A Court of Thorns and Roses, by Sarah J. Maas

From School Library Journal Gr 9 Up—When 19-year-old Feyre kills a wolf in the barren woods near her home in Prythian, she thinks it might be enough to help her family survive another long winter. Instead, a monstrous creature soon comes to the cottage, accusing Feyre of murder and demanding she return with him to the Fae realm as payment for the life she took. Feyre finds herself held on a lavish estate belonging to an elite Fae creature known as Tamlin. Over the course of her captivity, Feyre soon learns that life in the Fae realm can be as much of an opportunity as a punishment. When her feelings for Tamlin shift from loathing to lust, Feyre also realizes little will be able to keep them apart—not even the threat of evil lurking on the borders of the estate. Something that has cursed Tamlin for centuries may destroy him and his realm if Feyre can't find a way to stop it. Maas follows up her "Throne of Glass" novels (Bloomsbury) with this series opener. Readers will find the author's trademark blend of action, romance, and witty banter as well as a sexier, edgier tone. This retelling of "Beauty and the Beast" and "Tam Lin" (with elements from ancient Greek mythology thrown in) has a strong focus on Feyre's physical attraction to Tamlin, but characters lacking in dimension detract from Feyre's strengths as a capable but rash heroine. Uneven pacing includes a slow start followed by a game-changing information dump, and then a more action- and less romance-filled second half. VERDICT A weak fantasy with strong romance elements. Good for fans of Maas's previous books looking for a more mature read.—Emma Carbone, Brooklyn Public Library

Much like Sarah J. Maas' first book, THRONE OF GLASS did. I mean blew me away. Can't stop reading. Can't put the book down. Why can't I drive and read? - Blew me away. The world was original and well constructed, but the characters and their transitions are what did me in. Feyre was similar to Maas' Throne of Glass main character, Celaena, but she is more innocent and compelling. Her story is more of a coming of age story as she is brought to this crazy world. I at first doubted Maas as I read the book, thinking she was making the characters act oddly just to push forward the plot. But, in the end...it all came together and I was ashamed...so ashamed for doubting Maas. She's a genius. This book rocked my world.I have one thing to say though, this book is not what I would consider a Young Adult, even though it is classified as this on some lists. This is definitely New Adult, but I don't think genres are updated enough to classify this correctly. So please be aware of this. New Adult is very different from YA. The tone is YA, the story is not. The main character is 19, the characters engage in sexual encounters that are explicitly detailed. This is not a book I would recommend for a teen audience. This is a mature Fantasy with an intense romance subplot. There are graphic and violent scenes, death, destruction and all that good stuff that adults get to read. Enjoy. This is a must read.

It is a bit of a hybrid retelling of "East of the Sun and West of the Moon" with a little "Beauty and the Beast" thrown in. I was pleasantly surprised to find that while the framework from those stories is evident in the general plot, the details are unique and I wasn't always able to guess what would happen next. Maas does a good job of taking these stories and making them her own, which was nice to see because retellings can become tedious when they are too predictable. I suspect any fans of her other books will be thrilled with this new world and nothing I say will deter them, nor would I want to.However, aside from liking the plot, I was not blown away by this book. I've read Sarah Maas before (Throne of Glass) and thought that book was just ok. I was still excited to get my hands on this one and give it a try because of the early praise I was seeing on Goodreads; unfortunately, and this is only my opinion, I found the writing to be weak and lackluster, and that is the main reason why I'm only giving it three stars. In my experience, the difference between YA and NA is slim, but NA books typically have older protagonists in more mature situations and usually have more explicit sexual content than the YA "fade to black" variety. In that sense, because it has some PG-13 sex in it, Court of T&R is technically a new adult book-- yet it still felt like a YA book to me. It contained all of the typical YA tropes that just won't die: first-person narrator, insignificant young girl who accomplishes unimaginable feats, negative internal woe-is-me self talk, and more than one gorgeous man vying for her attention. If those things bug you, be advised before heading into this one.Surprisingly, I'm actually not holding the trope pitfalls against this book, though. Like I said before, I really did get caught up in the plot and it kept me turning pages quickly until I was done. My biggest complaint with this book was the writing itself. I don't expect high literature when I pick up books like this, I pick them up for a fun afternoon escape, but I still expect some degree of finesse from best-selling authors. I want descriptions that help me see things, rather than generalities such as "…So much color, so much sunlight and movement and texture… I could hardly drink it in fast enough. To paint it would be useless, would never do it justice."That told me absolutely nothing about why this land of the Fae was so breathtaking. Not all descriptions were like that, there were a few good moments, but most of the time I was unimpressed with the descriptions and the word choices. Repeated turns of phrase, such as "a chill spider-walked down my spine," become distracting when they are used multiple times, and I was considerably bothered by the incessant use of the "as if" similes. I'm not usually one to let minor writing quirks annoy me, but I felt that this book was dragged down by a classic, and severe, case of "telling, not showing." Any time the author didn't trust me as the reader to be smart enough to figure out what the characters' body language was saying, she just had the narrator explain it in painful detail. I found this insulting to my intelligence. But, those are my only real complaints.Basically, this is a beach read. An airplane read. An "I'm sick and need a distraction," read. It's not particularly well-written and the tropes might annoy the more jaded readers of the YA genre, but if you know you already like Sarah Maas's style and the plot synopsis intrigues you, give it a try. You may enjoy it more.

