Take a Chance on Love (Hawk Point Romances Book 1), by Christi Williams

From the Author Take a Chance on Love is the first installment in the Hawk Point Romances series.Excerpt from an interview on Jamallah Bergman's blog, Stories of Love and Romance:Can you tell us about this publication?      The blurb to Take a Chance on Love: When Chancie de Leur meets highway patrol trooper Micah Taylor one frosty Wyoming night, instant sexual heat kindles between them. Chancie's a lonely young widow who owns her own business and Micah is divorced, so there shouldn't be anything holding them back. But Micah wonders if Chancie's obvious wealth might become an issue, or the fact that she's apparently the second woman in his life who has zero interest in ever having his baby.      Micah has no idea of the real problem between him and Chancie, until he meets her son. Ten-year-old Jamie de Leur is determined to break up his mom and her lawman, and Micah questions whether any relationship with Chancie is worth dealing with the spoiled kid she's raising.     In a showdown over Jamie breaking the law, Micah has to decide if he wants to be Chancie's cop--or her family man. What inspired you to write your latest publication?  Where did the idea come from?      I went on a college field trip to a local coal mine. We toured the reclamation area and I got fascinated by the job of environmental services officer. I thought a woman could easily do that, working to protect raptors, and the story for the next book in the Hawk Point Romances, Perilous Promises, took off from there. Who is your favorite character in your latest publication and why?       Oh, I'm totally in love with Micah Taylor, the Wyoming Highway Patrol Trooper who is the hero of Take a Chance on Love. Why? I made him up, so he's everything I ever dreamed of in a man. Smart and sexy and tough and tender. He has horses, so he's got cowboy attributes, but he's a steely cop who falls in love fast!

About the Author     Christi Williams is the author of two novels and a novella in the Hawk Point Romances series.Take a Chance on Love is the story of the chance encounter of widow Chancie de Leur and hot Wyoming Highway Patrol trooper Micah Taylor. Perilous Promises is Perris and Noah Dalton's story of recovery from breast cancer and the effort to revive their formerly wonderful marriage. The novella Clay's Quest is the tale of a hot Wyoming cop who comes up with a wacky plan to save his marriage when he just won't accept that his beautiful wife wants to find someone else to father her baby. "To the One I Never Forgot" is a short story that launches the Wyoming Series of contemporary Western romances. Gianna and Zack were too young for love when they were separated. Now, all grown up, can Gianna be reunited with the one she never forgot? Next in the Wyoming Series is Getting It Right. Sometimes it takes a little magic.   Keep up with Christi's new books on Facebook at facebook.com/writerchristi, at Google+ at plus.google.com/115004177939810526784, on Twitter at twitter.com/WriterChristi, and on her blog at writerchristi.blogspot.com/

Just open up and let the warm and fuzzies take over. But it's not that simple. There's fear, rejection, difference of opinion. It's all so risky.Chancie de Leur is a single mother running her own business. It's been two years since her husband died and she's feeling a bit lonely.Micah Taylor is a Wyoming State Trooper. He shows up at Chancie's business to complete his routing drug testing. There's an instant attraction. Micah and Chancie end up going out for dinner after Micah's shift ends. The attraction grows bolder. When Chancie finally tells her ten year old son, Jamie, about Micah, he's horrified his mother would consider dating anyone, much less a COP! Jamie's behavior continues on a downward spiral. When Micah and Jamie finally meet the hostilities and tension between them are at war-zone level! Micah does everything he can to win over Jamie. Nothing works. Micah realizes that no matter how much he cares about Chancie, he can't be with her if Jamie continues the war tactics. Their relationship would never work. What's a girl to do?I loved this story from the very beginning. There were no earth shattering revelations (although Chancie's marriage was unconventional, to say the least!), no kidnappings, no exes to come barreling in causing problems. It's just the story about a boy (man) and a girl (woman). The story of how two people, both burned in the past, are willing to take a chance on love when the right person crosses their path.I loved that Chancie and Micah are ordinary people with ordinary jobs. I love that they're not fresh faced new adults (although I do love those stories). It was nice to have a real-life love story.Chancie and Micah were so neat. While neither one is in the fresh bloom of adulthood they did act like teenagers. Necking in the car, sneaking around, getting busted (not by parents, but by the ten-year old son!). I think I laughed so hard when they got busted by Jamie when they were necking in the kitchen. I giggled and giggled when that happened. I know exactly how they felt! This is author Christi Williams debut novel. She did an amazing job giving us a real-life love story full of passion, romance and the perfect man. We should all be so lucky to find our very own Micah!I received a copy of this book from the author in exchange for an honest review.

