.)No sex(or even romance, for that matter)Mild violence(one disturbing scene involving wasps or flying insects of some sort was disturbing, though it's probably mild for most)

It is well written and thoughtful. It has an intriguing plot and deep rich characters. It is absolutely riveting. I picked it up and only stopped reading for sleep. It has young boys living on their own in the pit of a volcano, fending for themselves and raising each other. This book is obviously going to be a high interest novel for teenage and pre-teenage boys, a group fairly difficult to please.

I think this one is definitely one of them. It's a great tale, fast-paced and appealing to the younger generation who enjoy reading stories about surviving in the wild without adults around. One of my twins absolutely love this kind of story, so it will be interesting to see what he thinks of it.This book focuses on Urgle, a young boy who is charged with raising a younger brother, named Cubby. Urgle is part of a tribe called Ikkuma, a society of young boys who have been abandoned shortly after birth to live among boys and boys only. When they reach a certain number of years, they celebrate a "Leaving Day," which means they then strike out on their own. No one knows how it is started and no one knows anything different than what they have always grown up with.Till one day, Cubby is kidnapped by a group of goblins and Urgle chases after him. He may be "useless" in his society, but he wasn't going to give up the fight for his brother. Two of his friends joined the chase with him into the big unknown. Then Urgle and his brothers are on a journey that expanded beyond their comprehension especially when an older brother, Blaze, joins in the story. One thing leads to another and then another, with mystical tales thrown in the midst and wild chases and confusion reigning throughout the rest of the book. I couldn't put it down. The only reason why I am giving this a five star is because it is confusing in spots, where I didn't feel like the tale was fleshed out more. It also left me with more questions than answers, which as a reader, find it frustrating. I am hoping that there will be a second book that will explain more of the myths in this novel as well as explore the relationships between the characters. This is a fast-paced novel and definitely a good read.

0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. Waste of time and money. By Ptart I honestly couldn't believe how bad this book was. The content was unbearably boring and completely unimaginative. It felt more like sex 101 than secrets to a perfect sex life. To make matters worse, it's written in broken English and the editing was horrible... misspellings throughout. Don't even bother.

Sunday nights are special for Evie and Grandma. That's when they go on their weekly shopping spree. Grandma flips open the newspaper to see what s advertised, and the imaginary tour of neighborhood stores begins. Toting a wallet filled with colorful pretend bills, Evie and Grandma take turns "buying" whatever catches their fancy. A big chunk of ham, a sofa with a secret, and a dress with spangles are just a few of the treasures they purchase. Most special of all is the jewelry box Evie chooses for the gold heart necklace Mama gave her before leaving to serve in the army and the bouquet of flowers Evie leaves as a surprise for Grandma. Overflowing with whimsy and a sweet grandmother-granddaughter relationship, this picture book is a joyous celebration of imagination, family love, and making a lot out of what you've got.

From School Library Journal K-Gr 2—Filled with heartfelt homespun sentiment, Derby's latest picture book is an homage to imagination and familial love. It is Sunday night, and young Evie and her grandmother don their pajamas, crawl into bed, and grab a pair of scissors and a newspaper for their weekly shopping adventure. Grandma wears her feathered blue hat, and Evie carries her big black purse. As they turn the newspaper pages, they make believe. First, they purchase a ham from Hook's Grocery—it's on sale today! And Hills's Furniture is closing. They could use a new rug. At Pace's Jewels and Treasures, Evie finds a beautiful box, perfect for the necklace Mama gave her before she left for the army. And the shopping continues, all purchases paid for with brightly colored "bills" that Grandma allocates for each shopping trip. Children and adults alike will find a little bit of their own upbringing in the shared adventures with Grandma and Evie. Grandma's wise advice and nurturing manner are comforting and familiar without being overly sentimental. Strickland's illustrations are a vibrant mix of watercolor, acrylic, and wax pencil, digitally interspersed with fanciful, oversize images of whimsy and delight. VERDICT A splendid choice for collections in need of picture books that feature African American characters, but, more significantly, a lovely title that celebrates imagination and the importance of family.—Carol Connor, Cincinnati Public Schools, OH

Jennings I found this amusingly nostalgic because when I was about five years old, my sister and I used to cut up mail order catalogs and tape our favorite things to pieces of construction paper. This is a cute little story about Evie and her grandma doing that version of "window-shopping". The narration by Evie has a definite childlike train of thought, for example:"I choose a pink and white skirt, a fuzzy sweater, purple tights, and purple barrettes for my hair. That's what I'll wear when I win the gold trophy for Best Second-Grade Speller in Ohio. I'm already the best second-grade speller in my school. I won when I spelled SCISSORS right, after Curtis Williams left out the 'c'. "Even though there are two or three paragraphs of text on each page, the language is simple enough for younger kids to understand, and older ones (and parents) will appreciate the detailed descriptions and made-up names of products and stores. The illustrations are whimsical, colorful, and clever...Evie and grandma interacting with larger-than-life-size versions of the items and people they've cut from the advertisements. One word of warning...there is one part which is, or might be, sad: it's only mentioned a couple of times, and the details are vague: "mama gave me my necklace the day she left for the army." Everywhere she goes, Evie wears a locket with her mom's picture in it. At the end, she "buys" flowers and places them beside her mom's picture before she goes to bed. We COULD assume that her mom is alive and well and coming back at the end of her tour, and Evie is only at Grandma's temporarily, but it's never stated or implied whether the mom is alive or dead. And kids will probably ask.

We put in play money I bought and the newspaper ads of things they wanted to "buy" in the purses which kept them busy having fun on a car trip! Beautiful illustrations and story of fun things to do without spending lots of money.