First, this is a very nice retelling of Beauty and the Beast along with a couple of other fairy tales. Maas did not stick to the old narratives but invented her own fairy tale retelling within the framework of Fantasy. That said, I very much liked her retelling and adore her fairies, which are wicked. One of the important qualities of fantasy writing is emotionally invested description that keeps the story alive and the reader glued. Maas excels at this.Second, no one in YA writes action scenes like Maas. Her action bits, those fights/tests under the mountain, are incredible, but all the way through the book, she writes good action in every little happening. That's her gift. Her other gift is the power of story which is character and how she drives the narrative with character. It's amazing how she is able to do that. I haven't read but one book of hers, her first, and I imagine this book and the remaining ones of her Throne of Glass series highlight her ability to create beautiful chapters that involve action after action. I will be reading everything of hers. It's wonderful work. The story centers around a young girl named Feyre who is living in poverty and supporting her hungry family by hunting. This is the inciting incident which leads the heroine into the world of the fairy. As much as I would have loved to read this book in third-person point of view like The Throne of Glass, I perfectly understand, after reading, why Maas chose to keep her secrets. After all, Feyre falls into a world of deadly but beautiful creatures. I think the book began a little slowly but after Feyre enters the Spring Court, it's a lively read, mixed with romance, adventure, and some mystery. Dangers are lurking everywhere.I hate to admit this now, because I don't know how the series will end, but I am definitely shipping Feyre and Rhysand! I mean, Rhysand didn't even enter the book till about halfway, and then he departed very quickly and showed up at the climax and resolution. He won my heart. This writer really knows how to create character. It's force of nature with her. I loved this book, and so far, this year, it's my favorite YA novel. Of course, some are calling this a NA book because there is a wonderful romantic scene with Feyre and Tamlin. Talk about a love story. But oh, I have a feeling it's going to be a bumpy ride!Wonderful book. Romantic. Pure joy. Now let me enter The Night Court and be happy!

Augie Hobble lives in a fairy tale―or at least Fairy Tale Place, the down-on-its-luck amusement park managed by his father. Yet his life is turning into a nightmare: he's failed creative arts and has to take summer school, the girl he has a crush on won't acknowledge him, and Hogg Wills and the school bullies won't leave him alone. Worse, a succession of mysterious, possibly paranormal, events have him convinced that he's turning into a werewolf. At least Augie has his notebook and his best friend Britt to confide in―until the unthinkable happens and Augie's life is turned upside down, and those mysterious, possibly paranormal, events take on a different meaning.

