The Murder Complex, by Lindsay Cummings

From School Library Journal Gr 9 Up—A cure for human disease has been found, and overpopulation sets in, causing the society in this bleak dystopian novel to create an official murder compound. Cummings builds an intense, distinct world full of rogue pirates and government commandments. Meadow's main concern is taking care of her family, and her father has trained her to survive in any situation, making her a tough fighter. Zephyr is an unhappy ward assigned to carry out the Initiative's violent commands. After a chance encounter brings the two together, they form an immediate bond, though the reasons for their desire are not set up beforehand, which leads to a forced romance. The point of view alternates between the teens, but it is difficult to distinguish between their narrative voices. This dismal look at the darker side of humanity raises interesting questions of wealth, power, and privacy, yet none of them is fully explored. An additional purchase for those still looking to bolster their dystopian collections.—Carrie Shaurette, Dwight-Englewood School, Englewood, NJ

From Booklist In the Shallows, once known as the Everglades, hard-to-earn Creds are traded like old-fashioned money, kindness is punishable, and the mantra is kill or be killed. Everything is controlled by the omnipotent Initiative, and life matters little since overpopulation was facilitated by the Cure. Meadow, on the verge of 16, murders to secure a job in the rations department, while Zephyr, a 17-year-old ward, spends his mornings cleaning the streets of the dead. Through a chance meeting, they find they are made for each other despite the fact that he is programmed to kill, and she is trained to survive. Nevertheless, they join forces to find out who Meadow’s mother was and who Zephyr really is. Chapters alternate between the duo’s points of view, dovetailing into an explosive, mind-bending quest to stop the oppression. This debut is a carefully crafted, chilling look at how unbridled control over citizens’ lives leads to fear, anger, and blind trust, while raising many important questions about playing God and its long-term consequences. Grades 9-12. --Jeanne Fredriksen

I was allured by the dark essence and the fast paced plot that kept me engaged and entertained until the very last page! It was a bloody world, full of twist and turns that satisfied. But to keep it real, THE MURDER COMPLEX was a good book, but it had it's faults. There where many aspects that I enjoyed, but many that I didn't. One that I really enjoyed was the world-building--the backbone to THE MURDER COMPLEX. I liked that it added it's own touch of originality to the dystopian world, and that it delivered on that aspect of the book.Another thing that I really loved was that it was bloody! I don't really know what that says about me...lol, ;) but I loved all the blood and murder, and the chase. It was thrilling to live through it all through the characters eyes, and see and feel what they felt. It was definitely a terrifying world that I would never want to live through!! I do give the author mad props for creating such a complex world that was dark and deadly, and awesomely thrilling!!But there were a few things that drove me insane. Manly it was just one of the characters that I didn't like for numerous reasons. Zephyr was one of the main POV's and the love interest that drove me insane. First, his name annoyed the hell out of me!! I mean what kind of name is Zephyr??? That was the first strike against him. Then he said this repetitive word, Skitz's." What hell does Skitz's mean anyway?? I looked it up, and it's the meaning for Schizophrenia. WHAT??? What idiot would go around saying that all the time?? Then, when he meets Meadow, the other main POV, he starts acting like a little love sick puppy that would bend the earth for her. I mean he JUST met her and he was acting like that. Actually, I think he said that he might love her before he was even formally introduced to her. He was just a total turn off from the beginning, and then it just kept getting worse. Their was just too many reasons why I didn't see eye to eye with his character.Another issue I had was the POV switch. I can usually put up with multiples POV's, but don't prefer them. And THE MURDER COMPLEX was no exception. I really only liked Meadow's POV. Zephyr just drove me crazy, and that made me hate him even more when it would switch to his POV.THE PLOTCommandment One: Honor the Initiative.Commandment Two: Thou shalt not attempt to cross the perimeter.Commandment Three: Honor the Silent Hour.Commandment Four: Thou shalt not harbor useful items from the days before. In the horrifying world of THE MURDER COMPLEX, where murder rate is higher than the birthrate, and killing becomes as easy as breathing. Meadow, a girl just trying survive in this blood-soaked world she was born in, is ready to do the unthinkable in order to keep her family alive--even if she has to kill for it...Fifteen-year-old Meadow Woodson has been trained to kill. Her only goal in life is to survive, survive and keep her family breathing, and that is by any means necessary.KILL OR BE KILLED...Meadow's father has been training her how to fight, kill, and survive for years. Preparing her for her chance to take the placement testing--where everyone gets the opportunity to prove their worth for the honor of a job in their society. He's been readying her for when the time comes that she will have to kill or be killed, for the job that their family so desperately needs. And it's now Meadow's time--kill or be killed.... Meadow is determined to be the last one standing, she's ready to embrace her training, she's ready to shed blood, she's ready to kill....But then Meadow's world starts to fall apart even more when she meets Zephyr, a Ward of the state--unworthy in the eyes of The Murder Complex. But something is different about Zephyr, he's not like the other Wards, and she feels compelled to help him when he makes a stupid decision that could cost him his very life. And then the web The Murder Complex spun many years ago begins to unravel, and the truth behind it all starts to slowly surface, and many facts are revealed that could shatter their world to the very core. Meadow's world becomes a race against the clock as she tries to understand who--or what Zephyr is, and what really is The Murder Complex, and why do they want her so badly, but most important, how is her mother tied into it all. As if that's not enough, Meadow has to cope with all this while trying to find and rescue her family that's just become missing.Like I said above, it was a good book with it's flaws. I was expecting more from THE MURDER COMPLEX then what I got, but it still satisfied enough to keep my attention and have me engrossed in the characters and the overall plot of the book. I'm still eager to read the next book and see how it all plays out, because that ending was intense and definitely has me craving the next book!!Overall, THE MURDER COMPLEX was a thrilling start to a fun series that I know I will continue to enjoy! I had my issues with this book, but I also really enjoyed it at the same time. I've been eager to read this book after hearing about how bloody and dark it would be, and it overall didn't disappoint! I think if you enjoy dystopia, mixed with a touch of Sci-f, thrown into a bloody dark world, then you will definitely enjoy this one!!NOTE: I received a physical ARC from Harper Teen for reviewing purposes! All opinions expressed are my own and are not influenced in any way!

