The Journey to Dog Heaven Once it is given, a dog’s love is forever. Bob was a cattle dog, a dingo mix, and his love for Buddy was like that. When Buddy left the ranch—for an important reason but not one any dog could understand—Bob did the only thing a loyal dog is going to do: he followed his master. He followed him across the night prairie, along the white roads and across the vast stretching plains, until finally he reached the town where Buddy’s last scent slipped away on the wind. This is the story of Bob’s journey to locate Buddy, and the courage of both dog and master, each of them doing what he had to do to find his true way. On this journey, Bob comes to a moment of choice that will forever define him. He will take either the hard path that leads to Buddy or the easy one that will fill his starving belly. The road to Dog Heaven is a lot like our own road, full of hardship and danger and temptation. This is the story of one dog’s journey to that heaven.

Ramos This beautiful, deeply affecting novella dances around the predictable and instead focuses on something unique: the inner life of a dog. This isn't Old Yeller or Lassie: no rushing into fires to rescue babies, etc. Bob is a big, ugly beast of a dog who does very mundane dog-things.We get a chapter of setup from the narrator, then the focus shifts to Bob's perspective. At that point, the book seems to open up into a new world. We get some familiar cues from the dialog that the dog hears, but everything is instead presented as a series of sensations and emotions. The story's narrative quickly moves from joy to hunger to fear, etc. The author uses very few words to tell the story, but each sentence feels dense with meaning, and many times the story is told using more sounds or scents than explicit description. This made for quite a fascinating read that is also mind-opening and full of heart.Whitley's writing makes every one of Bob the dog's emotional events feel real. I frequently found myself choking up with emotion as I resonated with whatever the big 'ole dog was feeling at the moment. Most surprisingly, the author's words somehow manage to convey a feeling of pure existence, living in a way where one knows who one is, a part of the universe while still unique. This was both unexpected and truly inspiring. There were several moments of beauty in the text, when you can feel how big the world is, and how precious each life is. Perfect, each one in its own way, flaws and all.The rapid-fire presentation of pure emotion, in all its forms, is a mirror to our experience as human beings, just on a shorter time scale. I guess that's what it is to be an animal. I don't know how the author managed to do this using only words on a page, but it somehow creates an empathy between the reader and the dogs in the book. It even pushes the reader to see things in the real world differently. The fact that this happens while still staying grounded in the real world makes this quite an accomplishment.A believable plot, emotional events full of heart, and a beautifully simple writing style: all of this combines in a magical little book that I can heartily recommend to anyone and everyone. Enjoy!

I should mention that I specifically downloaded the audio book read by the author. If you can, please invest in this auditory treasure. Whitley Strieber so uncannily captures the heart and voice of Bob the cattle dog that you will be blown away. Ah! So THIS is how my dog thinks and feels. What struck me is that, like us humans, Bob is not all "Good Boy." He is a complex creature capable of deep love and joy yet freely concedes his murderous tendencies weakness towards something he is hard-wired to protect. I won't give away the plot. Suffice it to say that if you are looking for Lassie, Rin Tin Tin or Ole Yeller, look elsewhere. I've been owned by two remarkable dogs and this dog comes closest to how I imagined their worlds to be. As for Whitley's reading of the story, I was so surprised and delighted my face hurt from smiling. Not only can this good ole Texas boy write, he can ACT!

Garfield This short, but very cleverly written story from Whitley is a big departure from his usual tomes, and he carries it off with great success. The story's lead character is a cattle dog mix named Bob, who lived on a ranch in the panhandle of Texas. Bob was one of the best herding dogs in the panhandle, and his talent was revered by those who knew him. He had an undying bond to his young adult companion, Buddy. One day, Buddy donned some strange smelling/looking clothes, boarded a bus with others wearing the same strange clothing, and drove away - never to return.Bob's story, told from his point of view, is the on-going search for Buddy, in an effort to re-capture the old days growing up that they both cherished. As the story is told from Bob's point of view, we get to see what a colorful character he is through his speech. There's no denying that Bob is a dog apart; one in a million. The story of a dog seeking that lost 'heaven' with his companion is a short read, but a wonderful story. There are some plot twists that will keep the reader guessing, but one is rewarded with a bittersweet, satisfying feeling at the end. While life often seems to take its own course, there's no denying that love is the most powerful thing after all.

