Summer Stevenson is an eleven-year-old military kid who dreams of having a permanent home and swimming in the Olympics one day, just like her idol Olympian Lia Neal. Needham, Author Flexible Wings by Veda StampsThe title—“Flexible Wings’ offers the analogy that a hummingbird is much like a displaced youngster, moving every few years from one home to another. Just as a hummingbird quickly flits from one spot to another, over great distance, but always finds a new home. The theme continues to develop as Summer, the main character, applies the great strength, flexibility and determination of the hummingbird to her own life, with determined efforts to fit in, make new friends, plus excel in competitive swimming. This while facing the challenges of a African/American mixed race child of two military parents, a precocious little sister, a Japanese American grandmother, all while immersed into the world of competitive swimming. Summer learns to evolve from a less flexible, shy, and even resentful youngster, into a mature, engaging, and responsible young teen, on the verge of early adulthood. This is a story of a military family, with the mother away from home on assignment. However, I worked many years in the corporate relocation field. It is common for corporate families to be relocated every few years too, and the disruption of the family life is hardest on the children, especially those early teen years. Thus, this story applies to all displaced children and inspires the young reader to open their mind to confront their own challenges and embrace a quest to become all they can be . . . much like the slogan of the U.S. Army to . . . “be all you can be”. This story may be a bit long for a pre-teen reader, at nearly 300 pages. But it sustains a pace that builds to the very end, and engages the reader to turn those pages. Thus, this well-written and inspirational story is highly recommended . . . especially for families “on the move”.

Flexible, Fearless, and Focused By Beth Rodgers 'Flexible Wings' by Veda Stamps is an intimate telling of a young girl's love for her family and passion for swimming. Summer is the daughter of two military parents, and even though everyone around her sees them as heroes, Summer cannot seem to come to terms with this fact. To her, they are just her parents - people who are tearing her away from the first home she has lived in over several years that she has not wanted to leave. Leaving her best friend Esmerelda and the people and places she knows does not seem like it will be easy, but there is no getting out of it.When the family makes the move to Valencia, California, Summer must learn to transform herself into a strong-willed young woman, as her entrance into sixth grade looms ever closer. When her mom is deployed yet again, Summer grapples with feelings of anger at her mother for leaving the family, and insecurity at not being able to make friends during this transitional time in her life. Eager to join the swim team, her parents sign her up before her mom's deployment, and she begins her competitive career. The coach, in tune with Summer's needs, and trying to help her succeed to the best of her ability, gives his team pep talks. His focus stems around encouraging his team to be flexible, fearless, and focused - three traits that Summer finds herself being more accomplished in as the novel goes on.Her flexibility comes about in terms of a metaphor that the author has injected into the novel - a hummingbird. Early on in the novel, as Summer and her family first move into their new home, she comes across a hummingbird, which she describes to be "fearlessly hovering" in front of her. She "can't believe how fast its wings are - flexible - and colorful!" She wonders "if their flexibility is what makes them able to be so quick and so fearless." Watching Summer evolve as the novel progressed, into a smart, focused, and driven young woman constantly reminded me of the description of the hummingbird from earlier on in the storytelling. Summer finds flexibility in her new life while her mother is away, she finds the courage to be fearless, and she remains focused on her goals, all the while remaining hopeful that her life will not veer too far off the path that she has liked it being on so far.Veda Stamps crafted a realistic, courageous, and metaphorical tale of hope, strength, and love, and I am eager to read more of her work. The read was quick and full of encouraging ideas, as well as the normal middle school drama, that make reading young adult and middle grade novels so worthwhile.Beth Rodgers, Author of 'Freshman Fourteen,' A Young Adult Novel

A child's voice on moving By Christina Steiner A great book to read for 9 to 12 year-old children but also for adults who want to know about the inner life of a child forced to move into a new town and find new friends.Summer is the older girl in a mixed-race military family. Not as outgoing as her five year old sister, she struggles with another move her parents make. Relocating again means finding new friends, adjusting to a new school and fitting into a new environment. Summer resents the way others portray her parents as heroes, she’d prefer especially her mom to be just a mother.Her only consolation is that her parents finally agreed to let her join a swim team, a dream she had ever since she witnessed on TV Lia Neal, a female African American Chinese Olympic swimmer, take a bronze medal in the 2012 Olympics in London.Her world is turned upside down, when her mom shortly after their move to Valencia, California is deployed again. Thanks to her retired military father and her lively Baachan, her grandmother, Summer slowly conquers her fears, insecurities and nightmares. She finds new friends and improves her swimming abilities. Her learning is filled with struggles but she grows notably during summer and fall until her mom returns, and ultimately understands her mom’s needs to follow her dreams.A well written story by Veda Stamps that rings true in everyday life. Many kids feel the pressure of constant change in their world. Military kids are another casualty of war if they are not helped and protected by family members and the community. This book applies also to children of divorce or other tragedies in life. Changes that adults make ask a lot of young people, who often have no voice. Sometimes, as Veda Stamps does in this story, sports and something to hold on to, like a Hummingbird necklace, can focus the children in a good direction, given enough time and understanding.I received this book as gift.