Her own sexy cowboy.."Take a Chance on Love was a refreshingly different kind of love story.Micah was a regular working guy... a very hot, 33 year old, divorced, highway trooper to be specific and Chancie was a 30 year old business owner with a 10-year old son.So, anyway..Micah and Chancie meet one night.. both on the job. You see, Chancie owned Screening Services, and Micah, for his job, had to go get tested.Right away they both felt an incredible yet surprising attraction, so what did they do? They quickly began dating.. and when I say quickly, I mean like that same night. Due to Micah's work schedule, their dates had to be past midnight. You'd think they'd have sex right off the bat, especially with their dates being so late.. but no. Micah, even though he wanted nothing more than to get Chancie in his bed, he let her set the pace for their new relationship."I'm killing myself to hold back, only because of you. Because you're so damned important to me. I don't want to make a mistake.""I just want you so much"I was really rooting for Chancie and Micah. They both came from broken marriages, so I felt like they deserved to be in a happy relationship for once. But no.. it couldn't be that simple now, could it? Chancie's son, Jamie was one tough ten year old boy. I did not know kids that age could be so damn mean and just spiteful!!! But Jamie? He sure got that down.. He made no mistake in letting Chancie and Micah know he did NOT approve of their relationship... and that he pretty much hated Micah. The fact that Chancie spent so much time on the road doing job-related things, her mother-son relationship had already been strained since the beginning and adding Micah to the equation just made things worse."She was almost bankrupt in more ways than one."That quote right there explains it perfectly, really. Every thing seemed to be falling apart. From her job, to her family, to her relationship. Chancie had finally found someone to be truly happy with, but Jamie stood in the way of that. Of course, there's a reason behind Jamie's troublesome attitude.. which kinda broke my heart. But still, he was one huge pain in the...!"I don't know where we stood. You and me, especially after the other night. So I didn't talk much about the future.""Maybe it's time to face the fact that we don't have a future, Chancie."Micah, obviously had his reservations towards his relationship with Chancie because of Jamie. He'd already suffered through one divorce, so why go through all the pain again? As Micah saw it, she'd never choose him over her son.. not that he'd ever ask her to.Like I said, I was really rooting for Micah and Chancie, so seeing how things kept getting in their way, made me kinda antsy.I really liked the ending, though I wish the Epilogue would've been a tad longer. I felt like it was a bit too summarized. It just mentioned certain important things in their lives which I really would've loved to read more about.Overall, I liked Christi Williams' writing style.. her book just had a smooth and natural flow. I even found myself smiling through some of the witty comments made. The sole reason why I can't give this book the complete 5 stars is because even though I did enjoy the story line, I never really fully connected with it. But that's the only thing really.'Take a Chance on Love' is a good book, so if you're in the mood for a light and yet at times, angsty romance, then this is the book for you."..true love overcomes all obstacles."A copy of "Take a Chance on Love" was given in exchange for an honest review, Thanks Christi! :)

Take A Chance On Love By Tala This is a sweet love story that tackles the issues of being a single parent finding love, abuse, and trying to create a new family. These were handled very well and the book was very well written, it's refreshing to read something that has actually been edited.Chancie has so many things to deal with, her deceased husband was emotional abusive and she married at such a young age. When she meets Micah she's scared to open up, but when she does there's no going back for her. Chancie is a very strong woman with a soft center. She needs the love Micah has to give her, but they have to fight her son the whole way. I do mean fight, but I won't go into detail and spoil it for you.Micah is a tough cop that was hurt in the past and will never admit he's a bit afraid to try again. He loves Chancie, but won't jump in all the way due to this fear and her son. I love the way he lets Chancie take the lead and set the pace at first. He's an alpha male that is oh so very tender and a wonderful lover. I wouldn't pass up the chance to have a Micah of my own.Overall this is a true love story about two people finding each other and dealing with their individual issues and what it takes to make it work. They have a bit more of a struggle due to a child being in the picture, and boy did I really dislike Jamie in the beginning. As with the other characters, Jamie grows throughout the story and I began to see and understand his true issues. By the end of the book I was very proud of his growth and maturity.I recommend this to anyone looking for a sweet read with little angst. I really liked the fact that no one was being chased or in danger of being killed. I got to just relax and take the journey with the rest of the characters.

By Delinik21 Drop the Puck: It's Hockey Season (The Official Adventures) is a great early reader book with an amazing message. From the beginning of this book (A Note from Jayne & Katrina), I knew that it was going to be a good read for young children. The author took the time to explain a genetic disorder that a character has in a way that was easy to understand for young children. They also stated that if a child needed help understanding or had questions, there was an email address that they could contact with their parents/guardians. Not too often, inside of the book, do you see contact information for those who created the book. The illustrations are fantastic! They are colorful, creative, and really make you fall in love with the story and the characters. The message is one that we all need to learn in life and apply daily. Thank you to the author and illustrator for creating such an inspirational and heart-warming story with lovable characters. I look forward to more books like this to share with those little ones I love. Thank you!

This funny fairy-tale adventure from debut author Sarah Courtald is the story of two very different sisters-Eliza, who longs to ride into battle against villains and dragons, and Lavender, who would give anything to be a pampered princess. Before the end of the story both of them have had a chance to fulfill their dreams, though not quite in the way they intended...

Accompanied by their depressed goat, Gertrude, with their granny's warnings about the Black Death ringing in their ears, they head out into the forest and come face to face with an evil count who definitely does not have their best interests at heart.

