The ages for which it is advertised are far in the past for me, but I very much enjoyed reading the book. It held my interest from start to finish and I am sure it will do the same for young readers.Both boys and girls will enjoy this book since both are principle characters about 13 years old. Not only is there mystery and adventure, but there is also an age-appropriate love interest.The Amazon description says it is for grades 4-7, but I think that readers of grades 5 or 6 through 7 or 8 will enjoy the story more since the characters will be easier for them to identify with than it will 4th graders.I believe this is a book that school librarians will want to include since it is not only a good story, but can also be a good choice for reluctant readers. I know that if I were still a school administrator that I would recommend the book be added to the school library.I know from reading book reviews on Amazon that invariably somebody summarizes the story. I don't intend to do that. Amazon has provided enough information to give you the big picture.Rather, what I do want to do is tell you that I personally enjoyed the story and am certain that both boys and girls in the pre- and early-teen years will, too.

Very well written, old fashioned summer mystery By J.Prather Turn Left at The Cow is a well written, fast faced adventure that will be perfect for young readers who enjoy realistic fiction with more than a bit of mystery and a nice touch of romance. When thirteen year old Travis decides he has had enough of his life in California, he leaves his mom and her new husband to travel cross country and stay with his Grandma in Minnesota. It's quite a lifestyle change for Travis, and when he discovers that the father he never knew has a rather sordid history involving bank robbery and hidden money, he finds himself embarking on a quest to uncover the lost dough and discover the truth about what happened so long ago.This is a fast paced read, tightly plotted and filled with moments of home spun humor. The chicken drop game at the church fundraiser had me laughing out loud! The dialogue is witty and well written, with Travis narrating the tale with a typical thirteen year old blend of world wise snark and boyish innocence. The author has perfectly captured the age, and her depiction of the relationship between Travis and his cohort Isabelle is both refreshing and sweet. It's a great portrait of an important age when hand holding means everything, and "almost kisses" happen a lot more than the real thing.The ending is filled with moments of genuine peril that will certainly leave young readers breathlessly turning the pages as they wonder how Travis is going to escape with his very life. The story deals with important issues surrounding friendship, family, and being true to who you are without ever becoming didactic. This has the feel of an old fashioned classic kid's adventure tale that I remember from the good old days, when summer held nothing but the promise of new things to discover. Turn Left at The Cow is an excellent choice for young readers ages 10 to 14.Parents note that in addition to the young romance between Trav and Iz, there is the occasional mention of bikini clad "hotness". There is no objectionable language.

Very Recommended By Talvi Turn Left at the Cow is a very hip and witty mystery featuring a fish-out-of-water main character and the quirky individuals with whom he interacts over one Summer.13 year old Trav, frustrated over his mother's remarriage and lack of time for him, grabs a bus and heads for his long-lost father's family in Minnesota. Amidst butter sculptures, chicken crap bingo, and long Summers at the lake, he finds a mystery involving his father and a bank robbery, new friends, and a different way at looking at life.What makes the book special is the tone of voice of all the characters. Trav considers himself the very hip California boy and speaks in a very assured but nearly comical inner voice laden with cultural references. I liked that inner dialogue most - it felt genuine and gave us a really good perspective on his personality. As well, it flowed and felt natural.Iz and Kenny, the two Trav befriends in Minnesota, are well drawn individuals with home-town perspectives that aren't cheap shots on small town life. And that smaller world fits well with the confusion Trav has over coming to grips with a father who abandoned him and was supposedly dead - as well as the grandmother he's never had an opportunity to meet. Trav is less concerned about the mystery of the missing bank robbery loot than finding out how he feels about his father never coming to find him in California before his mysterious death.In all, I enjoyed reading this with my 10 year old. She didn't get all the cultural references but really enjoyed the mystery and the friends all the same.Received as an ARC from the publisher.
