Nikki endured a life of extreme domestic violence, poverty, and sexual abuse in Southern Alabama, as her family struggled daily to survive the rage of her alcoholic father, Colby Winslow. Marie, Nikki's mother, paved a path of unbelievable strength and faith that forged a foundation of conquering forgiveness in the midst of insurmountable pain and terror. Nikki and her six young siblings lived in complete fear each day of their lives as Colby's abuse became more intense. Growing up in this atmosphere of chaos should have caused Nikki to transform into an angry, juvenile delinquent filled with hatred and bitterness. However, the faith Marie successfully implanted into her children made the absolute difference in the person Nikki became. The most difficult circumstance of Nikki's life would ultimately place Colby right in her face as she was forced to recognize what she should do---forgive.

The picture the author painted of the horror she endured is nearly impossible to wrap my mind around. Especially in a small town, right under people's noses. It makes me want to scream and rail at the injustice of it all. The fact that she was able to show real, true forgiveness just proves the point of the Cross and Jesus' ultimate sacrifice. It truly is through God and Him only that this kind of forgiveness is even possible. Lord, help me to show this kind of forgiveness to people in my own life. I pray this book will make it into the hands of people who so desperately need the message it sends.

Her writing style drew me right to the scene of the action taking place. Using vivid descriptions of the events, plus recalling dialogue family members had with one another as each violent episode unfolded, left me experiencing many emotions of my own. I was literally trying to grasp the reality of what I was reading. It is, indeed, a story of survival, but also a story of compassion offered to the one who inflicted so much pain on his family. Think about it. “Would you put a blanket over someone who passed out in a drunken rage right after he had tried to kill his family?” Nikki Brannon did, and that is just one of the many gestures of compassion shown to this man.How could she have so much compassion and forgiveness in her heart while on a roller coaster of emotions that ranged from “Love, hate, love, hate?”In Nikki’s own words from the book, she explains it well:“What love the Lord has for each one of us even for those who don’t deserve His love. I am satisfied in knowing I was used through the trials to grow and learn to forgive before it was too late. He (my father) didn’t deserve my love, compassion, sacrifice, and forgiveness. I didn’t deserve to have a Savior lay down His life for ME so that I could have everlasting life. I completely forgave, and I’m forgiven.”Today, she tells of walking in freedom, spreading her love for Jesus as an accomplished musician singing to thousands upon thousands in small churches, plus on a national stage. The next time I want to help someone hurting, I will just hand them a copy of this book. It is a must read for those struggling to overcome any type of painful situation in their lives.Lynn

Camille's Story, 1910 (Secrets of the Manor), by Adele Whitby

About the Author Adele Whitby wishes she lived in a grand manor home with hidden rooms and tucked-away nooks and crannies, but instead she lives in the next best thing—a condo in Florida with her husband and their two dogs, Molly and Mack. When she’s not busy writing, you can usually find her reading and relaxing on the beach under a big umbrella. She loves getting lost in a good story, especially one set in a faraway place and time.

