Amy Plum, internationally bestselling author of the Die for Me series, delivers a heart-pounding adventure perfect for fans of Michael Grant, Veronica Rossi, and Alexandra Bracken. Until the Beginning is the sequel to After the End, which Marie Lu, New York Times bestselling author of the Legend series and the Young Elites series, called “wonderfully riveting.” In this stunning and exhilarating conclusion to the duology, Juneau has been searching for her people and for answers . . . and she is about to find both.

When Juneau’s clan disappeared, she lost so much more than her friends and family. She soon discovered everything she thought she knew about her life was a lie. Her people’s gifts were actually secret abilities that others wanted, desperately enough to kidnap an entire village.

Juneau set off on a cross-country journey with her new companion, Miles, to find her clan, which led them to a game preserve in New Mexico. Now Juneau’s people are finally within reach, and she will stop at nothing to save them. But she has a target on her back too, because unbeknownst to her she is the key to unlocking everything. To rescue her people—and herself—Juneau must discover what she and her abilities are truly capable of.

From the Back Cover

"I have had a powerful weapon at my fingertips my whole life, but I'm finally learning to wield it. I feel unstoppable."

When Juneau's clan disappeared, she lost more than her friends and family; she lost her entire world. She discovered her life was a lie—her people weren't living in the wilderness because they were the sole survivors of a nuclear war. They were in hiding, hoping no one would find them and learn their secret: they never get sick, they hardly age, and they have the power to communicate with nature.

Juneau is closer than ever to finding them, and she couldn't have gotten this far without Miles. Although he originally pursued her with the goal of turning her over to his father, he has become her greatest ally. Even as an outsider, Miles has helped Juneau realize she is far more powerful than she'd ever believed.

But now the same people who took Juneau's clan are after her too. Somehow she is the key to unlocking the mystery of her people's gifts. To rescue her clan and protect their secrets, Juneau must push past the boundaries of what she was taught, to discover what she is truly capable of.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Pales in comparison to book 1 By Ollie I was pretty lukewarm on this sequel, mostly because the characters were flat. And given that there is very little plot in this book, the quality of the characters is incredibly important, and I just could not connect with them.Let's start with my girl Juneau. In the first book, Juneau was kind of fantastic, albeit a little awkward because she knew nothing about the modern world. She was fascinating like a zoo animal--I honestly just kind of liked following her around while the reality of the world smacked her in the face again and again. In this book, she is Katniss Everdeen, arrows and all, somehow able to detach her emotions from her duties. This would be cool if I hadn't seen this so many times. And I honestly don't know much more about her. She's not very funny, she's not particularly emotional. She just...is. I wish she had some quirks or something that separated her from every tough, confident girl in YA fiction. But no, she's just like--"I like animals! I like my tribe! I like Miles! I am very good at living off the land!" Cool, boo. Except not.Miles totally lost me. All of his useless charm and bad boy swagger from book one is gone. He's became this kind of lovesick, slightly insecure guy who becomes single-mindedly focused on helping Juneau out. Which, sure, is actually a great personality rotation, given that he kind of sucked as a person in book one. But his suckiness made him interesting, and without it he's just not interesting anymore.I could not buy into the romance between the two. It went from zero to sixty. In book one, they made out once kind of randomly. In this book, they are full on in love and bumping uglies whenever they're alone. Their romance didn't make me swoon on any level. It just was, and nothing more. By the time the story actually picked up, I was just kind of over it. They launch into quite a few long conversations about pharmaceuticals and immortality and people who just seem to be evil for the sake of being evil.I wish that there had been some bigger differences in terms of pacing and plot from book 1, given that the characters had changed. It just wasn't interesting to me, and I found it hard to invest in anything that was happening.Also--video games =/= real life, Miles. So...stop pretending that Halo has prepared you for life. Stop.I would only read this for some closure on the plot, but as a novel altogether, it was unsatisfying. Kind of sad about that...