Return to Augie Hobble, by Lane Smith

From School Library Journal Gr 4–6—Smith's first novel begins with a scattered and zany atmosphere. That's entirely appropriate, given its setting at a struggling New Mexico amusement park. It may, however, present as much of a problem in attracting and retaining readers as Fairy Tale Place has in luring in customers. Augie's failed his Creative Arts class at the aptly named Gerald R. Ford Middle School and must complete a project over the summer. His story is interspersed with his cartoon ideas for the assignment, which make it clear that Augie lacks decisiveness more than creativity. These pieces, along with frequent insertions of Smith's illustrations, break up the text in ways which will appeal to kids who enjoy art-heavy, journal-form novels. About a quarter of the way through, intersections of the folkloric and the paranormal combine to give a more coherent direction to the narrative, despite our view through the scrim of implausibility. Werewolves, UFOs, and communications from the world beyond are prominently featured, but it's the fate of Augie's best friend and Augie's struggle to cope with responsibility for it that deepen the book and make it more touching than it initially seems. VERDICT Readers who persevere through the broad comedy will find a story with heart within.—Miriam Lang Budin, Chappaqua Library, NY

6 of 7 people found the following review helpful. Funny, Ambitious, Strange, Wise and Touching By Pop Bop This is a marvelous and remarkable novel, and if you'll bear with me for a moment I'll tell you why I think that.It starts out on a very predictable path as a summer school-daze middle grade comedy. Augie works at the family fairy tale themed amusement park, which is a bit worn out around the edges. Augie is a perceptive and good-humored kid for the most part. He's observant and as a narrator he's given to wry, deadpan and cleverly humorous asides. Mom and Dad are pretty together, Augie's best friend is a funny wise-acre, and the park employees are quirky, decent and fun. There are lots of very funny jokes and puns built around the park and its guests, and once we add a school bully and a possible love interest it seems that this book is going to just wander down a predictable, but still entertaining path, to a mellow pre-ordained upbeat conclusion. That's where you would be wrong, because about one-quarter of the way in the book goes off the standard-middle-grade-comedy rails and at the half-way point we are well into an X-Files/magical realism/problem novel realm that you would never have seen coming.MILD SPOILERS. At first it just looks like Augie's suspicions that things are amiss in "Fairy Tale Place" are a clever way to highlight or represent the challenges and insecurities that go with being a middle grader. But then we drift into concrete instances of something more than nerves and an overactive imagination being at work. Then a tragic event comes out of nowhere, and Augie has to come to grips with his "guilt" and his need for "punishment". Things get weirder and we go deeper into the rabbit hole before Augie finds the way out, the mundane and the fantastic mysteries are sorted out, and Augie is set back on the path of reality a sadder, wiser, older, but still funny, and re-energized, kid. There is so much going on here, and it is handled with a light touch, a fast pace, and just a tremendous store of knowing grace and generosity on the author's part. Augie is a wonderfully appealing and decent and authentic hero, and every single character ends up with exactly what he or she deserves. The book feels sort of leisurely and scattered, but that is deceptive. It actually zips along as a middle grade read, is tightly plotted, and doesn't waste a line or a scene. The upshot is that this book works as a tale that suggests real depth of feeling, but it also works as just a funny fantastic tale. You can read it to be entertained or to be intrigued or just to enjoy the snappy dialogue and funny set pieces. A book that works on so many levels for middle grade readers of greatly varying confidence and understanding is a real find, and one I am happy to encourage you, intrepid browser, to sample. Please note that I received a free advance ecopy of this book in exchange for a candid review. Apart from that I have no connection at all to either the author or the publisher of this book.

