About the Author Christina Wald has done illustration for a wide variety of toys, games, books, and magazines everything from board books and pop-up books to Star Wars role-playing games and G.I. Joe package art. She studied Industrial Design at the University of Cincinnati. When she is not in the studio, Christina is out urban sketching, biking, and/or traveling. She lives in Cincinnati with her toy engineer husband, Troy, and two cats.

By Deb Notebook and pencil in hand, Eli was ready to pass through the gates of the Fibonacci Zoo. It was no ordinary zoo and he had to look carefully and discover just what was different about it. The first thing Eli and his father spotted was a lone alligator. Hmmmm, not anything unusual about that and Eli recorded his finding in his notebook. The little notebook soon read "1 alligator" and "1 bison." Just what was so special about this zoo anyway?Eli's teacher said that the Fibonacci Zoo "was different from most zoos," but even though his list began to grow there was only one unusual thing about it. The unusual thing about it was the lone fact that there weren't a lot of animals. Eli continued to observe and write: "2 camels," "3 dolphins," "5 elephants," and "8 flamingos." All of a sudden he began to see a pattern and exclaimed "if I take any two numbers in order and then add them up, I get the next number." Hmmmm, next up were the gorillas.Eli began to work through his pattern, trying to visualize and work through the formula. His father smiled, knowing that Eli had found out the secret to the Fibonacci Zoo. "See?" He began to explain to his father. "1 + 1 = 2. 1 + 2 = 3. 2 + 3 = 5. And 3 + 5 = 8." They rounded the corner, checking out the gorillas and marking the number in his notebook. He began to count them to see if his hypothesis was correct. Can you finish the formula and come to the same conclusion Eli had? Just how many gorillas would they see?This is an excellent book to introduce young students to numbers and patterns. The visually imagery presented in this book will make it easy for students to understand and grasp Fibonacci sequencing. Simply introducing mathematical concepts sans a way for children to visualize them can be a daunting task for many. In addition to Eli's notebook there are small sidebars with the equations and sequence (2 + 3 = 5 and 1 1 2 3 5). The artwork is very vibrant and appealing, drawing one's eye to the animals. Eli enjoyed the animals he saw. He had discovered the secret of the Fibonacci Zoo. He couldn’t wait to see how many animals would be in its next exhibit. Can you guess?” Tom Robinson writes in his children’s book, Fibonacci Zoo.This thirty-two unnumbered page paperback with a thick folding jacket cover targets children ages four to eight years old who enjoy educational and mathematical information about nature. With no scary scenes, it may be best read out loud by adults to beginner readers due to some complicated wording.In this story promoting mathematics, Eli and his dad visit a unique zoo. Upon arriving, Eli immediately notices one alligator swimming in a lake. Writing down his finding in a notebook, the boy and his father move to the next animal’s locale: a solo bison. He writes down one animal again.In the next area, there are two camels; the boy adds the number two. The process continues as the two view three dolphins, five elephants, eight flamingos, thirteen gorillas, and finally twenty-one hippopotamuses. Eli recognizes there is a pattern to the order and number of animals where the last two areas’ numbers are added together to make up the count in the next section. At the end of the story, it is up to the reader to guess how many iguanas will be in the next exhibit.The last four pages have more educational tools of learning activities for creative minds that involve number patterns with games, Fibonacci numbers found in nature and our bodies, information of the golden spiral, and an animal matching puzzle involving locations.What makes this book fun is not only the math concept of patterns, but also the informational data at the back of the book for older readers regarding the Fibonacci sequence and its discoverer, Leonardo Pisano. Any child will enjoy looking at the colorful drawings while counting and adding up numbers to reach the patterned answers.Author Robinson has been a high school math teacher for over twenty years in Washington. Writing several books involving science and math, he challenges readers to be educated and interested in learning. Illustrator Wald has designed artworks for several toys, games, books, and magazines. Author Tom Robinson has taken the mathematical concept of fibonacci sequencing and applied it simplistically in a story where a young boy and his father visit a zoo. As they visit the various animal displays, Eli (the boy) notices that there is a pattern. Each display's number of animals increases and that increase is predictable by adding the number of the previous two displays. He has basically discovered the concept of fibonacci sequencing.We've all seen the beauty of spirals in nature and mathematicians have discovered that this is actually the same as fibonacci sequencing. Personally, not being mathematically inclined, understanding this concept is a bit beyond me but I do follow what Eli has discovered.The illustrator, Christina Wald, has used the imagery of circles (whether this was done intentionally or not) which allows the reader's mind subconsciously to entertain the theory of the fibonacci sequence spiral. Written for the grade K-3 child, the concept might not be easily grasped in this age group even though the story and presentation is simple.Using the concept of entertaining stories to bring out a mathematical concept is a growing trend in educational fiction. In this, as with other Arbordale Publishing books, there are several pages in the back of the book that present material and activities for the creative mind.