She soon discovered everything she thought she knew about her life was a lie. Her people's gifts were actually secret abilities that others wanted, desperately enough to kidnap an entire village.Juneau and her new companion Miles's cross-country journey to find her clan has led them to a game preserve in New Mexico. Now Juneau's people are finally within reach, and she will stop at nothing to save them. But she has a target on her back too, because unbeknownst to her she is the key to unlocking everything. To rescue her people - and herself - Juneau must discover what she, and her abilities, are truly capable of.Juneau was still kickass. She was awesome. Discovering cool-ass powers and new places. She was cool. Juneau had powers. She has spirit and fight. I liked that. She was one of those characters I had a deep respect for. She cared about family. She cared about friends. She was ruthless when she needed to be. She was a fighter when she needed to be. But she could also relax. (She had to get used to the modern technology first.) I thought that her discoveries about the truth of her clan and her important part was interesting. Following that was a major dilemma. Should she stay? Or go? Trust them? Or not? She was forced to choose. And I respected her decisions.I started to grow respect for Miles. He became this strong character. Charismatic. A leader. He was born for this position. He was born to lead. I thought his becoming was great. He changed. The Yara changed him. The Rite changed him. He was connected to nature. He was connected to the world. This opened him up. Miles had many bad things happen to him. He had to suffer through many things. His mother's depression. His father's ruthlessness. And Miles had to accept these things. And with Juneau's help, he accepted his life. All these things made me accept his personality. The plot wasn't the best. The scenes at Hunt's farm/ranch/whatever were cool. The most of the book was traveling. While I don't mind a cool traveling-across-America book, this book wasn't meant for cross-country trips. I felt like it should have been more about the clan and discoveries. The clan rescue scenes were great, though. Miles's true nature came out. I liked that. And Juneau was willing to do what she had to for her clan. I liked her devotion. These scenes were pressured. They were careful. I liked how the action came in. And how the clan fought. They fought with everything they had because if they didn't...well...let's be positive. And all the betrayals? Oh man. You don't always expect betrayals. The romance was a bit unexpected for me. I didn't think we needed that. It was awkward for me. I felt like they didn't have too much chemistry. And you guys know how romance sits with me. I was never a big fan.I thought that Juneau did gain something because of the romance. She gained a friend. Someone to trust. And she needed that definitely. I felt like Juneau gained a friend, but she didn't need a boyfriend. The romance wasn't needed. A good friend is always great, though. The two were...okay, though. How they worked together. They were a good team. Her way with nature and her survival skills combined with his tactic knowledge. (Thank god for video games!) It was something else. Sadly, they didn't get many chances to work together. Sigh...The ending was great. A good end. It came the story closure. They were no questions. I felt like the characters got justice. (I have to agree with what happened to Whit. He deserved it.)The last scenes were great. Reunion with the promise of meeting again. The oracle part? Funny actually. I enjoyed that. Miles played oracle, telling Juneau exactly what she wanted to hear. That was great. The story ended. And there isn't anything I want from it. That's a great thing.Weather:Sunny with a chance of clouds and 50% chance of rain3.5/5

0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. This adventure will leave you breathless By Maja (The Nocturnal Library) Amy Plum, one of my most trusted YA authors, has apparently reached new heights. Her Until I Die trilogy has a very special place in my heart, but After the End is in a completely different category. With its imaginative worldbuilding and heroes we can admire and adore every step of the way, this duology is really every reader’s dream come true.In this second part, Juneau and Miles are outnumbered and outgunned. They have enemies on all sides and very few resources, but for Juneau, abandoning her clan simply isn’t an option. Plans need to be made and battles need to be fought, and Juneau’s sense of honor and responsibility through it all is stupendous.Oddly enough, Until the Beginning is a bit slower than After the End. It is a different book, focused more on Juneau’s introspection and crisis of faith. With everything she thought she knew about her world gone, Juneau has much to consider and make some very difficult choices for herself. Miles also faces some enormous changes and although the struggles with them somewhat, he quickly takes them in stride, as is his way. Unlike Juneau, he is more ‘go with the flow’ kind of guy, which is certainly an advantage when your world shifts from one second to the next.Their relationship develops beautifully in a very short time. There is a true friendship and companionship between these two, followed by deep and honest trust. When you have all that, love follows not far behind, and even though it happened in mere weeks, theirs was a connection I believed completely. There’s not much to do except wholeheartedly recommend this duology to all of you. Amy has shown us that her imagination knows no bounds and that she’s an author with so much to offer. I’m willing to bet that we’ll be getting many incredible stories from her, and all those updates about her life in Paris certainly don’t hurt either. If you have yet to meet Juneau and Miles, make sure to do so as soon as you can. From Alaska to Nevada, their adventure will leave you breathless.