By A Reading Nurse Wow, what can I say about The Murder Complex, other than it was one hell of a ride. You are immediately drawn into the story line. I don't want to go too much more into the synopsis than what is stated above. Almost from page one you are drawn into this action packed story. This story is very dark and at times gory. This story had a very DIVERGENT feel to me, except the roles are reversed. Meadow is the one that is brave and kick ass where as Zephyr is trying to figure things out, who is, what he is and why he keeps doing things we doesn't want to to do.There are so many twists and turns in this book that start about 50 % through, starting from one almost "deadly" kiss. Around this point is where I could not put the book down and I flew through the last 50 percent of the book in less than 2 hours, because I just had to know what was going to happen next. There is a big TWIST in the end of the book that made me gasp out loud. Luckily the book does not end on a huge cliff hanger, but so many new components are revealed that will keep you waiting for the next installment of the series. With all the action and big scenes, I would have liked to see a little more talk about emotions and feelings to kind of add more context to the action that was occurring and add more depth to the over-all story line. These characters were so great and interesting I wanted to know more about them and develop a deeper connection to them. I am hoping to see more character development in the next book, mixed in with the awesome story line and action packed pace that Lindsay Cummings has created.

Lindsay Cummings on Instagram and Youtube and I just love her to pieces By CindiJ I follow Lindsay Cummings on Instagram and Youtube and I just love her to pieces! She has such a great personality and one day I'd love to meet her. But in several interviews, she did mention while writing this book, she went through a bout of depression due to some illnesses she's had, and I totally saw that being reflected in this book. This book was dark and bloody and sometimes unnecessarily so. I felt ok about Meadow and ok about Zephr. Both of them didn't really make me feel for them like I sometimes feel for characters in books. I liked the alternating chapters style and didn't get mixed up while reading it. Lindsay provided different voices for Meadow and Zephr and I thought that was done really well.I guess my main problems with this book were the world building and the writing style. First the world building. I didn't quite understand why the world turned out the way it did. How come the death rate is so appalling and killing just like this was ok. The government seemed really bad but how did it get this way? It gets somewhat explained towards the end but I wanted more! In this Dystopian world, there's not really this BIG BAD that I felt like controlled everything and gave us a reason to fear it. There were just crazy people running around that were supposed to be "the government" so it didn't quite make me understand how this world worked. The writing style, while sometimes beautiful, I felt lacked description. I wanted a more rich book...as rich as a pool of fresh blood!!! The pacing was really really fast and sometimes I wished it slowed down a bit to provide richer description of the setting or feelings these characters were having. For instance, sometimes with certain action scenes, I'd get confused where the characters were and how the fights were happening. I didn't know who was in the scene and where the bad guys were in connection to the good guys in a room! The ending was definitely a cliffhanger and I have no idea how Lindsay is going to turn this one around in the next book. It's almost a dire situation so I'll just leave it at that. I will be picking up the second and last book (I heard this was a duology) because I want to support her in every way! I just hope some of the problems I encountered in this one is somehow fixed in the next!