Buckle and Squash: The Perilous Princess Plot, by Sarah Courtauld

From School Library Journal Gr 3–5—This cross between a fractured fairy tale and any of Roald Dahl's zany adventures is the first installment in the "Buckle and Squash" series. The story centers on two sisters: level-headed Eliza and Lavender, a dreamer. They live with Grandma Maud; their parents died in an accident at a village festival and their Grandpa Joe went missing, both events having taken place before the start of the story. The girls live on a farm in the Middle of Nowhere and while Eliza toils away at their farm chores, Lavender reads fairytales and dreams of princes as she perfects her princess personality. One day, Lavender runs away in hopes of being rescued by a prince and sets off an adventure in which she is captured by a bankrupt bad guy and Eliza must rescue her sister given only a goat named Gertrude for a steed and a hat and a beard as magical tools for saving the day. This humorous tale is funny right down to the sentence level narration ("The next morning was bright and lovely. The birds sang. Dawn rose. Then she went back to bed. Luckily Dawn isn't part of this story. She didn't really get up to much."). Witty writing combined with a cast of characters that are as ridiculous as they are memorable—rendered in black-and-white drawings throughout—makes for a great series opener. VERDICT A fun read for chapter book and younger middle grade readers.—Samantha Lumetta, Public Library of Cincinnati and Hamilton County, OH

Review

“This cross between a fractured fairy tale and any of Roald Dahl's zany adventures is the first installment in the "Buckle and Squash" series. Witty writing combined with a cast of characters that are as ridiculous as they are memorable-rendered in black-and-white drawings throughout-makes for ... a fun read for chapter book and younger middle grade readers.” ―School Library Journal

“Absurdity reigns in Courtauld's boisterous, logic-warping fantasy ... Abundant wordplay, sarcastic footnotes, and a slew of out-of-left-field jokes make this book ideal for fans of Dav Pilkey, Andy Griffiths, or Lois Lowry's The Willoughbys.” ―Publishers Weekly

“This mixed-up fairy tale has everything readers could want, including adventure, danger, and a cantankerous goat....Just right for readers who like their princess stories with a large dose of humor.” ―Booklist

“This gleefully absurd British import packs both witty wordplay and potty humor.... Fans of Captain Underpants may find that fairy-tale send-ups can be just as giggle-inducing as superhero satire.” ―BCCB

Bird Considering that I will never but EVER write an early chapter book or, for that matter, an easy book for new readers, it’s funny how often I sit around contemplating their difficulty. More precisely, I want to know which ones are more difficult to write. Easy books sounds like they’d be the hardest, particularly since it is remarkably hard to siphon a book down to its most essential parts while also making it interesting. Then again, those early chapter books are the devil. We see whole bunches of them published every year but how many are the type you’d like to read to your kids at bedtime over and over and over again? Nothing against Magic Treehouse, but would it kill Mary Pope Osborne to include just one tiny giant name Bonnet? Or have her characters fake The Black Death with the aid of turnip soup? I guess that’s what’s so great about Sarah Courtauld’s early chapter book import “The Perilous Princess Plot”. Not only is it sublime bedtime reading, it’s also perfect for transitioning kids to longer books, AND it’s knock your socks off funny. Goat and gruel, there’s something for everyone here. Unless you hate humor. Then you’re out of luck.Meet Lavender. Interests include princesses, being a princess someday, handsome princes, and princesses (did I mention that one?). Meet her younger sister, Eliza. Interests include not hearing Lavender mention anything fairy tale related ever ever again (to say nothing of her singing). The two live in the Middle of Nowhere, in the Forgotten Corner of the Kingdom, in the realm of Squerb and their lives are pretty ordinary. Ordinary, that is, until Lavender gets herself kidnapped by the villain Mordmont who is hoping to ransom a pricey princess. Now it’s up to Eliza and her trusty steed/goat Gertrude to rescue Lavender (whether she wants to be rescued or not) and to generally save the day. There just might be a couple odd pit stops to attend to first. It’s interesting. An author has a lot of ways of making a protagonist sympathetic to the her readership. Often in children’s books an instantaneous way is to make them the recipient of unfair treatment. Nothing captures hearts and minds more swiftly or efficiently than good old-fashioned outrage on behalf of your heroine and that’s certainly how Courtauld begins the book, with Eliza mucking out the goat pen as Lavender tra la las about. However, the real way in which you bond with Eliza is through your mutual annoyance with Lavender. Lavender is sort of what would happen if Fancy Nancy ever got so swallowed up in a princess obsession that she became unrecognizable to her family. Courtauld was quite clever to make Lavender the older sibling too. We’ve all seen the younger-princess-obsessed sibling motif in various books and while I’ve nothing against it, there’s something particularly grating when someone who, by dearth of age alone, should know better yet doesn’t.In a given day you probably won’t read many early chapter books for kids that feel like the cast of Monty Python meandered out of retirement to write a book for children. Funny? Baby, you don’t know the half of it. Funny is hard. Funny is difficult. Funny is almost impossible to pin down because everyone’s sense of humor is different in some way from everyone else’s. But I simply refuse to believe that there’s a kid out there who could read this book and not crack a smile once. Here, I’ll give you an example. Early in the story the evil villain Mordmont is depressed. As he says, “I’m a man of simple pleasures . . . All I ever wanted was a castle, my own pride of lions, a jeweled crown, a choir of elves singing me awake each morning, sainthood, the power to make gold, the best mustache in Europe, a Jacuzzi, an elephant from the Indies, another one to be its friend, a singing giraffe, the power of invisibility, Magic Cheese Powers, a tiger with the feet of a lamb, the head of a lamb, and the body of a lamb – basically, a lamb – power over the sea, power over the letter C . . .” at which point we’re told that another 4,235 simple pleasures are to be skipped over so that we can fast forward to the final one, “a meringue that speaks Japanese.” It’s the lamb part that really got me. Love that lamb.So let’s say you’re writing an early chapter book and you have the chance to illustrate it yourself. Do you do so? Particularly if it’s your debut novel? Yep. I’ve checked out her CV and from what I can tell Ms. Courtauld isn’t exactly a trained artist. In this respect she reminds me not a little of Abby Hanlon, another hilarious early chapter book author/self-taught illustrator whose “Dory Fantasmagory” is largely aided by her seemingly effortless pencilings. In this book too the art is deceptively simple. Just pencil sketches of silly tiny things, really. Yet I tell you right now that if some fancy pants illustrator walked up and said they’d redo the whole thing for free, I’d turn ‘em down flat. Courtauld has this perverse little style (in the best possible way, naturally) that just clicks with her storytelling. Some of it is obvious, like the view of a tearful rhino forced to watch Swan Lake, and some are visual gags so cheap that you just want to physically hug the book itself (like the image of people poking a girl after Mordmont talks about losing at poker). And how many early chapter book British imports can you name that contain images of Kanye West? I rest my case. Check and mate, babies.According to a number of reputable sources this book has, “won the Sainsbury's Book Award, and has been shortlisted for the Sheffield Children's Book Prize and Coventry Inspiration Book Award.” In the U.K. it was also originally released with the title “Buckle and Squash and the Monstrous Moat-Dragon”. I’m not entirely certain why the U.S. publisher chose to change that one. Perilous plots are nice and all but they can’t really hold a candle to freakin’ moat dragons, now can they? I mean, it’s a dragon! In a moat! Still, a title change is a small price to pay when you get a book as good as this one. Hand it to a boy, hand it to a girl, hand it to a goat, they’ll all enjoy it in their own ways (though the goat may need a bit of a floss afterwards). If there are more Buckle and Squash books on the horizon, let us hope they float our way. I, for one, will look forward to those adventures. After all, the Monty Python guys can’t live forever. Time for someone else to pick up the torch.