Unrealized Potential and Lack of Direction in RETURN TO AUGIE HOBBLE By KidsReads RETURN TO AUGIE HOBBLE by Lane Smith follows Augie Hobble, a young man who has some attention problems and whose family runs a fairy tale theme park full of strange goings-on. It's a nice setup, the conflict rather immediate and compelling: Augie is having trouble with bullies and having trouble in school. Plus, he's not alone --- his best friend, Britt, is also being bullied, and Augie struggles with whether to stand up for himself or for his friend. While RETURN TO AUGIE HOBBLE is full of potential, I think that the potential is mostly unrealized. The writing is charming enough and the characters are interesting, if a bit predictable. Augie's voice is interesting, smooth, a little bit twisted and funny; and the setting is certainly entertaining and original. However, the plot that weaves it all together is a bit of a mess and the work as a whole suffers from a lack of direction and momentum.I felt like RETURN TO AUGIE HOBBLE couldn’t quite decide what it wants to be. It starts out with Augie having to work on a replacement Creative Arts project after failing on his first attempt. Augie bounces around a huge number of ideas that would pass, but he doesn’t have the confidence to choose one. The book takes a rather abrupt and tragic shift, though, without any real warning. And another. And another. From bullying and school to werewolves and government conspiracies to death and grief and guilt to ghosts and finally back to bullies, with a few daring-dos thrown in for good measure, the book quickly loses sight of what it was trying to do.Not that the different styles and focuses are bad. There are a few quite poignant moments that Smith works into the book, along with some stunning visuals and funny scenes and lines. But for all the marks it hits, it misses more. For all the humor and charm, it's cut and limited by confusion and jarring shifts. Plots that had been simmering throughout the book suddenly flare and die only to be replaced by completely new ideas. It's like the book is mirroring Augie's inability to focus on any one thing. That would be an interesting way to read the story if it were intentional, but as it stands, there's nothing to suggest that the book is meant to be read that way. Instead it comes off as more unpolished, more accidentally garbled.Really, RETURN TO AUGIE HOBBLE is a book with a lot going on. Some of it is compelling and done well, but too much is too confusing and muddied to provide much of a satisfying reading experience. There is fun to be had in reading RETURN TO AUGIE HOBBLE, but I found the jumbled style to be more distracting than captivating.Reviewed by Charles Payseur

This book just like Lane's many other successes is filled with quirky characters, great illlustrations, and a story that it truly written for middle schoolers! It is hard to find books for boys in middle school - one that will keep their attention, interested, but still has a message, and this one is it! I love that it does talk about so many issues that middle school children do deal with on a daily basis, but still has that element of fantasy too. What a great summer read! Can't wait to hear what my students think of it when school starts!

Scott Pilgrim Color Hardcover Volume 6: Finest Hour, by Bryan Lee O'Malley

From Booklist O’Malley wraps up his megahit slacker opera in this sixth volume, at last delivering the battle between Scott and Ramona and the insufferable Gideon Graves (“Occupation: asshole”). Throughout the series, O’Malley has proven to be a remarkably clever cartoonist, but his manga-inflected artwork has never looked more accomplished than it does here, with plenty of inventive touches to savor splayed across the multifaceted panel work. The video-game and indie-rock references still play strong, and Scott’s “Memory Cam” is a particularly hilarious new device that nails his winning blend of oblivious charm. Substantively, the book is mostly one extended fight sequence (and a pretty epic one, at that) capped by Scott’s hard-won maturation, with plenty of closure to go around. O’Malley ties up an impressive array of loose ends in the finale to this bighearted series, and few fans will be in any way disappointed, but it’s hard not to look back fondly upon the more shallow, aimlessly myopic Scott Pilgrim of earlier volumes. In any case, an essential addition. Grades 10-12. --Ian Chipman

Thankfully, this one wrapped up everything perfectly, while still maintaining humor and suspense. There are a couple confusing moments, and belief is suspended much more dramatically this time, but the story and heart of the novel are just too good to let that affect anything. I can't say it's my favorite out of the series, but "Finest Hour" is definately one of the best. I had that feeling you get at the end of the series, where you're sad to see it end, but the conclusion lives up to its demands.Bye Scott Pilgrim, we are sad to see you go. Your conclusion has redefined the feeling of "bittersweet" for all of us comic readers. May your film be just as spectacular as your series. Whatever happens next, all of us will still regard Scott Pilgrim as a classic in graphic novel literature.

