1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. and makes good use of them By W. Volterman Got this product for a 5 (now 6) year old firl who is really into fashion design. She has several other books, some stencil, some sticker, some other, and makes good use of them. I recently found she's almost used this completely up and has had nothing but high praise for this item, so I'm ordering another for her since she can mix and match. Fans of fashion and Monster High will love this provided they are into these kinds of things definitely worth buying at least one.

It also has PLENTY of stickers, so if you mess up - you don't worry about running out. It also has 2 sets of each sticker (so if kids are sharing, they don't have to worry if they want to use the same ones!) Definitely recommend and will definitely buy again! Thanks.

This is the story of the adventure of a little boy named Sheldon and his dog, Jet. When Sheldon’s best friend moves away, Sheldon spies the word “Jupiter” painted on the side of the moving truck. Sheldon feels sad at first, but realizes that this is a sign—what he needs is a rocket ship! So Sheldon and Jet do some sketching and some scrounging, and, with a wagon full of equipment and supplies, the two future astronauts head to the backyard. With a glop and a wham, piece by piece the ship begins to take form, and soon it’s Commander Sheldon A. Flyer and Space Cadet Jet ready for takeoff! The duo jets around satellites, zooms by planets, speeds through space storms, and zips past other flying saucers . . . until plop, they’ve arrived, somewhere with a green, alien life-form and a furry black blob. This book encourages children to channel loneliness and boredom with creativity and imagination, and ultimately it is a story of new friendship. Featuring vibrant illustrations by debut author and illustrator Russ Cox, this action-packed story is sure to appeal to young readers in search of something that is out of this world!Sky Pony Press, with our Good Books, Racehorse and Arcade imprints, is proud to publish a broad range of books for young readers—picture books for small children, chapter books, books for middle grade readers, and novels for young adults. Our list includes bestsellers for children who love to play Minecraft; stories told with LEGO bricks; books that teach lessons about tolerance, patience, and the environment, and much more. While not every title we publish becomes a New York Times bestseller or a national bestseller, we are committed to books on subjects that are sometimes overlooked and to authors whose work might not otherwise find a home.

From School Library Journal K-Gr 2—Sheldon's friend has just moved to "Jupiter," which means there is only one thing to do…build a rocket to travel there. When he and his expressive dog Jet blast off, their imaginations soar through a boy's dream version of space. Fortunately, their rocket breaks down, bringing them back to reality in time to make a discovery: a new life-form. Cox's combination of full spreads and panels gives him enough room to provide specifics about the ship's construction, this pair's adventure, and their introduction to the new neighbor. Fun illustrations quickly turn the downbeat opener into a full-blown, colorful adventure, with sound effects. For children, anyone not "here," might as well be on another planet; the moving trucks are a visual manifestation of this fear. Instead of optimistically proclaiming "of course you'll remain in touch," Cox delivers a more honest answer; you may not. VERDICT This engaging picture book explains that sometimes friends leave but there is always a new one around the corner.—Rachel Forbes, Oakville Public Library, Ontario, Canada

Imagination conquers all By Teresa Robeson How does one take away the sadness of losing a good neighbor friend and ease the trepidation of making friends with the new neighbor? This wonderfully illustrated book perfectly captures those feelings and shows how one imaginative child eases through the transition. I love Russ Cox's beautiful illustrations and delightful story! I just wish I had it when I was a kid myself.

By Brooke Bumgardner Faraway Friends by Russ Cox is a wonderfully illustrated children's book that tells a fun story of friendship. When Sheldon's friend moves, he is convinced his friend moved to Jupiter. He enlists the help of his dog, Jet, to build a rocket ship so they can go see his friend. This was a really cute story! My three and a half year old daughter, who loves 'alien buddies', was excited to take a trip to outer space with Sheldon and Jet. We both enjoyed the fantastic illustrations. I liked that the story really teaches important friendship and life lessons. Faraway Friends by Russ Cox has great imagination and a really fun story that is great for younger kids.I received a copy from the publisher for review purposes, but this did not influence my opinion.