Camille’s Story, 1910 I stared into the pot as the water began to boil, melting the knob of butter into a shiny yellow slick. “Now?” I asked anxiously. “Should I add the flour now?” Across the kitchen, Mama was whisking egg whites at a furious pace. “Is the butter melted, Camille?” she called. “Almost,” I replied. “Almost . . . yes!” “Good. Now add the flour all at once and stir as hard as you can. Mind the stove, now. I don’t want you to burn yourself again.” “All at once?” I repeated. “Yes. Just pour it in and begin stirring. Don’t stop until it’s come together in a thick dough.” “Yes, Mama.” I bit my tongue as I reached for the flour; Mama had helped me measure just the right amount. All at once, I reminded myself. Then I poured the flour into the pot. But I must’ve poured it a bit too fast, because a huge cloud of the stuff rose into the air! “Oh!” I cried, rubbing my powdery face. “Ah-ah-ahhhh-choo!” The scullery maids started to giggle—and who could blame them? My shenanigans at the stove were a constant source of entertainment for the entire kitchen staff. But I knew that they didn’t mean any harm by their laughter. After all, I’m sure I made a funny picture, now that my dark, chestnut-brown hair was as white as a powdered wig! “Are you all right, Camille?” Mama said. “Yes, Mama. I’m fine,” I replied as I tried not to sneeze again. I focused all my attention on stirring, stirring, stirring the gooey mix in the pot. Mama was trained as a pastry chef by her father, Alistair Beaudin, a famous chef who was known throughout all of France for his delicious desserts. The Beaudin family method for making light, delicate profiteroles was a carefully guarded secret, and just one of the reasons why Monsieur Henri and Madame Colette Rousseau had been so eager to hire Mama when she had finished her apprenticeship. Mama had been just as eager to accept their offer of employment, since she and my father, the groundskeeper at Rousseau Manor, were engaged to be married. Monsieur Henri used to joke about what a perfect match it was, bringing together two sweethearts and satisfying his sweet tooth at the same time. But he had stopped making that joke after Papa died. Mama and I still missed Papa terribly, but Monsieur Henri and Madame Colette had done everything in their power to ease our pain. Since they had no children, the Rousseaus had dedicated their ample time and fortune to helping others, including Mama and me. Just after Papa’s death, the Rousseaus had promised that they would always take care of us, no matter what. And in keeping that promise, they had earned our loyalty—for life. It was a privilege to work at Rousseau Manor, one of the grandest homes in all of France. The manor, and the estate it sat on, had been in the Rousseau family for generations. Ever since my tenth birthday almost two years ago, Mama had been trying her best to train me in the pastry arts so that I, too, could carry on the Beaudin family tradition. But despite my heritage, I was a disaster in the kitchen! Somehow, though, Mama had limitless patience with me. And if she wouldn’t give up, then I wouldn’t either. I stirred and stirred until my arm began to ache. Then, like magic, it happened: The sticky flour and buttery water combined to make a smooth, shiny dough. “Mama!” I cried. “I did it! I did it!” “Well done, Camille!” she said proudly from across the kitchen, and even the scullery maids began to applaud. I beamed with pleasure. “Now what?” I asked. “Let it rest for a few minutes to cool,” Mama told me. “Then you can add the eggs, one at a time. Twelve ought to do it. Remember to beat well after each addition, Camille. And don’t add them too soon, or else the heat from the dough will cook them.” “I won’t,” I promised. Then I ducked into the pantry for the eggs I’d gathered. Since spring had arrived, the hens had been laying even more eggs than usual; I’d already collected two large baskets and it wasn’t even noon! I wouldn’t be a bit surprised if Mrs. Plourde, the cook, decided to make a quiche for luncheon. I held out my apron skirt to make a pouch for the eggs as I counted them, one by one. As I gently placed each egg in my apron skirt, I heard a sharp voice say my name. My heart sank. I knew who it was right away: Bernadette, the head housemaid and one of the most powerful servants at Rousseau Manor. Bernadette was quick to find fault, especially with me. She was always displeased with how I folded the napkins or scoured the pans. Even my thick hair, which resisted all my efforts to stay in a tidy plait, seemed to offend her. “Camille!” she barked again. “What are you doing?” “I was—” “Dawdling, most likely.” She spoke over me with a contemptuous sniff. “As if there wasn’t enough work to be done around here.” “But—” “No excuses,” Bernadette said as she grabbed hold of my elbow and escorted me back to the kitchen. “Now, show me your task, or I’ll send you off to polish the silver.” “I’m making dough for the profiteroles,” I tried to explain as I carefully placed the eggs in a bowl. “There’s croquembouche on the menu tonight.” “Croquembouche?” Bernadette asked. She raised an eyebrow in disbelief. “And your mother trusted you with the profiteroles?” I nodded miserably. It was no secret that croquembouche, a tall tower made of airy profiteroles filled with creamy custard and held in place by a sticky caramel sauce, was one of the most challenging desserts to make. Even I had to wonder what Mama was thinking when she asked for my help. “Then you’d best get on with it,” said Bernadette. She folded her bony arms across her chest, and I could tell that she intended to watch every single thing I did. What if the dough is still too hot? I worried. I snuck a glance around the kitchen, but Mama must have stepped out. “Get on with it, I said,” Bernadette snapped. I touched the side of the pot. It still felt warm . . . but was it too warm? Oh, how I wished that Mama would return! But one look at Bernadette’s stern face told me that I didn’t dare delay. I took a deep breath and cracked an egg as carefully as I could. Even so, a fragment of the shell tumbled into the pot. I reached in quickly to retrieve it, hoping that Bernadette wouldn’t notice. But she did, of course. She noticed everything. “I cannot imagine that Monsieur Henri wishes to eat eggshells in his croquembouche,” she said pointedly. “No,” I murmured as I began to whisk the egg into the dough. I focused all my attention on the mound of dough. With each stir, the egg should’ve disappeared more and more—but instead it began to clump together. My heart sank. It was obvious even to me that I’d made a mistake and added the egg too soon. Bernadette peered into the pot. “Well, now it’s gone and curdled,” she told me. “You’ve ruined it.” Just then, thankfully, Mama returned to the kitchen. As she hurried over to us, there was hardly a trace of the limp she had from breaking her ankle last winter, but I knew Mama did everything in her power to conceal the truth: Most days her ankle hurt more than she wanted to admit. “Ahh, Bernadette, how nice to see you,” she said. “Thank you for helping Camille while I was away.” “Really, Marie, I can’t imagine what you were thinking when you let her make the profiteroles,” Bernadette said, shaking her head in disgust. “Just look at this slop! It’s hardly fit for the pigs.” A slight frown crossed Mama’s face as she looked into the pot. “The mixture was still too hot for the