Different ending than the movie (but not in a good way) By Keith Moser [Copied from my Goodreads review]I must admit, having a graphic novel series in your to read pile makes the annual Reader's Challenge a lot easier! This final novel in the Scott Pilgrim series tied everything up pretty nicely. I was surprised at how different the ending is from the movie. I don't know if I suffered from the First-is-Best phenomenon but I gotta say I loved the screenplay more. It played with the video game motif more and had a more fulfilling ending to the love story/stories (if I'm remembering correctly).I'm a little sad to know that my feelings might have been different had I read the books first (although a quick timeline check shows me that Edgar Wright had written and filmed the film before O'Malley had released Vol 6 originally... I have to assume both talked with each other, shared their ideas for the story, and eventually went their separate ways with the ending...) I guess it's unfair to compare this to Edgar Wright (I often try my best to judge a movie on its own without comparing it to the book, which is usually better) but I still have trouble rooting for such a doofus of a main character. Scott Pilgrim is pathetic and Ramona is basically a self-absorbed bitch. Do they deserve each other? I guess so. But the characters Wright crafted (and the cast portrayed) were so much easier to cheer for (or against in Gideon's case). Here Gideon didn't feel like the Level 7 Super Boss like he was in the film (sorry for the comparison).Overall, I'm glad I read the series. It averaged out to a 4.5, but I'd probably round that down to a 4/5 for its overall execution. Two of the six books had great extras and the coloring looked great, even if it wasn't O'Malley's original vision.

4 of 4 people found the following review helpful. Magnificent book from start to end By Azbull On the back of this book, the author lists 3 categories: action, comedy, and romance. Those 3 categories symbolize exactly my feelings of his book. You will laugh, you will look in awe at some of the spectacle, and you (maybe) will cry. This review shall not only speak for the final installment of this epic series, but for the epici series it is. The simplest way to summarize the plot is this: Scott Pilgrim must fight Ramona's 7 evil exes to win her over. Many twists and turns run all throughout the series, many encounters, allusions, and cameos appear throughout, and if you were born and raised in the videogame era of 1985ish-1996ish, this series will not only appeal greatest to you, but will also invoke the biggest amount of nostalgia in you. Even if you weren't born in that time, but you still enjoy videogames, you will still appreciate and enjoy this series. Even if it's more or less games, the references to music, movies, and locations should still keep you to read. If not, the visual art style is pretty good, and becomes more defined and such in the later installments. As far as uniqueness, it's well drawn manga, but its somewhat easy to recreate and mock. Its great for fanart and such. I think anyone who wants a good read before or after they see the movie, I recommend. If you think mainstream culture could use a firm kick in the trousers, this series may cater to you. If you've read "Lost at Sea" by Bryan Lee O'Malley, expect something different but awesome too.5/5

My kids just discovered snoopy, and my 1 1/2 yr old loves this puppet book. My 2 1/2 yr old is a little bored with it since it doesn't really have a story line or a lot of pages, but was still worth the purchase.

It is best suited for probably age newborn to 18 months, but I didn't see that noted anywhere. The Snoopy finger puppet is cute.

I thoroughly enjoyed this book and would highly recommend it. Well written, the reader is transported into Isa, the main character's world. The author has turned a period in history, which many of us know little about and bought it light heartedly alive through the main characters experiences as her parents embark on their journey to leave Poland and immigrate to America. The story line is not only a good read but an educational one. This book would make a wonderful teaching aid for children to widen their knowledge of life.

A great read and kept me entertained and a must read for children. Some memorable moments highlighted by the author that will remain with me for some years to come. The things that we in America take for granted were treasures in Poland. Great book!

I love reading children stories to my niece and friend's kids. There is something heartwarming and beautiful filled in each page of a children's story. This book was definitely heartwarming from beginning to end. The author Sherri shared a positive story about believing in yourself. Something I think all children struggle with in life. I look forward to reading more stories by Sherri!

It gives a great message that anyone can appreciate. This author has a way with words.... we own both of her books. Highly recommend!