Puntastic bedtime read-aloud By Shae Has Left the Room http://www.shaelit.com/2015/05/review-the-perilous-princess-plot-by-sarah-courtauld/Most of the time when I read books, I just enjoy the book. I don’t think about target audiences or age ranges or anything like that. A good book is a good book. But then sometimes I pick up a book like this one and get thwacked between the eyes with the fact that I am not, in fact, the intended audience. And you know what? That’s okay, because kids are going to love this book. The Perilous Princess Plot is a funny little book. It’s not very long and is definitely light on things I’ve come to expect in older book like character introspection, descriptions, and the like, but I think that’s part of its charm. Actually, what TPPP is most like is a bedtime story a kid would make up and act out for their parents. This story has two princesses, an evil villain, a goat, a hulking henchman, a short giant, and a lot of scribbled illustrations. It doesn’t always make sense and certainly isn’t realistic, but who the heck cares?Because I’ll tell you this, adults will find things to giggle over alongside their kiddos. TPPP plays with puns, figurative language, and the duality of language in a thoroughly delightful manner. It’s like Amelia Bedelia but takes a couple steps beyond ol’ AB’s focus on idioms. Possibly my favorite part was when Lavender displayed her wall of princes. (All of the princes are cleverly named, with the first three being the most clever and the fourth making me laugh out loud.) My recommendation? Grab yourself this book, a kid (one you’re allowed to grab, not a stranger, please), and a willingness to be silly, because this story needs to be read out loud with plenty of sound effects. Enjoy!Points Added For: Puns and word silliness, the wall of princess, the illustrations.Points Subtracted For: Sometimes it got a little too unrealistic for me, but again, not the target audience.Good For Fans Of: Amelia Bedelia, puns, silliness.Notes For Parents: Some gross jokes.

The Perilous Princess plot by Sarah Courtauld was a great, entertaining By Young Mensan BookParade The fiction/fantasy novel, The Perilous Princess plot by Sarah Courtauld was a great, entertaining, and humorous book. I think other readers would enjoy this because it has humorous lines, parts, and the whole book is FUNNY! I do think that older kids would not enjoy the humor as much as me or younger kids would. I loved the humor in it, and I think that 6+ years would understand, and laugh at the jokes in this book.My favorite part was when the story said: " Mordmont led her past the ball room, the pantry, and the scullery. " The author did these literally, and illustrated a tree with pants on it for the pantry, a room with balls everywhere for the ballroom, and a room with skulls for the scullery. All in all this was an entertaining book.review by Sofia H, age 11, Denver Mensa

HARDY-HAR-HAR!

Meet Otis Dooda. Yes, that's his name. Go on and have a good laugh. He's heard it all before. He's been called things like Otis Poopy Stink and Otis Toilet Twinkie. That's right, yuck it up and get it out of your system. We'll wait.

