The witch, who has a thrilling back story that is revealed as this book goes on, and Ina, a seven year old who befriends the witch. Out looking for some cherries to pick, Ina gets lost in the woods and comes upon the witch's cottage which is located in a spot with no color at all. No flowers, no grass, just a plain patch of black, lifeless and lonely. To say that everything changed when these two got together would be an understatement.

While Rybarik does not shy away from describing painful experiences, she does so in a way that leaves the reader uplifted and empowered. The book made me more consciously aware of my own life and the relationships within it. It also caused me to ponder the sort of legacy that I would like to leave behind. As a former bereavement specialist, Rybarik contrasts the experts’ stages of grief to the personal experience of sudden loss. Despite her nurse’s training she is swiftly thrown into the position of a recipient of grief counseling rather than the provider. In her writing, readers find unique answers to common questions following loss: How will he be remembered? Did he make a difference? Does anybody care? For David (and for Fran) the questions are clearly answered through the 10 years of adventures since David’s death, provided by family and friends. Although it is clear, everyone grieves differently, Fran’s heartfelt, honest account of David’s life after death is uplifting and a source of inspiration. As a widow, Rybarik found a life alone can be full despite the rugged path, and for her, achieved through her dogged capacity to reach out and plan for better days.

The only story that might have been worth it was the story of Nick Fury and Dum Dum Dugan. The only positive I have for this book was I received it a week earlier than I expected.

When protagonist Jack drops his favorite action figure down the hole ("Jack was too big to look inside. Guy was willing to go alone"), he first approaches his parents for help. They are busy, so he launches his own, triumphant rescue operation. The tension resolves a bit abruptly, and some children may wish for a greater focus on the toy's-eye-view adventure, an element that figures more prominently in Mini Gray's Traction Man Is Here! (2005). Nevertheless, the strengths here are Crews' vivid portrayal of independent play and her unobtrusive alterations to the photos, some digital and some freehand, that show how fantasy transforms Jack's world. Also irresistible is the generous size of the photos--a reflection of Crews' sense that the small, everyday episodes in children's lives deserve to be writ large. It had my son absolutely mesmerized, and my daughter liked it as well (7 and 9 currently).The story is about Jack, a brown haired, brown eyed charmer, and his toy, Guy. Jack and Guy share all sorts of adventures. Then Guy vanishes down a hole.Jack looked hard, but he couldn't see Guy.Would Guy be okay down there?At first, Jack imagines Guy having further adventures, which is sort of fun, and then Jack imagines Guy being all alone in the dark. :(Jack asks his mom for help but she's busy with his little brother. And then Jack asks his dad for help, but he's fixing a door. Which leaves Jack to rescue his buddy by himself.Wrap-Up:::This book is appealing to children for a number of very good reasons. First, there are the photographs which are oversized, bright and engaging. (They are very much like the one on the front cover.) And I don't know about your children but mine love pictures of other kids, especially if those kids are doing things, like playing like they do.Secondly, there is so much imagination in Jack's play, the magic of which isn't lost on either the author or the photographer. For example, in one episode Guy and Jack are in a big city. In the forefront of the picture there are wood blocks on the stairs and all sorts of little cars-- Jack's constructed cityscape. But muted in the background, ever so subtly, you can make out the image of a real city; what Jack sees with his imagination. I believe children can entirely identify with this.But the big attraction though, is Guy's dilemma and Jack's rescue. Most children have prized possessions, and what better role can children dream up for themselves than that of a rescuer of those treasures. A rescue, without mom and dad, really puts children in the driver's seat. It empowers them and that's why I think Nina Crews' Below so captivated my children.Definitely get this one at the library and give it a test run with your children and see if it wouldn't make a good addition to the home shelves. They play together and have many adventures. One day Guy falls into a hole by accident. Jack imagines what could be happening with Guy down below. Finally, Jack sets up a toy rescue team and saves Guy.This book is illustrated with a mix of photographs, photos on top of photos and drawings. The drawings and faded photos depict Jack's imagination. I like this because you can tell the difference between what is real and what is his imagination.This book has very simple wording and concepts which is perfect for the advertized age range of 3-6 years old. My boys love it because the little boy in the story calls his action figure "Guy"which is what all little boys we know call their action figures. Also, Nina Crews uses her sister's family, a multiracial family, in the book. If you have ever looked for books for children of multicultural or multiracial families, you know how difficult it is to find them. This book doesn't highlight this, but just shows a beautiful family doing everyday things together. A great little boy adventure story.