Life isn't always smooth sailing-even with magical boots! "A fanciful and fun read―where do we get a pair of those boots?" ―Sheryl Berk and Carrie Berk, authors of The Cupcake Club series

Maggie Malone wants to fit in at her new school, so she decides to join the swim team. Only her tryout is a complete flop (of the belly variety, to be exact). What Maggie needs is a little help – from her mostly magical boots!

What could be better than spending a day as Marina Tide, daughter of a famous oceanographer? So Maggie jumps into Marina's shoes―er, flippers―for a day of sunbathing, ocean breezes and an adorable pet dolphin! But there's a treasure-hunting traitor aboard her ship... and it's up to Maggie to save the crew and the coral reef before her time runs out.

"This lighthearted contemporary fantasy will appeal to fans of Sarah Mlynowski's "Whatever After" series and be a nice fit for readers graduating from the "Katie Kazoo" series by Nancy Krulik." ―School Library Journal

0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. Fun addition to the series! By Caryn Twelve-year-old Maggie Malone convinces her friend Elizabeth that they should try out for the swim team, but when Elizabeth turns out to be unexpectedly talented, the team's former star is determined to take Elizabeth down. And she's planning to use Maggie to do it. Worst of all, when Maggie warns her friend, Elizabeth thinks Maggie is lying out of jealousy. There goes every friend Maggie had finally made at her new school. To escape her problems for a while, Maggie decides to spend the day as Marina Tide, photogenic daughter of a world-renowned oceanographer. Unfortunately, Marina's picture-perfect world is even more dangerous than Maggie's own. How can Maggie save Marina's reputation -- and possibly life -- then turn around and save Elizabeth from impending social disaster? Especially when Maggie can't even get a handle on her own life? The third book in the series is almost as fun as the first two, with its insights into a world many middle-grade readers would love to visit if only they had magical boots of their own. Maggie is an especially fun character to travel with, as she's smart and resourceful and genuinely kind, while not being so perfect that she's unsympathetic. While both the middle school and Marina Tide plots were wrapped up a bit too quickly and easily to be completely satisfying, this was still an enjoyable read that would likely do well on many library shelves.

I've always been interested in sexuality and making love and now I finally have the time to focus on this fascinating area. The book is about how anyone can experience multiple orgasms and dramatically enhance their sexual relationship. It was great for me to read, as a woman, because it gave me so much insight into male sexuality. The fact that men are as capable of having multiple orgasms as women was, for me, awe- inspiring. And, of course, multi-orgasmic men enjoy better health, vitality and longevity!

6 of 6 people found the following review helpful. funny By Melanie H.E.H. This book is hysterically funny, but the humor is way above any 8yr old's head. My little sister got this book for christmas, and I picked it up to look at it. After only reading the first couple of paragraphs, I was laughing so hard I could barely breathe. I found myself reading the whole book through, and never really stopped laughing the entire time. I found it funny mostly because of how crazy and extreme most of the characters were, but the humor is more easily seen by an adult than a young child.

He finds one in the form of Amber, a magical mouse who quickly and literally changes Ben's life by turning him into a mouse. Together, they learn and grow in courage, resourcefulness, friendship...and of course, magic.Visual images are conjured up in the reader's mind through vivid and often humorous descriptions like this gem: "The pet shop mice had fallen asleep on a pizza, huddling together for warmth. They lay there, fast asleep, as if they were pizza toppings ordered by a cat." (pp. 213-214)This is a fun and imaginative adventure into a world of mice and magic from which the young reader will return with a sense of awe and a new respect for those small creatures we often refer to as "vermin."

