From School Library Journal Gr 2–5—The Finkleblurts have a new pet pup, Grub, and their cat, Madame Wigglesworth, is not amused. As irritated as Madame Wigglesworth is with Grub, she "hates" the humans "ten times more." She plots revenge and unites the family's pets establishing a new country: Petlandia. She writes a Petlandia Declaration of Independence, Constitution, and a national anthem. She would like to serve as queen, but establishes the country as a democracy where the pets will vote for their new president. Madame Wigglesworth can't believe it when Grub is voted to be Petlandia's president. Now Madame Wigglesworth has a bigger problem: How can she become the next Petlandia president? Cat and dog owners will see their own pets in the stereotypical personalities of Grub and Wigglesworth. The story is silly, goofy, and altogether a riot, but there are genuine lessons to be learned about getting along with others and the the qualities of an excellent leader embedded amid the wackadoodle plot. The story might even prompt a discussion about bullying behavior. VERDICT Told with classic cartoon, fast-paced silliness and drawings, this title is bound to capture the attention of even the most reluctant reader.—Helen Foster James, University of California at San Diego

By Young Mensan BookParade If you are a fan of Nickelodeon you would find 'Petlandia' an amusing read for a lazy summer afternoon. If you are a college literature professor you would have hard time giving the author any credit.Written by Peter Hannan, the creator of Nickelodeon animation series called 'A Cat and a Dog', the book, Petlandia, requires childlike imagination and light-hearted approach to visualize the chaotic plot into animation strips. If you have suchability you will laugh your heart out as wicked Madame Wiggleworth convinces royal Grub to join her revolution to kickthe humans out of the house and to declare the independence of the animal nation, Petlandia.Who is going to be the leader of the new nation? Would the pets' lives be better without humans? Would they live happilyever after? What would happen to poor humans? My favorite part of the book is the vivid personification of the animals with cleverly animated characters; the brightyet wicked Wiggleworth, the cat; the royal and friendly average-Joe Grub, the dog; the crooked and greedy Mr. Ugly, the rat; the sweet yet wish-wash Honeybaked, the mouse; and the quiet and astute Clowny, the fish. They represent theslice of human society. One elementary teacher gave the book high rating, but I disagree. While the depth and story line of the book are more properfor young readers in elementary lower grades, the intentional grammatical errors in Grub's dialogue can be quite confusing to them.Mature readers in elementary upper grades will get the joke, but find the plot quite childish and shallow. Children in betweenage 5 and 8 would mostly enjoy this book. However, I would recommend adult's supervision to clarify grammatical and spelling errorsintentionally used to build Grub's character. For failing to define target audience, I could only give 3 star to Petlandia. However, if you are young at heart and goofy in natureyou may enjoy this book regardless of your age. Are you ready to giggle and laugh?Isabella S, age 10, San Francisco Mensa

By Janet Hamilton Summary: Madame Wigglesworth has always had a certain feline disdain for the humans she lives with, but they treat her worshipfully enough that she puts up with them. Then Grub arrives. Grub slobbers, eats Madame’s crown, and wants his belly rubbed…endlessly. Madame Wigglesworth decides it’s time to take matters into her own hands. She convinces Grub and his sidekick Honeybaked Hamster that the humans no longer love them and should be kicked out of the house. The animals manage to drag the humans out of the house while they’re sleeping, then take over. Madame declares Petlandia a democracy, and bedlam ensues cat and dog vie to become president. The house is combed for potential voters, including bats, rats, and fleas. Can Petlandia survive political warfare?Pros: Liberally illustrated with cartoon animals, this is sure to be a hit for fans of Bad Kitty and the like. Even reluctant readers will find the combination of humor and action irresistible.Cons: My inner eight-year-old gave out around page 70, and it was tough going for me to make it through the back-and-forth presidential bickering. Actual eight-year-olds, though, will undoubtedly have no issue with this.

The illustrations are cartoony and complement the hilarity. I will be sure to recommend this to all my students.