During the escape, Parker twists the canister open and releases Fon-Rahm, a 3,000-year-old genie. Delighted with his good fortune, Parker, accompanied by Theo and their friend Reese, tortures Fon-Rahm, wishing to drive a Porsche 911 and torment the jocks at school. But soon the trio learn they are caught up in a battle stretching back thousands of years for control of the Jinn. Fon-Rahm's backstory is detailed in the ancient journal entries of Vesiroth, a sorcerer. The journal entries alternate with present action, resulting in a frustratingly disjointed narrative until the two plots unite. However, once the story takes off, it soars along at breakneck speed. The three friends find themselves racing around the globe, accompanied by an ancient sorceress, attempting to prevent the Path from releasing all the Jinn and conquering the world. I usually read a few chapters of the books my wife and I buy for our kids so I have an idea of what they are reading. This book - I read the whole thing. It is nicely written, has a cool, interesting story, and a lot of action. It is just right for the 10-14 year old group. Both of my kids are reading it now, a 10 year old girl and 12 year old boy, and are really enjoying it. As a family we highly recommend it.This is a very good book by these debut authors, and we hope we don't have to wait too long for the next book of the series.

He picked this up and tore through it in days; he loved it. It's definitely on the list for a second read during the summer months. Hope there is a sequel forthcoming!

I'm expecting my 1st great granddaughter soon and I bought this in place of a greeting card because my message will live on with her! I've also bought the companion 1st Communion book for my nephew. If we saw all of their faults, we’d probably never want to have sex with them or take them out in public. We are so good at this that when we love a man we can’t see anything wrong with him. We are completely oblivious to things other people can see. Perhaps that’s what they mean by “love is blind”. We build them up in our minds and sometimes put them on a pedestal and have a sort of hero worship thing going on and once that happens things can get a little weird. At that point sometimes no matter what happens we refuse to see the truth, even if it’s right in front of our eyes. Maybe we see it, but we just don’t want to see it so we just DON’T.

The author's smooth, breezy style indeed complimented the gravity of the topics covered in every chapter. Ms Fox has truthfully exposed all the complicated layers of our interpersonal relationships which we experience throughout our lives. Never preachy, the author simply makes sense of those common issues which become centers of conflict between women and our men. She allows us to believe in ourselves as well as recognizing and avoiding harmful situations. She encourages all women to be strong and to truly value ourselves. I wholeheartedly recommend this book to women and their partners who seek clarity, love, and joy in their lives.

The book specifically addresses relationships between men and women, but most of the advice can be applied to any toxic relationship in your life. I love Chapter 4 where the author explains how we need to change ourselves instead of trying to change 'him'. She explains that when we change our behavior other people HAVE to change how they react to us. Such great advice! The book is good old fashioned advice. It's information that should be reread periodically. We all need a refresher for our relationships now and then! Bravo!

It has a lot of great advice on how to find your dream man and what red flags to look for in your relationship. I like how the author shares her experiences from her past relationships...I found myself relating to a lot of them. She found her dream man, and now I am inspired - there is hope! It was a quick and easy read, and I am recommending it to my friends.

By Pawesome Cats A charming children’s book about a girl and the unconditional bond and love of fashion she shares with her dog.Tuttie is a typical Chinese Pug who is like nothing Laurren has ever seen before. She describes their first meeting beautifully through a child’s eyes – this dog has a weird wrinkly face that made it look like it was a million years old, a face squeezed so tight that its eyes bulged out and a nose that looked like it was smashed by a freight train.Tuttie was left at the vet after a desexing operation when her owner decided he didn’t want her any more. For Tuttie, that was the beginning of a new life with a young girl who became her best friend and constant companion.They quickly became inseparable and their favourite game was playing dress-ups. But I never would have thought of putting lipstick on any of my animals which is what makes this so charming. Loved the story- I could feel her experience. Nice introduction to rescue too.

Surprisingly, they were written in the third person. I thought that was kind of neat for a pick-a-path book. The first story revolves around characters, Joe and Trudy, and the story that they've been told about a girl named Madeline who was murdered in the 1800's. It's said that Madeline's ghost can be seen. But is anyone brave enough to check it out. Joe and Trudy are. And that's just where their adventure begins.Charlie is the protagonist of the second story. His grandfather owns the town's only funeral home and poor Charlie has to live across the street and face the creepy thing every day. Charlie has had to do reports on the towns past criminals including grief-stricken Fanny Folgers who shot her husband and his brothers, and the infamous Don Hodge who shot people for the fun of it. And these were the characters who fueled the ghost stories that involved the funeral parlor. After being antagonized by bullies, Charlie uses the key to the parlor that his grandfather gave him and takes the bullies on a tour.Both adventures are suspenseful and just eerie enough that you might not want to read them right before bed. I especially liked that Charlie lives in Missouri (in Tornado Alley) since I live in Missouri too. Anyway, I recommend this adventure.