Not a rehash of your typical talking magical animals on an adventure. If your family enjoys the Redwall series or similar titles then you will enjoy this. There were a few times when we backed the audio up to make sure we actually heard what we thought we heard. It would make a good movie. I can't believe this isn't more popular! The reader's voice was very enjoyable in the audio addition we found, and he did the different characters in a convincing manner. We are looking for a sequel!

Beachfront love blossoms in this refreshing summer romance, in the tradition of Sixteenth Summer and Seventeenth Summer.Mandy Sullivan isn’t exactly looking forward to the summer months as tourists invade her seaside hometown on the coast of Maine. Her best friend, Cynthia, has abandoned her for camp and her older brother just announced he’ll be staying at college taking classes for the summer, leaving Mandy with nothing to do and no one to hang out with. Hoping to keep herself busy, Mandy takes a volunteer job at the Rocky Pointe Lighthouse. On her very first day, Oliver Farmingham asks for a private tour. A new—and incredibly cute—face in Rocky Pointe, Oliver seems more interested in Mandy than the lighthouse and its history.Without her best friend at her side, Mandy is scrambling to act the right way and say the right things when Oliver is around. Cynthia—not Mandy—has always been the confident, flirtatious girl that everyone wanted to be around. As Mandy and Oliver spend more time together exploring the coast, biking through the woods, and attending the local summer festivals, their budding friendship becomes much more. But with Mandy’s insecurities creeping to the surface, can she open her heart to someone who will only be in town for three months?

From School Library Journal Gr 7–10—This series installment takes place in the small summertime tourist destination of Rocky Point, ME. With her best friend away at camp, her brother away at school, and her mother planning to have her work every day at the local historic lighthouse, Mandy is certain that the highlight of her summer will be avoiding the numerous lobster bakes around town. However, her prospects suddenly change when she meets Oliver, the grandson of the town's notorious eccentric, "Freaky" Framingham. Oliver is visiting from California with his mother and has an immediate interest in "Candy Cane," the lighthouse Mandy tends all summer long. Certain that Oliver's interest is geared only toward Candy Cane, Mandy is surprised and instantly open to Oliver's request that they work together on a float for one of the summer festivals. As they collaborate on the project at Freaky's house, Mandy and Oliver fall in love. Despite their concerns about Oliver's departure at the end of the summer, the two manage to grow closer and even accomplish a mission that winds up benefitting the whole town. The characters are almost saccharine, and their voices are a bit dated; adults are referred to as "grownups" and a bad movie as a "clunker." However, the romance is sweet, and the couple's shared mission is admirable. VERDICT This chaste romance will satisfy those looking to build their list of breezy summer beach reads for younger teens.—Lynn Rashid, Marriotts Ridge High School, Marriottsville, MD

