When he decides to apply for an Imaginary Friend (IF), seeking a supportive "wingman," he gets hilarious results. Martin ends up with two competing IFs—obnoxious Loopy Lou and lazy Sean Murphy—and must find a resolution. The audiobook is narrated by the authors with voices that are expressive and distinct. In particular, the over-the-top, needy personality of IF Loopy Lou is perfectly captured. Although the charming illustrations present in the book (Feiwel & Friends, 2015) are missed, the recording makes up for it with its abundance of auditory gifts, especially the raucous voices and singing. The authors' rendering of the footnotes (which explain the meanings of Irish words in comical ways) is amusing but can be distracting. About the Author
Chris O'Dowd is best known for his roles in Bridesmaids, The IT Crowd, and the HBO show Family Tree. He recently starred in the Broadway play Of Mice and Men, for which he received a Tony nomination for Best Leading Actor. He is the creator and star of the Hulu show Moone Boy, which was inspired by his own childhood in a small town in Ireland.
Nick V. Murphy is a writer and producer, best known for his work co-writing Moone Boy with Chris. He lives in Los Angeles with his family.

Best suited for middle school boys By Connie I must admit that this is an interestingly humorous read, especially since it's geared toward younger readers. While the graphics and the narrative look and read like that of a younger male, the content is a little bit older, and there is definitely a "foreign" (Irish) feel to this, a more mature and more serious attitude about relationships that many American families may find offensive.There are a lot of footnotes in this book, but most of them are there for added sarcasm, like "machismo - a manly strength some men gain by drinking Italian coffee" or for explaining the many strange Irish customs or lingo.Bullying, by either Martin's three sisters or his school classmates come up a lot. Martin is the youngest child in a family of three other girls. Both Martin and his father Liam feel usurped by the women in the home, and part of the story is Martin's attitude about living with all these women and their "feminine needs." He wants a strong dad, so his imaginary friend is an adult with a beard, a stronger character than his own father. Local boy and bully Declan Mannion convinces Martin to let his sister Trisha met him so that he, Declan can fondle her boobs. While the event doesn't go quite so calmly, it does change Declan.I agree that this story is a combination of Wimpy Kid and South Park, a rather strange combination of submissive boy and bullied boy tired of how he's treated. I read this with the intent of sharing this with my 6-year-old grandkid, but I think I'll hold off for a few more years. This story is more appropriate for middle school boys.

Amusing story of a young Irish boy and his imaginary friend By iiiireader I've been a fan of Chris O'Dowd for years and have only been able to see one episode of the television series this book is based upon. The book is a fun story of a young Irish boy, Martin, who is bored and determines that he needs an imaginary friend (IF) in addition to his realsie friend (who is busy all summer on the family farm.Martin is cursed with three older nasty sisters who like to make his life miserable, so he is looking for some male companion. The road to friendship is paved with nettles (unless you take the primrose path) and Martin ends up wondering why he thought an IF would be a good idea. He eventually ends up with a companionable sort of IF. Along the way, he has to deal with mean sisters, bullies, crazy IF stuff, and did I mention mean sisters? As I am a sister myself, I can affirm that some are not mean, but I had two older sisters who confirm the opposite.The book is written in an amusing style that should appeal to children 10 and older. Some of the humor (especially in the footnotes) may sail over their heads. I think it was also amusing for adults who can remember what it was like to be a child or maybe just those who like Chris O'Dowd's style of humor.
1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Not for losers By Amazon Customer Firstly, I thought I was getting a paperback but this is a lovely hardcover addition. The book is hilarious, just like the show and the illustrations are great. The book reminds me of the 'Diary Of A Wimpy Kid' books in it's layout and overall feel but with a delightful Irish twist. I'm sure kids would love it but as an official grown up I can recommend it to people may age as well.