The illustrations were perfect and really pulled in my super observant four year old. The entire time I’m reading a page, he looks at every detail no matter how small. This story shows childhood at it’s finest combining friendship and imaginative play. My boys and their dog go on adventures similar to this daily.**I was sent this product in exchange for a honest review. The opinions above are my own.**

By Agy Wilson Baby Bear awakes to a warm gold-covered spring day and the sniffles. He's allergic to pollen and hates it! But as the vole, mama bear, zebra butterfly, spiderling and other forest creatures explain how pollen works and why it's important, Baby's irritation turns to understanding.Bersani explains a complex subject straightforwardly and accompanies it with magical illustrations. All of the creatures are clear and beautifully realized. This isn't only a book for explaining the way flowers and animals work together to sustain each other. There's also a wonderful section with activities for children guided by adults on flower parts, what allergies are, the pollination process, and the importance of bees as pollinators, and what kids can do to help them along. The author/illustrator has paintstakingly vetted the book with expert input, and combined it kid-friendly devices like alliteration and onomatopoeia. A wonderful resource that beautifully encourages children to care for the world around them, and casts participating adults in the expert role with the help and resources of this well sourced book.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. This is a fun, fascinating book that will teach young children about pollen and why we need it ... By Deb Baby Bear's eyes looked swollen and itchy and he came out of his den. Rub, rub, rub! Even his little nose ran and his eyes watered from all the pollen in the air. "Achoo! Achoo!" The pollen was everywhere and "a coat of yellow dust covered the forest outside his home." Baby Bear rolled in the clover with his toes up in the air, but that yucky yellow pollen stuck to his coat. Even Valerie Vole began to sneeze when she came out of her burrow. "Achoo! Achoo!," what to do?Rubbing up against tree bark was a great way to get rid of some of that yucky pollen. "It's messy. It's itchy, " Baby Bear exclaimed. "It makers me--ah, ah, a-choo--sneeze!" He wasn't crazy about pollen at all, but his mother cuddled him and began to tell him just how useful it was. Many of the forest plants and animals needed It to survive. Some would eat it while insects like bees pollinated plants as they moved from plant to plant. Bzzzzzz! Not all of the pollen out there would make Baby Bear sneeze and feel yucky.Momma Bear told him about how Sandy Spiderling caught pollen in his web to eat it and how Zoe Zebra Butterfly used her long proboscis to get herself a "tasty meal." Baby Bear was very interested in those honeybees and Honey Bee told him all about pollen collection, beebread, and nectar. "Achoo! Achoo!" There were certainly a lot of things to learn about pollen and why the creatures of the fields and forest need it. Did you know that even wolves can use pollen? If not, you'll learn all about it in this book! This is a fun, fascinating book that will teach young children about pollen and why we need it. Of course many children who are allergic to some forms of pollen might not find it useful, but will adore Baby Bear. He sneezes here and there throughout this highly informative book, one that makes it easy for children to understand the pollination process. The artwork is fun, vibrant and the picture book format makes it easy for even the most reluctant reader to learn some very interesting facts. In addition to the four pages of activities, there are free complementary activities on the publisher's website. This is an excellent read and discuss book for students in the homeschool or classroom setting.Accelerated Reader: 3.3Flesch-Kincaid: 3.2Lexile: 670LFountas and Pinnell: NThis book courtesy of the publisher.

Why Pollen CountsAuthor/Illustrator: Shennen BersaniPublisher: Arbordale PublishingISBN: 978-1-62855-5592“It’s messy. It’s itchy. It makes me – ah, ah, a-choo – sneeze! I wish there was no such thing as pollen,” Baby Bear declares in Shennen Bersani’s children’s book, Achoo! Why Pollen Counts. At thirty-two unnumbered pages, this over-sized paperback with thick folding jacket covers targets children ages four to eight years old who enjoy educational stories about nature. With no scary scenes or profanity, it may be best read out loud by adults to beginner readers due to some complicated wording. In this charming and enlightening story, Baby Bear comes out of his den after hibernating all winter and gets covered with pollen. Rolling around in the spring grass, he gets watery eyes, a runny nose, and itchy fur. Realizing he is allergic to pollen, the bear wishes there was no such thing as it.Momma Bear explains that the forest needs the special dust as some animals eat it while others help pollinate plants with it. A springtime spider, a butterfly and bee during the summer, a fall harvest ladybug, and a winter owl inform the bear that pollen is needed during each season of the year. Although still allergic, Baby Bear changes his mind when he understands he eats pollen too; he comprehends how important it is to the world. The last four pages have more educational tools of learning activities for creative minds that involves understanding allergies, flower parts with pictures, the pollination process, a matching puzzle of animals and insects to particular flowers, and information on bees being excellent pollinators. Numbered suggestions are offered on how to help honeybees survive. What makes this book fun is not only the beautiful, detailed illustrations and a cute storyline that teaches about allergies, but also the informational data at the back of the book for older readers. Any child will love viewing the animals and insects to the floating pollen as they learn how vital this fine powder is to our planet throughout the four seasons.Award-winning children’s book illustrator, author Bersani obviously loves nature and life lessons for children of all ages. Having illustrated many books with her detailed, realistic designs, the Massachusetts artist has produced her first written picture book. Thanks to Arbordale Publishing and Bookpleasures for furnishing this complimentary book in exchange for a review of the reader’s honest opinion.