Sure, because it's very simple (actually "simplistic"). Good information? Yes, but woefully insufficient. If you've never read anything about marriage, then it's better than what you've read. If you have, perhaps apart from a new idea on "spicing" your marriage, you'll read nothing new. This is exceptionally short. There's virtually no "Why" given to any suggestion/ advice. If you're looking for real life, practical, 1 stop help, keep going (not worth the free read is what I'm saying). 20 pages of content (maybe) don't warrant such a great title. Very disappointed.

Nil Unlocked (Nil Series), by Lynne Matson

From School Library Journal Gr 9 Up—Rives watches as his close friends Charley and Thad disappear, hopefully to safety. Every teenager deposited unwillingly on the island of Nil needs to catch an unpredictable outbound "gate" (shimmering wall of hot air) within a year of their arrival, or they will die. Now, Rives is Leader and feels the weight of responsibility. Skye's father's obsession with finding Nil started when his twin, Scott, was taken and then died not long after his return. When Skye meets Charley back in the United States and hears Charley's story, she knows Nil is real. Skye and her father travel to the South Pacific, where he suspects the island is located. When Skye irrationally follows a native boy through a gate, she, too, ends up on Nil. Skye and Rives are determined to unlock Nil's secret, lead a mass exodus from the nightmare, and maybe, take down the island altogether. Readers starting with this book will feel a little lost and cheated to have missed Charley and Thad's story in Nil (Holt, 2014). However, Rives and Skye's narratives will ensnare readers quickly. The island setting is akin to William Golding's Lord of the Flies, but the story of teens working together to escape will appeal to fans of James Dashner's The Maze Runner (Delacorte, 2009). VERDICT A must-have for fans of the first installment, but sufficiently interesting enough to draw in new readers.—Kelly Jo Lasher, Middle Township High School, Cape May Court House, NJ

Review PRAISE FOR NIL:A fast, tense gift for readers wanting to return to Nil. (Kirkus Reviews)A must-have for fans of the first installment, but sufficiently interesting enough to draw in new readers. (School Library Journal)What elevates this survival romance is Charley's strong, smart character . . . most readers will be too busy devouring the book in one sitting. (Booklist)*Matson brings a unique twist to a survival story with similarities to the TV reality show Survivor . . . a strongly written fantasty. (VOYA, STARRED REVIEW)The reader is swept along with the characters in just rooting for survival in a setting where taking too long to ponder answers could mean you don't live long enough to do anything with your newfound revelations. (BCCB)The concept of Nil is very interesting and well-constructed . . . Overall, this book hits its mark. (School Library Journal)Matson makes a strong debut with this tense, cinematic struggle for survival on a peril-filled island that may have some readers flashing back to episodes of Lost. (Publishers Weekly)Nil is a page-turner and compulsively readable. Lynne Matson has created a winning story with the perfect mix of edge-of-your-seat suspense, romance, humor. (Mary E. Pearson, author of The Jenna Fox Chronicles)Like Survivor with a body count. Nil is an addicting, fast-paced, thrill of a ride. (Kasie West, author of Pivot Point)Matson's eye for detail and skillful characterizations fuel a fast-pased story that blends beauty, horror, romance and adventure. (Publishers Weekly)

