What Happens When Your Least Favorite Person Is Your Only Hope for Rescue?

When Channing O’Banning’s BFF goes gaga over new boy Marco, Channing wishes she could send him back to where he came from. Her wish turns into her worst nightmare when Marco tags along on her family’s dream trip to Marco’s home country of Costa Rica.

With her secret sketchbook in tow, a colored pencil stuck in her ponytail, and adorable pot-bellied pig, Teeny, by her side, Channing embarks on a high-flying adventure through the Costa Rican rainforest. But when the feisty fourth-grade artist makes a few wrong turns and gets lost in the jungle, she discovers that maybe Marco isn’t so bad after all.

Through her wild escapades, Channing learns just how important it is to keep the earth—and friendships—healthy.

Ever since that new boy, Marco Ramos, has moved into town, there's been nothing but trouble. First, her best friend Maddy has gone all goo-goo eyed over Marco and doesn't pay a bit of attention to her anymore. Then Mr. Boring (er...Doring) insists on having a major science quiz...in the last week of school (who does that, anyway?), and guess who acts like a big know-it-all about plants and animals? That's right, Marco Ramos. Just because he's from Costa Rica, he thinks he's some super scientist or something. Then she finds out that Marco's dad is going to be working with her dad, so even at home she can't escape Marco. To top it all off, her parents announce that they're going on summer vacation to Costa Rica...and Marco is going to go with them. Will the trouble never end?Channing O'Banning and the Rainforest Rescue is a fun, short chapter book for middle-elementary readers. The first half of the story covers regular school life--misunderstandings among friends, tests and bad grades, and getting ready for summer break. The last half covers time spent in Costa Rica, exploring the rainforest, and introduces larger topics of ecology and responsibility for the environment. Problems are resolved quickly (perhaps too quickly, and with a bit too much help from the kindly, eccentric Nana), and some of the information covered while in Costa Rica sounded a bit too much like a science class. I can get over that last, I suppose, since I know that going on tours of places like that is very much like a science class, complete with lectures, but it did seem a bit preachy for the age group. Overall, it was a fun story, and I did enjoy reading about how the aspiring artist Channing would draw to work through her problems (or when she was excited about something, or learned something new, or really anything). It was a pretty good blend of fiction and informational writing with interesting characters (including Teeny, the pot-bellied pig) to keep things exciting.

By Zoe @ Blessed and Bewildered Angela Spady has written a wonderful book for young readers. Channing O’Banning and the Rainforest Rescue is clean and has a positive moral. I know that my 9-year-old will enjoy reading it and I am happy for him to do so.Fourth-grader Channing is one fast, run-on sentence. I love it. She is a little whirling dervish; quirky, zany, but a wee bit jealous and she has a bit of an issue with misplaced blame as most fourth graders tend to do. There are parts of this book that I found hilarious, such as connect the dots on your freckles and others endearing, such as Channing’s love of colored pencils and the fun names that she gives them. The story is filled with cute characters, my favorite of which is Teeny whom I believe i to be the best behaved pig on the planet.Tammie Lyon is a talented illustrator. The drawings are funk and fun; the pages are brightly colored and engaging. I looked at her website and she is, in my opinion, gifted with an incredible talent for illustration geared towards children. The moral of the story… Your child will learn that being a little know it all can often hurt you; you may miss out on the wonderful things that people who have different experiences and perspectives can show you. Channing also discovers that If you work together you might even be able to teach others something in return."I guess I needed to stop and really think before making judgments about people—especially when I didn’t know the whole story."As you can likely discern from the title of the story Spady also encourages a green lifestyle. She advocates being thoughtful of your environment and taking small steps towards caring for it. There is a section at the end of the book which gives kids, and their parents, some practical ways to save the Rainforests.I have no reservations allowing my child to read and enjoy Channing O’Banning and the Rainforest Rescue.I received a review copy in exchange for my honest and unbiased review. My thanks to the author and publisher. For all of my reviews visit my blog at https://blessedandbewildered.wordpress.com

By Splashes Into Books This is another story in the Channing O'Banning series. The first one that I read and reviewed was "Channing O'Banning and the Turquoise Trail" and, like that one, this also has fifteen chapters, a “Did you know?” section, andis targeted at pupils aged from 6 to 10 years old who are independently reading longer stories. It tells the story of fourth grader Channing O’Banning as she struggles in Science, especially after the arrival of a new student, from Costa Rica, Marco. When Channing's best friend really likes Marco, the two girls struggle to maintain their friendship and Channing clearly demonstrates her disbelief in all he says, so when Marco goes on holiday with Channing and her family it is sure to be eventful! Learn about the Costa Rican rainforest, the special plants, butterflies, birds and other wildlife that live there. Also learn how all this ecosystem is in danger because of deforestation and what Channing learns she can do to help protect such areas by going green. This story is a great way to alert students to the dangers such fragile and important habitats are in because of the actions of mankind. The information and awareness is developed in the story as Channing learns about the situations and what she can do to help. Like in the other book in this series, it narrates many events and interactions that children in the target age group will be able to relate to. It also has moral messages included within the story that are clear but integral to the story and not forced or artificial. There’s lots of information shared about Costa Rica, especially the rainforests. I'm really impressed by this series, think it will really appeal to children and is a lovely way of helping them learn in a fun but memorable manner. There is extra information in the “Did you know” and "Want to Save the Rainforests? Here's How!" sections and website addresses for anyone wishing to find further information. Teachers, I really recommend you check this out both as a reading book for children and an interesting way to share information about rainforests, recycling and going green. Thanks to the author, publishers and NetGalley, too, for letting me read an ARC in exchange for an honest review.
