By Steve McSheffrey I bought this right away but put off reading it when I read the synopsis afterward (Corwin's Overworld books are buy on sight for me!) and saw it wasn't a sequel to the other Overworld series. Was I disappointed when I finally read i t? Not one bit! The trio of main characters are delightful and real and the villains and other obstacles are all well done. This is a book where people do magic but there's no cheating the story with miracles. I'm now officially jonesing for anotehr Conrad book as hard as I am for the main series!

By Mu I was torn on this one, the book deserves 5 stars judged on its own merit, but it clearly needs to be marked as YA. Where the Overworld Chronicles are PG-13 and the OW Underworld R+, this is Harry Potter level. Definitely going to give the series a try, but it does take some getting used to.

I really enjoyed the authors other books but this one just didn't do it for me. SPOILER ALERT!!I felt that the main character could have been thought out a little better. How are you able to work spells with no magical talent? There are a lot of loose ends, such as his parents and now the curse is no longer a problem that killed so many??? His companions are not much better. Not sure if I would buy the second book as I am really let down. The only reason I left 3 stars is I felt the story was going somewhere and is maybe leading up to a longer story that will wow us as his previous 10 book series.