All right then. This is the story of Otis and the Dooda family (including their rat named Smoochie) moving to New York City, and the incredibly strange, but true, things that happened to them. It all started with Otis getting cursed by a guy in a potted plant in their apartment building lobby, and then meeting a bunch of their neighbors, including a farting pony named Peaches who was disguised as a dog. And that was just the first day.

Otis Dooda: Strange but True (Otis Dooda Series), by Ellen Potter

From School Library Journal Gr 3-5–Potter leaves the more serious nature of The Humming Room (Feiwel & Friends, 2012) behind for this slapstick joyride. Otis Dooda is used to people joking about his name; he's heard it all: Otis Poopy-Stinks, Otis Toilet Twinkie, etc. He's over it. What he's not over is his family's move from the country to the 35th floor of an apartment in New York City. His older, rat-loving brother, Gunther, is a source of annoyance and disgust; his mother has a penchant for soy wieners; and his dad shouts, “Rice and beans!” when he's angry. Otis's misadventures begin immediately when he offends the strange kid hiding in a potted plant on the apartment's first floor. The “Potted Plant Guy” hands out a curse: Otis will break all his bones by the next full Moon. Foiling the curse drives the youngster throughout the story, with plenty of odd things happening along the way. He meets Perry, the owner of a miniature horse with a gas problem; Cat, who has siblings named Linus, Lucy, and Hobbes; and Lola and Noodle, poodles dyed pink and blue. There are plenty of poop and fart jokes, and the black-and-white illustrations add a graphic-novel feel. Give this one to fans of the “Diary of a Wimpy Kid” (Abrams) and “Captain Underpants” (Scholastic) series.–Jamie Kallio, Orland Park Public Library, ILα(c) Copyright 2013. Library Journals LLC, a wholly owned subsidiary of Media Source, Inc. No redistribution permitted.

From Booklist Otis Dooda clearly shares juvenile-literature DNA with a certain Wimpy Kid. Skewed for a slightly younger crowd, this first book in what will surely wind up as a series introduces our hero struggling not only with an awful moniker but with a family move to a New York City apartment building packed with quirky characters, each inked in rascally black and white. Otis’ new friends include Cat (middle name “Girl”), whose Vietnamese immigrant mother named her kids after comic-strip characters (siblings: Lucy, Linus, and Hobbes); and Perry, whose father runs a party business. Otis’ nemesis is Potted Plant Guy, a mysterious personage who demands tribute from behind the greenery in the building’s lobby and who curses Otis on his first day in New York. Whether or not Otis can head off the threat of all his bones being broken by the next full moon constitutes the book’s plot, which features lots of silliness and plenty of fart jokes, courtesy of Perry’s miniature horse, Peaches. Humor, hot air, and crudely rendered drawings should ensure this saga’s popularity. Grades 3-6. --Karen Cruze

Review "Setting to make 8 year old boys laugh, as Ellen Potter has done here, is a great goal, I think. And I think that Otis Dooda: Strange but True succeeds." --Jen Robinson's Book Page

“Heatley strikes an apt balance between cartoony and creepy in his b&w artwork, and Potter has a firm handle on both Otis's self-effacing, drily funny voice and her audience's love of Legos, bizarre plot developments, and bountiful scatological humor.” ―Publishers Weekly

“There are plenty of poop and fart jokes, and the black-and-white illustrations add a graphic-novel feel. Give this one to fans of the Diary of a Wimpy Kid (Abrams) and Captain Underpants (Scholastic) series.” ―School Library Journal

The book has been read and reread and reread again. And the CD that goes with it, with original music performed by illustrator David Heatley adds a ton to the Otis Dooda experience. Get both. Love both. And wait for the movie that surely will come from this new series of bizarre and hilarious books.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Do Do Do Dooda! By This Kid Reviews Books Otis Dooda and his family have moved from the small town of Hog's Head, to the big city of New York. They live on the top floor of Tidwell Towers, neighboring a girl whose bedroom is on the ceiling, a boy who has a rare "French Gerbil Hound" (It's really a miniature horse/pony, but the apartment doesn't take horses, but it takes dogs), and some weird old lady. And it doesn't help that there is some strange lady named "Ms. Yabby" who writes news that goes on in the Towers, called the Tidwell Tidbits - and, the fact is, most of it isn't true, just rumors and gossip. That's a problem, especially when it targets a new family in the Towers... The Doodas! And, apparently, Otis is cursed by a guy hiding in a potted plant, saying that Otis will break all of his bones before the next full-moon. Otis finds out that the weird potted plant guy's predictions ALWAYS come true. What can a kid do?I will say that I am a fan of Ellen Potter. I have read Spilling Ink and Slob. Ms. Potter didn't disappoint me with Otis Dooda! It is a hilarious book! I really like the unrealistic (but possible) things that happen - it actually makes the story even more hilarious! I like the cannon that shoots you into a giant vat of marshmallow fluff, and Peaches (the horse/dog/rodent :) ). The illustrations are pretty funny, realistic, and they are incorporated into the text, similar to Diary of a Wimpy Kid, or Big Nate. The illustration style of the book makes it more fun to read. Otis Dooda is great character and I LOVED reading about him. He makes some really dumb decisions in the book (but what kid doesn't) that leads to hilarious outcomes! This is a great story that is guaranteed to make young boys (and girls) laugh out loud (I'm a BIG boy, and I sure laughed out loud! :D )! I am already waiting for Book 2.*NOTE I Got A Free Copy Of This Book In Exchange For An Honest Review.