egg,” she remarked. “It needed more time to cool.” Oh, Mama, I didn’t want to add it! I longed to say—but I knew I had to hold my tongue. Mama must have seen the tears in my eyes because she continued in a very cheerful voice. “It’s no harm. We can start over.” “A waste of food.” Bernadette sniffed. “Camille is not experienced enough for a task like this.” “It is true that Camille is young,” Mama replied. “But I am confident that she will learn by doing. She tries very hard, you know.” “Indeed, she does!” We all turned around to see that Madame Colette had entered the kitchen. She looked beautiful, as always, with her silver hair twisted into a soft chignon at the base of her neck. Bernadette, Mama, and I all curtsied at once. “My goodness, Camille, look at you!” continued Madame Colette. “The flour on your face is enough to show me how hard you’ve been working today.” “Thank you, madame,” I said with a curtsy as Mama passed me a damp cloth to clean my face. Madame Colette glanced into the pot, but if she was dismayed to see the mess inside it, she didn’t show it. “Henri is truly looking forward to tonight’s dessert,” she said kindly. “And I know he will be even more pleased to learn that Camille helped make it. Now, Bernadette, did you need to see me?” “Yes, madame, and thank you for your time,” Bernadette replied as she led Madame Colette to her office across the hall. As soon as they were gone, I breathed a sigh of relief. “I am so sorry, Mama,” I said, gesturing to the mess in the pot. “I wanted to wait, but Bernadette—” Mama shook her head. “No apologies necessary, Camille,” she said in a gentle voice, but I could see that she was upset. “I can imagine what happened. It’s no trouble to start again. Do you remember what to do?” “Yes.” “Then go ahead and get started. You’ll do fine,” Mama said with an encouraging smile. She picked up the pot. “I’ll take this out to the pigs.” As I began to measure more water into another pot, I realized that Bernadette had left her office door open. I could clearly hear every word of her conversation with Madame Colette. How odd, I thought. Bernadette always shuts her door. I tried not to eavesdrop, but it was impossible to ignore them as they chatted about Rousseau Manor’s staffing needs. Then Bernadette said something that caught my attention. “I am afraid, madame, that I must ask of you a very special favor.” “Of course, Bernadette,” Madame Colette replied. “You may go ahead.” “It is about my cousin, Philippe Archambault,” Bernadette continued. “He and his family lived near the river before the flood. They lost . . . everything.” Madame Colette said nothing, but I could picture the look of concern that had surely crossed her face. All through last summer and fall, into the winter, the rain had poured—more rain than anyone could remember falling before. By the time January arrived, bringing with it even more rainstorms, the River Seine had begun to rise. The sodden ground could hold no more water, and it oozed up through pipes and drains, until nearly all of Paris was flooded. In some places, all that could be seen were the tops of the trees! It was a slow flood; the muddy water rose with the pace of molasses, providing enough time for most Parisians to escape to higher, dryer ground. To many people who lived on country estates at the edges of the city, the flood was a marvelous spectacle to gawk at. They traveled to the heart of Paris just to see the buildings underwater, the rickety bridges that supported daring escapes, and the fireboats sailing down streets where horses used to pull buggies alongside clattering automobiles. The Rousseaus, however, would never be so coarse as to enjoy the misfortune of others. At news of the first survivors to escape from the flooded city, they had opened the doors of Rousseau Manor, welcoming as many people as the servants’ quarters could hold. Yes, it was crowded; yes, the workload had never been greater (especially for those of us in the kitchen); but I couldn’t have been more proud of Monsieur Henri and Madame Colette. Their generous spirits were an inspiration to us all. “How can I help?” Madame Colette asked Bernadette. “Might there . . . be room for them here?” “I would love to offer them our hospitality, of course,” Madame Colette said right away. “But we are already filled to capacity.” She sighed heavily. “How many? Your cousin and his wife?” “Yes. And their two children. Please, madame, they have been living in a church—” “Bernadette, you need not plead their case to me. I have the greatest sympathy for those who lost everything to the flood waters,” Madame Colette interrupted gently. “But I don’t know where we could house an entire family.” “What about the groundskeeper’s cottage?” Bernadette suggested. I clapped my hand over my mouth in surprise. The groundskeeper’s cottage? That was where Mama and I lived! Of course I knew it was a luxury—a true indulgence—that the Rousseaus had allowed us to stay there even after Papa died. And I knew that we had no right to expect such wonderful accommodations—a cheerful two-bedroom cottage with its very own kitchen, separate from the manor, when the rest of the staff shared rooms in the attic. But that little cottage was our home. It was the only home I had ever known. Just then Mama returned from the courtyard. “Camille, I—” she began to say. But I held a finger to my lips before she could continue. “The estate needs a full-time groundskeeper again, madame,” Bernadette pressed. “It has been too long. Marcel tries his best, but he comes only twice a week. The neglect of the gardens and the orchards has begun to show. My cousin Philippe would be honored to tend them. He would care for these grounds as if they were his very own. And his son is nearly full-grown! If you bring them to Rousseau Manor, it would be like hiring two groundskeepers.” “I see.” “Not to mention, his wife, Élise, is a fine cook. She has even worked in a restaurant.” Bernadette continued earnestly. “She would welcome the chance to serve in the kitchens. Why, perhaps Élise could be responsible for cooking meals for the staff! We both know that the kitchen staff has been terribly taxed by preparing all the additional meals for our guests. And Philippe’s daughter is as sweet as could be. I tell you, madame, that my cousin and his family would prove themselves to be a great asset here. Any kindness you showed them would be repaid many times over.” There was a long pause. “Please,” Bernadette finally said. “I never ask for special consideration, madame. But this is my family. My flesh and blood. I cannot bear to think of them spending one more night on the streets—” “Of course, Bernadette. Say no more,” Madame Colette interrupted her. “Please tell your cousin that he is welcome at Rousseau Manor, and I am sure that he will make a fine groundskeeper. You’re right. It has been too long.” “And the cottage?” “Yes,” Madame Colette replied. “They will be able to move in shortly. I hope they will find it quite comfortable.” Bernadette did not respond. Or perhaps she did and I couldn’t hear her because I was so stunned that nothing else mattered in that moment: not the daunting croquembouche waiting to be made; not the pigs outside, gleefully eating the dough I’d ruined; and not the flour that had drifted out of my hair and into my eyes, making them smart. No, there was only one thing I could think about in that moment: Where were Mama and I going to live?

