The Japanese word Reiki consists of two words: rei, meaning “universal energy,” and ki, meaning “life energy,” which links the body, mind, and spirit. Reiki originated in the Far East–in Japan–where it was discovered, but it is an ancient energy whose power is similar to the marvelous healing powers of the ancient masters. It is transmitted personally from teacher to pupil. Reiki treatment is done by placing the hands on the body, and transmitting energy from the practitioner to the recipient. The practitioner (who can also treat himself!) serves as a channel for the universal healing energy that passes through him to the recipient. Reiki was discovered by the Japanese theologian, Dr. Mikao Usui, at the end of the nineteenth century. Dr. Usui discovered the ancient healing art, which had been long forgotten by the world. He spent a great deal of time searching intensively for this ancient art, and performing an in-depth investigation of ancient laws of Buddha. After visiting a Zen monastery, Dr. Usui fasted and mortified his flesh on Mt. Kurama for a period of 21 days, during which he practiced asceticism and meditation. It was during this period, when Dr. Usui was granted enlightenment, that the path leading to the forces of universal healing opened up before him, and granted him the power of Reiki. This gift enabled Dr. Usui to transmit Reiki energy to others, and he taught them how to become a channel for this energy. In this way, the first great Reiki Masters received their training, among them Dr. Chujiro Hayashi, Hawayo Takato. and Phyllis Lei Furumoto. With the help of these great Masters, the art of Reiki reached the West, via personal training (attunement) and the training of additional teachers. Reiki stimulates the life energy inside us. Reiki cannot be “imposed,” nor can “too much” Reiki energy be transmitted to anyone, because the marvelous thing about Reiki energy is that it reaches the recipient in exactly the amount and manner that he is prepared to receive. In the same way, the power of Reiki healing is manifested. The more a person opens himself up to the wonderful energy, the greater the changes that will occur in his life. Of course, when we receive the gift of Reiki by means of training with a Master, the changes that are likely to occur in our lives are far-reaching. Most of the problems that beset a person, as well as his motives in this world, are the result of “separation.” Separation begins between the person and himself, and at the same time, between him and his God. When a person is not at one with himself, he is unable to feel the sensation of marvelous oneness with other people, and then it is possible to see all the regrettable manifestations of separation. People ask themselves, “Who am I really?”, and have difficulty expressing–sometimes even acknowledging–their true feelings, sensations, motives, and desires. They vacillate between wishes and hidden passions on the one hand, and self-criticism and guilt feelings on the other, find it difficult to accept themselves, and for this reason, have a hard time accepting those around them, and what is happening in their world. The feeling of oneness, which a person who has undergone Reiki training is likely to experience, is stunning in its power, and in its ability to change all one’s patterns of life and thought, opening a new path to self-knowledge. Sometimes, during Reiki treatment, the practitioner and the recipient feel that they are one. The energy that flows between them unites them. This feeling of oneness is unique and extraordinary, and will probably cause the person to ask himself many existential questions that he was previously afraid to ask, repressing and concealing them instead.

The author takes you on a historical journey on how reiki began to what the mysterys are behind this unusual healing method. I especially liked the fact that it was short but concise. I purchased other books that also covered this subject but found them over whelming! This was a joy to read!