Gabby Duran and the Unsittables, by Elise Allen, Daryle Conners

From School Library Journal Gr 4–7—Gabby works hard as a babysitter, earning money to help her mother support their family. She plays the French Horn and desires to attend a prestigious music college in the future. Her skill with children has led to jobs working with movie stars as well as neighbors. But none of her previous babysitting experiences have completely prepared her for what comes her way when an old woman offers Gabby a job she can't refuse. With her dream of attending the expensive music school squarely in mind, the compassionate tween accepts the assignment to babysit the "unsittable." These alien children bring more excitement and secrets into Gabby's life than she is prepared to handle. Since the work is highly secretive and can come at any time, Gabby has to decide if she is really willing to do what it takes to care for and protect these children, possibly at the cost of her own friendships and music. An entertaining look at the possibilities inherent in alien life on earth, Gabby's adventures will enthrall readers eager to explore a world of surprises and secrets. VERDICT The humorous details and quick plot make this a fun book for reluctant and avid readers alike.—Heidi Grange, Summit Elementary School, Smithfield, UT

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Loved it! By This Kid Reviews Books Synopsis- Gabby Duran is a world famous babysitter. She has clients all over the world. But when Gabby gets approached by “Edwina” from the The Association Linking Intergalatics and Earthlings (A.L.I.E.N.) with a special offer, Gabby is reluctant to agree, even with the wages offered. She has other clients! Then Gabby realizes that, with this job, she will have clients that are out of this world! She learns that aliens live on Earth alongside humans. They do a great job of blending in, but they need a babysitter who can be trusted. Babysitting aliens may be more than Gabby bargained for. What I Thought- This was a great story about how you should go all in for what you like to do, and do it well. Gabby sacrificed her own free-time (and sometimes her safety) for other people. Gabby really is a role model. She’s clever, fun, and plays an instrument in school band. The plot is exciting and full of twists and turns. I like the character of Lee, Gabby’s best friend. She’s an eccentric, smart, geeky inventor. The authors really capture the sense of realism, even in the midst of aliens. Their writing style kept me reading and offered a fresh twist on a babysitting story. Boys and girls will like this one. The book was funny, action-packed, and altogether a great read.*NOTE* I got a free copy of this book in exchange for an honest review

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. A fun, eccentric look at babysitter and aliens By The Kid Book Reviewers My Thoughts: This was such a fun, sweet story! (This review might be relatively short due to the fact that I have no criticism whatsoever. :) ) I loved Gabby, and think she has a great personality to make the perfect main character. Wutt, Edwina - even Adam Dent and the triplets - were all wonderful additions to the story, too, and I enjoyed every page of them. This book was action-packed while still silly, and I found myself laughing out loud very often. The writing was easy to understand, which helped me zoom through this book without having to hesitate on a paragraph. Hilarious twists - plus, I loved Gabby's best friend, Zee! A fun, eccentric look at babysitter and aliens, and I can't wait to read more!

By KathyCox Even as an adult, I thoroughly enjoyed this book and hope it is the first of a series. The story was very creative and clever, fun scenarios, strong descriptive language, and wonderful a celebration of kids of all types - alien or human. And a surprise ending! I can absolutely see how readers would imagine themselves in the Gabby role, living out these adventures. I loved it and it will my birthday and holiday gift of choice this year for my younger friends and family members.

Most of us are broken in some way, but that doesn't mean we don't have value and don't make contributions. This book is a charming way to remind readers of the Golden Rule, and reminds us that "God don't make no junk". A must-read for families!

Conceive the Natural Way By Miranda Jenkins My heart just breaks for one of my friends and her husband, they have been trying so hard to get pregnant and they just can’t seem to quite get there. She blames herself, he blames himself. I thought I could read this and then share the book with them in the hopes it will help them with the one thing that they so desperately want, children. This is a great book with terrific suggestions and tips for any couple wanting to conceive. It is easy to read and understand and the way the author has broken everything up is great. I never realized so many factors could interfere with trying to get pregnant. My friends will definitely be getting this book to read!

By Linda I sympathize greatly with the author because I, as a sufferer of PCOS, have always been haunted by a fear of infertility. I think another thing that resonated about the book is the way in which we all feel so extremely anxious when we are planning a baby. We self-sabotage with the fear of not meeting our expectations. Then, our periods go out of whack, and so does our ovulation time. The tips given in this book are very interesting. Diet, the importance of keeping the body active enough to achieve all its functions properly, the way that mediation and other ways of doing things can help your brain boost your hormone-producing power to the point of achieving all of your pregnancy goals. I wish I had had this book when I was in my 20's and crazy to have a baby with my newly-wed husband. I wasted more time being anxious than putting myself together to make my body do a better job.

I wish I had read this book at that time of my life. The suggestions made in this books sound so helpful and appealing – they may have worked for me, but we’ll never know. If you are trying to get pregnant or are wanting to in the future, take some of these suggestions to heart and start putting them into practice now. Skip the booze, quit the smoking, and getting your body on a normal life cycle are all conducive to getting pregnant. Good luck to all future parents out there!