Pakkun the Wolf and His Dinosaur Friends, by Yasuko Kimura

From School Library Journal K-Gr 3—In the topsy-turvy world of Pakkun the Wolf and his friends, the Land of Dinosaurs is a place below the world's surface, and a quick tumble takes Pakkun there (and back again). When one of Mrs. Hen's eggs rolls out of the nest, Pakkun offers to find it and tumbles head-over-heels through a cave-filled passageway. In the Land of Dinosaurs, he meets a new friend, Ptera, a pteranodon, who offers to help. They travel through deserts and oceans, past jungles and smoking volcanoes. At one point, Ptera's mother offers them a ride on her back. They meet a tyrannosaurus and an "always hungry" creature called Karaurus; Pakkun bares elongated fangs and scares him away. Long-necked Mrs. Saurapod suggests they try the Valley of Dinosaur Eggs, and there they find the tiny egg among many others. All of the eggs hatch, and Pakkun takes Mrs. Hen's chick home. Kimura's cartoon illustrations abound with whimsical details. Small, brown-furred Pakkun resembles a dog with a wide tuft of hair, close-set eyes, and large whiskery snout. Other animals including Mrs. Hen and Ptera, have large googly eyes. Even the fiercest animals are helpful: "Mr. T-Rex" interrupts his fight with a duck-billed dinosaur to respond politely to Ptera and Pakkun's inquiry. VERDICT Even if your shelves are crowded with dinosaur stories, this unconventional tale will captivate a wide range of readers, young and old.—Marilyn Taniguchi, Beverly Hills Public Library, CA

Review "Children who dote on silly, googly-eyed monsters need look no further than this imported tale of a wolf chasing an errant chicken egg." —Kirkus Reviews"Even if your shelves are crowded with dinosaur stories, this unconventional tale will captivate a wide range of readers, young and old." —Marilyn Taniguchi, School Library Journal

She laid her eggs and one of them rolled down a hole and she is unable to retrieve it. Little Pakkun the Wolf to the rescue! He disappears down the hole as quick as lightning on a rescue mission, but to his great surprise this is not an ordinary hole. Whatever has he gotten himself into?He discovers it is a land of Dinosaurs. He can't believe this! Who would have thought that this even existed? He makes friends with Ptera, a very tiny and unusual looking creature, and together they search high and low to find that roll-away egg. They comb every square inch of dinosaur land but to no avail, could there be more places that they have overlooked? Many pre-historic critters help them along the way and finally the best clue is given to them by an amiable Sauropod. She tells them to go and scour the Valley of Dinosaur Eggs because it possibility could have landed there. Mmmmm... I wonder if they finally will secure that tiny egg and return it back to it's rightful home and to its anxious, worried mother? Miracles can happen can't they? The illustrations are truly amazing. They are colourful, packed full of action and imagination. The creative characters are loveable and the whole sense of lending a helping hand to someone in need and enjoying diverse friendships certainly shines through. The message is positive and the actions of the characters are noble and heartwarming. I highly recommend this book.