Review for Nil Unlocked by Lynne Matson By Alyssa ***Review posted on The Eater of Books! blog***Nil Unlocked by Lynne MatsonBook Two of the Nil seriesPublisher: Henry Holt and Co. (BYR)Publication Date: May 12, 2015Rating: 4 starsSource: ARC sent by the publisherSummary (from Goodreads):On the island of Nil, the rules are set. You have exactly 365 days to escape—or you die. Rives is now the undisputed Leader of Nil City, but keeping the City united is tougher than ever.Raiders have grown bolder, supplies are dwindling, and non-human inhabitants have taken a turn toward the deadly. Soon the duo find themselves locked in a desperate race to save all the residents of Nil—and possibly destroy the island forever. But at what cost? And who will pay the price? What I Liked:I thought Nil was pretty great... this book was either as good, or better! It's a tie in my head, and that's totally okay because both books were really, really good! Both are very solid, very well-written science fiction/thriller/Lord-of-the-Flies-esque novels. This book is on the longer side, but the story had me by its claws. I couldn't stop reading!Rives has a few months left before he disappears from Nil, lost to known. Charley and Thad caught gates and are (hopefully) made it home (remember, Rives has no way of knowing this, though we as readers now, after the ending of Nil). Meanwhile, we have Skye and her odd father, who are both out searching for Nil. Skye's uncle (her father's brother) was on Nil years ago as a teenager, and returned, haunted by his experience there. Skye's father is convinced that Nil existed. Skye isn't as convinced... until she finds a way into the mysterious island. Now Skye has her own Nil countdown, but she's also armed with knowledge of Nil. Skye, Rives, and the rest of the teenagers on the island don't have long before something immense happens, and it's too late to save themselves.I remember finishing Nil and thinking, that's it? No more? What about all the questions I have? There were soooo many unanswered questions at the end of Nil, and there was no mention of a sequel or a companion, at that point. This book, Nil Unlocked, functions well as a standalone, by the way. The protagonists are not the same protagonists as in Nil, though the protagonists in Nil do appear in this book. So you can read this one without having read Nil. In any case, I read Nil, and I read this one, and a lot of questions I had from Nil were answered in this book. Obviously I'm not going to enumerate what was revealed in this book (that would be involving lots of spoilers), but I will say that I was satisfied with the amount of answers I got from this book. Finally!Rives is one of two protagonists in this book. We get his first-person perspective, and Skye's. I actually didn't have a preference as to who I liked better - I liked them both, and enjoyed reading from both of their perspectives. Usually I'll like one more than the other, but that wasn't the case with this book. Which is great!Getting into Rives' head was an experience. He's weighed down by the role of Leader. He genuinely cares about all of the teenagers in the City, and wants to protect them all. It burdens him more than anyone else when someone is hurt, or dies, or runs out of time. Rives comes across as calculating and quiet, but he is not the unfeeling creature he appears to be. Actually, he doesn't really appear to be unfeeling. Maybe... shut down. Everyone knows he cares so much about everyone, but everyone can also see that he is lonely, and burdened. I like Rives a lot. I can't remember my impression of him in Nil, but I thought he was pretty great in this book. He's very careful, very observant, very protective, very selfless.Skye is flame to his ice. She is impulsive - she goes with her strange, half-crazy astrophysicist father to find some mysterious island that doesn't exist. Or does it? When they arrive at an island in the ocean, she does some investigating of her own... and follows a boy through a gate, to Nil. She and the boy are now on Nil, with their own Nil countdowns. But the boy knows much more than he's telling her, and that includes a wealth information about Nil, and how to leave.I liked Skye! She is calm and rational (most of the time), but also impulsive and fierce. Her father always thought Nil was real (because of his brother), and he had Skye train and prepare and learn random survival because of his fear of Nil. As it would turn out, those skills came in handy. Skye is a fighter, and she is very smart. We get to know a lot more about Nil's history, and why it is exists. We find out how it came about, its purpose, and much more about the "rules" of Nil. There is a sciencey aspect to some of the explanations, which is cool. There are other more strange aspects too. I can't say much without giving anything away, so I'll leave it at that. I'm so glad I read this novel, because it gave me the answers I needed! And it was a really good book. The story never ceased to be interesting, and the pages started to fly by as I kept reading. There was a serious creepy factor to this book - there were times when the story seemed chilling and a bit scary. Of course, I'm terrified of even the slightest "scary" thing - I hate scary movies and horror fiction and all that jazz. There were some points in this book when I was slightly terrified. But this is a good thing! Notice I'm not putting this comment in the "dislikes" section below. There IS romance! And it is a semi important part of this book, though not the whole plot of the story. Rives and Skye fall for each other slowly and subtly, and it takes about seventy-five percent of the book for either of them to really recognize their feelings. Or maybe a little less than that. Either way, the romance in this book is really sweet. Rives needed someone like Skye, and I'm really glad he could have someone with him on Nil, until the end.The end... what an end. I'm thinking there has to be a third book to this series? I think I remember the author telling me that she was working on one. I think it was Lynne. The ending of this book is satisfying in most ways, but there is definitely room for a third novel. Like, the ending silently screams for one! Not necessarily a cliffhanger, because this book ends well, but I would be highly interested in seeing a third book in this series! What I Did Not Like:I can't thinking of anything at the moment... Lynne Matson is AMAZING. Her writing, storytelling, world building, etc. is excellent!Would I Recommend It:YES! I recommend this book - or series in general. Remember what I said, this book can be read as a standalone! The series seems to be a companion series of a sort. Different protagonists in each book. Which makes me curious as to who the third book will feature... I have an idea of the male. Anyway. I like this series! Science fiction, thriller, survival story, whatever you want to call it, I like it!Rating:4 stars. Nil and this book actually aren't my typical reads - I'm not a fan of survival stories - but I'm glad I gave the series a shot last year, when I won a giveaway for an ARC of Nil. I love how that worked out! Now, book three!

