The Journey to Dog Heaven Once it is given, a dog’s love is forever. Bob was a cattle dog, a dingo mix, and his love for Buddy was like that. When Buddy left the ranch—for an important reason but not one any dog could understand—Bob did the only thing a loyal dog is going to do: he followed his master. He followed him across the night prairie, along the white roads and across the vast stretching plains, until finally he reached the town where Buddy’s last scent slipped away on the wind. This is the story of Bob’s journey to locate Buddy, and the courage of both dog and master, each of them doing what he had to do to find his true way. On this journey, Bob comes to a moment of choice that will forever define him. He will take either the hard path that leads to Buddy or the easy one that will fill his starving belly. The road to Dog Heaven is a lot like our own road, full of hardship and danger and temptation. This is the story of one dog’s journey to that heaven.

Ramos This beautiful, deeply affecting novella dances around the predictable and instead focuses on something unique: the inner life of a dog. This isn't Old Yeller or Lassie: no rushing into fires to rescue babies, etc. Bob is a big, ugly beast of a dog who does very mundane dog-things.We get a chapter of setup from the narrator, then the focus shifts to Bob's perspective. At that point, the book seems to open up into a new world. We get some familiar cues from the dialog that the dog hears, but everything is instead presented as a series of sensations and emotions. The story's narrative quickly moves from joy to hunger to fear, etc. The author uses very few words to tell the story, but each sentence feels dense with meaning, and many times the story is told using more sounds or scents than explicit description. This made for quite a fascinating read that is also mind-opening and full of heart.Whitley's writing makes every one of Bob the dog's emotional events feel real. I frequently found myself choking up with emotion as I resonated with whatever the big 'ole dog was feeling at the moment. Most surprisingly, the author's words somehow manage to convey a feeling of pure existence, living in a way where one knows who one is, a part of the universe while still unique. This was both unexpected and truly inspiring. There were several moments of beauty in the text, when you can feel how big the world is, and how precious each life is. Perfect, each one in its own way, flaws and all.The rapid-fire presentation of pure emotion, in all its forms, is a mirror to our experience as human beings, just on a shorter time scale. I guess that's what it is to be an animal. I don't know how the author managed to do this using only words on a page, but it somehow creates an empathy between the reader and the dogs in the book. It even pushes the reader to see things in the real world differently. The fact that this happens while still staying grounded in the real world makes this quite an accomplishment.A believable plot, emotional events full of heart, and a beautifully simple writing style: all of this combines in a magical little book that I can heartily recommend to anyone and everyone. Enjoy!

I should mention that I specifically downloaded the audio book read by the author. If you can, please invest in this auditory treasure. Whitley Strieber so uncannily captures the heart and voice of Bob the cattle dog that you will be blown away. Ah! So THIS is how my dog thinks and feels. What struck me is that, like us humans, Bob is not all "Good Boy." He is a complex creature capable of deep love and joy yet freely concedes his murderous tendencies weakness towards something he is hard-wired to protect. I won't give away the plot. Suffice it to say that if you are looking for Lassie, Rin Tin Tin or Ole Yeller, look elsewhere. I've been owned by two remarkable dogs and this dog comes closest to how I imagined their worlds to be. As for Whitley's reading of the story, I was so surprised and delighted my face hurt from smiling. Not only can this good ole Texas boy write, he can ACT!

Garfield This short, but very cleverly written story from Whitley is a big departure from his usual tomes, and he carries it off with great success. The story's lead character is a cattle dog mix named Bob, who lived on a ranch in the panhandle of Texas. Bob was one of the best herding dogs in the panhandle, and his talent was revered by those who knew him. He had an undying bond to his young adult companion, Buddy. One day, Buddy donned some strange smelling/looking clothes, boarded a bus with others wearing the same strange clothing, and drove away - never to return.Bob's story, told from his point of view, is the on-going search for Buddy, in an effort to re-capture the old days growing up that they both cherished. As the story is told from Bob's point of view, we get to see what a colorful character he is through his speech. There's no denying that Bob is a dog apart; one in a million. The story of a dog seeking that lost 'heaven' with his companion is a short read, but a wonderful story. There are some plot twists that will keep the reader guessing, but one is rewarded with a bittersweet, satisfying feeling at the end. While life often seems to take its own course, there's no denying that love is the most powerful thing after all.