This isn’t your average dinosaur story, it’s a tale that takes you on a surreal journey with Pakkun the wolf as he roams the world of the dinosaurs. What I like is that this isn’t a typical dinosaur story, the illustrations are nothing i’ve seen before and the story is captivating.I’m a big fan of this classic book- hope you enjoyed it as much as we did.

The AmerIcan Dream is at once an inspiring account of a young mans journey from defendant to defense attorney, a window into the inner workings of one of Miami s most notorious drug rings, and a chilling portrait of the streets that Americas poverty-stricken youth call home. The hood is an addiction. An addiction that pulls as seductively and fiercely as the drugs hustled on its streets. And living in it is a daily exercise in survival. Raised impoverished in the streets of Miami, David Lee Windecher was only eleven years old when he was arrested for shoplifting. It didn't seem like a big deal at the time, deciding to take what he believed he deserved. But that was the beginning for David. That was the day he started thinking like a hustler. He could stop waiting for the scales to tip in his favor. He could stop going without. He could take what life denied him. And he did. For the next seven years, David fought bitterly against his circumstances at the side of his gang-affiliate brothers. It began with selling dope to help his family eat, but pulled into the dark, seductive life of violence, drugs, money, and notoriety David lost himself to the game. Before he turned eighteen, he had built and masterminded a crime ring, had been arrested thirteen times, and fought daily wars against rival gangs and dirty cops. But deep inside of David, an idealistic boy still dreamed of becoming an attorney and fighting for justice despite race. He was just waiting for someone to believe he existed.

The American Dream: HisStory in the Making, by David Lee Windecher

Review “There are storytellers and then there are those whose lives tell a story. “The AmerIcan Dream” grabs you from the beginning and immediately transports you to a reality beyond your imagination. David Windecher bravely narrates his life story with unparalleled honesty and unabashed emotion leaving the reader lamenting David’s mistakes, grieving for his heartbreaks and rejoicing in his achievements. “The AmerIcan Dream” is an awakening for us all.” -Ozzie Areu, President, Tyler Perry Studios"Inspired and chilling by turns... Windecher paints an unflinching portrait of what it's like to be poor, young and tempted by easy money." -Ana Veciana-Suarez, The Miami Herald “It’s a coming of age story about perseverance and survival in the face of abject adversity and poverty. It’s a story of redemption and salvation. It’s a story of hope.” - Bonnie Berman, Host, "Topical Currents," WLRN-FM, NPR Miami"David Lee Windecher is truly an inspiration to anyone facing serious life challenges. The AmerIcan Dream: HisStory in the Making is a piercing account of life on the streets and the frustrations facing today's impoverished youth. This book is a celebration of beating the odds and taking charge of one's destiny" - Sherry Boston, Solicitor-General of DeKalb County " 'The AmerIcan Dream' is a powerful testimonial of the emotional strength and guidance derived from one's faith in God. David recounts his life story with heart breaking, yet encouraging honesty. Too many children are left to navigate the dangerous streets of America's poor neighborhoods. This book opens the window and allows every reader a peek into this dark world and likewise gives us a greater understanding of the challenges facing today's impoverished youth. I believe in my heart it is the duty of every Christian to behold this knowledge and understand that there is hope for everyone. It is through galvanizing stories like David's we will come to understand this hope and begin to help bring the light of the Lord to those in need." -Michael Cox, Lead Pastor of Cornerstone Church, Anniston, Al.

It is a powerful story of a young man that had the wrong cards delt to him, but with the support of a good family, perseverance and will to never give up, was able to turn his life around and become a productive member of society. It takes you into the mindset of a gangster and gave me a perspective on life that I would have never been able to achieve on my own. Every American, especially those that have have run-ins with the law, should be required to read this book. It is beautifully written and made me feel that I actually was a gang member, living in Miami, hustling my way through life. Anyone that has ever said "I cant " about anything needs to read this book. There were moments I cried, cheered, cursed, but mostly felt an overwhelming sense of pride towards the main character in this book, David- who time and time again gets knocked down but keeps getting back up.I would not be surprised if this book makes it on the NY Times best-seller list.