5 of 5 people found the following review helpful. The Perfect Summer Romance! By Stephanie Ward 3.5 Stars'Swept Away' is a perfect summer read for fans of YA contemporary romance. The story follows our main character - Mandy Sullivan - as she faces a long and boring summer alone with her best friend away at camp and her brother staying at college. To help the time go by faster, Mandy takes a job at the local lighthouse. Imagine her surprise when a cute guy requests a private tour on her first day. Mandy and Oliver instantly click, and then proceed to spend more and more time together doing things they both enjoy - like biking through the woods and going to the local festivals. Mandy's doing her best to channel Cynthia's (her best friend) confidence and flirtatious personality, but as the summer progresses and Mandy's feelings for Oliver continue to grow - she'll find herself battling insecurities and trying to keep her heart and mind open to a possible relationship with someone who's only going to be in town for the summer.Although the story is pretty predictable and you basically know what's going to happen before you even open the cover - this book turned out to be a quick and sweet summer romance that had me smiling until the end. Mandy is a great main character for the story. She's kind, smart, down to earth, and a devoted daughter and friend. She has flaws like everyone else though - she's incredibly insecure (especially when it comes to guys) and lacks confidence. She starts out expecting another boring summer filled with the same routine and the same people she's known for the majority of her life. When her best friends, Sam and Cynthia, start dating, Mandy just doesn't get how they feel. She's never felt that way about anyone and now she's starting to feel like the third wheel. Then Cynthia takes off for camp and her older brother decides he's not coming home from college, Mandy's summer keeps looking dimmer and dimmer. That's when everything in the book turns around. Mandy meets Oliver - and something between them just clicks. She doesn't really know how to act around him, so she relies on how her best friend usually is around guys to help her navigate these new feelings. Mandy can feel herself falling for Oliver - but she's afraid that her heart will get broken when he leaves at the end of summer. We definitely see a lot of character growth throughout the book with Mandy's character. She starts out as a clueless girl who has never been in love, and during the story we see her grow and change in ways she never imagined. I loved watching Mandy and Oliver as they became friends and then so much more. It was sweet and honest, which made it feel incredibly realistic. The story is told from Mandy's point of view, which is perfect for the novel. We get to experience everything that happens through her eyes while getting an inside look at who she really is. We learn her hopes, dreams, fears, insecurities, and her inner thoughts and dialogue as the story goes on. By the end of the book, I felt like I really knew Mandy - which (again) made the story feel all the more authentic. Since the novel is told from the first person point of view, the pace felt effortless and the flow was completely natural. It wasn't too fast or too slow - it maintained the perfect speed for readers to know what's going on, to feel what the characters felt, and to identify and empathize with Mandy. Reading this book was like reading a journal entry from when I was a teenager in a situation like hers, which brought back a lot of different memories during the story. It also felt like Mandy was telling me personally what was going on - it was very conversational in tone, which was also a factor in immersing me into the story. As I mentioned at the beginning of this review, the plot is not unique or original, but rather predictable. The author sets it apart from the other books in the genre by having a realistic main character/narrator who pulls you inside of the story right away. I think of it kind of like watching a romantic comedy - it's obvious what the ending will be, but the reason you watch it anyways is because you want to see the events and story line that lead up to that ending. This book, along with many others in the genre, are the same as those movies - at least for me. Overall, it was a sweet YA romance that will make the perfect summer read. Definitely recommended for fans of the genre along with those who enjoy chick lit and contemporary fiction as well.Disclosure: I received a copy of the book in exchange for an honest review.

It's those cute summer reads about romance and the amazing life of a sixteenth year old. What I'll give to go to a beach like those girls and just meet cute boys. I mean, I live in California and everything, but I don't live that close to a boardwalk. The cover is also super cute. Just got to comment on that. I wonder if Simon Pulse actually gets real people to model just for this cover. The Characters/My Opinion:Okay, so moving onto the contents inside the book.Mandy Sullivan - The main character of the book was enjoyable. Her clumsy personality was cute. Although I really didn't notice her trying to change herself into someone she thinks Oliver will like until she brought it up, that doesn't seem like a healthy relationship and I'm glad everyone urged her to just be herself in the end.Oliver Framingham - For a long time, or actually just the beginning, I thought his last name was Farmingham. Okay. Random. I think it's because his name is spelled different in the blurb compared to the book. Oliver was more of a cute, nerdy summer guy. Nope, no glasses. But according to Mandy, super cute.To me, this is definitely more like a summer read. A summer fling. I don't feel the long lasting romance between myself and the book or the characters. And there's nothing wrong with that because a summer fling is cute and all.The synopsis does make the book seem like it's more about the romance than anything else, but I feel like it's more about Mandy's character building. Her semi-okay relationship with her mom definitely got better. Although there were some fights with her best friend, Cynthia, they learn to accommodate and solve the problem. Mandy's initial belief that she has to be someone different for a person to like her is changed by everyone.I did find that both Mandy and Oliver got mad at each other quite too easily. One thing I would like to be added in this novel is an epilogue. It ended with a great deal of character improvement on Mandy's side, but I feel like Mandy's and Oliver's relationship to be explained further. Hope that didn't spoil anything. The Rating: (1-10): 8.5

