From School Library Journal Gr 9 Up—Sixteen-year-old Indigo Blackwood wants nothing more than to focus on her position on the cheerleading squad, her new boyfriend Devon, and patching things up with her jealous friend Bianca. Hoping to increase her popularity, Indigo is eager to avoid her nerdy former friend Paige. The teen is also embarrassed by her New Age hippie mother, who runs an occult shop in Los Angeles, and her party animal aunt Penny. After witnessing an apparent suicide, however, Indigo soon finds herself in the center of a top-secret bloody feud between dueling factions of wizards and sorcerers. Her family has been tasked with protecting a witchcraft Bible that holds the key to destroying witches everywhere. Villains Frederick and Leo's powers are truly far-reaching, as they wipe memories, use telepathy, and freeze the entire city for their epic showdown. With the aid of a hunky stranger, Indigo must quickly master her newly developed magical flying abilities in order to protect her friends and family. There is a hint of a love triangle and plenty of drama as the protagonist discovers who her true friends are. Krys's debut novel offers a fast-paced plot with plenty of shocking twists and turns and a cliff-hanger ending that will appeal to fans of paranormal romances.—Madigan McGillicuddy, Atlanta-Fulton Public Library, Atlanta, GA

From Booklist Debut author Krys finds the funny and fantastical sweet spot between magic and high-school drama in this mash-up of Mean Girls and The Craft. Snarky L.A. teen Indigo Blackwood, popular girl and cheerleader extraordinaire, has a pretty normal life dating the captain of the football team and avoiding her dorky neighbor, Paige, as much as humanly possible. That all comes to a crashing halt, though, when Indie and Paige witness the death of a young man right in the middle of Melrose Avenue, setting off a string of supernatural events. As it turns out, Indigo is the latest in a long line of witches who protect a powerful heirloom book called The Bible. Before she knows it, Indigo gets yanked into a war between witches and sorcerers, and she is forced to grow up fast while discovering the extent of her power. Indigo is not always relatable and sometimes very shallow, but Krys deftly balances the teen’s personal growth with the well-paced twists and turns of this series opener. Grades 8-11. --Stacey Comfort

I honestly had to force myself to turn the pages even though this genre is one of my favorites. The heroine, Indigo, was way too dense for her own good. She puts herself in harms way without even really thinking it through. I wanted to shake her very hard more than a few times. And don't get me started on the whole social stereotyping. Indigo is a "hot" cheerleader and supposedly a top student, but she doesn't have more sense than a rock. Her boyfriend is the flirty, star athlete, gorgeous and desired by all, but then she's shocked when he betrays her. Add to the love triangle (because every teen novel needs one nowadays) a creepy stalker guy who supposedly dies in front of her ... but then comes back later to taunt and tease her, but she falls for him anyway. Her mother owns an occult store where she stores a very precious witch bible out in the open. Then surprise, surprise someone steals the bible and Indie's mother is murdered. Why would they do that? Well, Indie doesn't know. See her mom told her how precious the witch bible was, but never told Indie anything more than that. So Indie learns about who she is and what the bible really was from a stranger. By the end of the book I had a red spot on my forehead from smacking it so much. I will admit that some parts had me laughing ... but not because it was suppose to be funny. I seriously wasted way too long on this book. I should have stopped reading halfway through but I thought it could only get better. Silly me.