It is truly amazing to see how God moved and molded David into the man that he is today. I read the book in 1 day! Once I started, I couldn't stop reading. I have faced David in the courtroom, so I knew how the story was going to end. But it was a blessing for me to see how he did not let anything defeat him. Not his friends, circumstances, obstacles, poor decisions, or even himself. There are so many people out there who have not been able to overcome obstacles similar to those that David overcame. I pray that David uses his gifts and his testimony to be an agent of positive change. He does not have to do it alone. Buy the book. Read the book. Share the book. Much respect DLW.-Christian

A Brilliant, Inspiring Story Everyone Can Benefit From By John A Faber At a quick glance, David Lee Windecher’s book, “The AmerIcan Dream: HisStory in the Making," seems to be like any of our culture’s great “rags-to-riches” narratives. From empire-building Oprah Winfrey’s early childhood years of wearing potato sack dresses, to coffee tycoon Howard Schultz growing up in the projects, to billion-dollar hairstylist mogul John Paul Deojoria living in his car, Windecher’s book would appear to have all the ingredients of another classic “feel good” story. And yet, there is so much more in terms of grit, character, and depth to this book. The first half of Windecher’s saga descriptively portrays the early part of his life growing up in the “hood." From stealing cars, to selling drugs, to gangsta fights, to mere survival, the reader becomes well-acquainted with this time in North Miami Beach. The second half of the book focuses on Windecher’s personal change from “rule-breaking thug” to “law-abiding attorney.” The metamorphosis was anything but easy. Moreover, the essence of “transformation” would not even come close to the will power it took for Windecher to become the man he is today. It is my hope that this book will not become shelved in public libraries or lost in the digitized world of the cloud. “The AmerIcan Dream” will make a wonderful high school English book to teach the principles of justice, resilience, and transcendence. God Bless America for giving David Lee Windecher the opportunity of a lifetime. May he continue to make this world a better place. I highly suggest you read this book. You will not be disappointed!

A Home for Abigail: Everyone Needs a Forever Home, by S. Marriott Cook

Review I found this to be a heartwarming story that both children and adults could really enjoy. Reading about the rough life Abigail endured, just tore at my heart. I wanted her to find her forever home and learn that people could love her unconditionally. What I also found fabulous was that Ms. Cook illustrated this story herself with paintings she created to accompany the storyline. I feel this would make a great book to read to your children or to have them even read it to you. Abigail is one special dog and children will love reading her special story! -  by  Diana Coyle for Night Owl Reviews

A children's book, yes, but adults as well will love this precious story, character development, beautifully descriptive illustrations throughout, and thoroughly polished presentation. The author incorporates important lessons about pet adoption and care, gently and convincingly—with the pets' point of view too. I imagine every animal shelter, rescue organization and vet who sees it will want copies in their reception areas. Every parent with a child who likes animals will want a copy. It is sure to be a favorite. It helps that the book is written and illustrated by one who clearly has a deep passion for the subject, intimate knowledge of the characters, and creative artistic gifts to share the story. Hate to be redundant, but this book is a masterpiece.

All animal lovers will love learning about Abigail's story and the friends and family she meets in her journey. The many beautiful illustrations show the love the author has for her animals. Abigail's story brings home the importance of proper care for animals. I'm hoping this author writes more books for us to enjoy!

0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. Excellent. By Robin Forte' There are many books about dogs but this is a book written by a dog. Well, sort of. Abigail, the dog (and author), did have some human help in telling her story - with typing and spelling and things like that.A touch of Disney, a touch of Alice in Wonderland, a touch of Santa Claus, a touch of the good Samaritan, a touch of Lassie and a touch of class (I couldn’t help myself) – this book will touch you and warm the cockles of your heart. As you read this book and become friends with Abigail the sweet, white, Lab-like-mutt, you will have a much better understanding of what your animals are telling you with their soulful eyes, their sloppy licks and their wagging tails. Great for kids and adults. It will make you feel good and soften your heart.

Sexual dysfunction in marriage is a big topic that no one wants to talk about and, while there are many long volumes on sex and intimacy, there are no books that were written with the express purpose of assisting couples in conversing about their sex lives. This book fills a much-needed void that is, perhaps, most appreciated by the counselors and pastors trying to facilitate conversation between a husband and wife about the more difficult sexual issues.   In their own practices, Dr. Hague and Mr. Smith individually sought a resource that would help their patients have meaningful discussions about sex. When they conversed about mutual patients and how best to assist them, they found no publication that approached difficult subjects with the goal of opening lines of communication between husband and wife.  It was out of a desire to assist their patients that this book was written. www.BoldSpeak.net Neil and Dr. Melissa Hague have a passion for helping others to promote healthy marriages and families. Through her obstetrics and gynecological practice, Dr. Hague has the unique opportunity to see the frustration and strife that sexual difficulty can cause for women and their marriages. Communicating about the underlying issue or condition is paramount to resolving sexual dysfunction in marriage. Dr. Hague has helped many women, their husbands and their marriages, and based on these experiences she established a sexual dysfunction clinic in her medical practice. Dr. Hague and her husband sense a great need to address the often unspoken topic of sexual issues and co-wrote Start Talking: Intimacy to help couples talk about their sex lives as a vital and important part of a healthy marriage. James and Julie Smith have a heart for counseling couples to help them navigate issues that often arise in every marriage. James, a licensed marriage and family therapist, sees sexual issues in marriage far too often and understands why couples would have a hard time starting the conversation about their sex lives. While many concerns can arise in marriage, sex is deceptively often a cause of a number of those other issues; James co-wrote Start Talking: Intimacy as a resource for his patients and other couples to sort through what is often an underlying problem thereby leading to quality enhancement in other aspects of marriage.

