Part Homeless Bird and part Matched, this is a dark look at the near future told through the alternating perspectives of two teens who dare to challenge the system. In the year 2054, after decades of gender selection, India now has a ratio of five boys for every girl, making women an incredibly valuable commodity. Tired of marrying off their daughters to the highest bidder and determined to finally make marriage fair, the women who form the country of Koyanagar have instituted a series of tests so that every boy has the chance to win a wife. Sudasa, though, doesn’t want to be a wife, and Kiran, a boy forced to compete in the test to become her husband, has other plans as well. As the tests advance, Sudasa and Kiran thwart each other at every turn until they slowly realize that they just might want the same thing. This beautiful, unique novel is told from alternating points of view—Sudasa’s in verse and Kiran’s in prose—allowing readers to experience both characters’ pain and their brave struggle for hope.

From School Library Journal Gr 7 Up—In this debut novel told in alternating points of view, one in poetry and one in prose, Bodger explores a future in which gender selection in India has led to there being five boys for every girl. The prose is captivating in its authenticity, portraying Kiran's point of view very well. The poetry is appropriately jarring and nuanced, showing many aspects of Sudasa's culture and lifestyle. Sudasa is about to come of age, meaning that she, along with many other girls just like her, will watch eight boys compete for her hand in marriage. Kiran is one of those boys, but he has a plan to escape the tests, his inevitable military assignment, and the oppression of his country. Sudasa struggles against her grandmother's strong and repressive influence, while Kiran battles pressures from the other boys in his testing group. Over days of trials and judging, Sudasa comes to realize that Kiran may have another agenda besides winning her hand in marriage. Meanwhile, Kiran comes to see that Sudasa is not just a power-hungry woman looking for a male companion to obey her every wish. What these two discover puts them on the cusp of changing their worlds forever. In a not-so-distant future, readers see the possibilities of giving too much power to one gender or the other, and the negative impact that inequality can have on young people and an entire country. VERDICT An engaging dystopian novel set in India that poignantly explores gender politics.—Eden Grey, Kenton County Public Library, KY

A Book and a Hug: 5 to 1 By Molly (Conan the Librarian) A lot of girls dream about their wedding day—the dress, the celebration, the groom, the happiest day of their lives—but that’s not how it is for Sudasa. How could it be, when she is being forced to marry a total stranger at the tender age of 17?In the year 2054, one child policies in India have led to a huge disparity between the genders. Within the walled world of Koyanagar, boys are a dime a dozen. Only one girl exists for every five boys, and it’s essential to the government that all viable females marry and try to produce as many daughters as they can. In order to be sure that the country’s young women are choosing acceptable mates, boys are chosen to compete in a series of tests that determine who will earn wives and security and who will be sent to an early death defending the walls that keep them protected from the rest of the world. It’s Sudasa’s turn to preside over the Tests. Over the course of three days, it is her duty to award points to the five boys who are forced to endure different challenges to win her hand, and she recounts her experiences in lovely verse. In alternating chapters, older readers are treated to the thoughts of Contestant Five, an impoverished farm boy who is competing for Sudasa against his will. While most boys are desperate for the rare comforts that a wife can provide, Contestant Five is planning to use his competition as a chance to escape Koyanagar and find his long-lost mother. Meeting Sudasa throws everything off for his plans, though. Rather than the vapid spoiled girl he expected, he finds a gentle beauty with a love of poetry and some subversive ideas of her own.5 to 1 puts a terrific spin on the dystopian genre, and Sudasa and Contestant Five are wonderful characters who will intrigue older readers as their paths become intertwined and their lives become forever, irrevocably changed.Read alikes: The Selection by Kiera Cass; Matched by Ally CondieThis review originally appeared on ABookandaHug.com

Told in dual points of view--one in verse, one in prose--both characters are well-developed and share a part of their lives distinctly different than the other. Although this is set in the future, this "dystopian" sets it apart from others in the genre. I loved that it was set in India, and that the portrayal of this future could actually be a real possibility with the gender selection happening today.I felt like I really got to know these characters and their backgrounds--so different from each other. In a world where past gender selection has led to an imbalance in genders (5 boys for every 1 girl), the boys must compete for a wife. Sudasa, as a girl, has lived a life of privilege while Contestant 5 is merely a working boy who has to compete with four other boys to win her hand in marriage. He doesn't actually want to win a wife, and she doesn't really want a husband. They are thrown together, and as they both try to thwart the other, they see that they may have more in common than they realize. As we get to know both characters, we discover more about their families and what kind of future they both want to fight to secure. The flow of words is just beautiful! It's a fast read, but it packs quite a punch! You'll remember these characters and this world long after you close the book! Here's hoping there's a sequel!

I haven't read many books in verse so wasn't sure how I would react to the half-verse, half-prose style. But I was sucked in from the very first page. I can't say enough good things about the writing; it was so beautiful. The characters were engaging, and the plot had me flipping pages as quickly as I could. I loved, loved, loved this story, and it will stay with me for a long time. I highly recommend it to anyone who wants to be moved by a story.
