It was a really quick read for me and I really enjoyed it – up until the end. Yes, the ending pissed me off in such a way that I wanted to hurl my Kindle across the room (but I realized I couldn’t live without the thing so I clearly thought better of that idea). It was kind of mindless entertainment…with a message, of course, but I was so blind sighted by the ending of this book that I couldn’t really be happy to have gotten such a message out of it. I’m not going to tell you exactly what happened that spoiled it for me, because that will ruin the book, but I never saw it coming.So our novel begins with Eva falling in love with a boy, Will, who comes to tutoring every Friday. She is helping him write his essay for college applications, and eventually, they fall in love with each other. At the wrong time of course, because Will is moving across the country, from New York to California, to live with his dad. Well, this is terrible news for Eva, but she is determined to find a way to go and visit Will.Then she stumbles across a game show for really smart girls, with the promise of a huge scholarship to a college that Eva’s best friend, Annie, would absolutely love to go to. So Annie auditions for the show, and she makes it. So begins the road trip to L.A., in which Eva will be able to see Will. Sounds like the perfect plan, right? Well, Eva’s mother is very cautious about letting her go pretty much anywhere, because Eva’s father died in a plane crash a few years ago (and this is a huge part of the story). Eventually, they get things all worked out so that the two of them will stay with family along the way (such as her Aunt Janet, who has an unnatural fear of germs and an obsession with the prevention of STD’s). When they get to L.A, things get a little messed up, and we learn that in the end, we have to learn how to be happy with ourselves, and accept who we are, and all that.But, no. Screw that. The ending sucked. It really did. I was expecting it to be this amazingly happy ending with hearts and flowers and rainbow-farting unicorns. And I got none of that, and I’m angry.Also, I felt like there was too much going on in this book at once. Too much background noise, and it got kind of frustrating to keep it all in order. I guess it was just me being bitter about the ending of this book, though.Like I said, it wasn’t a bad book. I enjoyed it up until the very end. I took off one star for the ending, and another because it just wasn’t all that memorable (and I only give 5 stars to books I absolutely loved).Note: I received a copy of this book from the publisher in exchange for an honest review.

Road trips, Romance, and Revolution By SESTORYWOMAN Eva is 16 and she is devouring romance novels as a panacea for her father's death in an airplane crash two years before. Eva's mother refuses to discuss her husband's death to the point that Eva cannot mourn his loss properly. She tells other people that her father died of a heart attack. Her mother and her Aunt Janet have become so overprotective of Eva that she has little personal freedom. She does have a wonderful friend, Annie Kim, to whom she can confide everything she thinks and feels. Enter Will, a gorgeous guy that Eva has long had a crush on. Eva volunteers as a tutor and Will shows up needing a tutor to help him re-write his boring college application essay. Will and Eva develop a strong friendship which evolves into a tentative romance shattered by Will's sudden move to California to live with his father. Eva, sure that Will is her true soulmate for life, schemes to find a way to take a trip to California. She finally discovers a reality TV show offering a $200,000 scholarship to the smartest student winner. She enters Annie and herself as a team and then convinces her mother to let her go on a cross-country bus trip since flying is clearly out of the question. The girls finally receive approval to go but Eva's tiresome Aunt Janet goes with them. When they reach California, Eva learns that life and relationships do not always have the endings one expects. And no, I haven't telegraphed the ending: it was a surprise to me. The writing in this book just sparkled. Eva's heartbreak over her father's death served as background music in her everyday life and her mother's inability to cope with her daughter's needs reminded me that everyone deals with enormous loss as best they can--sometimes with disastrous results. Annie Kim was almost unbelievably understanding at times but she too was a warm, sympathetic character. Will and Eva's budding friendship and romance was based initially on grieving but it becomes more than that for both of them. Margo Rabb's writing flows from one interesting situation to the next. I rooted for Eva and for her mother. And the characters: they were so real that I could see them clearly in my imagination. I had a couple of conversations with Eva in my car. This is easily a book that will consume perceptive teen and adult readers. And it should. It's one of the best books I've read in a long time.

Kissing in America is not your book if you're looking for a summer romance with butterflies and rainbows and a very happily ever after. Kissing in America is Evie's story about believing in love even after she has all the reasons to just give up, to trying to survive to the loss of her father and being the only romantic person left in her house.What I liked about the story was Annie. She's what I like to call a true teenager. She has problems, she falls in love, does impulsive things, talks and dreams about boys, has it's ups and downs with her mother... Like a said, a true teenager. Plus, she has a literary side that I truly loved. Her love for literature made me put post-its all over my ARC to remember where they were.The story starts a bit slow to my liking, but we had to understand Annie's surroundings, her situation and what Will meant to her. So I could pass it up. There are some way funny moments that made me laugh out loud, but the author had the ability to also combine heart-breaking and romantic moments.See an example:I wanted to text my mom: I would shoot myself, but instead I'll go poison myself because Janet would find that a nice sanitary way to die."Let's just say it doesn't look like the most comfortable thing on the planet. Their penises are four feet long.""I'm not planning on having sex with an elephant.""The story was a fantasy, but the feelings were real, I thought as we got back on the bus. That yearning, the sparks, the enormity of love - I felt those exact things with Will.""Grief isn't like a map you can follow. It's not a simple route with a destination. Sometimes you loop back and find yourself in the exact same place you left."Overall, Kissing in America was a good read and it was a different read from all the romance stories I had been reading. Kissing in America was more about healing and discovering that you can survive a break up. That you can learn from your experiences and mistakes and that everything can happen. It was truly an adventure.