When he comes of age and is forbidden by his father to try out for the King’s Legion, he refuses to take no for an answer: he journeys out on his own, determined to force his way into King’s Court and be taken seriously. But King’s Court is rife with its own family dramas, power struggles, ambitions, jealousy, violence and betrayal. King MacGil must choose an heir from amongst his children, and the ancient Dynasty Sword, the source of all their power, still sits untouched, waiting for the chosen one to arrive. Thorgrin arrives as an outsider and battles to be accepted, and to join the King’s Legion. Thorgrin comes to learn he has mysterious powers he does not understand, that he has a special gift, and a special destiny. Against all odds he falls in love with the king’s daughter, and as their forbidden relationship blossoms, he discovers he has powerful rivals. As he struggles to make sense of his powers, the king’s sorcerer takes him under his wing and tells him of a mother he never knew, in a land far away, beyond the Canyon, beyond even the land of the Dragons. Before Thorgrin can venture out and become the warrior he yearns to be, he must complete his training. But this may be cut short, as he finds himself propelled into the center of royal plots and counterplots, ones that may threaten his love and bring him down—and the entire kingdom with him. With its sophisticated world-building and characterization, A QUEST OF HEROES is an epic tale of friends and lovers, of rivals and suitors, of knights and dragons, of intrigues and political machinations, of coming of age, of broken hearts, of deception, ambition and betrayal. It is a tale of honor and courage, of fate and destiny, of sorcery. It is a fantasy that brings us into a world we will never forget, and which will appeal to all ages and genders. This is the first episode of the graphic novel (24 pages). More episodes to come soon! “[An] entertaining epic fantasy.” —Kirkus Reviews “The beginnings of something remarkable are there.” --San Francisco Book Review “A spirited fantasy ….Only the beginning of what promises to be an epic young adult series.” --Midwest Book Review

Arsenault I FOR one am ONE of those people who have pictures IN my mind from reading the SORCERERS RING series of what each character should look like AND I feel awkward reading a picture BOOK because THE Authors version of Thor AND MY picture of Thor are sooooo different...BUT IT would be great FOR someone WHO has NOT already read the whole series..

Toomer I have read a significant part of the text versions, I think I managed to get to book 5 or 6 before I had to walk away. That said the graphics seem ok, a bit dark on my paper-white, and a little hard to read due to fairly small screen, and less than perfect vision. I can zoom in which makes reading much easier, if more unwieldy as you have to scroll about, but not too bad with the touch screen technology. My rating is for the graphics and not for the story, which can be reviewed on the text editions easy enough on Amazon. My concern is that these graphic books will literally be published chapter to chapter, and we are talking about 17 or so books with many chapters in each book. If Rice uses the same model as the text books you will be paying $3-$4 per chapter, for a story that will get very repetitive, very quickly. On the plus side this gives Rice the opportunity to correct spelling and grammar issues which plagues the authors works across many if not all of the series.

Good Graphic Novel By Jeremy Michael Gallen In the first and only graphic novel inspired by Morgan Rice’s The Sorcerer’s Ring fantasy series, a fourteen-year-old man named Thorgrin yearns to be a warrior. The visual story opens with a map of the series’ world and a Shakespeare quote, with the narrative itself opens with Thorgrin staring at a valley with a sheep by his side, not to mention horse-drawn carriages rolling on a mountain road. The young man runs home to inform his father the Silver are coming, with the men consequentially arming themselves, Thorgrin himself wanting to be part of the legion. However, he’s punished by not being fed and being asked to tend to the sheep, after which he begins to run away. Overall, this is an enjoyable if brief graphic novel, although it apparently hasn’t done well enough to warrant successors, and a list of dramatic personae would have been welcome, but it gives a good visual of what some of the characters look like.

Corrine Castleberry had suffered years of abuse at the hands of her sisters. Unable to tolerate their mistreatment any longer, she walked away from everything—including her children—in search of a better life. Corrine resurfaces years later, with a teenaged daughter in tow and she sets up a private practice, counseling women and men at varying stages of abuse. Brenda, Traci and Shalae are three of her patients. These women are haunted by violence, secrets, and deception. Tramatized by a dramatic event in her life and abuse at the hands of her own mother, Brenda is tormented by the reality she may never be the woman she aspires to be. Traci also suffered years of sexual, physical, and mental abuse brought on by her mother’s drug addiction, but is determined to finish college and make a better life for her and her six-year-old stepsister, Dominique. Shalae was raised to be a strong, independent woman, but falls victim to her abusive, drug-dealing boyfriend, Brian. Corrine takes each woman back to the source of their pain, and soon realizes healing their hearts may not be such a wise idea—especially when the solution means confronting the demons from her own past. Will therapy bring closure, or will the truth destroy them altogether?