I felt satisfied with the ending, yet was desperate for more! I don’t know how I’ll survive until 2015 when book two comes out! Fair warning, I loved this book so much, I was barely able to put it into words.. So this review is pretty much me just babbling about how awesome it is in the vaguest way so I don’t spoil anything! You have been warned…! :)I loved Indie (aka, Indigo, the main character). She was pretty innocent and slightly helpless in the beginning, but she didn’t stay that way for long. She did what she had to in order to survive and, when she grew tired of constantly being in danger, she stepped up and fought to learn who she was and what being a witch meant. She definitely went through a lot throughout the book and she matured a lot, especially near the end, when she took charge of the situation.Bishop was… Whoa. I adored him more than words can ever describe! I’m adding him to the Book Boyfriend List! He’s right up there with Morpheus and Matt Finch as far as being swoon-worthy! He had a sarcastic sense of humor and some hilariously evil one-liners, not to mention his physical description. Basically, he had everything a swoon-worthy YA book boy needs to be, well, swoon-worthy! The tension between him and Indie was hilarious and when they finally gave in, it was epic!Paige was an awesome friend. Indie was so horrible to her for so long, Paige had no obligation to stick by Indie, yet she did. I really felt like Paige was a relatable character and I would have loved to see more of her in the story. Although, that ending… I have a feeling we WILL see more of her in book two!Jezebel wasn't the nicest person, but I loved her anyway. There was just something about her that made me want to like her. She was hilarious! Though, at the same time, I was a little nervous about trusting her at certain points throughout for the book. Bianca was hilarious in the beginning, but she turned out to be an awful friend. Now, Aunt Penny… I really can’t say much about her without spoiling things. But first, let me say her name called to mind Charmed and Grams. So I automatically loved her. But then, near the end… I had this weird, gut feeling that she knew more than she was letting on… And I’m anxious to see what her role is in the second book. I’m really hoping she plays a bigger part in the plot for book two than she did in Hexed! There were some pretty heart-wrenching moments in this book, as well as some major heart-stopping moments. One thing in particular that happened.. I kept hoping it was a joke or reversible or… something, anything! I refused to believe it had actually happened. But unfortunately, it wasn’t a joke and it wasn’t reversed and, not gonna lie, I teared up a bit!The ending had me on the edge of my seat! Every time I thought one thing was going to happen, something else entirely happened! I thought I knew where it was going and I was partly right, but mostly wrong! I had a weird feeling about one thing, though, and I was mostly right! Sorry for the vagueness – This is the hardest non-spoiler review I’ve ever had to write!Bottom line, Michelle Krys is an amazing storyteller. She crafted a wonderful world, amazing characters and a terrific plot that makes me beyond happy witch books are becoming a thing again. Not only am I already desperate for book two, but I’m desperate for whatever else Krys writes outside the Hexed world. She’s definitely a debut author to watch out for!

It is very similar to many other YA paranormal books, but this was still an enjoyable read!Indigo (Indie) is a popular cheerleader and has a pretty normal life, excerpt for the fact that her mom owns an occult. A boy dies right in front of Indie, clutching the address of the occult shop, and a book Indie's mom is possessive of gets taken. Also, a strange boy gets showing up at the oddest of times. It turns out that Indie might actually be a witch and the book that was stolen? Holds a spell that makes it possible for sorcerers (witches' enemy) to kill all witches. The idea and the basic plot is very interesting! So much goes on in this book and it is done so well that I was constantly turning the pages to see what happens next!Though, the concepts in this book are very interesting, I have seen some other similar witchy books. As far as characters, Indie is okay but it does take awhile to like her. I'm not real wild about popular main characters who see their popularity as the most important thing. And, yeah, sometimes these characters aren't very nice. Indie wasn't a mean girl per say, but she is blinded by popularity. She grows as the book goes on though, which I loved! She begins to realize that her 'friends' were not really her friends and that there are much more important things than popularity! As far as other characters, I liked Paige. Paige is this girl that Indie has ignored most of her life and considers a geek. Paige is such a great character and I really wish she got some more screen time! Though, Indie, again, annoyed me because she did use Paige a lot. Bishop is another character and I don't know if I like him or not. I guess I like his personality overall. He's full of snark and I love that in a character, but I did find him a bit creepy and annoying. 1. because he was a stalker. 2. because he was always evading questionsAs far as romance, it was okay. It didn't distract from the plot too much, which gets a thumbs up from me! I already mentioned my thoughts on the love interest (not a spoiler. Us YA readers should be very well-versed in being able to detect who the love interest is early on), so some of my okay-ness of the romance stems on some of my feelings towards him. All in all, though, I did want them to be together.IN CONCLUSIONThis is a bit of a common YA, but I still think it's worth picking up! It is very exciting and does put out some very interesting ideas! The book does end in a bit of a cliffhanger, so I am definitely picking up the next one!