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. If you like LOST, then you need to read this series! By Brittany When I first read NIL last year, I was so pleasantly surprised! I went into the book not knowing what to expect and I ended up really, really enjoying it. It was an interesting kind of science-fiction, focusing more on what sort of phenomena may occur in nature and take the world by surprise instead of a man-made or manipulated experiment. The island of Nil really comes alive in book two (no, really. It's kind of alive) and it added yet another enjoyable layer to this series!NIL UNLOCKED is told from alternating point-of-views: Rives, a "Nil survivor" who the readers met in book one, and Skye, a girl whose uncle had survived Nil and whose father is obsessed with finding the island. I did find myself missing the two main characters from the previous book, Charley and Thad, at the very beginning but the book quickly swept me away and I was anxious to see what other mysteries Nil had in store. I think my only regret is that I wasn't able to read these two closer together because I had a hard time remember a lot about Rives and the other kids on the island because I was SO focused on Charley and Thad in the first book. That being said, I really did appreciate getting to know Rives as a main character in this book. I really enjoyed his personal ties to the island (they seemed much more personal than Charley's and Thad's) as well as watching him grow into his new leadership position. Then we get to know Skye who is the other half of the story and she was quite the fireball and a great balance for Rives. Their interactions really kept the story moving and they kept each other alert and hungry for answers. But my favorite new character may be the island of Nil itself. NIL introduced us to the mysteries that may dwell beneath the surface but NIL UNLOCKED really allowed the characters and the readers to explore the deeper secrets. The island of Nil started to really come alive and it was so fun to see the way it shaped the book. When done well, I really enjoy when a setting sort of takes on the role of a character and NIL UNLOCKED really nailed it!I actually didn't know that there was a third book going into my read of NIL UNLOCKED... and I actually didn't realize when I finished it either. I'm not quite sure if I'd categorize this as a series since the plot does continue from book one to book two or companions since the main characters are different but any which way you slice it, the two books out so far really do stand well on their own (though I still advise to read them in order). It's refreshing to have the feeling that the story can continue and yet the reader isn't left with gaping holes or giant cliffhangers. There's always more to explore when it comes to Nil but so far these two books wrap up nicely! If you're a sci-fi fan (and I won't tire of saying it... especially if you're a fan of LOST), you need to check out these books! It was really refreshing to read this corner of science-fiction with more of nature-focus than futuristic and gadgety. There's so much happening in this book that the feel ranges from sci-fi to thriller to mystery and there's even a bit of romance. I really enjoy this series so far and I hope others will keep on picking it up!