By Imperfect Angel Where do I start???Corrine Castelberry's life was filled with sex, lies, and drugs until she met up with the wrong client. He took her goods, left for dead, and only God knew he'd left her with his child. A tragic event ended up being a blessing in disguise. Determined to turn her life around for the sake of her unborn child, Corrine entered rehab and delivered a healthy babygirl. In the meantime, Corrine becomes a counselor but her life remains in neutral due to ghost of her past.In an effort to clear up all thing's evil, Corrine goes back to her hometown to face her demons and help her community. Problem 1,2,3,4, and 5 some people from her past haven't a clue of her true intentions or identity. Others want nothing more than for her to disappear. Corrine just wants to put a Band-Aid over the scars. That is until everything blows up in her face, and she is forced to deal with present and past pain caused by her.I read this book in two days. It was a great story of heartbreak, secrets, mental disorders, and family issues that people face daily but afraid to admit. I hope there is a Part 2 because I want to know Malika's thoughts about her Mother's past.

Whilst some explanations are given to Mila for the recent happenings, Mila finds herself questioning whether she should stay any longer, or just leave and return to her Uncle and Flint. With conflicting stories between Rush, Calix, and what she knew of her parents, she is still no closer to finding out what happened to them. But, wouldn’t her journey be pointless if she returned with nothing? And didn’t she want her independence, and the chance to prove to herself that she could cope alone, to find out for herself? In this instalment a new character emerges in Trent, who talks of a spell on Shade that may be broken. A spell that ensured undesirables did not enter the village. This is some revelation to Mila as she had heard nothing of this spell. Was there a witch in Shade, or had there been? The stories she had heard certainly mentioned a witch – a witch who had ended a war between vampires and werewolves! It also emerges that the village of Shade may be being attacked by vampires. However, Mila finds that this is against what her Uncle had told her. Surely the witch had dealt with the vamps and wolves? But… if that was the case, why then did he pack her off with silver bullets and holy water? Can she really trust her Uncle? Why would he mislead her?Mila has never been more confused. And her emotions are tested a little as she begins to realise that maybe Calix isn’t the annoyance that she thought he was. But can she put her trust in him, Rush or Rea, or all of them collectively? What do those tattooed words on Calix’s back mean? And, just who is the wolf-man in her dreams? Are they just dreams, or are they real?Any reader who loves paranormal, fantasy, romance, mystery and occasional horror will be hooked on Werewolves of Shade. With so many strange happenings, many questions to be answered, high emotions, tension, action and passion these short stories will leave you wanting more. This series is blossoming into a fantastic series that is truly addictive.A copy of Werewolves of Shade #5 was provided by the author in return for a fair and honest review.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. So many questions.... By A Book Vacation Things are starting to get really out of hand in the town of Shade--who to trust and what's real versus what's fantasy have me, and Mila, scratching our heads as this rollercoaster of a story unfolds. But I'm loving it. What I thought I knew has been thwarted by a few intense events that have happened in this specific installment, and I have to admit that at one point I was so confused that I was afraid to continue... but I know O'Rourke will bring it together for me in the end, because he always does, and when I look back at all the crazy that happened in this installment after I finish the 6th and final portion of this amazing serial, I just know it's going to come together like a perfect puzzle.Who are the people of Shade? Where did they come from? What's with the strange writing in the textbooks and on Calix's body? Who was this Julia they speak of, and why is there a werewolf stalking Mila--is there a werewolf stalking Mila? Why aren't the dead in the grave? What of Magic? These are just some of the questions that have arisen for me while I'm reading, and though I know O'Rourke will eventually answer them all for me, the wait is killing me! But the ride makes it so much fun.I love the characters, the bit of sassy romance, the strange, sensual dreams, and trying to decipher fact versus fiction in order to understand the strangeness of the townsfolk in Shade... it's just amazing. Part 6 is going to floor me, I just know it.

