Mahnken Nearly Boswell is an A student in the running for a major chemistry scholarship, which she needs to escape the trailer park where she lives. As part of winning the scholarship, Nearly needs to perform community service hours, which involves tutoring other students. Soon the students she is tutoring start turning up dead, with each attack being presaged by a taunting personal ad in the classifieds that Nearly reads religiously. The police suspect that Nearly knows something about the murders, and she overhears them talking about assigning another student to get close to her and act as an informant. But when Nearly finds herself attracted to their informant, Reece, can she trust him to help her figure out who is behind the killings?I wanted to like this book more than I did. Unfortunately, there were flaws that kept it from being a great read for me.I did like some things about the novel. It was nice to have a main character be a girl who enjoys math and science, and I appreciated the fact that the serial killer mystery revolved around clues relating to chemistry, physics, and math. YA fiction can always use more STEM girls! And while I'm not generally a big fan of good boy/bad boy love triangles, the one in this book worked a little bit better for me than others. I think it was because the bad boy had a legitimate reason relating to the police investigation for spending time with Nearly, and so their relationship seemed to evolve a little more naturally, as opposed to some YA novels in which the bad boy seems to be attracted to the main character just because.However, there were a couple of aspects to the book that really didn't work for me. One is that, for a smart girl, Nearly seems really dumb at times. Her attempts to figure out who the killer is actually put her in situations that help to build the case against her, and she has to rely on Reece and others to bail her out. I just wish Nearly was more effective in putting her brains to use. The far bigger flaw in the book is the paranormal element--the fact that Nearly can touch people and sense their emotions. If you're trying to figure out who is murdering people, that would be great asset; you could touch people and see if their feelings match what they say and do, which would at least be a hint that they might be suspicious. So you would think Nearly would be going out of her way to touch people. But she has always avoided touching others, and it doesn't seem to occur to her that her ability could be an asset here. (Similarly, she refuses to touch Reece because she is convinced she won't like what she finds out about his emotions toward her--but really, wouldn't you rather know for sure whether or not a guy likes you than angsting about it?) I wish the author had just left the paranormal element out entirely, if it wasn't going to be used to its full potential as a plot device.This is a first novel, and I don't think Cosimano is a bad writer. I think Nearly Gone was a pretty ambitious effort at a YA thriller that got away from her a bit. I'm curious to see what she will write in the future and will definitely be checking out her next book.An ARC of this novel was provided by the publisher through NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.
4 of 4 people found the following review helpful. I will always love bad boys By Tori @ Bookish Affairs 3.5 StarsI must warn you first that I am really into bad boys in young adult literature. I don't know why, but they thrill me. I suppose I liked Nearly Gone as much as I did because Nearly reminded me of myself in many ways. Firstly, I'm very competitive and serious when it comes to my grades. I constantly compete with the smartest kids in my class to set the learning curve (I fail most of the time, but I still try). Secondly, I love puzzles. They confuse the heck out of me, but I love them. Thirdly, Nearly likes bad boys. Yeah, I like bad boys as well. The best thing about this novel is that I never guessed who the actual culprit was. I usually have a pretty good guess by the end of the novel, but by the end of Nearly Gone, I was completely lost because the person I thought was the culprit was completely and utterly innocent. I love mystery/thriller novels, therefore I was extremely glad that Nearly Gone actually made the reading experience enjoyable for me. I was literally on the edge of my seat while reading in the car. The characters, in my opinion, were intriguing. Each one had a back story (except the thugs. I really had no idea where they were coming from, but then again, they're thugs) that held weight and wasn't just there. And the killer's motive made sense at the end. Sure, it was a bit warped, but it made sense, which is all I really care about. For a debut novel, I think Nearly Gone surprised me in a good way. I found this at Costco today, so I bought it, and I honestly didn't expect to read it in one day. I've been in a reading slump lately, so to just pick up and book and polish it off like desert felt amazing. There were a few subjects not touched on like how Nearly could feel someone's emotions when she touched them (I wish this was elaborated on a bit more), but in the end I don't feel like I'm missing out on too much. I really enjoyed the idea of narcs (Narcotics officer) being in this novel. After watching the movie Snitch, I've been interested in undercover criminals busting drug deals, so this book was perfect for me. I'm surprised to find myself waiting to reread this novel in the future since I don't usually reread. I honestly really enjoyed it. To touch on Reece's stalker-like behavior a bit, it wasn't all that bad. In his defense, he was told to watch over Nearly. It was only when it wasn't a job for him anymore that it became a little creepy. He breaks into her locker to trifle through her stuff, forces her to kiss him in the hallway, and a few other things like that. Unsurprisingly, I still managed to liked Reece by the end of the novel. A lot. (Like I said, I have a thing for bad boys. So sue me. I'm a young teenager.) In conclusion, Nearly Gone was an entertaining read, and it managed to keep my interest throughout the entire day, which books these days can't seem to do all that often. I bounce between books a lot, but Nearly Gone kept me from doing that. I can't wait to reread this book in the future. But I do warn you that if you're a person who isn't into bad boys and the justification of bad behavior due to hotness level, then this book isn't likely for you. But who knows? You still might enjoy it as much as I did!
3 of 3 people found the following review helpful. This was a huge disappointment By Stacie Aww man I wanted to like this book so much! The cover was beautiful, and the premise sounded good. Sadly, that's not what I got at all. It began with a good start, but then it just started getting annoying and worse by the second. We have Nearly, the main character who can feel what other people are feeling just by touching them. She's also really smart at chemistry and is trying to get a scholarship for college so that she can get out of the ghetto. Her father left she and her mother when she was little. Every Friday, she gets the newspaper to try and find her father. She believes that one day he will leave a message for her. Well she starts receiving messages, but not the good kind. In those cryptic messages, murders start happening. They keep leaving messages for Nearly to solve, all the while making her look like she's the target. You would think she would turn to the cops and let them solve it, but no she does everything all on her own adding more suspicion on her. Her friends would even tell her not to go to the crime scene because then she'll be in even more trouble. Or they would try to her some where else, that way she had an alibi and witnesses. Do you think she listened to any of it?! Noooo!!! She was stubborn, naive, and got on my nerves the whole time. In comes Prince Charming, Reece. He's supposedly trying to help her when really he's just a Narc helping the police and himself get out of jail. I did not really care for him. He has a bad past of his own so he's not exactly a nice person. I did not like the way he treated Nearly because he was controlling, had a short temper, and was slightly abusive. He would try to get her to open up, yet when she would ask him about his past he would snap at her and leave. Other times he would choose slutty looking clothes for her because that's the kind of girl he dated. Nope he did not have a way with words, just his bad boy looks.I would have thought Nearly wanted her scholarship to get out of that bad town, but she proved herself time and time again that she just didn't care. She was too distracted by boys and solving murders to get her head in straight. The only thing I did like were the many twists and turns to figure out who the killer was. I figured out early on who it was, but I hadn't quite figured the reason why he/she did it. Overall, this was a huge let down and I would never read it again.