Petlandia, by Peter Hannan

From School Library Journal Gr 2–5—The Finkleblurts have a new pet pup, Grub, and their cat, Madame Wigglesworth, is not amused. As irritated as Madame Wigglesworth is with Grub, she "hates" the humans "ten times more." She plots revenge and unites the family's pets establishing a new country: Petlandia. She writes a Petlandia Declaration of Independence, Constitution, and a national anthem. She would like to serve as queen, but establishes the country as a democracy where the pets will vote for their new president. Madame Wigglesworth can't believe it when Grub is voted to be Petlandia's president. Now Madame Wigglesworth has a bigger problem: How can she become the next Petlandia president? Cat and dog owners will see their own pets in the stereotypical personalities of Grub and Wigglesworth. The story is silly, goofy, and altogether a riot, but there are genuine lessons to be learned about getting along with others and the the qualities of an excellent leader embedded amid the wackadoodle plot. The story might even prompt a discussion about bullying behavior. VERDICT Told with classic cartoon, fast-paced silliness and drawings, this title is bound to capture the attention of even the most reluctant reader.—Helen Foster James, University of California at San Diego

Review Praise for MY BIG MOUTH:"Hannan's edgy, exaggerated style suits the humor-driven narrative."- School Library Journal"...very appealing to fans of Diary of a Wimpy Kid."- Statesman Journal"Hannan delivers the requisite giggles...."- Horn Book

By Young Mensan BookParade If you are a fan of Nickelodeon you would find 'Petlandia' an amusing read for a lazy summer afternoon. If you are a college literature professor you would have hard time giving the author any credit.Written by Peter Hannan, the creator of Nickelodeon animation series called 'A Cat and a Dog', the book, Petlandia, requires childlike imagination and light-hearted approach to visualize the chaotic plot into animation strips. If you have suchability you will laugh your heart out as wicked Madame Wiggleworth convinces royal Grub to join her revolution to kickthe humans out of the house and to declare the independence of the animal nation, Petlandia.Who is going to be the leader of the new nation? Would the pets' lives be better without humans? Would they live happilyever after? What would happen to poor humans? My favorite part of the book is the vivid personification of the animals with cleverly animated characters; the brightyet wicked Wiggleworth, the cat; the royal and friendly average-Joe Grub, the dog; the crooked and greedy Mr. Ugly, the rat; the sweet yet wish-wash Honeybaked, the mouse; and the quiet and astute Clowny, the fish. They represent theslice of human society. One elementary teacher gave the book high rating, but I disagree. While the depth and story line of the book are more properfor young readers in elementary lower grades, the intentional grammatical errors in Grub's dialogue can be quite confusing to them.Mature readers in elementary upper grades will get the joke, but find the plot quite childish and shallow. Children in betweenage 5 and 8 would mostly enjoy this book. However, I would recommend adult's supervision to clarify grammatical and spelling errorsintentionally used to build Grub's character. For failing to define target audience, I could only give 3 star to Petlandia. However, if you are young at heart and goofy in natureyou may enjoy this book regardless of your age. Are you ready to giggle and laugh?Isabella S, age 10, San Francisco Mensa

By Janet Hamilton Summary: Madame Wigglesworth has always had a certain feline disdain for the humans she lives with, but they treat her worshipfully enough that she puts up with them. Then Grub arrives. Grub slobbers, eats Madame’s crown, and wants his belly rubbed…endlessly. Madame Wigglesworth decides it’s time to take matters into her own hands. She convinces Grub and his sidekick Honeybaked Hamster that the humans no longer love them and should be kicked out of the house. The animals manage to drag the humans out of the house while they’re sleeping, then take over. Madame declares Petlandia a democracy, and bedlam ensues cat and dog vie to become president. The house is combed for potential voters, including bats, rats, and fleas. Can Petlandia survive political warfare?Pros: Liberally illustrated with cartoon animals, this is sure to be a hit for fans of Bad Kitty and the like. Even reluctant readers will find the combination of humor and action irresistible.Cons: My inner eight-year-old gave out around page 70, and it was tough going for me to make it through the back-and-forth presidential bickering. Actual eight-year-olds, though, will undoubtedly have no issue with this.

The illustrations are cartoony and complement the hilarity. I will be sure to recommend this to all my students.