3 of 3 people found the following review helpful. A Delightful Addition By Matina's Bookcase Trix Woodcutter never really interested me until now. I was always more interested in the rest of the Woodcutters, Sunday, Saturday, Friday and the others. Reading Trixter has changed all of that. I fell quickly in love with the part fey boy. Even though Trixter is a novella it felt as full as any of Alethea's other books. As the story opens we are introduced to Trix as he is escaping from his family after bewitching their food. We then get to experience the flood that Saturday created from yet another point of view, Trix's. Seeing the same flood from three different points of view could easily grow boring, but Alethea Kontis re-imagines it each time in a new and creative way so that I've never been tired of reading it.We then follow Trix on a wild adventure as he travels to reach his dead mother, spurned on by visions of her. As he makes his way he meets many strange and wonderful creatures and goes through his own tests and trials, growing along the way. This book more than others had a feel of being it's own fairy tale. The others have always incorporated many different fairy tales, but Trix's journey felt like an entirely new one of it's own.Trixter holds the same delight and charm as the other books in the Woodcutter series introducing readers to tales both new and old. It delights and fascinates and embodies Trix's personality to the letter. Both new and old characters are introduced and I hope to see more from many of them in the future. This story holds key plot points to the rest of the series, and I can see that the Woodcutter series is building into something much larger than I'd originally anticipated. This book is definitely not one to be missed. This review and others can be found on matinasbookcase.com

0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. one of the best books I have seen by Alethea Kontis yet By Emily Anne K Trixter begins where Hero and Dearest began, with Trix Woodcutter putting a sleeping potion on his family and running away to save his biological mother. This, of course, was just before Saturday threw her magic mirror out the window and accidentally caused an ocean to flood the countryside. But getting swept up in a magical ocean is only the beginning of the adventures for The Boy Who Talks to Animals.Trixter was, in my opinion, one of the best books I have seen by Alethea Kontis yet. Enchanted rates number one, with Trixter a close second. Trixter was all fun adventure with very few or no instances of the dark, creepy magic that was my only dislike of the series. Instead, the story follow’s Trix on his magical journey, meeting all kinds of strange and wonderful people and creatures—a falling star, a ghostly cat, a three-headed sea monster, and a golden girl are just the beginning.I loved Trix’s character! He never let anything get him down but just took things as they came. He nearly drowns but instead of panicking, he just enjoys the undersea view! It was hilarious!I also liked all the mythical creatures and fairytales woven into the story. Few people have read the fairy tale of the golden girl and the house of cats, but even that bizarre story makes an appearance in this wonderful tale. There are certainly perks to being covered with gold!In all, I would highly recommend this story. Trixter was a light and funny read perfect for teens who love fairy tale retellings.I received a free copy of this book from the author in exchange for an honest review.

A fun companion novella to the Woodcutter Sisters books By Beth Wade You know from my previous reviews of Enchanted, Dearest, and Hero that I'm a Kontis fan. She deftly combines and explores multiple fairytales and folklore stories in the Woodcutter sisters books. Some are stronger than others, but all of them are funny and sweet, and very approachable.I was bummed to learn that her previous publisher dropped contract, so I will never get to read about how Thursday became a Pirate Queen (I need that story, Alethea!). But I'm tickled that she went ahead and self-published this, the first in the tales of younger brother and foundling, Trixter.Trix has been a sprite/Puckish character in the previous three books, which shady origins and an unspecified fated future. His adventures were very briefly hinted at in Hero, as Saturday undergoes her trials. And I have to say, I think I missed most of the fairytale references in here. It's definitely a novella, and only the precursor to the larger tale I'm sure we'll be getting in books two and three. It was a quick, fun read, but I didn't get as into it as I did with the Woodcutter sister books. I think probably because the ending felt so abrupt, like we were missing half the book. For whatever reason, I didn't realize from the book length that this would be more of a teaser than a tale of the same epic length and journey as, say, Dearest. So chalk that up to my bad. But in addition to this, I felt like the lack of a supporting cast of characters made the book feel a bit empty. Trix is an earnest trouble maker and felt absolutely true to what we've seen of him, but he also lacked a driving internal force that might make him feel more near and dear. Again, I think that's something that's going to get established during the trials of book two.If you read any of the Woodcutter sisters books, I recommend picking this one up just to get context with what we've seen in Hero. It's a quick, fun read and will remind you why Arilland is the most fun fairytale theatre there is.