By Jen S Swept Away is that perfect summer read that you can toss into your beach bag.I’ve been to Maine but never to a touristy area like where the book revolves around. The constant talk of Lobster rolls definitely had me salivating. I loved the setting and I really loved how things kind of revolve around the Lighthouse fondly referred to as Candy Cane. Of course a book that takes place for just a summer is always fun as well. You don’t realize Mandy’s bad habit of conforming right away. The more she starts hanging out with Oliver you see it. I kept thinking why isn’t she telling him she doesn’t like seafood. She has this insecurity that works in a way that she doesn't put herself down but changes herself to fit in with what she thinks people want her to be. She has an outgoing best friend that it makes it easier for her to it. Being on her own this summer really kind of draws it out and she soon finds out that other people see it even if she doesn’t right away. I feel like this a common thing in life that you don’t see that often in books. It gives her character the opportunity for some big development.Oliver is so cute and nerdy. I like how into history and absorbing things he is. The fact that he loves make exact replica models makes me laugh.Mandy and Oliver together are adorable. Going through the ups and downs of their summer relationship. Especially having to deal with the fact that Oliver is going back to California at the end of it.This is definitely a cute and fun summer read when you are looking for something light and heartwarming. Plus it’s just a great setting and the Lighthouse makes for a great way to round it out.

Culver I was very pleased with Dr. Carson's first book, "Gifted Hands" and found his moving story of childhood turnaround, through the influences of his Mother, reading and God to provide refreshing proof that we can positively influence lives.Taking the time to read and understand Dr. Carson will demonstrate that he is an ordinary man like you and I, problems and all. He deals with problems and mistakes with the following philoshopy of living:T - Talents/timeH - HopeI - InsightN - NiceK - KnowledgeB - BooksI - In-DepthG - GodDo not judge this to be simplistic and trite...Dr. Carson explains with vivid examples how he utilizes this philosophy not only to live by, but to spread hope to those, like him that once had no hope in life.I highly recommend this book, not only as an inspirational story about a current day medical hero, but as a book that can provide the framework to live your life or develop strong, positvie traits in your children.Note: this book stands on its own merits and does not require previous reading from Dr. Carson's first book, "Gifted Hands". I read "Gifted Hands" shortly after reading "Think Big".

A Lewis This book was particularly interesting Dr. Carson has given us the road map to success and we should put our youth as well as ourselves on this path of achieving greatness. I admire Dr. Carson who did not let peer pressure or neighborhood gossip distract him off the path of success. When I read this book there were some things that I am going utilize such as talent, being nice, ethics, books and most importantly god on my path of success in achieving my career goals. For about a year now I have shut off my cable and every night I read after getting home from work which has made a remarkable improvement in my life.Books have become my best friend in shaping my mind and to increase my cognitive being in ways that are beyond my imagination. Whenever there is a subject that I have no knowledge of my local library has been my greatest source of information. Knowledge is power and a tool for success.

It perfectly depicts the powerful influences of our childhood and what can happen when the messeges you hear are possitive and uplifting. My wife is 3 months pregnant with my child and I intend to limit the TV time, like Dr. Carson's mother did. The books she encouraged him to read as a youngster opened up his creativity and broke down walls. I will not forget this very powerful message.

School sucks By M One thing that made me wonder when I read this back in its day was that Claudia's parents never thought to home-school her or put her in a different school or anything. She is also compared to her older (and genius) sister Janine unfairly, so when Claudia is forced to go back to the seventh grade, I was thinking, oh no. Fortunately she does well enough to eventually be able to go back to eighth grade. She is a very creative mind, and figures out a few ways to get through class.

Also in this book, we get to know Claudia's seventh grade friends better. I think it's great that Claudia's adjusted to seventh grade, and still going strong with the other members. Keep it up Ann!

PRINCE ARSLAN TAKES A STAND Though Arslan and his party have escaped Kharlan’s forces, Kharlan will stop at nothing to capture the former prince of Pars. To draw out Arslan, Kharlan has an underhanded plan to massacre innocent villagers until the prince makes his appearance, but Arslan will not stand idly by while the lives of his people are at stake, so he heads out to take on Kharlan and his army of over one thousand soldiers. Though it may seem like Arslan’s sense of justice is far from strong enough to take on Kharlan’s overwhelming military might, with Narsus’ razor-sharp wit, Daryun’s unmatched prowess as a soldier, Elam’s excellent bow skills, and the help of two new and formidable allies, Arslan has more than a fighting chance to prevail and journey closer to reclaiming his once lost kingdom.