Carole P. Roman's award winning series has traveling again and this time it's to East Asia to visit the People's Republic of China. In this book, younger readers can learn about the wide variety of climate when they read about China's vast size. They will begin their journey in China's ancient capital, Beijing, where they will discover the Imperial Palace of the Forbidden City. Different regions of cuisine are discussed, highlighting the variety of styles and spices of food. Currency, sports, exciting tourist attractions, and a lovely description of the New Year Festivities are included in this introduction the beautiful land of China. Embraced by educators, parents, and children, the series gently and respectfully introduces the subjects of cultures and customs around the world. On "If You Were Me and Lived in...South Korea": "Roman has proven her skill at writing children's books with her Captain No Beard series, as well as with the other volumes in her cultural series. If you were me and lived in ...South Korea uses a technique of speaking directly to the child reading or listening, similar to Laura Numeroff's If You Give a...series. This strategy is well suited to a book about foreign cultures as it gives little imaginations a boost by helping children envision themselves growing up with customs and traditions different from the ones they're familiar with..." Peter Dabbene ForeWord Reviews Clarion Review On "If You Were Me and Lived in...France": "It is the simplistic and positive way that Roman,a former social studies teacher, delivers the text, that makes this series appealing-the books are short and to the point and just what you want when you're introducing geography and culture to the youngest reading set." Bianca Schulz-The Children's Book review. "It is vital vital that we continue to embrace culture and learn about the history of our world neighbors. Carole P. Roman has developed a series of cultural books designed to help parents and educator take the first steps in engaging our children in a fun way of embracing other cultures." Storytellers Campfire.

Review "This is an essential entry in the series, and a valuable window into China for young readers...Carole P. Roman's formula for explaining the basics of other cultures around the world proves successful once again, as she focuses on the populous and still somewhat mysterious country of China in her picture book...The book's range of information, the simplicity and appeal of its presentation, and Roman's unique ability to help small children imagine life in a different part of the world combine to make If You Were Me and Lived In...China an essential entry in the series, and a valuable window into a major culture." -- Peter Dabbene, Foreword Review"Young readers can use the picture book to travel to China and learn about everyday life and culture from the point of view of a child who lives there...This winning overview of Chinese life offers kids a good introduction to life in another country."KIRKUS REVIEWS

It is a quick and fun look at many parts of children’s lives in China. We learn about a few different things from food to language and many things in between. It’s easy to understand and is an easy way to open up discussions about the culture and the people of China. As the title of the book states this book is an introduction to another culture, so it is only a glimpse into the Chinese world. It shows how children can be the same yet different all around the world. It gives facts about the country itself as well as the people and even includes a pronunciation guide. With easy and fun dialogue this book entertains and educates at the same time. This little book is packed full of information for readers. It was nice to see a pronunciation guide so that readers do not feel intimidated and can truly see how the actual words sound.I like the way the book interacts with the reader. It teaches you and asks you quick little questions here and there to make it interesting for the younger readers. If You Were Me and Lived in China is a good book to share the Chinese culture. We are Asian and this book is an easy way to show other children what our lives are like it answers many questions some children have. Whether you are young or old you should enjoy this book.originally posted at long and short reviews

By Dalai Momma Along with the book Captain No Beard: An Imaginary Tale of a Pirate's LifeI also received a copy of If You Were Me and Lived in...China: A Child's Introduction to Culture Around the World Something very much different from the first book but still a great read for kids.Just as in the first book I figured what better way to give an honest review on a childrens book than to go over it with my kids to see how this story holds up. I will say this book is better suited for children a little older simply because there is a lot of wording...and with a lot of wording comes the chance that little minds lose interest right away. My 7 year old held on to the end...my 4 year old walked away..came back..walked away. Still I have to say between my 7 year old and myself we really enjoyed the book. Great illustrations..vivid colors..adorable..by Kelsea Wierenga. It's like a travel book for children. Giving the child an opportunity to learn about a culture..places to visit...dialect..foods to eat...it was fun and informative. A really great idea to teach kids something so wonderful as a new place in the world that they may have never been.Again, I think this type of book is centered maybe more for older kids past the age of 7 just because there is such rich information that smaller children's attention spans won't grasp. But still my 4 year old still loved looking at the pictures with us and we have had a good laugh the day he called his father "Ba-Ba" (Chinese word for Daddy)..so you see, at his age he learned something from this book...WIN WIN for Mommy...or rather "Maa-Ma"I received my free copy of the book thanks to the peeps at The Children's Book Reviews and to Carole P. Roman in exchange for an honest review.

Roman is a very good book collection for teaching some basics about other countries to young learners. The books are good starting points for learning about foreign cultures and customs. The books are tailored to children 3 to 8 years old, and contain interesting facts about the countries and colorful illustrations. The books are all in the 20-25 page range and contain a pronunciation guide on the last page. We were provided review volumes and my wife uses them in her preschool classroom to introduce other cultures and customs to the students. This China edition teaches about the country, Beijing, names, money, the Great Wall, the clay army, food, ping pong, the New Year festival, a pronunciation guide, and more. These are fun educational books for young learners. My wife really likes them for her preschool kids.
