Brilliant Book Perfectly Captures the Essence of the Elementary School Boy By Young Mensan BookParade “Absolutely Brilliant!” “Ace!” Both of these British phrases perfectly describe the hilarious children’s graphic novel, Excellent Excuses (and other good stuff), which is part of the best-selling U.K. children’s series Tom Gates. This funny and enjoyable novel centers on elementary- schooler Tom Gates and his struggles with homework, teachers, classmates, and his super annoying sister Delia, as well as the adventures he has with his best mate Derek and their band the Dogzombies. Whether it be thinking up new ideas on how to annoy his sister or getting his band’s first gig, Tom Gates will be sure to make you laugh with his realistic and hilarious experiences that schoolchildren all around the world can relate to. This crazy font and extravagant doodle-filled book can be called the “Diary of a Wimpy Kid” of the U.K., as it is sure to get kids into reading and have them laughing out loud on every page. My favorite parts were the Dogzombies first gig at a surprise location and when Tom catches someone sneaking gold stickers onto the sticker chart at school. The cool fonts and funny doodles on each page, combined with an unforgettable and relatable character make this Tom Gates book worth reading. This book is perfect for any child who loves Diary of a Wimpy Kid or has a hard time finding a good, enjoyable read. Other readers will enjoy just as much as I did because of Tom’s unique humor as well as his funny experiences at home and school. They were a lifesaver when my 10 year old son tried to avoid reading at night. My daughter also loves them- kind of a British version of the Diary of a Wimpy Kid series but better in my opinion!