Welcome back to Las Anclas, a frontier town in the post-apocalyptic Wild West. In Las Anclas, the skull-faced sheriff possesses superhuman strength, the doctor can speed up time, and the squirrels can teleport sandwiches out of your hands. In book one, Stranger, teenage prospector Ross Juarez stumbled into town half-dead, bringing with him a precious artifact, a power no one has ever had before, and a whole lot of trouble— including an invasion by Voske, the king of Gold Point. The town defeated Voske’s army, with the deciding blow struck by Ross, but at a great cost. In Hostage, a team sent by King Voske captures Ross and takes him to Gold Point. There he meets Kerry, Voske’s teenage daughter, who has been trained to be as ruthless as her father. While his friends in Las Anclas desperately try to rescue him, Ross is forced to engage in a battle of wills with the king himself.

There are so many characters that it is hard to keep track of the more minor ones but you do sort it out and as you read, it becomes a book very hard to put down. I was soooo sad to have finished as I felt like I had gotten to know the characters so well that I longed to know more about their lives and their adventures.

3 of 3 people found the following review helpful. I enjoyed Stranger and was excited to read the sequel By devi more I just finished reading Hostage, the second book in the series that began with Stranger. I enjoyed Stranger and was excited to read the sequel. I found the story fast paced and intriguing, especially loved the flora of this new world in which diversity flourishes in ways that are amazing and astonishing. I just loved the concept of the singing trees. And the concept of the "Change" and the prejudices of some of the people of Las Anclas about those who were changed draws a real picture of human nature and how a community must strive to see the value in diversity rather than disparage it. And, of course, that brings me to the topic of the teenagers themselves - diverse in their sexual orientations - but not really defined by them. I found that quite refreshing to see in a Young Adult novel. What stands out in both the books is that the characters are like real people that teenagers or anybody can relate to - they are full of weaknesses and full of strengths and most winningly in this book, question, consider and strive for the higher values of humanity; kindness, harmony and understanding of the differences between individuals. Each time I turned the page I would wonder what was going to happen next, and often found myself quite surprised - especially during Ross' escape after being taken prisoner by the enemy King Voske and his soldiers. The new character introduced in Hostage, the daughter of the worst tyrant possible, King Voske, is developed over the pages in an intriguing way and by the end of the story I actually found myself rooting for her although in the beginning of the story I found her quite despicable and scheming. Really a fun book to read - a real page turner and can't wait to read the next in the quartet. I think these stories would make a great movie too..

H. *NOTE - MINOR RELATIONSHIP SPOILERS IN THIS REVIEW*I liked the first book, _Stranger_, but this book really kicked things up a notch. The pace was quicker, and we're introduced to a new character, Voske's daughter, Kerry, who I really enjoyed reading about. We've still got Mia, Jennie, Yuki, and Ross as central characters, but for most of the book the group is split. Ross is a prisoner in Voske's territory of Gold Point while Kerry is being held hostage in Las Anclas. Will Ross escape Gold Point? Will Kerry betray the people of Las Anclas for her father? I was on the edge of my seat waiting to find out!I definitely appreciate the diversity of the characters, and I think it's interesting to see an openly polyamorous relationship depicted in a young adult book. I was wondering in the last book if they were going to go there, and there's no question about it by the end of this book, they went there. I don't relate to that kind of relationship, but I find it kind of refreshing change from the usual love triangles so common in YA literature. I can see this relationship being a turn off for some readers, but they probably aren't the right readers for the book anyway. They'd probably have been turned off by all the gay characters long before polyamory came into the picture.I'm (selfishly) glad the authors decided to self-publish the second book in the series because it means I got to read it very shortly after finishing the first book. I hope this means I don't have to wait too long for next two books in the series.Note: I received this book as a free ARC from one of the authors