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Full of adventure, kickassery, and a wee bit of romance By Nose In A Book So super excited. I loved NIL - something about island books, I've been on a run of great ones and NIL was no exception. So I jumped at the chance to go back to this crazy place.Matson has done a great job with the follow-up to the story. It's all of the same crazy island shenanigans and a few of the same players, but we're introduced to Skye, the daughter of an astrophysicist obsessed with uncovering the secret island his brother disappeared to and returned from as a teenager. Skye atfirst thinks her father is a bit cracked, but then she reads her Uncle Scott's journal and starts to buy into the story. So when her dad takes off for Micronesia to seek NIL out, Skye insists on traveling with him. This follow up is also dual POV following Skye's story and new leader of the City, Rives' story, but what I loved is we get to know the island itself in this book. NIL was certainly setting as character in book 1, but in NIL Unlocked, there's no denying that the island is firmly a character as much as Rives, Skye, and all of the others.Leopards, Hyenas, Lions, a Tiger who will surprise you - NIL still holds danger, but this time it also holds the keys to its heart and the balance it so desperately seeks. And the ending was perfect for me.This is a story that grows as the pages turn, can be read without reading the first (though probably you'll get more out of it if you've read both), is full of adventure, kickassery, and a wee bit of romance. Also, lots and lots of fish wraps. A great escape of a read!

Simon O'Toole, once a middle-aged IT specialist, now a young wizard, is at war. Four years have passed since the Earth was laid waste by the return of the dark gods and the dragons that serve them. After world-wide devastation, only a handful of humans, Changed by magic, are clinging to existence. And the dragons are still hunting them. All humans are now imbued with magic, but the only wizard who can command the elements and strike back at the monsters is Simon. Using his new powers, he discovers a small group of Changlings living in Moscow, led by a paladin named Liliana. Hoping for an ally in his war against the darkness, the wizard teleports to the ruined city to meet this holy warrior, only to come under attack...by a white dragon. Was it a setup? Or have more humans fallen beneath the fangs and claws of this scourge? On the run across a frozen landscape and fighting for his life, Simon intends to find out. If he survives.

The characters all very flat and seem to follow a strict adherence to D&D class archetypes. None of them seem to carry any close personal relationships. They're friendly, but never anything deeper. The main character is still flat out stupid; I don't mean the concept of the character, but the character himself. He's supposed to be a powerful wizard, an archetype that's defined by their intelligence and wily nature, but Simon is dumb as a post. Then there's the fact that he has never even THOUGHT to make his own magic items. In the first book we're told he has experimented with imbuing some items with fire as a defense mechanism. He hasn't thought to do such things with his Steelskin and Shield spells? He hasn't attempting to imbue a mirror with Magic Mirror? We were told in one of the previous books that a child was born that has mismatched eyes like himself. IIRC, the wizard he faced off with in book 2 also had heterochromia. It would stand to reason that heterochromia might be a sign a person is a wizard and that he would spend some time around this child to find its potential. The disbelief attitude exhibited by Simon is getting REALLY old hat.****SLIGHT SPOILER *****A couple of characters get infected with lycanthropy and he responds by saying something like: "Well that's just silly." Really? He's a wizard that can cast spells, has summoned elementals, has unicorn, has slain quite a few dragons, etc, but werewolves are "silly?"

By Kenneth This story has some great ideas and OK writing but the characters are too flat and make too many basic mistakes for me to continue caring about them. First and foremost, if the main character is an elementist wizard, or whatever, then why does he only summon elementals from two of the four elements available? The most likely answer is that the author didn't want to deal with the added characters and complexity. My main complaint with this series is that I feel the authors hand too often. Main character needs to be more powerful so suddenly he is more powerful. Main character is too powerful so author ex machina again and some of the power goes away.

Simon's target this time is the White Primal Dragon, a dragon considerably more powerful than any before. Obviously the dragon dies but the trials and tribulations Simon goes through are what makes the death more exciting. Two new elementals emerged to assist Simon but one betrays his trust. Simon's influence is spreading and his reputation growing. All told with clarity, often tongue in cheek, but mostly just plain I old good story telling.