Best Ebook The Murder Complex, by Lindsay Cummings

An action-packed, blood-soaked, futuristic debut thriller—set in a world where the murder rate is higher than the birthrate—that Booklist called "carefully crafted . . . chilling." "Legend meets La Femme Nikita in this dark and dangerous bloody thriller. The nonstop action of The Murder Complex kept us guessing at every twist and turn. It's a must for fans of action-packed dystopians like The Hunger Games and Divergent."—Justine Magazine

Meadow Woodson, a fifteen-year-old girl who has been trained by her father to fight, to kill, and to survive in any situation, lives with her family on a houseboat in Florida. The state is controlled by The Murder Complex, an organization that tracks the population with precision. The plot starts to thicken when Meadow meets Zephyr James, who is—although he doesn't know it—one of the MC's programmed assassins. Is their meeting a coincidence? Destiny? Or part of a terrifying strategy? And will Zephyr keep Meadow from discovering the haunting truth about her family? Action-packed, blood-soaked, and chilling, this is a dark and compelling debut novel by Lindsay Cummings.

The Murder Complex, by Lindsay Cummings

From School Library Journal Gr 9 Up—A cure for human disease has been found, and overpopulation sets in, causing the society in this bleak dystopian novel to create an official murder compound. Cummings builds an intense, distinct world full of rogue pirates and government commandments. Meadow's main concern is taking care of her family, and her father has trained her to survive in any situation, making her a tough fighter. Zephyr is an unhappy ward assigned to carry out the Initiative's violent commands. After a chance encounter brings the two together, they form an immediate bond, though the reasons for their desire are not set up beforehand, which leads to a forced romance. The point of view alternates between the teens, but it is difficult to distinguish between their narrative voices. This dismal look at the darker side of humanity raises interesting questions of wealth, power, and privacy, yet none of them is fully explored. An additional purchase for those still looking to bolster their dystopian collections.—Carrie Shaurette, Dwight-Englewood School, Englewood, NJ

From Booklist In the Shallows, once known as the Everglades, hard-to-earn Creds are traded like old-fashioned money, kindness is punishable, and the mantra is kill or be killed. Everything is controlled by the omnipotent Initiative, and life matters little since overpopulation was facilitated by the Cure. Meadow, on the verge of 16, murders to secure a job in the rations department, while Zephyr, a 17-year-old ward, spends his mornings cleaning the streets of the dead. Through a chance meeting, they find they are made for each other despite the fact that he is programmed to kill, and she is trained to survive. Nevertheless, they join forces to find out who Meadow’s mother was and who Zephyr really is. Chapters alternate between the duo’s points of view, dovetailing into an explosive, mind-bending quest to stop the oppression. This debut is a carefully crafted, chilling look at how unbridled control over citizens’ lives leads to fear, anger, and blind trust, while raising many important questions about playing God and its long-term consequences. Grades 9-12. --Jeanne Fredriksen

I was allured by the dark essence and the fast paced plot that kept me engaged and entertained until the very last page! It was a bloody world, full of twist and turns that satisfied. But to keep it real, THE MURDER COMPLEX was a good book, but it had it's faults. There where many aspects that I enjoyed, but many that I didn't. One that I really enjoyed was the world-building--the backbone to THE MURDER COMPLEX. I liked that it added it's own touch of originality to the dystopian world, and that it delivered on that aspect of the book.Another thing that I really loved was that it was bloody! I don't really know what that says about me...lol, ;) but I loved all the blood and murder, and the chase. It was thrilling to live through it all through the characters eyes, and see and feel what they felt. It was definitely a terrifying world that I would never want to live through!! I do give the author mad props for creating such a complex world that was dark and deadly, and awesomely thrilling!!But there were a few things that drove me insane. Manly it was just one of the characters that I didn't like for numerous reasons. Zephyr was one of the main POV's and the love interest that drove me insane. First, his name annoyed the hell out of me!! I mean what kind of name is Zephyr??? That was the first strike against him. Then he said this repetitive word, Skitz's." What hell does Skitz's mean anyway?? I looked it up, and it's the meaning for Schizophrenia. WHAT??? What idiot would go around saying that all the time?? Then, when he meets Meadow, the other main POV, he starts acting like a little love sick puppy that would bend the earth for her. I mean he JUST met her and he was acting like that. Actually, I think he said that he might love her before he was even formally introduced to her. He was just a total turn off from the beginning, and then it just kept getting worse. Their was just too many reasons why I didn't see eye to eye with his character.Another issue I had was the POV switch. I can usually put up with multiples POV's, but don't prefer them. And THE MURDER COMPLEX was no exception. I really only liked Meadow's POV. Zephyr just drove me crazy, and that made me hate him even more when it would switch to his POV.THE PLOTCommandment One: Honor the Initiative.Commandment Two: Thou shalt not attempt to cross the perimeter.Commandment Three: Honor the Silent Hour.Commandment Four: Thou shalt not harbor useful items from the days before. In the horrifying world of THE MURDER COMPLEX, where murder rate is higher than the birthrate, and killing becomes as easy as breathing. Meadow, a girl just trying survive in this blood-soaked world she was born in, is ready to do the unthinkable in order to keep her family alive--even if she has to kill for it...Fifteen-year-old Meadow Woodson has been trained to kill. Her only goal in life is to survive, survive and keep her family breathing, and that is by any means necessary.KILL OR BE KILLED...Meadow's father has been training her how to fight, kill, and survive for years. Preparing her for her chance to take the placement testing--where everyone gets the opportunity to prove their worth for the honor of a job in their society. He's been readying her for when the time comes that she will have to kill or be killed, for the job that their family so desperately needs. And it's now Meadow's time--kill or be killed.... Meadow is determined to be the last one standing, she's ready to embrace her training, she's ready to shed blood, she's ready to kill....But then Meadow's world starts to fall apart even more when she meets Zephyr, a Ward of the state--unworthy in the eyes of The Murder Complex. But something is different about Zephyr, he's not like the other Wards, and she feels compelled to help him when he makes a stupid decision that could cost him his very life. And then the web The Murder Complex spun many years ago begins to unravel, and the truth behind it all starts to slowly surface, and many facts are revealed that could shatter their world to the very core. Meadow's world becomes a race against the clock as she tries to understand who--or what Zephyr is, and what really is The Murder Complex, and why do they want her so badly, but most important, how is her mother tied into it all. As if that's not enough, Meadow has to cope with all this while trying to find and rescue her family that's just become missing.Like I said above, it was a good book with it's flaws. I was expecting more from THE MURDER COMPLEX then what I got, but it still satisfied enough to keep my attention and have me engrossed in the characters and the overall plot of the book. I'm still eager to read the next book and see how it all plays out, because that ending was intense and definitely has me craving the next book!!Overall, THE MURDER COMPLEX was a thrilling start to a fun series that I know I will continue to enjoy! I had my issues with this book, but I also really enjoyed it at the same time. I've been eager to read this book after hearing about how bloody and dark it would be, and it overall didn't disappoint! I think if you enjoy dystopia, mixed with a touch of Sci-f, thrown into a bloody dark world, then you will definitely enjoy this one!!NOTE: I received a physical ARC from Harper Teen for reviewing purposes! All opinions expressed are my own and are not influenced in any way!