Pirates Don't Knit! : Children's Book: Funny Rhyming Bedtime Story - Picture Book / Beginner Reader, About Being Yourself (Ages 3-7) (Top of the Wardrobe Gang Picture), by Melinda Kinsman

Review    "Kinsman's illustrations are bright and filled with charm...I love hunting down the rodent in each picture and watching the black cat react to the other characters and situations. The pictures do an exceptional job of telling the story...It's important that children are exposed to celebrating individuality at a young age and Pirates Don't Knit is a great way to do that."- Littlest Bookshelf Reviews"wonderfully illustrated... Children will not only love to read this story, but they will be thoroughly engaged and entertained from cover to cover."- Readers' Favorite Book Reviews - 5 stars

About the Author

Melinda Kinsman lives on a small peninsular called The Wirral, in North West England. She loves climbing mountains and rock-climbing (both abroad, and in her local mountains of Snowdonia), and she has always had a soft-spot for cuddly toys!

As Melinda has to lie down a lot each day, due to health issues, she spends most of that time using her iPad to write and illustrate her books. (Drawing can be especially challenging, as she needs to keep the iPad steady by balancing it with one leg up in the air - much to the amusement of her family!)

Melinda originally wrote a book of poems for her 6 year old niece a few years ago, but never dreamt of trying to publish them, or of trying to illustrate them herself. The advent of ebooks and handheld tablets now makes self-publishing an exciting possibility for her!

The Top of the Wardrobe Gang series of books are credited to both Melinda and a motley crew of cuddly toy characters. This bunch of cuddly toys live on the Top of the Wardrobe - they like to call this the "penthouse suite"! They enjoy reading, and want to try writing their own books. Most of the cartoon gang characters are based on "real" members of Melinda's cuddly toy family.

You can find out more about Melinda, the gang, and their books from their website at http://topofthewardrobegang.weebly.com

I particularly like the story in this one about a young pirate named Jim, who doesn't fit his stereotype. He would much rather knit than do pirate things and the results of his ventures, including knitting bears in different colors for the whole crew are quite hilarious! I was laughing out loud throughout the story.Jim's talent is thought to be nothing more than an amusement to the rest of the crew. They don't see the need for it. That is until the crew finds an infant who doesn't have a mother. As they raise the baby, Jim knits clothes for him. And eventually Jim's mother comes aboard and teaches the pirates a thing or two about motherhood. This is a warm, funny story that teaches kids that being different can come in handy. And it does so in a very light-hearted and unique way! I'd give it 5 million stars if I could.

You cannot expect me to like a book about knitting pirates. EXCEPT ... The entire concept and execution of this book is marvelous and magnificent. Introduced to the Top of the Wardrobe Gang, my inner child demanded to join the reading circle. When told about the rascally rodent, I was ready to hunt. And then we went to sea. I was not thrilled about the knitting pirate, because I recognized myself, but if this is not the precise purpose of a Children's Book, I don't know what is. So much to compliment and admire in this small book: the illustrations are fantastic, detailed, engaging, and carry most of the load for telling a most instructive tale; the rhymes are deceptively simple and compelling; the humor had this old man laughing right along with his inner child; and finally: I LOVED THE CAT!!! I should be embarrassed, but I'm not. The book is meant for children, and it is perfect. But should some oldster see this, thinking why don't pirates knit? Well find yourself a corner, join the gang ... and sit.

He is not your typical pirate! He makes hats, long beards and clothes! The adventure continues as a baby is found. His mother helps the other pirates to learn things to help the baby too!Jim and his fellow pirates end up learning how to take care of each other, their ship and their little visitor! Great illustrations allow the kids to retell the story too!Great adventures while knitting!!!

Excellent book on a previously taboo subject.I like the boldness of the author to come out and bring this subject into book form. The book was good in that it covered do"s and don"t"s on this topic.Often we don"t want to talk about this subject but it is through a book like this that communication can improve. It was funny seeing some of the description in this book because usually language and slang like this is not recorded. The author definitely has a passion for helping couples and that is commendable.I recommend this book for all couples who are wanting to enhance their relationship.