By A Reading Nurse Wow, what can I say about The Murder Complex, other than it was one hell of a ride. You are immediately drawn into the story line. I don't want to go too much more into the synopsis than what is stated above. Almost from page one you are drawn into this action packed story. This story is very dark and at times gory. This story had a very DIVERGENT feel to me, except the roles are reversed. Meadow is the one that is brave and kick ass where as Zephyr is trying to figure things out, who is, what he is and why he keeps doing things we doesn't want to to do.There are so many twists and turns in this book that start about 50 % through, starting from one almost "deadly" kiss. Around this point is where I could not put the book down and I flew through the last 50 percent of the book in less than 2 hours, because I just had to know what was going to happen next. There is a big TWIST in the end of the book that made me gasp out loud. Luckily the book does not end on a huge cliff hanger, but so many new components are revealed that will keep you waiting for the next installment of the series. With all the action and big scenes, I would have liked to see a little more talk about emotions and feelings to kind of add more context to the action that was occurring and add more depth to the over-all story line. These characters were so great and interesting I wanted to know more about them and develop a deeper connection to them. I am hoping to see more character development in the next book, mixed in with the awesome story line and action packed pace that Lindsay Cummings has created.

Lindsay Cummings on Instagram and Youtube and I just love her to pieces By CindiJ I follow Lindsay Cummings on Instagram and Youtube and I just love her to pieces! She has such a great personality and one day I'd love to meet her. But in several interviews, she did mention while writing this book, she went through a bout of depression due to some illnesses she's had, and I totally saw that being reflected in this book. This book was dark and bloody and sometimes unnecessarily so. I felt ok about Meadow and ok about Zephr. Both of them didn't really make me feel for them like I sometimes feel for characters in books. I liked the alternating chapters style and didn't get mixed up while reading it. Lindsay provided different voices for Meadow and Zephr and I thought that was done really well.I guess my main problems with this book were the world building and the writing style. First the world building. I didn't quite understand why the world turned out the way it did. How come the death rate is so appalling and killing just like this was ok. The government seemed really bad but how did it get this way? It gets somewhat explained towards the end but I wanted more! In this Dystopian world, there's not really this BIG BAD that I felt like controlled everything and gave us a reason to fear it. There were just crazy people running around that were supposed to be "the government" so it didn't quite make me understand how this world worked. The writing style, while sometimes beautiful, I felt lacked description. I wanted a more rich book...as rich as a pool of fresh blood!!! The pacing was really really fast and sometimes I wished it slowed down a bit to provide richer description of the setting or feelings these characters were having. For instance, sometimes with certain action scenes, I'd get confused where the characters were and how the fights were happening. I didn't know who was in the scene and where the bad guys were in connection to the good guys in a room! The ending was definitely a cliffhanger and I have no idea how Lindsay is going to turn this one around in the next book. It's almost a dire situation so I'll just leave it at that. I will be picking up the second and last book (I heard this was a duology) because I want to support her in every way! I just hope some of the problems I encountered in this one is somehow fixed in the next!