Some you may not agree with – I’m not a fan of total honesty – but there are many invaluable suggestions. It also provided the knowledge on key points of foreplay acts that will make your toes curve. The book is worth buying. For people who are open minded and willing to learn the act of dirty talk to help your sex life.

Spice it up with creative, outright suggestive dirty talk and rejuvenate your sex life. Not 50-shades of gray, but it doesn't have to be. The power of suggestive language is as much a mind game as it is physical. Interesting book - I thought the scavenger hunt particularly fun. Good stuff - take the boredom out of the bedroom with some dirty talk.

Ink and Ashes, by Valynne E. Maetani

From School Library Journal Gr 7 Up—Mystery lovers won't be able to put down Maetani's smartly written debut. Claire Takata hardly remembers her father, who died when she was a child, but when she finds an old letter of his, she realizes her mother and stepfather have hidden crucial details about their past. In digging for answers, she discovers her ordinary suburban Utah family may have yakuza ties that could put them all in grave danger. Suddenly, she's being trailed by an unfamiliar black SUV and receiving coded messages only understood by those who know Japanese customs—four white chrysanthemums signifying death and her name written in red ink. Claire also deals with more typical high school concerns as she faces growing feelings for her best friend, Forrest. Readers will fall for him too, as well as the rest of Claire's close-knit group of friends who bring humor and warmth to the suspenseful narrative. The authentic portrayal of Claire's Japanese American family, only partially in touch with their heritage, will resonate with many teens who straddle multiple cultures, and Claire herself is a breath of fresh air. Athletic and resourceful, she is determined to solve this mystery on her own terms, confronting her mother and stepfather directly with questions, reporting suspicious happenings to the authorities, and talking openly with her friends about her alarming discoveries. VERDICT This thoroughly engaging tale in the tradition of Nancy Drew or Veronica Mars ends on a satisfying note, but readers will hope for a sequel because it's just that good. Ed. note: See SLJ's Q&A with the author on p. 10.—Allison Tran, Mission Viejo Library, CA

There are so many awesome things to say about this book that I'm not quite sure where to start. I picked this for a diverse read. I that I was going to be getting a good story since it was published by Tu Books. (In case you didn't know, Tu Books focuses on diverse young adult science fiction.)This was a great glimpse in Japanese culture. This had depth, meaning and connection. ot was wan't overwhelming , but it also didn't feel as if it was just placed in the story as window dressing. This actually had everything that I could want in a good book: characters that I liked and cared about, suspense and mystery that had me guessing all the way to the end, great pacing for the story and a heroine that I could believe in.Claire Takata was not perfect, but, I think that is what made her character so believable. She was a bit whiny, and I hate to admit it, but most girls have thier whiny moments. She was also strong, brave and very capable of taking care of herself. Her position of being the only girl in a group of boys was fitting, somehow.Lately, I've been having trouble with romance in YA, but I am glad to say that it worked in this book. Not everything that happened was your run of the mill stuff. And everything wasn't wrapped up nice and neatly. But... every question was answered, even if it was complicated.Even though I focused on Claire, the other characters were well thought out and developed. They had their own quirks and endearing charms. I really enjoyed this work, and will be looking forward to more from this author.

Awesome Boys, Strong Girl By Suey Short Synopsis: When Claire discovers a letter hidden away addressed to her new dad, from her old dad (who is dead), she thinks, what is up? She had no idea that her fathers knew each other. She starts looking into it, asking questions, making phone calls and generally digging into things she's not supposed to. Pretty soon, her life is being threatened and she's not sure what the connection is. Just that there is one. Her brothers and her best friends that are boys help her along the way.My Response: So, I really enjoyed the character bits and the relationships and the connections in this one. I enjoyed all the boys. Boys are awesome. I really love boys. These guys reminded me of the crowd in the Raven Boys books. Only different. But similar. Anyway. But the mystery aspects of this story had me glazed over. You know I'm not a big mystery fan! And yeah, it shows when we have our characters looking up stuff and trying to figure out stuff and I'm all, yeah, okay... on with the story!!Bottom Line: If you love mysteries, especially ones laced with a bunch of cool Japanese culture, you'll dig this book. If you love boys working with one strong girl, you'll also love this book! Put the two together and you have it made!

By Don Marske A fun and intriguing account of a young Japanese girl and her brazen investigation into her patient and understanding stepfather's secret life in the yakuza (Japan's organized crime) and his relationship with her deceased and revered father. She engages her siblings and close friends in her investigation which raises the tension. The story also makes several references to Japanese cultural customs.
